Mary – ☆☆☆☆☆
It seems with each Corinne Michaels book I read, she steals a part of my heart. Her books are so full of the feels it takes to make a story grab you and keep you so engrossed in the story that you don't want it to end.

This is the second book in the Willow Creek Valley series, and I think it is my favorite; I know it stole my heart after it broke it in two. This is Jack and Stella’s story, so hold on tight because this story is an emotional rollercoaster ride. You will be laughing one minute and crying the next. But believe me, it is well worth all the tears you cry.

If you haven't read this author before, you should. I found her in December 2020 and don't know what took me so long – I have a lot of catching up to do. I hope you love this one as much as I did.

This is set within a world familiar to any Linde's Wright series – but even if you are new to it, you will definitely still enjoy this engaging story.

Jordan is back in Lubbock and setting down working roots as well as returning to the family business after his stay in Vancouver. We soon learn that he still has regrets over how he treated Annie when he left, but his experience with love is distorted by his unhappy childhood, with a bad example for a father. Little did he expect to have to come to Annie's rescue when he visits a wine merchants, but he is happy that he has re-engaged with her by being helpful.

Annie has certainly not forgotten Jordan, literally the one who got away, and then when he came back a few weeks later for a wedding, brought a girlfriend... she hasn't had time since to get involved with anyone, as she is studying hard to be an ER doctor. So not even Jordan can distract her from her goal, but he has a suggestion – friends with benefits, but no chance to be anything more...

Famous last words, of course, as we can tell that they both would like more, even if they rebuff each other in the interests of protecting themselves. Inevitably events overtake them, we get to learn their fears, their dreams, and their hopes, and in the end, just how far they will go to support each other.

There are some great side stories, like the winery sabotage, the ex-one-true-love turning up at the very worst moment, and the revelations which make all the difference in the world. Delicious writing, and catching up with plenty of old friends for Linde fans too!


Erica – ☆☆☆☆
Wright with Benefits is set within the Wright series universe. As someone who has yet to read that series, I didn't struggle as much as I assumed I would, not that there weren't bumps of confusion along the way, but I was able to read this as a standalone. It definitely sparked my interest to go back and read all the novels connected, which I wished I had done prior to reading Wright with Benefits. I believe the emotional payoff and entertainment value would have risen to a five-star read for me had I experienced the Wright family across the series.

As always, K.A. Linde is the queen of angst. Push-pull, will they/won't they romance. ANGST. Narrated by Annie and Jordan, a one-night stand turns into a second-chance romance, both of them believing the other wants different things out of life.

Annie is focused on her career and leaving Lubbock in her rearview, having zero time or energy for romance. After a one-night stand, Annie didn't believe she'd ever see Jordan again. For her, he's most certainly the one who got away, but when he shows back up in town with a girlfriend in tow, sparks fly.

Neither have time for romance, but that doesn't mean they can ignore the heat kindled between them. Friends with benefits seems like the perfect balance, until these pesky things called feelings get in the way.

The evolution of Annie and Jordan's relationship felt real, bringing all the feels. They grew together, personalities a good balance, with plenty of angst and conflict brought about by frustrating side plots.

I definitely look forward to going back to the beginning and reading the series as a whole, then rereading Wright with Benefits with fresh eyes.

Leo had recognized the shadows in Cantrell’s eyes. He saw that pain and loss in the mirror every day, and every day he ignored it. If Leo were to hazard a guess, it must have something to do with his failed marriage. No one went from luxury to low-cost without a damn good reason.

“Well, Mr. Nosy Ass, you still have to eat.” He gathered up the items, put them in a bag, and left his apartment.

Trudging up to the fifth floor, he figured Cantrell would’ve had enough time to cool off and they could calmly discuss the reasons why he should leave the management of the building to the people who knew what they were doing.

He knocked on the door, and he waited impatiently as Cantrell unbolted the three separate locks he’d had installed. After all that, Cantrell still only opened the door as far as the security chain would allow, but even in those few inches, Leo could see the consternation filling Cantrell’s wide green eyes.

“What do you want? Did you come here to keep yelling at me? I already said I was sorry.”

“Actually, you didn’t.”

“I’m pretty sure I did. And even if I didn’t, you had no right to call me names.”

Cantrell’s stubbornness began to grate on Leo’s nerves. That was why he didn’t waste time with people. Inevitably, they pissed him off, like this guy.

“I call them as I see them. And are you going to stand there and say to my face you were right in fumbling around with the electrical system of this entire building that I’m responsible for?”

“If you came to berate me, I’m going to close the door. I have better things to do than listen to you.” True to his snooty words, he started to close the door, but Leo quickly stuck his foot in the narrow opening.

