Mary – ☆☆☆☆☆
This is the sixth book in the War & Peace series and is Vee's story. It picks up where book five ends, with Vee under Esteban's control. While he keeps her drugged, Vee thinks that Esteban is the love of her life. She doesn't realize that Esteban is only out for what he can get and right now he wants only what he can get from her, which is her body and her submission.

While Esteban and his brother, Oscar, plan a way to get back what was stolen from their father, they will use Vee as bait to get to Diego. What they don't realize is that Diego isn't like them; yes he is the leader of his own drug cartel and he gets what he wants when he wants it. Once he sees Vee, he knows what he wants and she is it.

Can Vee use Diego to help Esteban and Oscar or will she help Diego to rid the world of Esteban for good? Can Diego help Vee without losing his heart to her? Will Vee survive after all she has been through?

This story was just WOW from the very beginning and didn't turn me loose until the end. I love this series and hate to see it end with the next book, but I can't wait for its release.

This Isn't Fair, Baby is the sixth book in the War & Peace Series. The series needs to be read in order to completely enjoy the story as the author intended. This installment is Vee's story.

This Isn't Fair, Baby starts right where This is Me, Baby left us. Vee is under Esteban's control. She's been locked in a shipping container with her mother's decaying body. Only given minimal food and drugs that keep her completely dependent on Esteban. He keeps her mind in a fog and her body at the ready for his taking.

Vee is one fierce chick and her need for vengeance is strong. Diego's weakness is women. When he makes a deal with Vee to get them both what they want, he gets more than he ever expected.

Diego thinks I'm brave. It's an act. It's all an act. With him, I am brave because he's the hero in my story. But I'm terrified of the monster in this tale called Life.

I absolutely loved this story. Diego is everything I needed him to be. He's sexy with that cartel king killer thing going on. Vee's story is amazing and perfect in only the way Webster can make it. I can't wait to see what's next.


Shelby – ☆☆☆☆☆
Holy cannoli – this series is so twisted. I LOVE it!

Book six in the War & Peace series picks right up where 5 left off.
Vee. Esteban. UGH.
Esteban is still the evil jerk we've known all along, and Vee is in his clutches. She's his captive, she's his victim, and she's angry. Oscar makes an appearance, but the guy we all knew and loved (at one time) is NOT the same guy we see in this story.
When Esteban and Oscar concoct a plan to get their empire back, then the REAL story begins!

I have to say I was ecstatic to see Diego again. He's a real ladies man, or so he thinks. He's powerful, he's sweet, but he's dangerous. Diego and Vee together are volcanic, the chemistry is amazing, the action is awesome, and I didn't want this book to end.

I refuse to give any of this story away – you need to experience it for yourself, but I will say this is another excellent book in an amazing series!

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This story is darker than the first book in the series and much darker than the blurb suggests. I expected a slightly kinky connection between a cop and a bartender, but the reality is a story about racism, homophobia, and corrupt cops.

This story about race, sexuality, and policing is topical and timely. I appreciated the author writing two POC leading men and I also appreciated the complexity of the problems facing both Vahin and Marlon. But I didn’t enjoy the simplicity of the ‘bad guys’ in this story. People are rarely as awful as Marlon’s partner and his over-the-top behaviour detracts from some of the more realistic experiences that Marlon and Vahin go through.

We met Vahin in book one, where his difficult past is hinted at but not explored. He is still a private character in this book but he shares his past with Marlon. I really liked Vahin’s character but at the end of the story I still wasn’t sure I knew him well. Similarly, Marlon shares his immediate work problems with Vahin, but there was so much more I wanted to know about Marlon as a person. Vahin and Marlon are both great characters, but they are both possibly too complex for the novella format to do justice to.

I’m really not sure this works as a romance. There is initial attraction between these two men, but the attraction leads to a hook up that one of them can’t remember. Marlon’s nervous closeted behaviour doesn’t build any further chemistry between them and their sexual encounters neatly fade to grey. The happy for now ending took me by surprise – I still wasn’t feeling the connection and they were apparently a settled couple.

Vahin’s family at Hamburger Mary’s provides the comfort and security we’ve come to expect in the last two books. ManDonna lifts the story with her humour and Pat provides unexpectedly fierce support for Vahin in a difficult situation.


