I don’t have time for an unplanned visit home to help out in my father’s struggling letterpress shop. My stint in Vermont will have to be short, for a couple of reasons:

He lifts a dark eyebrow. “I said, I want to work with someone willing to wallow with paper and design. Tease out the one-of-a-kind magic.”

His voice is quiet, soothing. It demands I take a deep breath and get out of my feelings.

“I’ve been reminded of how much of an art it is,” I say. “And that I can get by, but you—you have a gift.”

Rosy splotches bloom on his cheeks. “You know what you’re doing, too.”

“I don’t have the rhythm of it like you do. The innate… mastery, I guess. The relationship.”

Auden tilts his head and looks out the front window.

“What?” I ask. “He’s not coming back.”

“I know, but hearing the words rhythm and mastery and relationship when it comes to using a press... I'm looking for locusts, frogs, horsemen—any sign of the apocalypse.”

“Fuck off,” I mutter.

Rhythm, mastery.

When he repeats the words like that, I’m not thinking of cast iron machines—I’m thinking about sex.

I can’t believe he didn’t call me on how filthy that sounded.

He’s biting his lip, still a little pink in the face.

Okay, maybe he’s thinking it, at least.

“I could show you,” he says.

Meeting his gaze is like swimming in a lake, when you dive down, down on a bright day, and you have the dark depths below, and the streams of light from above, and it blends around you like you’re wearing a crown of green water and sunlight.

Holy fuck. He’s too much sometimes.

“Come here.” He crooks a finger for me to meet him at the Chandler and Price.

Definitely too much.

I join him anyway.

He takes my left hand and places it on the small shelf on the front of the press where we’d normally collect the cards during a run. The wood is smooth. And it would feel exactly like palming a flat piece of wood always does, except his big hand covers mine.

“Artisanry demands that relationship.” His voice is insanely low, but he’s only inches from me, so I don’t miss a syllable.

“I’m not an—”

“You have the artistic talent. You just need a little patience.” He puts his other hand on my right hip and positions me square to the press. He taps his toe against my heel, a silent command to put my foot on the treadle.

“We’re missing some parts.” Paper. Ink. The frame. Everything that actually turns into a product.

“We’re not making anything.” He’s at an angle to me. If he leaned forward three inches, his dick would be pressed into my hip. His left hand is still holding mine to the shelf. The other is a heavy weight just below my waist.

“I don’t understand,” I say.

“Just watch it, Carter.” He sounds amused. “You want to know every quirk. And not to try to learn when you’re rushing through eight jobs at once. When you have time to go easy.”

“Really.”

“Really,” he says. “Grip the wood with your other hand, too.”

“Grip the wood? You’re fucking with me.”

“A little.” I can’t see his face from where he is behind me, but I hear his smirk.

A little? A lot. I grab hold of the shelf anyway.

“Just work the treadle,” he says.

I press my toe into the pedal, making the flywheel whir.

“And listen,” he says. “Watch.”

I do that, too.

I’ve been so damn busy since I got here—paper in, paper out, paper in, paper out—I haven’t actually watched anything I’ve done.

The rollers, mesmerizing as they glide over the circular, iron platen.

“What color’s the ink?” Auden’s hand tightens on my hip. His breath tickles the side of my neck.

There is no ink.

“Green,” I say. I can’t get that sunlit lake off my mind.

(I don’t want to. Ever.)

My tie… Why am I wearing something meant to restrict my airflow? I want to loosen it, but Auden told me to keep my hands on the shelf, so I’m keeping my hands on the goddamn shelf. “Hear anything in the flywheel?” he says.

Just the whir and clicks and whuffs it normally makes. “Should I be?”

“Nothing unusual, but the more you know the sounds of it, the more you know exactly when to feed the paper.” He taps the top of my hand once. Twice. Again. Matching it up to some sensory memory that’s so ingrained in him, he probably dreams in that rhythm.

Anchored by his touch, I’m the one who leans in the three inches. My shoulder, touching his chest. His breath, much more than a tickle. A caress.

“It’s a pulse,” he murmurs, so gruff, the consonants and vowels mix together. His fingers brush the hollow above my shirt collar. My knees wobble.

“A pulse.” I tilt my head to the side, exposing my neck.

“Aye.” Bending his head, his lips land on the same sensitive spot.

My head’s turning faster than the flywheel.

“Auden.”

“See? You know the rhythm.”