“I thought we could have an intelligent discussion, but obviously, that’s not happening. So here.” He held up the grocery bag. “I got the stuff you left behind when you ran away from me in the supermarket. I knocked on your door yesterday, but when no one answered, I didn’t want to leave it and have the meat spoil. You’re welcome.”

Without waiting for Cantrell’s reply, he set the grocery bag on the floor and turned on his heel. At the top of the stairs he heard a door slam shut, then open, and Cantrell call out.

“Wait. Please?”

Leo closed his eyes. He really should walk away and leave that mouthy little fucker alone. “What is it?”

“Th-that was nice of you. You didn’t have to do it.”

“I know.” Leo crossed his arms and waited.

“Thank you. And…” Cantrell bit his lip. “I’m sorry. I-I guess I shouldn’t have tried to fix the problem myself. You’re right.”

The guy was pretty damn cute.

Oh hell no. Don’t even go there.

Morgan was just a doll, I loved him instantly! Leo, I had to warm up to. These two together were amazing. They balanced each other out so well. They were exactly what each other needed. There were times I wanted to smack Leo but in the end, he got his act together. Paul and his wife were great secondary characters. This was a fast weekend read with some laughs, steamy sex, and even a few tears. Highly recommend.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a really beautiful story of two men who have both survived being treated terribly by people who should have loved and cared for them. The damage may have happened at different stages in their lives, but it impacts them both deeply. Thankfully, both men have close friends who want the best for them and are prepared to be honest and consistent through their uncertainty and fear.

Morgan is starting over again, and has moved into a low rent apartment, with a surly superintendent (and owner) called Leo. The interactions between these two are fun and hint at a lot of heat between them, but also remind us of the damage inflicted on Morgan as he flinches when Leo gets close. Then things take a more serious turn, and we can only hope that they will both be able to handle the intensity of feelings between them.

I really enjoyed how Leo defrosted and opened up to Morgan. We know just how rare that is, given that his best friend, Peter, really knows very little. It is tragic to see him try and be the dutiful son in the face of the unpleasantness from his mother.

It really is the magic of love which gives these two men the reason to keep making an effort when things get tough, but it feels like it will be so worthwhile for them as they find their happily ever after together. Lovely story, perfect way to spend a day immersed in their world. Thank you, Felice Stevens, for another excellent story.


Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Morgan is starting his life over after leaving and divorcing an abusive husband. It's the first time he's been on his own. The apartment he rents is definitely a downsize from the spacious place he shared with his ex-husband, but Morgan doesn't care. He wants to prove he can do it on his own. Morgan's little mishaps draw the attention of the moody super and owner, Leo. Leo is an extremely private person carrying his own baggage but when an unlikely friendship plus starts, Leo and Morgan can't help but depend on each other.

I enjoyed this read and was invested in the characters and their path. Watching Leo and Morgan grow and open up to each other made for a sweet read. Highly recommend.

 

 

FELICE STEVENS has always been a romantic at heart. She believes that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. Her characters have to work for it, however. Like life in NYC, nothing comes easy, and that includes love.

She lives in New York City and has way too much black in her wardrobe yet can't stop buying "just one more pair" of black pants. This arrangement is either exactly what they need—or a total disaster

Oscar is a grouch.

That’s a well-established fact among his tight-knit friend group, and they love him anyway.

After all, hating Jack is less of a risk than loving him…

I’d never had friends until college. And even then, I wouldn’t have had friends except that Ronnie and I were freshman year roommates (before she transitioned, obviously), and she was friends with Dec and Mase and Mia, and they came around a lot and just sort of looped me in. It happened slowly over that first year and suddenly I had… friends.

What’s that thing with snake poison, where you take it in small doses every day to grow your immunity to it? That’s what happened with the Motherfuckers. Eventually I built up a tolerance to their, like, happiness and friendliness and optimism. Now my brain just recognizes them as a part of me. The same thing probably happened to them: eventually they built up a tolerance to my moods and freak-outs.

The most important thing you need to know about my friends is that they’re all way better people than I am. You can tell because they threw me a pity party. There’s the aforementioned Declan and Sidney, who got together during the commission of a video series called The Love Study on Sidney’s YouTube channel. Then there’s Mia and Ronnie, disgustingly married to each other. And the last of the official Motherfuckers is Mason, who once tried to get married (to Dec) and was left at the altar (by Dec). Which was awkward for a while, but now it’s fine. Though of all of us Mase is the one who wants a white picket fence and 2.5 kids.

Sounds fucking awful to me, but to each his own, I don’t judge, whatever floats your life raft, et cetera.

