This is the second story in this series, but as any Melissa Foster fan will know, all her books interlink and mean that we the reader can sit for a few minutes, like guests at a family wedding working out all the connections and overlaps which make everyone fit together. I absolutely love it; every single time I read one of Foster's books, I am drawn back into that world!

Redemption Ranch is a haven for those who need support. The Whiskey family and their team work tirelessly to provide a safe space, counselling, and equine therapy, as well as good old fashioned farm work to give people time to heal and recover from the demons that chase them.

In the case of Sully, she escaped from a cult, was blessed to find a trucker with a heart and connections to the Dark Knights. So after living her whole life in a compound, with no TV, telephone, trips, or trimmings, she now has a minder in Cowboy (Callahan) Whiskey. He treats her with such care and caution that she has the time to unfurl and understand more of the world around her – and the very strong attraction she has to this man.

I am loathed to say more about the story itself, as there are some fascinating reveals, and connections found, just rest assured that they are both heartwarming and epically tragic. Through it all, Callahan is a safe place for Sully and though their romance causes concern at the ranch, they are also given the support and love from his family to work out how the future might be.

As always, a hugely satisfying story, with a meaningful ending; thank you, Melissa Foster!

I have waited for Callahan "Cowboy" Whiskey's story and I knew that this author would have the perfect woman for him when she was ready to appear – and boy, did she appear.

Sullivan "Sully" Tate has a past that is hard to believe, but her future is even more unbelievable. But when she meets Cowboy, her life takes a whole new turn. Cowboy is her main protector, along with more of the men from Redemption Ranch; and along with the counselors, she can overcome her past and look forward to a new future.

As Cowboy helps Sully see that she can do whatever she feels, the sparks between them are flying like rockets. Their feelings are something new for them both and they want to explore them, but Cowboy doesn't want to push her, so he lets her lead.

When someone from her past appears, can they overcome it and have a future together? You need to read this one and find out how this one ends. I highly recommend you meet Cowboy and Sully; you will not be disappointed. And if you haven't read this author before, you should, you will not be disappointed in any of her stories.

He’d become her safe place, her anchor, her calm in the face of a storm, and as her heartbeat settled, she wished she could stay right there in his arms forever.

There was something merciful in his eyes, something that drew her in and held her there, making her want to trust him, and that was terrifying.

Adverse Conditions by Elle Keaton Blog Tour

Blog Tour. Adverse Conditions. Reclaimed Hearts Series. Elle Keaton.

The town is worth saving, as long as conspiracy theorists, serial killers, and Vincent Barone all stay out of Xavier’s way.

Xavier swore he’d never move back to the flyspeck of a town he’d grown up in and he kept that promise for over twenty years. Now he's back for good.

Vincent never left. After earning his teaching certificate, he stayed in town to be close to his elderly parents. These days he’s the single dad of a fifteen-year-old daughter and working two jobs to make ends meet. He's perfectly happy with his life.

Xavier's mission is to save Cooper Springs. But his efforts are being hindered by his stodgy, straight-laced, rule-following neighbor, Vincent Barone. Dark-eyed, broad-shouldered, and muscly Vincent, who Xav stealthily ogles when he toils in his yard sans shirt. For a high school shop teacher, Vincent is too sexy. And he has a kid. And he infuriates Xavier. And anyway, love is for suckers.

Vincent doesn't have time to date. And he certainly wouldn’t date his flashy, arrogant, neighbor who he absolutely did not have a crush on in high school. Who did Xavier think he was, moving back to town and throwing his weight around, causing butterflies in Vincent's stomach, and making his stupid heart beat faster every time he saw him?

Cooper Springs has changed since they were kids, and maybe two guys can move from hate to love. But are they ready? Will Vincent bend a few of his rules? Will Xavier reign in his chaotic tendencies? Is love in the air?

Then there’s the matter of the grisly discovery in the woods, murder is bad for business.

Welcome to Cooper Springs, home to UFO chasers, Sasquatch believers, conspiracy theorists, chainsaw artists, and regular folk just trying to make a living. And, quite possibly, a killer.

Adverse Conditions is the first in the Reclaimed Hearts series, set in the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, it is an opposites-attract, older lovers, silver fox, enemies-to-lovers, small-town romance, with a little murder. HEA guaranteed.

Excerpt

Xavier glanced out the window again. Across the street, Liam Wright’s most recent chainsaw sculpture was proudly displayed in his front yard. He couldn’t quite tell what it was supposed to be, he’d have to ask Liam when he saw him.