Oh god, I don’t know anything right now.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the ninth book in a series of stories written by a collection of talented authors and set in Sarina Bowen’s True North world. I am really enjoying the connections, and yet the variety of styles offered by the different writers. This is a sexy, second-chance tale of two printers getting it together without ruining the traditions of the business!

Carter has taken a leave of absence from his high-powered job to help in the family handcrafted printing business to give his parents a chance to mend their marriage. This means he has to go back to the place where all his ideas of expansion were rejected, and he lost the love of his life when he left. But he loves his parents and would not want to stop their attempts at reconciliation. So he grins and bears it, and finding that nothing at all has changed, that no concessions to the modern world have been introduced, thus forcing the business to be small, provincial, and the artistic talents of Auden to be wasted.

As he tried to bring about acceptable levels of change, he also has to face the fact that he still loves the man who stayed behind – so now as well as trying to solve the business's problems, he needs to satisfy his needs too. I found the detail of the printing process utterly fascinating, although the fact that the presses were operated by two very sexy men may have affected my interest levels!

I loved the parallel stories of his parents as well as his romance a clever device to put them in context, and he most definitely got the message about working to live or living to work – and as you probably guessed, he chose life and love.

Mary – ☆☆☆☆
This is a first for me from this author and it sounded interesting. I was not disappointed, although I wasn't expecting it to end where it did.

Jared and his cousin, Mia, are trying to right wrongs done to their families by their own fathers. But in order to do this, they have to have people with the knowledge in the art of stealing and not getting caught. They have to find a forger (London) to make copies of the items they want to replace, a grifter (Nikki) to replace the forged item with the real one, and a hacker (Data/Audrey) to take care of all of their computer needs.

What Jared wasn't expecting was to have a strong pull towards the hacker. He has been using her expertise for a while now but when they met, the sizzle was there for them both.

Can this new team work together to make a wrong right? What happens when Audrey learns who Jared really is?

I really enjoyed this story, it is full of suspense that will keep you wondering how they will pull this job off without getting caught. With a romantic interest thrown in to make it even better. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a series, and I really enjoyed the setup, the reveal, and the twist – as well as the romance, which is rather wonderfully nerdy!

Jared and his cousin, Mia, suffered greatly when their fathers escaped justice after a huge Ponzi con. They have recovered most of their status by hard work and being independently wealthy, thanks to their mothers. They now want to right the wrongs the best they can, and plan on using the wealth of their absent fathers' friends to fund such restitution. To do that, they have to find suitable individuals to do the deeds themselves... and so they engage a thief, a hacker, and a forger.

I love how it all falls into place (haha!) or rather, how they have to really work at overcoming all the challenges and through it become a cohesive team, as well as Jared and Audrey forming an unexpectedly close bond. Mia really isn't impressed with how things work, as she is so careful of the plan working out.

Hugely entertaining story with the promise of some more crazy adventures to come, and I am hoping more passionate romance for one of the team!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a very enjoyable book, packed full of romance and based around a group of people interconnected by a wedding planning business. It is moving, fun, silly, and definitely entertaining. It manages to be really easy reading and yet at the same time, as the car-crash scenarios build, it is one of those books where I had to stop reading for a few minutes to regroup and go in again and see just how bad it could be.

The author has a keen sense of observation, and whilst sometimes I felt the cues, or the clues, were broadcast a little loud, I was happy to be in on the story, and ready for what was coming next. It is an interesting take on the variety of modern life, and loves, and gives the reader plenty to think about as well as being satisfying escapism. As one might expect of a romance novel. things generally turn out well for our five sets of protagonists, although not always just as we might have expected.

I definitely recommend this to you as a fun read which starts in a most unexpected manner, and there is plenty of hope sprinkled through the pages.

“No, Billie,” his voice is dangerously low as he angles his head so close to my ear that I can feel his breath fan across my throat, “women usually go out of their way to endear themselves to me. Not piss me off.”

Time to teach this prick a lesson.

His words set me off and without thinking I reach out towards him and hook my index finger into his crisp white dress shirt, right between the buttons. I can feel the muscles in his abdomen clench under my touch as I gently trace the tip of my finger across his hot skin, feeling the firm ridges I knew would be there.

To anyone loitering at the stables, our silhouettes would almost look like he was a vampire going in for a quick taste with the way he towers over me. I send up a silent prayer that no one can see us and close my finger around the fabric that’s brushing against my hand, pulling his torso closer to mine so that I straddle his thigh.