Since I didn’t want to get my impotent rage-slash-panic germs on anyone, I took up a seat in the corner and didn’t leave it except to use the bathroom and acquire victuals. By which I mean vegan, gluten-free, cauliflower-based pizza that turned out to be delicious. It used to be that my friends had an informal rotation for who’d sit with me, trading off for the duration of the social event, but that was before Jack. Jack was new to the group. Dec had collected him from work, and for reasons I didn’t understand (I would have suspected sexual favors if I didn’t know better), he kept mostly showing up to drinks with the Motherfuckers. And was now also on the invite list for ad hoc gatherings to celebrate catastrophic job loss.

Jack and I had no other setting with each other than arguing. Since neither of us was all that nice (and everyone else in the Motherfuckers was very nice), it worked out. He thinks he knows everything, I definitely know everything, and even though for the most part we would arrive at the same point from different angles, we spent most of our fights poking at each other’s angles to prove they were incorrect.

I probably shouldn’t have been surprised when it turned out bickering was actually foreplay.

Since the party was in my honor I was obligated to stay through dinner, and I did. In my corner. Weathering the well-intended reassurances of my friends was hard enough, but when Dec brought out one of those quirky adult card games where kittens exploded I had to get the hell out of there. Too much goodness on a bad day.

Jack apparently had a similar thought. It wasn’t the first time we’d made our escape at the same moment. This time, instead of parting ways on the sidewalk with a lukewarm we know each other through friends wave, both of us stopped.

He stopped a second before I did, which I immediately decided made him more desperate. It wasn’t charitable, but I believe in keeping track of who has the advantage in any encounter. Even a one-off.

“I live ten minutes away,” he said.

“Good for you.”

His lips twisted a little, from not-smile to not-impressed. “This is a pity fuck, Oscar. Take it or leave it.” With that he turned and made for a black two-door something-something on the other side of the street.

I hesitated. For about five seconds. But following up a pity party with a pity fuck sounded about right. “Just to clarify,” I called as I caught up with him, “I don’t do relationships.”

He hit a button that unlocked his car. “Just to clarify, I’m not offering one.”

Jack and Oscar are in the same circle of friends and hookup for what appears to be no reason other than convenience. Their friends convince Jack to hire Oscar to help him clean out his grandparents’ house, which looks like something out of an episode of Hoarders. I have to say, several times The Hate Project inspired me to do my housework, although perhaps that wasn’t the aim of the story.

The Hate Project is a romance story that wasn’t particularly romantic. There is little sentiment or traditional romance. They end up in each other’s company and, at times, it felt inevitable that something would develop between them, but they didn’t seem to care one way or another if it happened or not.

Oscar we get to know very well, and along the way I think Oscar got to know himself as the story went along; although at times, I thought he could have used a little more self-awareness. I could understand Oscar. I could relate to his depression and anxiety. When Oscar explained knowing he needed human company but not being able to stand having people around and having to be social, I wanted to track down the author and thank them for understanding and putting in words something I often feel.

For me, The Hate Project was just as much about Oscar’s personal growth as it is about his relationship with Jack, and I liked both parts of the story. This is the first book I’ve read by Kris Ripper and I enjoyed the author’s style and I appreciated having real, imperfect characters. The Hate Project was entertaining and relatable. Four stars from me.

“I’m fine, Archer. And I’m not that worried. A name I didn’t expect to see was up there, that’s all. It was a bit of a shock. Nothing I can’t handle.” Lie. Fat fucking lie. Actually, not fat. Tall, auburn-haired, green-eyed lie. Just when I’d thought I might be able to handle all this upheaval…

I’d had no warning about this, no time to prepare. I’d had no idea Max even worked for Edison. Sure, I’d tried to stalk him on social media a time or twenty over the years, but he didn’t seem to be on a single platform. No Facebook, no LinkedIn, not even an Instagram, which I honestly thought was weird for a photographer. Maybe it was a different Max Martino. My heart rate kicked up again as my gut assured me that wasn’t the case. I’d have to dig into some old issues of Easy Living to see if I could find out more. I also needed to come up with a contingency plan. How could I manage my new responsibilities and keep Max out of my space? There had to be a solution. My mind scrolled through possible options, and I felt myself settle. I could plan my way out of having to see Max again. This would all be okay. I took another shuddery breath.

Archer gave me a look that clearly said he’d be pressing me for more details when we were alone, but I didn’t care. My mind wasn’t on Archer, and I didn’t hear the rest of Jane’s presentation. All I could think about were a pair of bright green eyes in a rearview mirror as they’d driven out of my life sixteen years ago and how I was going to avoid ever having to look into those eyes again.

Sixteen years, that's a long time to be think about one kiss, but that's what started this all. Max and Sam are good together. I couldn't fully connect with either of them, but I still enjoyed the book. It was low angst and had amazing secondary characters that I hope get their own books. It's a good weekend read that will make you smile and sigh.