“Yeah—” Movement in the yard next to Liam’s caught Xav’s attention. He leaned closer to the windowpane for a better view of his hunky, muscly neighbor as he stomped out into the street. The man carried a long-handled yard tool slung over his shoulder like some character out of a Monty Python movie and was dragging a clean green bin behind him.

Halting at the corner, he hefted the cast iron grating off in one swift movement and began aggressively raking the leaves and other debris out of and away from the drain. Even though he was bundled up in a yellow rain slicker, Xavier would have recognized the Samaritan anywhere. “And also, you don’t have to deal with Vincent Barone.”

Vincent Barone. His nemesis.

All Xavier wanted to do was sell property and help Cooper Springs grow. But Vincent Barone had decided to get himself certified as a real estate appraiser and stymie Xavier at every fucking turn. Every damn i and every damn t that possibly needed dotting or crossing—and many that didn’t—were mentioned in every single one of Barone’s reports. Didn’t Barone understand that there needed to be room for negotiation? Maybe Mrs. Nelson’s estate didn’t want to fix the roof and would instead reduce the sale price for a potential buyer.

“It’s his literal job, Xavier,” Daisy reminded him with a laugh. Probably hoping to stop the rant she’d spotted from over a hundred miles away. “He is supposed to find things the seller should fix. No one wants the surprise of the AC failing the day after move-in.”

“He won’t listen to reason, Daisy,” Xavier grumbled. “He is literally the most aggravating person in all of Cooper Springs. There’s a guy coming all the way from Seattle today to look at the cabins and I know Vinny-boy is going to screw it up—if it gets as far as an offer.”

Barone was extremely thorough. Which was great when building bridges or, in Vincent’s case, teaching shop at the high school and needing to make sure the bored teenagers didn’t cut their extremities off. But Vincent’s part-time second job was home appraisal, and Xavier was tired of being surprised by what Barone wrote up in his official reports. At least give a guy a heads-up that the sump pump had backed up into the garage and caused water damage. Even if Barone had noted that the damage “appeared to be years old,” banks hated comments like that. Banks wanted to hear about new roofs and perfect sewer lines, not repairs that could reduce the value of their investment. And Xavier liked to be prepared with the bad news before he talked to his clients, not in the middle of meeting with them.

How fucking hard was that?

“Have you actually tried talking to him? Or do you just stand at your window and shoot dagger glares through the plate glass?”

Xavier moved away from the window so he wouldn’t be lying when he said, “No.”

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Adverse Conditions is the first book in Elle Keaton’s newest series, Reclaimed Hearts. Xavier, a real estate agent, has returned to his hometown of Cooper Springs and is living across the street from single dad and high school teacher Vincent, and the men do not get along. This is an enemies-to-lovers story I was intrigued with because I couldn’t see how they were going to end up lovers. Not only because they didn’t get along, but because Xavier was not interested in any serious relationship. I loved the unpredictability, and I liked that time was taken to build the heat and romance.

Adverse Conditions doesn’t just focus on the romance between Vincent and Xavier. We get to meet various interesting members of the Cooper Springs community – from the bar owner, a local artist, and a sheriff that I’m looking forward to learning more about. To add some mystery, remains are found that may or may not be those of a missing teenager.

I really enjoyed Vincent and Xavier’s romance and I’m sure we will see more of the men in future books. I think Adverse Conditions is a really good introduction to Cooper Spring and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ruthie☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series – and whilst I enjoyed the main story, and some of the world building, the murder element didn't really seem to fit. I am looking forward to finding out more in future installments.

Xavier is back in his small hometown after a nasty breakup. He is a successful real estate agent and plans on restoring some glory to his childhood home – and his neighbour and one time school mate, Vincent, looks to be a blocker in his quest. Vincent stayed home, teaches at the local school, brings up his daughter, and does house appraisals in his spare time – and does them far too well, would be the contention of many in the area.

This is not exactly the expected start of a great romance, but the author does a good job of giving us some humour, thanks in the main to Xavier's mother, and some reality checks, mainly from Vincent's teenage daughter. Their approval of this chance at love for them both helps them act on the unsettling feelings they have for each other.

Intriguing start to a series, will be good to find out what happens next.

“Have you actually tried talking to him? Or do you just stand at your window and shoot dagger glares through the plate glass?” Xavier moved away from the window so he wouldn’t be lying when he said, “No.” “No, what? You haven’t talked to him? Or you’ve quit lurking and eyeing him through the curtains.?”

