Leaning into Always by Lane Hayes Audiobook Review

Life is good for Eric Schuster. He owns a highly successful tech company, has a great group of buddies, and he’s about to marry the man of his dreams. Eric is pleasantly surprised to find the transition from friends to lovers has been easier than he thought. However, after running into an overly friendly ex-boyfriend on an impromptu trip to their shared hometown, Eric realizes things are about to get complicated.

Zane Richards is a quintessential California surfer dude turned professional sailor. His laid-back approach has helped him navigate difficult times in his life. Eric may not share his easy-going mindset but Zane knows without a doubt Eric is the one. However, carving a future together may require confronting a piece of the past Zane thought he’d left far behind. Both men will have to decide if they’re willing to risk what they know for a chance to lean into always.

Length: 3 hrs and 16 mins

As a fellow high school nerd, I felt for Eric so many times throughout the story. Even though I didn't suffer any of the bullying that he did (at least, nowhere close to the level he did), it was far too easy for me to "take his side" and want to pull Zane aside to ask him what the heck was wrong with him. I had to remind myself more than once that Zane's a good guy who tends to see the best in people, so it wasn't fair to expect him to understand how Dean (jeez, I've already forgotten the tool's name so that might be wrong) made Eric's high school insecurities return. And then, in the moment that Eric finally realizes the error of his ways and how his insecurities are unfounded, for Zane to insist on Eric staying the course... well, I just wanted to smack him on the back of the head. Like Eric, I didn't know how the day would play out, but I wholeheartedly agreed with his assessment that it wasn't going to be a good day. Poor, poor Eric. But as bad as it was for him, I also felt so bad for Zane when he learned that his trust had been misplaced and in doing so, he'd put Eric in a bad situation. There's a lot of angst in this installment but it is oh so good and I'm glad I got to listen to it. [On a side note, I've already listened to Leaning into the Fall and am still surprised to see how much of himself that Nick kept from his friends. It still boggles my mind.]

As I just re-listened to Leaning into Love first, I was pleased to listen to Seth Clayton's narration again for Eric and Zane. He does such a great job in creating different voices for the two men and in the consistency from the first book to this one. And he is spot-on with conveying all of Eric's angst and insecurities, as well as Zane's loving frustration and his own insecurities. Listening to the two books back to back was an absolute treat and a wonderful way to spend a semi-lazy Sunday. Being as Eric and Zane's story is one I will definitely be listening to again, Leaning into Always is a 5-star listen for me.

Now I'm off to listen to Nick's story again before I cue up the latest audiobook release in the series, Leaning into Touch. As much as Leaning into the Fall surprised me and as much as I've enjoyed the series so far, I'm excited to see with Lane and Russo have in store for Josh.

Lane Hayes is grateful to finally be doing what she loves best. Writing full-time! It’s no secret Lane loves a good romance novel. An avid reader from an early age, she has always been drawn to well-told love story with beautifully written characters. These days she prefers the leading roles to both be men. Lane discovered the M/M genre a few years ago and was instantly hooked. Her debut novel was a 2013 Rainbow Award finalist and subsequent books have received Honorable Mentions, and were winners in the 2016 Rainbow Awards. She loves red wine, chocolate and travel (in no particular order). Lane lives in Southern California with her amazing husband in an almost empty nest.
