Fire Balls by Tara Lain

Renowned artist Rodney Mansfield stands five foot six, has pink hair, six earrings, a black belt in karate—and a desperate yearning for firefighter Hunter Fallon. But Rod, the Runtback of Notre Dame, knows he’ll never land the beautiful “straight gay” guy, so Rod musters his altruism and helps his more masculine friend Jerry attract Hunter. As if a broken heart wasn’t enough, Rod saves Hunter from a firehouse homophobe—humiliating Hunter in front of his dad!

Hunter lives a dream life—his father’s dream. While he’d like to teach literature in college, read poetry in the sun, and find a strong guy to top him, he fights fires for his dad. Hunter hates flamboyant guys like Rodney. So why can’t he resist him? Maybe it’s time to admit this is one flame he has no desire to put out.

I loved Rod in the first book and I couldn’t wait to read his story. Rod just made my heart melt, break, and soar in this book. Rod doesn’t think a guy like Hunter would ever want him so he helps Jerry date Hunter. This just breaks my heart and made me so mad at the same time. I wanted to reach through the book at shake Rod. Hunter just needed a swift kick in the butt until he got his head out of his butt. I am glad we got to see characters from the previous book. The part of the book that hit me the hardest was when Rod’s studio catches fire and he rushes in to save a painting he made of Hunter and Hunter finds him passed out clutching the canvas. I was just in tears!!! I really enjoyed this book and the series and I can’t wait to see who is up next.

Silly, fun, and sexy, I loved this story. When Rodney, a flamboyant and effeminate artist, paints the firefighter he’s had a longstanding crush on, it is the beginning of an unlikely romance.

It was impossible for me not to fall in love with Rodney. I loved his unapologetic diva ways and his surprising martial arts skills. It took me a bit longer to warm to Hunter’s quieter ways, but these two are quite special together. As with all the books in this series, the supporting characters are just as pretty and just as much fun as our two men and I absolutely love Tara Lain’s Laguna Beach.

The plot is a bit thin, but I enjoyed the awkward double date and the way that fate seemed to push these two together. This is an easy read that doesn’t require too much thinking. Set in a California beach town, the pages are soaked in sunshine.

This is a fun, frothy, and happy story that will make readers smile. It is also a sexy read – artists always seem to make for good sex scenes and there are a few fabulously steamy scenes in this book. This is definitely a holiday beach read that should be read with a pretty cocktail in hand.

  1. Thank you, thank you Angie and Sarah for reading Fire Balls! I'm so happy you liked my Rodney. He is a special guy and you'll see a bunch more of him in future books -- including the new ones in the series coming later in the year! : )