Without stopping to think deeply about what he was doing, or thinking at all – because he one hundred percent did not like Xavier Stone, even if he was sexy as heck – Vincent shrugged back into his jacket and rain boots, pulled his hood over his head, and stepped outside. He couldn’t help it if he was a neighborly sort.

This is the ninth installment in the series, and you have missed out if you have not read them all – such a great premise for a collection of stories, and this is another winner for me.

Harrison has long decided that he will not commit to anyone, as he fears that his father's genes run deep in him and he might do wrong by her. Recently however, one woman has been on his mind, and making him question if he can stay away.

Winter is an independent woman, brought up by a strong single mum, she is now alone in the world, and not about to relinquish her freedom – so Harrison was the perfect fling, as no worries about commitment there. Then everything is turned upside down by an accidental pregnancy. Thankfully she knows to tell him, and then we get to enjoy watching how it all plays out.

Understanding their backgrounds, and enjoying the family and friends who support them, makes this a lovely read. Watching them fall in love and acknowledge they have a future is delicious, and there is no shortage of passion and romance in their journey.

Very entertaining and lovely to catch up with old friends!

M/F Romance

So, this is a story in a long series, but you don't necessarily need to read the books in order. However, with that being said, you would be missing out if you didn't read the previous books.

Winter is a reporter. She knows that her very existence is one that is going to throw her new friends' lives into disarray. Her biological family is one that is used to scandal, but Winter hates that she's the cause of this one.

Harrison is not looking for anyone. He's happy in his life. He loves his siblings, nephews and nieces, and likes his life the way it's going. Winter is a wonderful woman, but after his interview with her, he doesn't think much of his answers.

When Winter and Harrison find out they are expecting, Winter knows that she can do it herself. After all, Harrison was very clear in his interview with her. However, when Harrison learns of Winter's predicament, he isn't so sure of his path forward.

These two have a cute relationship that is caught up in family drama, outside threats, and swirling questions about love and commitment. Can these two truly be happy together or will co-parenting be in their future?

You will not be disappointed in the story, but I did find it somewhat predictable. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next for this family.

His family had figured out what Harrison had been holding inside. He loved this woman.

Excerpt

I give the kitchen one last wipe down, then make myself a mug of chamomile tea and bring it upstairs with me. I stop on the second-floor landing. The door to the guest room is open and the light is still on. When I peek inside, I find Connor lying on his side in the middle of the bed, on top of the covers.

He looks so small like that, so defenseless and vulnerable. This big guy, all curled up, his thick thighs tucked against his chest. His dark blond hair is all tousled and his lip is pushed out in that pout.

I set my hand on his shoulder and give him a shake. “Connor.”

His eyes flutter open and reveal light brown irises that remind me of caramel. Warm and sweet and comforting. He stares at me, but I’m not sure if he sees me at all.

“Come on, let’s get you under the covers.” I set my mug aside and tug Connor to his feet. He moves slowly, loose and languid. He’s probably on the edge of unconsciousness. I get him onto the bed, head on a pillow, and drag the covers over him, making sure they’re wrapped snuggly around him. When I turn to go, his arm shoots out from under the bedding and latches onto my wrist.

“Don’t leave.” His words are slurred with fatigue, but the neediness in them is as clear as a bell. It echoes through me and I can’t tell whether I’m reflecting what he’s projecting or whether I need that comfort too. Either way, I can’t leave him.

I climb onto the bed next to him, the thickness of the covers separating us. Connor immediately molds himself to me, head on my shoulder, arm flung across my body. He rubs his cheek back and forth, breathing in deep like he’s filling himself up on my smell. When he sighs, all the tension melts away and he’s heavy and soft on top of me.

His weight… I close my eyes as my body pushes through the murkiness of a four-year slumber. His hair tickles my chin, his chest rises and falls against my side, his arm is heavy on my stomach, his hand is curled possessively around my hip. I haven’t slept next to anyone since Roger. Hell, I haven’t held anyone as closely as I’ve held Connor since then either.

My brain dumps barrels and barrels of oxytocin into my system, the entire stockpile over the last four years. It feels so goddamn good to have Connor on me, touching me, curled up around me. My skin is all sensitive and tingly. My muscles are liquid like I’ve had a deep tissue massage. And my dick… Christ, my dick roars to life.

I’m hard, achingly hard. From something as simple as having a guy cuddle me in bed. We’re both fully clothed. There’s a thick blanket between us. But all my dick cares about is that I have a man on top of me and it feels fucking good.

