The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis

The New York Times bestselling author of Rainy Day Friends and Lost and Found Sisters returns to Wildstone, California...

Brooke Lemon has always led the life she wanted, wild adventures—and mistakes—included, something her perfect sister, Mindy, never understood. So when Mindy shows up on Brooke’s doorstep in the throes of a break-down with her three little kids in tow, Brooke’s shocked.

Wanting to make amends, Brooke agrees to trade places, taking the kids back to Wildstone for a few days so Mindy can pick up the pieces and put herself back together. What Brooke doesn’t admit is she’s just as broken... Also how does one go home after seven years away? It doesn’t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrett’s no longer interested. Only his words don’t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she’d shoved deep.

Soon the sisters begin to wonder: Are they lemons in life? In love? All they know is that neither seems to be able to run far enough to outpace her demons. And when secrets surface, they’ll have to learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.

This is the fourth in the series – as there is a 1.5! They are all delicious and as with any of Jill Shalvis' wonderful books, be prepared to put life on hold whilst you devour it! I have just spent the day hidden away claiming to be "Spring-cleaning" but really reading this latest installment cover to cover. What a treat! And I would say that whilst the stories are linked, you can definitely read them out of order.

There are so many depths for us to discover in this wonderful story of two women bound by birth, but both lost in their lives. Older sister Mindy descends on seven-year absent Brooke in LA. Exhausted and believing her marriage may be over, Mindy checks out on adulthood for a while, letting Brooke take over childcare for a few days. So, very quickly we are immersed in the crazy that comes with these three young children and their needs – which actually gives Brooke a chance to continue hiding all of hers.

As the story unfolds, Brooke and her younger self have to come to terms with some difficult truths that she has been suppressing. Given that her sister's home is next door to Garrett, a major part of her past, it is difficult to ignore that truth. Throw in trying to parent for the first time, full-time and on her own, and you can just imagine the chaos – but a chaos fundamentally full of love. For all the main characters in this story have good hearts; they just need to move forward, ideally in unison.

Once Linc, Mindy's husband returns – to a dose of truth from Brooke – it would seem that at least that relationship is on the mend... but everyone (especially men) should remember the danger of grand gestures! It is brilliant to watch the 'stable' together couple make as many mistakes as the once heartbroken, walled-in pair as they try and work out how life should move forward.

In classic Shalvis style, this story manages to bring tears to the eyes, and then seconds later have one laughing out loud. It is a beautiful story with the most perfect ending (which I must admit, I could absolutely imagine!). Now to wait patiently until another treasure gets written!

Once again, Shalvis delivers. The characters in this book are flawed, just like you and I. As we get to know Brooke and Garrett, we can see beyond the facade that they show the world to what is going on behind the mask.

We all wear masks, whether to convince others, or ourselves, that life is perfect. It's learning who to trust at the end of the day that makes us give in to the feelings of love and excitement with hope that the flaws that we see in ourselves are just mere laugh lines to the ones who love us most.
