Undercover Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams

Braden Mack thinks reading romance novels makes him an expert in love, but he’ll soon discover that real life is better than fiction.

Liv Papandreas has a dream job as a sous chef at Nashville’s hottest restaurant. Too bad the celebrity chef owner is less than charming behind kitchen doors. After she catches him harassing a young hostess, she confronts him and gets fired. Liv vows revenge, but she’ll need assistance to take on the powerful chef.

Unfortunately, that means turning to Braden Mack. When Liv’s blackballed from the restaurant scene, the charismatic nightclub entrepreneur offers to help expose her ex-boss, but she is suspicious of his motives. He’ll need to call in reinforcements: the Bromance Book Club.

Inspired by the romantic suspense novel they’re reading, the book club assists Liv in setting up a sting operation to take down the chef. But they’re just as eager to help Mack figure out the way to Liv’s heart... even though she’s determined to squelch the sparks between them before she gets burned.

I was so pleased to be back with the Bromance Book Club. The scene at the start of the book where they go to a bricks and mortar store to purchase their romance novels was great. Our hero, Braden, is the founder of the book club but when he see him out of a date for the first time, it is clear that while he might have some things right, he is completely clueless about others when it comes to relationships. I found the cluelessness kind of cute because he is a good guy, and a hot one too.

Mack is a constant flirt and I love that our heroine, Liv, isn't affected by Mack's charm in the beginning. When Liv and Mack team up to expose Liv's former boss, who has been taking advantage of his female employees, their initial interactions are not of a romantic nature, but they are fun and there is lots of sarcastic banter, particularly from Liv. She is a strong woman who is ready to fight the good fight and take on the world.

As Liv and Mack spend more time together, an attraction forms and their relationship changes, which was entertaining and a bit sexy as well. As well as a great couple, Undercover Bromance gave me what I want from a rom-com – a sexy romance with lots of fun banter, a supporting cast of interesting, funny and lovable characters that I didn't want to leave when the book was over. Undercover Bromance is my first five star read of 2020.

4.5 stars of determination, ethics, and romance!

This is the second book in the series, and I absolutely loved it. I would recommend that you read them in order, as the basis for the book club, and the success of Gavin and Thea is well worth reading first. That said, if you are impatient, then you could read this first.

There are so many fun and fabulous parts to this story, that I hardly know on which element to concentrate in this review – the determination of Liv to expose her ex-boss for his perverted, controlling and bullying behaviour towards his female staff; the dedication of Braden (Mack) to following the rules he has set himself from his considerable expertise in romantic novels; all the crazy that is Rosie's farm; the camaraderie of the men in the book club; and of course, the fun of the developing relationship between Liv and Mack.

Understanding why Mack had set up the bromance book club and how he had relied on it to help him believe that he could be better than his father was a lovely part of the story as was the group's intervention to give him back the benefit of his own advice! Liv, too, had to move out of her safe place and accept that he really did care about her and she cared about him.

I am very much looking forward to the next installment.

Let's just say that while you could read this book without having read book one, it would be so much better if you read book one first.

Mack is an amazing character. He wants to believe in love so much that he began this romance book club. He and his friends try to learn all that they can from romance novels in order to win over women and woo them. I absolutely love his group of romance reading men. They are hilarious, chivalrous, and most of all, good men.

Liv has worked her butt off to get where she is. And despite where she is, she kind of hates it. When she witnesses her sleazy boss harassing another woman at work, Liv won't stand for it. Even though she knows that he is a powerful person in the culinary world, she doesn't understand why the women can't or won't stand up for themselves. She starts her own investigation.

When Mack hears about Liv's firing, at first, he thinks it's all his fault. After all, he did make her drop food into his date's lap. But what he doesn't realize is that her snarky, headstrong attitude is just what he wasn't looking for.

These two are like oil and water, until they aren't. I loved their banter and thought that they had great chemistry. Mack and his friends were funny and witty throughout and the Russian was my most favorite character of all in this book.

I can't wait to see what happens next because these couples are fantastic.

Lyssa Kay Adams read her first romance novel in eighth grade after swiping one from her grandmother’s book shelf and was hooked forever. After a nearly 20-year career as a journalist, her dreams of writing and publishing her own HEAs came true in 2015 with the release of her first novel, Seventh Inning Heat, followed by the RITA-nominated novella, Wild in Rio. Today, she writes full-time from her home in Michigan with a pesky, fluffy K9 assistant named Domino who spends most of his day snoring on her desk (that is, when he’s not burying things around the house).
