Corbin’s Bend – An Author’s Angst by Maggie Ryan

Venia’s world has revolved around words as long as she can remember. She used words of love with her first husband and used words of comfort to ease their daughter’s pain at his untimely death. As a mentor in the spanking community of Corbin’s Bend, she’s called upon her extensive experience with words to both soothe, comfort, scold, and coax those newly arrived residents. Hosting the local book club for the taken-in-hands of the community gives her an opportunity to add more words to her vocabulary. She absolutely adores words until the day they disappear. Facing a severe case of writer’s block, she is feeling lost until she makes a decision. If the words won’t come to her, she’ll go to them.

Deciding to strike out in a new direction, her next book will focus on the horrifying aspect of some scientific experiment going terribly wrong. All she needs is a bit of help and finds it in Dina, after all, who better than a chemist to give her some very scary facts. Dina, like everyone who has ever met Venia, adores the older woman. Seeing a chance to do a bit of match making on her own, she insists she knows the perfect person for Venia to interview. Jeffrey Humphries is not only her boss and the lab manager where they both work, he is also single and living in Corbin’s Bend.

The two meet, and it doesn’t take long for Venia to discover that the man is no pushover. He has definite ideas about what makes a book worth reading and has no hesitation in making his point even if it means turning the tables on Venia. Venia is a bit shocked to discover the man has a way with words himself and has to decide if the price of breaking through her writer’s block is worth the angst of loving another man who is ready, willing, and, oh so very able to turn her over his knees. Will she accept the new words he wishes to write upon her heart – and her backside?

Venia is an author who is having writer’s block. It doesn’t help that she needs a spanking and her normal go to for a spanking is now with someone. Deciding she needs to go in a new direction she seeks help from her friend and fellow book club member Dina. Dina in turn thinks that this is the perfect time to set her up with her boss Jeffrey. Jeffrey shows Venia all about the lab and tries to help her with ideas for a book. Jeffrey also notices Venia in another way and she makes him feel things he hasn’t felt in years. With flirting and role playing Venia actually gets her spanking that she has needed and Jeffrey thinks he may have found someone who can meet his needs. These two strike up a deal, Venia has to write 4,000 words a day or she gets a spanking. This leads to a relationship between Venia and Jeffrey. To me, there was just a lot of inner monologue that I could have done without. I wanted more dialogue between Jeffrey and Venia and wanted to see the relationship build and blossom. For me this book was just ok, they started out good, but then all of the sudden they were in love and bam the book was over. I just didn’t feel the passion and chemistry and it just left me feeling blah.

In this installment of season three of Corbin's Bend, we finally get the back story of Venia Varner. Venia's always been the "good" friend to everyone, doing for others and making sure that her mentees are in good shape. She's, at face value, happy. Pulling back the curtain on her life, you see her as on the outside looking in. Yes, she lives in a spanking community, but her husband passed away before they got to live their dream of living the lifestyle freely and proudly.

Dr. Jeff is a relative loner, not exactly new to the community, but has his circle of friends and doesn't have the confidence to see if the right woman is out there for him. Once bitten, twice shy is his unspoken motto and he seems to have taken it to heart.

With a little help from well meaning (and matchmaking) friends, Jeff is introduced to Venia and from the moment they meet you can feel the "click" between them.

It’s a very solid story of how two people find their second chance at happiness.

What worked/what didn't: I thought the "I love yous" were a little rushed but I really enjoyed the fact the author didn't just throw them into bed right off the bat.

Part of a Series: Yes, Corbin's Bend Season 3

One of the things that I love about the Corbin’s Bend books is that the changes in authors and changes in emphasis give us different perspectives, and issues. Sometimes it is about the reality of joining such a community, other times about the trials of life in general and the way that members of the community will deal with them, and sometimes about established members who we have only seen on the periphery.

Venia has been a mentor in a number of previous stories, so it was good to get her story and to see behind her front door. I enjoy the banter of the TiH cast, and how they all recognise the need that they have to be disciplined, and the release it gives them. I liked listening to Venia's inner voice, although sometimes I felt that she should be putting it on paper and her writer's block would be solved! I do enjoy hearing other people's thoughts, and comparing them to mine – it isn't something you can do except with a book. I also loved the words a day requirement – I probably could do with some similar type of motivation at times!

All in all, another good read, thank you Ms. Ryan.

I have always loved the power of words and getting lost in another world. Bringing characters to life in a book so that you feel you know them is something I love doing. When not writing, I love reading curled up in a chair with huge mug of coffee.

I write mainly historical, age-play, fantasy & Victorian spanking romances.