Veronica – ☆☆☆
Vodka & Handcuffs was easy reading despite some serious subject matter in the way of racism and homophobia. I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Marlon and Vahin but there wasn’t a lot of overt romance or a lot of sex for that matter. Trouble caused by Marlon's partner, Andrew, causes plenty of drama and almost takes over the story, but I didn't mind.

I am a fan of novellas and Vodka & Handcuffs was an enjoyable read and kept my interest all the way through.

This is a perfect light afternoon's read. It is one of those unbelievably-quickly but slow-burn-at-the-same-time books. The whole story revolves around a couple of days, yet I know a huge amount about both people and can see where I would like it to go from here too!

If you like to read about people finding a second chance in a most unexpected way, and enjoy the cerebral as much as the actual, then I think you will enjoy this too.

What prompts a mild-mannered mostly law abiding woman to write erotica and erotic romance, a lot revolving around BDSM and capture/bondage? Is it the complex issue of taking or giving up control?

Vonna Harper doesn't know and she has given up trying to find the answer. It's enough that many readers are drawn to what some call the dark side. All she asks is that readers understand she writes fiction--a brand of fiction she finds fascinating.

Vonna has lost count of the number of books, novellas, and short stories she's written. What she has no doubt of, it's a hell of a ride.

This is the second in the series and the blurb states that it does not matter the order of reading; however, some big hints are made about the previous couple twist, so I would advise reading in order if you can. That this works as a standalone is definitely true too.

I found this to be a very enjoyable read, which had a good plot, twists, and some super, friends moments. It considers an issue which is rarely discussed, certainly not often in romance novels, and it does so very effectively I think. Both Abby and Gabrielle are interesting people, with very different career paths, but as they discover, many similar likes and concerns. They both do something very caring for each other with no expectation of thanks or recompense, which seals the deal.

Lovely story, great outcome; thank you, Ms. Springer.

This story dragged me into the alternate universe of MMO gaming. Even though my own gaming experiences are limited to Tetris and Freecell, I found Daphnis’ world fascinating and I really enjoyed their journey in this story.

Much of this book is an exploration of gender and sexuality – especially within the very visible world of acting and the more private world of online gaming. The characters in this story are wonderfully diverse but at times, some of the characters feel more like vehicles for the author’s message than actual people. This is a message heavy book and there are moments and characters that need a few more shades of grey and a little less idealism.

I am definitely much older than the target reader for this story. Daphnis and their slacker friends (who either live off of rich parents or somehow manage to exist in NYC as barely jobbing actors) are living the Millennial hipster dream. Gen X readers like myself probably need to refer back to their Douglas Coupland and Kevin Smith years if they are going to have any empathy for characters whose biggest concern is hate mail from players in an online game.

I struggled some with the structure and format of this book. The author assumes a basic knowledge of MMORPGs and often uses vocabulary that may be familiar to gamers but left me a little bewildered. Many of Daphnis’ conversations are written – often taking place within a game as electronic conversations. I found the constant shift to script-like conversations distracting and difficult to navigate. But again – I’m pretty sure I’m not the target audience!

Beyond my generation gap issues is a wonderful story of a journey towards honest self-identity. I loved the fluid nature of gender and sexuality in this book and I’m really happy to see more diverse characters in print. I really enjoyed this delightfully unconventional book.

Kissing Lessons by Susan Laine

5 Kissing Stars.

Jesus. I am so glad I was alone as I read this novella. My eyes were popping out of my skull and I'm still wearing a perma-blush as I type out this review.

Susan Laine is a new-to-me author, so I'll be checking out more of her work.

Merry and Boone may be 17 years old, but I can't classify this as a young adult novel (I have no idea what the publisher is classifying this as). From a 17-year-old's standpoint, I'd want to read it. From the standpoint of a 38-year-old, I wouldn't want my child reading it, but I totally get why they'd take to it like a fly to flypaper. Dayum!

Merry and Boone have been best buds since kindergarten, doing everything together. Merry is a bit socially awkward and totally innocent, whereas Boone is basically a stud. Merry asks his bud for help with kissing, because their prom was coming up and he didn't want to look like a fool when he kissed his date goodnight.