I hear his sharp intake of air and feel a familiar ache just below my hip bones. This is such a bad idea.

I look up, taking in the dark shadows falling across his brow and his almost pained facial expression. We hold each other in this limbo, facing off for a few seconds before I move so close I can feel the scruff on his jaw lightly scratch my cheek. His hands squeeze my ribs, trying to hold me in place.

At the increase in pressure, my nipples harden and goosebumps bloom across my arms unbidden. This is fine. A totally typical reaction to absolutely anyone touching me like this.

Disturbed by the way my body responds to his, I opt to up the stakes, fingering the collar of his shirt with my opposite hand and gently running my teeth along the lobe of his ear. I’m pressed so close to him I can feel more than hear the grunt that breaks loose from his chest.

For a moment I let myself imagine us together under different circumstances, all the delicious noises he would make as he moved above me, pressing into me so hard that our bodies would sink right into the mattress beneath us. Coming completely undone just for me.

It’s with that image in my mind that I slide my fingers up his neck and through his hair before grabbing a handful firmly. He stands stock still. Frozen.

“Well then, let me be the one to deflower you on this one, Boss Man,” I whisper against his ear. “You are absolutely insufferable.” I bite down onto his earlobe again, a little harder this time, which causes the air to leave his lungs in a loud hiss. “Now get your hands off of me, I’m not one of your playthings,” I finish, essentially dousing us both with a bucket of cold water and firmly pushing him away.

This is the first book in a new series, and I am already looking forward to the next installment. As someone who loves reading of the success of women in usually male sports roles, this wins out twice over on that score! That there is a fabulous romance wrapped around the horse racing story of the sullen horse come good.

Vaughn is taking a break from his high-power job to take over his grandfather's racing stables, after his death, and is desperate to find that the accusations of his hero's disreputable behaviour are untrue. When the new trainer turns out to be a woman, and one to whom he is immediately attracted, he wonders how much more controversy he can deal with. We watch on with a degree of concern as he is not always certain where his priorities lie.

I very much enjoyed the tension, the humour, and the inevitability of the outcome, even if the journey there was very inventive and enjoyable!

Very much looking forward to book two!

This may well be book one of a new series, but it is a part of a huge family of wonderfully interconnecting books. Just last month I read My True Love, which is also set on Silver Island, and so it was a real treat to catch up with some of that gang of friends again so soon – let alone some Dark Knights come to help out too. I love all of these books, and this is an excellent addition to the collection.

Abby and her sister, Deirdra, are back on the island due to their mother's death. She had been the source of much pain for the women after their father's death, but little did they expect to now find out they had a half-sister, Cait. Now the three of them have to steer through the business of sorting out the failing family bistro and their feelings for each other. In this book we get Abby's story, but no doubt the other sisters will get their chance, and there are hints already as to who!

Aiden has seen the run-down bistro and put in a good offer – something he keeps close to his chest when he meets Abby there one morning. The sparks between them are unexpected and even ill-timed, but strong enough that they choose to pursue them. And thus we are drawn into Abby's plans to revive the family business, using her cheffing skills and supported by Aiden and Cait.

I loved all the people who came and helped, and how it was clear that their mother has been well supported in their absence. It helped build a strong foundation for Abby when everything else seemed to be in flux. The descriptions of the newly renovated bistro sounded fabulous, and definitely worth a visit.

We knew from the beginning just how complicated the relationship between these two was going to be, and I did find myself rolling my eyes at their decisions at times! Even if a move comes from a good place, it can still be a mistake... but they did learn, and take a few minutes to take stock of the situation before going entirely off the deep end.

If you love this family of books, then this will be a good addition to your collection – it is not too bad on the needing a tissue front, but do expect to stay up late reading, as it is difficult to stop the pages turning.

I loved everything about this story but there seemed to be something missing, at least for me. I can't put my finger on it but there was something. Maybe it was the fact that Aiden waited so long to tell Abby who he really was and what his business dealing was. It seemed to me that he was hiding from her something important and he knew it could ruin what they were starting together.

Abby has come home to Silver Island to sell or keep their family bistro. After their father passed away, their mother kept the bistro going while Abby and her sister went on with their own lives. What she finds is a half-sister and a gorgeous man she didn't see coming.

As Abby and Aiden work side by side at the bistro, the relationship between them begins to sizzle and bloom. He wants to help her to get the bistro up and running and make it a success. All the while he is learning that you can slow down and live your life without working all the time.