Connor is already asleep. He was out the second I laid down with him. The ten extra minutes I stay there are for me. Only me. I let myself enjoy his weight, the softness of his hair, the scent of Mars’s locker room soap that still clings to his skin. I let myself soak it all in, as much of it as I can get, until I’m almost falling asleep myself.

There’s a flair about him, something enigmatic that keeps drawing me in.

Angie☆☆☆☆
This was a fast weekend read for me. Connor gets home from spin class and finds his boyfriend is cheating on him with his BFF. He's devastated and runs, ends up at the gym in hysterics. In comes Donnie, the spin instructor, to the rescue. Things move super fast. Are there really nice people like Donnie in the real world? I mean Connor and Donnie were basically strangers but then Donnie offers him a room? Whatever, it's a story. I loved Donnie instantly. I felt his pain with the loss of his husband. This was a really sweet romance, low angst, age gap, with hurt/comfort too. It wasn't an insta-love story, but it was sweet and loving, and I liked how both characters grew. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Shannan☆☆☆☆
Ripped is the first book in the Mars Fitness series.

When Connor walks in and finds his best friend and his boyfriend, not so much in bed but looking like they were in it not long before, he's crushed. When he can't turn to the two people he would normally go to when he needs someone he doesn't know where to go. He finds himself back at the gym he left right before this nightmare happened. He can't seem to control his emotions and collapses sobbing, thankfully Donnie, the cycling instructor, is there to hold him together.

Donnie's husband died four years ago. He knows he needs to move on with his life, but he's stuck in his grief. Seeing Connor so distraught has him reacting in ways he never saw coming. The urge to protect him and hold him together is something that he can't deny and offers his spare room to the basic stranger. But he sees something in Connor that might help them both heal.

Connor and Donnie have an almost insta-love story, but I didn't mind that aspect at all. Their chemistry was easy to see, and it was fun to watch it play out. I was instantly invested in these characters and loved seeing them get their happily ever after.

Linden Bell is a new-to-me author, and I really enjoyed this first time read. I am looking forward to what comes next.

It feels like I’m slotting into place with him. Like he’s carved out a piece of himself, shaped especially for me.

Excerpt

The streets were still dark as Charlie left the house in Islington. The first pale strains of pre-dawn would soon illuminate the grimy streets with an eerie glow, but for the moment there was a peaceful stillness, almost as if the world were holding its breath.

Waiting…

His arse ached pleasantly with every step, and his well-used cock was sore against the rough material of his trousers. The hour was late by the time the Colonel had finished with him. Not that Charlie was complaining, he always enjoyed his time with the vigorous older man. The colonel was a rough but generous lover.

In fact, he’d enjoyed himself so thoroughly he’d missed the last tram back and there was no chance of him reaching his lodgings before they locked the doors. With no alternative available, he’d spent a few hours kipping on a chaise in the parlour, knowing that his lordship wouldn’t mind. It was why Lord Francis had purchased the house in Islington, so boys like him would have a safe place to indulge without risking trawling through Hyde Park. They weren’t prostitutes by any means, most of the young men such as himself were gainfully employed elsewhere.

His Lordship gave them a place to indulge their needs and no money ever changed hands, unlike some of the other Molly houses in London. The house in Islington was one of the safer places he knew of, with entry by invitation only. It minimised the risk, but they still had to be careful. The magistrates may have stopped hanging his kind but it didn’t mean he wouldn’t serve hard time if he was caught by the peelers.

He pulled his collar tight. The damp chill of the early hours seemed to sink right into his bones, causing him to shudder. Hurrying down the narrow misty street, he felt another shiver skitter down his spine on sly, spindly fingers– only this time, it wasn’t from the cold.

He stopped and turned back to look, certain someone was following him. His eyes narrowed but all he could see was the foggy, dim street behind him. With a small frown, he turned and hurried on; he didn’t have the time to dawdle as he had a fair distance to cover before dawn. The trams wouldn’t be running this early and his employer would not take kindly to his late arrival.

Focusing on the uneven cobbles beneath his feet, he turned down a darkened alley. There was more than a bite to the air, which probably meant snow before long. His fingers were already stiffening as he clutched the collar of his coat to ward off the cold.

He reached the end of the alley and turned, drawing up short when he found an abandoned hand-drawn cart. Frowning, Charlie glanced around, unable to see anyone as another bank of low-lying fog rolled across the road. Approaching the cart cautiously, he peered into the back and, to his confusion, saw a fair-sized crate, open and lined with hay, the lid propped against its side. Beside it was a small hammer and a pile of iron nails.