The novella was sweet, and adorable, and hotter than Hades. For something so short, it didn't have a feeling of insta-love/lust, and had one helluva tension-filled buildup. The entirety of the novella, save a few short pages at the prom, all take place in Boone's bedroom. Kissing lessons. The ever-masterful Boone rocked both Merry's and his own world.

... I'm pretty sure Boone was just making up kisses as he went along, which was adorable and hilarious.

Two warnings: If you're not in a cutesy mood, you may find the book hard to swallow (we all get that way sometimes, especially me) and some of the language (both dialogue and inner monologue) sounded decades older than 17 – I didn't care, because I was too busy blushing, but someone else might.

Recommended for MM Romance fans. Alright, I'd let my fictitious teenager read the novella, just not when I knew they were reading it, and not in the same room with me, because that's kinda skeevy. *fans self* Yeah, for something so innocent, Kissing Lessons was a scorching read.

This is the first of Klune’s books that I’ve actually read. In the past year, I have enjoyed several of his audiobooks, with the majority of those causing me to laugh so hard it was a wonder I didn’t pull a stomach muscle. As such, I was not the least bit prepared for how hard Olive Juice would hit me. I knew that Klune could rip my heart out with his words, but I did not expect the level of devastation I experienced while reading this novella. I have spent much of the past two hours bawling my eyes out and now have puffy eyes, a runny nose, and a book hangover that rivals that of books I have spent days reading. Seriously! A novella that I can read in two hours should not make my heart hurt this much. And yet, even as I read the final words, tears running down my face, I was still left with hope. Hope that David might accept the redemption that Phillip was offering. Hope that two men who loved each other so deeply, who endured a horrific tragedy no one should ever have to experience, and who lost their way might find their way back on life’s path together.

Olive Juice has one of the better written blurbs I’ve encountered in while. This may sound like a strange thing to mention in a review, but I’ve had discussions recently with others of how readers’ demands for trigger warnings has resulted in blurbs that often remove the element of surprise. While Olive Juice doesn’t contain content that would require a trigger warning, in my opinion, the blurb is written to entice a reader without preparing them for just how emotionally devastating the story can be. Even though Klune’s fans are familiar with how well the author is able to convey his characters’ emotions and how easily it is to fall into the story, that may not be enough because “the wreckage of the memory of a life no longer lived” does not even scratch the surface of what David and Phillip are dealing with. The author’s words are so poignant that I could not stop reading, no matter how hard I cried, no matter how much I wanted to walk away from the heart break, no matter how much it hurt, because there was always hope.

A few words of warning for potential readers. First, don’t read Olive Juice in public. I am not a pretty crier, but even if I were, there was no hope with this one as there were moments when I was full-on sobbing. Second, have your tissues handy. This was a two-tissue read for me and while that might not sound like a lot, it only took me a little over two hours to read it. Third, the story is told from David’s point of view and we spend a LOT of time in his head as memories play out. Personally, I don’t have a problem with books filled with character introspection, especially when it’s appropriate for the story, but I know some readers don’t care for that style of writing. I will say that for Olive Juice, it works perfectly and because I refuse to spoil the story for potential readers, it’s nearly impossible for me to explain why except to say that the way in which David and Phillip’s history and redemption plays out is well-suited for the introspective style. Olive Juice is one of those books that earned five stars from me not because it’s a story I know I’ll reread, but because it’s one that hit me hard, made me think, and will leave a lasting impression long after I finished it. It was not what I was expecting, but I’m so glad I read it.

John & Jackie has been released! Words of warning: you will have total Wookie cry face while reading this book. I regret nothing.

When TJ Klune was eight, he picked up a pen and paper and began to write his first story (which turned out to be his own sweeping epic version of the video game Super Metroid—he didn't think the game ended very well and wanted to offer his own take on it. He never heard back from the video game company, much to his chagrin). Now, two decades later, the cast of characters in his head have only gotten louder, wondering why he has to go to work as a claims examiner for an insurance company during the day when he could just stay home and write. He recently went slightly insane and moved to the East Coast from the Sonoran Desert with his fiancé and neurotic cat in tow.
