Axel Forrester adjusted his sunglasses and leaned back against a lounge chair, grateful for the first warm, summerlike day in June in the Hamptons. Xander Kingston’s dog, Bella, sat by his side.

An extra pair of glasses lay on the table beside him. He picked them up and propped them over the golden retriever’s eyes. “There you go, girl. That’s better, isn’t it?” He patted her on the head, and she stretched out on the ground, leaving the glasses in place.

He tipped his head up to the sky and closed his eyes, enjoying the heat on his face. As a California kid, his first winter in New York had been a huge adjustment. He’d moved here last summer when he’d become the drummer for the Original Kings and had spent the first couple of months bunking at the lead singer Dash Kingston’s house.

Axel learned fast that the band was a tight-knit bunch, all living in Dash’s home. Until a baby scare with a groupie put Dash in need of a fake girlfriend to fix his reputation, and Axel’s sister, Cassidy, had played the role.

Now Cassidy and Dash were married, having wed in front of family and friends this past winter. Axel had rented a house nearby, as had Jagger, the guitar player, and Mac, the bassist. But Axel and the guys spent more time at Dash’s home studio or here at Xander’s than at their own places.

Xander complained about the fact that the band had followed Dash’s lead, making his house their home away from home, but nobody believed Xander really considered them unwanted company. And Sasha, the famous actress Xander had married this past spring, welcomed them, as long as they knocked first.

Given the Kingston family’s dysfunctional background, courtesy of their now deceased father, the fact that four of the five siblings were settled and happy gave a guy like Axel hope that he’d meet the right woman. He was sick of the rock-star lifestyle, the parties after the shows, the groupies, and the drinking. At thirty years old, he wanted a partner for life.

And if he couldn’t find the right woman?

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

This is part of the Kingston Family series but can definitely read as an introduction to the goodness of these books!

I really enjoyed seeing Axel use his bandmate's dog to get to meet up with his first love, Tara. It is a really cute second-chance romance, and once again reminds us that the decisions we make at 18 don't have to define the rest of our lives. It was tough for Axel to hear what had happened to Tara when he left and how she had to cope without him. Tara inevitably has her guard up, but it is also clear that the chemistry and history between them is pretty powerful.

A really engaging and enjoyable read – and I am already looking forward to the new releases coming up.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
Growing up, both Axel and Tara had plans for their lives. Sure, they dated all through high school but all during their relationship each knew their relationship had an end date. Axel wanted to move to LA and pursue his music career while Tara wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and become a vet.

A random look at his very first – and private – social media page, has Axel taking a second look. There she is – Tara Stillman – and living just down the road from him. Her relationship status says single, but is she?

Tara's a bit guarded that Axel has looked her up but her mother can't help but push her towards Axel. She wants grandkids, after all.

This second-chance romance is a wonderful short read that is part of the 1001 Dark Nights series. You don't have to have read the first books of the Kingston Family series to enjoy this book and if you haven't, it will make you want to.

M/F Second-Chance Romance

Tara is living her life. She loves her job and loves that her mom has found happiness again. Tara thought that her life would be different, but when her dad died unexpectedly, things shifted. Now a successful vet, she loves her patients and life.

Axel always wanted to make it big. Now that he's in a successful band, he can't help but see his friends settling down and want a little of that for himself. When he sees his first love on social media, and notices that she's close, he can't help himself. He has to see her.

With a meddling mom, friends who want their friends to be happy, and a past that had the makings of a future, these two will have to figure out if their past can help shape their future. Roots are something that everyone wants and if these two are going to find them, they'll have to grab ahold and trust.

This is a quick read that will make your heart fall in love all over again.
