Back in Play by Lynda Aicher

For Minnesota Glaciers captain Scott Walters, skating on a bum knee—and self-medicating to keep skating on it—is all part of the game. That the painkillers he's eating prevent him from having meaningful relationships is just one more sacrifice in a lifetime of them. He’s worked too hard to let his image be ruined by injury or dependency, so he hides the pain and fakes the rest—a girlfriend would only complicate matters.

High school teacher Rachel Fielding never needed a man in her life, but she also never intended to grow old alone. When she meets Scott while visiting her brother, she’s intrigued to find herself wanting him in her bed. For hours at a time, as often as possible. Scott is a giver, and just the memory of his attentions is enough to drive her crazy. Anything long-term is out of the question, though—the pills she finds in Scott's house indicate he's struggling with a lot more than growing older in a young man's game.

When what starts out as a what-the-hell weeklong fling turns into Scott and Rachel exploring each other outside the bedroom, Rachel hesitates. But Scott asks for her support to break his addiction, and hearing him admit his secrets has her ignoring her own rules—until he breaks her heart. With the Glaciers refusing to renew his contract and his future with Rachel uncertain, Scott has some big decisions to make and a lot to prove—especially to himself.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
Scott Walters is in denial. His knee is shot and he's in constant pain. Wanting to play just one more year and one more shot at the Cup, he's willing to sacrifice just about anything to accomplish it. Then he meets Rachel Fielding and there's something about her that catches his interest.

Rachel is interested in Scott as well and is willing to spend what's left of her vacation with him. Rachel can't believe how well they get along and she if she had one wish, it would be that she had more time to spend with Scott.

Then she learns Scott's secret, she is faced with a decision. Help him or walk away.

Scott is finally ready to face his demons and accept the consequences of his actions. With Rachel's help, he is able to find a place to heal and walks out a better person.

Only time will tell if he has truly changed and how strong his will to survive and thrive both on and off the ice.

This is the second in the series – and I loved book one so was not surprised to find this was also a great read. Ms. Aicher has a wonderful way of dealing with a big issue in a very personal and meaningful way. Last time it was about the lack of opportunities for women in top sports, now we deal with the issue of dependency on painkillers. I was completely engrossed in the storyline, let alone rooting for the couple and their potential together. It amused me that Rachel didn't really even have a passing knowledge of the sport, yet her humanity and empathy made her the perfect person to support Scott in his time of need. That she taught calculus was just a bonus to a fellow nerd/geek like me.

Once you start one of these books there is not a good point to take a break, so make sure you have a clear evening or two! I nearly missed my train stop on the way home, I was so distracted!