Deciding it was none of his business, he turned sharply and found himself colliding with a heavy chest. Charlie stumbled back a pace, his gaze skimming the man he’d collided with. He was a giant, standing almost two heads taller than Charlie, with shoulders so wide, Charlie doubted he’d be able to fit through a doorway without turning sideways. His hands were huge, his fingers thick and his knuckles dusted with wiry black hair.

Charlie’s gaze was drawn slowly upwards, past the man’s worn woollen coat to his thick neck, a jaw covered with a coarse, dark stubble, and lips set in a thin line. The rest of his face was cast into shadow by the brim of his shabby bowler hat.

“Pardon me, sir,” Charlie muttered as he attempted to step around the huge fellow.

The stranger simply stepped with him and continued to block his path. A small flutter of panic beat against Charlie’s ribs as he sucked in a breath and attempted to step to the opposite side, but once again the silent and unnerving giant moved into his path.

“Sir.” Charlie squared his narrow shoulders, holding his spine ramrod straight so as not to betray his unease. “Please stand aside.”

The man did not move, nor did he speak. Charlie felt cold fear trickle down his spine, as if he’d been doused by icy shards of winter rain.

“Shall I call out for the constable? I passed one not one street back and he was heading in this direction,” he lied, trying to present a confidence and authority he did not have.

For a second, they stood together, locked in silence. Then, just when Charlie was contemplating making a run for it, the giant stepped aside. Swallowing, he gave the man a curt nod and moved past. He barely got two steps away when he felt one of those huge arms wrap around him, pinning his arms to his sides. He struggled and cried out as a cloth was pressed over his mouth, muffling his frantic yell for help. A cloying scent filled his nose and mouth. The world around him began to spin and the cobbles tilted beneath his feet. His eyes rolled back in his head and his body went limp as everything turned black.

He didn’t feel a thing as he was picked up like a rag doll, nor did he stir when his slight frame was tucked into the crate. He didn’t register the lid lowering nor the ominous knocking as the nails sealed it shut.

In fact, there was no one, as the first pale rays of dawn began to break through the fog, to notice the enormous brute of a man slinging the leather strap over his wide shoulders and picking up the handles to drag the small cart behind him down the empty street in silence.

Welcome to the Underside, the fascinating place between Victorian pseudo science and the supernatural.

Molly Boys is the first installment in the London Underside series by Vawn Cassidy, a new-to-me author.

Set in the Victorian era London. The dark and gloomy setting lent well to the mystery unfolding on the pages. A serial killer is ravaging the area, reminiscent of Jack the Ripper but the victim profile were molly boys instead.

Lord Everett Stanley collides paths with Inspector Archibald Franklin. Opposites attract. Lost and aimless, Ev is highborn, while Archie is of a lower class, working hard to provide himself with a better life.

Archie is investigating a series of murders and assumes Ev knows more than he's letting on. The more time they spend together, the more Archie wants to know about Ev.

Molly Boys isn't a romance per se, definitely focused on the mystery to be solved, but it does have a secondary plot of romance. While they balance one another, I did feel as if their romance was far too fast, insta-love from pretty much the time they met. I need more intensity, more buildup, in order to believe they grew together. The plot itself and all the points of view, it took away from witnessing their growing connection. I didn't feel as if Ev grew much throughout the novel, still aimless and wandering, while Archie stayed the same as well – focused and logical.

While the mystery was written well, I am not a fan of numerous points-of-view. In fact, one of my biggest pet peeves is when I get a bird’s eye view into the villain's head, including their motivations. I enjoy the story unfolding from the main character's perspective as he uncovers the mystery. I don't wish to know things he doesn't, rather learning with him. I find too many points of view to be a distraction, detracting from the plot. Chaotic. I feel split between too many narrators to truly develop an emotional connection to any of them.

What I found out of nowhere was the paranormal element, which left me more baffled than intrigued. It didn't fit, especially without any foreshadowing throughout the novel, just tucked in there at the ending. The paranormal elements needed to be rooted much earlier, seeded at the beginning of the novel. It was as if the author couldn't decide which genre the series should be.

I enjoyed the setting and era, the dark and gritty mystery. I didn't connect to either Ev or Archie, nor was I a fan of the pacing and reveal of information, particularly with so many points of view. The paranormal element was baffling.

Unsure if I will continue with the series, I am willing to try more by this author to decide if we're a good fit – writing style versus reading style.

A forbidden love. A secret affair. A city plagued by murder.