Can Abby forgive him when she learns the truth? Will Aiden be able to explain why he did what he did to help her? Is there a future for them in Silver Harbor?

I love author Melissa Foster and knew I wanted to read this one even without reading the blurb. Her stories are always great and leave you feeling loved. This is a great story with a perfect couple that might not get what they deserve if they don't work for it. If you haven't read this author before, what are you waiting for, she is awesome.

Abby and her sisters are back on the island and trying to figure out what to do with their mom's estate. Abby has big dreams for her dad's old diner, but she has to convince herself and her sisters that she can pull it off.

Aiden is a workaholic. His sister has sent him on a needed vacation, but Aiden is finding it hard to turn his work brain off. He misses the hustle, he misses the meetings. Aiden knows that he needs a break, but it really isn't in him to do that.

During a chance encounter, Aiden and Abby find themselves a balm to each other’s souls.

While I normally really enjoy Foster's books, this one just kind of dragged on for me. It was incredibly long and not a lot happens. I wanted more spark, more intrigue, or something. I am hoping that Cait's story will have more to it. She intrigued me the most.

We’ve seen Holt and Brax dancing around each other, so to speak, throughout the entire Fog City series. In the previous book, Queen’s Ransom, both Holt and Brax were a mess, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Silent Knight to find out why.

The story doesn’t start in the present day. Instead, we are taken back to the day Brax and Holt met on an army base in Afghanistan 14 years before. Brax is instantly taken with Holt and vows to protect him. The men bond over weekly card games and form an unbreakable friendship. It was a privilege to spend time with Brax and Holt and I felt like I was witnessing something very private and very special.

By the time the story takes us to the current day, I was completely in love with Brax and Holt and couldn’t wait to see them reach their happily ever after. But in the present day, things aren’t going so well and Brax’s career and eventually his life are in danger. But the Madigans consider Brax a member of their family and mobilise to protect him while Holt provides emotional support. Enter plenty of scheming, danger, and action to go with the developing romance between Holt and Brax.

What can I say? I totally adored Silent Knight. It pushed all my lovey dovey romance buttons, and the heat and action got my heart and blood pumping. I love this couple and the wait for their story was definitely worth it. My only complaint is that this is the final book with the series and I’m greedy, I want more time with Brax and Holt. Silent Knight is a fantastic ending to a great series.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆☆
This is the fifth book in the series, and is absolutely brilliant in that it completely brings the storyline into a whole new light – finally explaining why Brax has been so close to the family all along. If you have not read any of the previous books, then this is not the place to start, but I certainly would encourage you to start at the beginning.

Holt has been the mystery in the family dynamic – protected by Hawes and Helena from actively participating in their less than legal business, we now get to see how the loss of their parents affected him, and how he and Braxton met. I was completely enthralled by the whole unravelling of their story and the love that clearly existed between them. Having watched both his siblings find their happily ever after, it was very satisfying to finally see Holt sort out the feelings of the past and get a chance at making his world right.

This was again a tense, passionate, and addictive reading – I highly recommend this series, and it has even found its way onto my series reread list, which is a very rare event!

Joel closed the front door behind him before unfastening Bramble’s leash. “You had to go running off, didn’t you? You had to go talk to your doggy pals.” Bramble gazed at him with those liquid brown eyes, his tail thumping on the floor, and Joel realized he was fighting a losing battle. He could never stay mad at this dog for long. He rubbed Bramble’s ears. “Just don’t do it again, okay?”

Bramble’s soft woof might have been Okay, but Joel would lay even money it was more a case of hey, why are you complaining? You got to meet a hot guy, didn’t you?

There was no denying it—Finn was hot, from the sweep of his hair off his brow, to those gunmetal eyes, the color of the ocean during a storm, to that scruffy beard and barely-there mustache. And then there was his build: the heavy coat might have hidden his frame, but it was obvious Finn was not a slight man, capable of being blown away by a stiff breeze.

It was no surprise to Joel that the word stiff came to mind. And now that he knew where Finn lived, Joel would keep an eye out for him when he took Bramble for a walk.

Down boy. You don’t know anything about him—except that he’s hot.

I think I'll be in the minority here, but this book was a miss for me. I was bored after the first chapter. Finn and his friends are great. Joel's ex-wife was great. I just couldn't get past the long drawn out longing for each other and not doing anything. It got old fast. I wanted to love this book. I'll try reading it again before the next book comes out because there were secondary characters that I want to see what happens with them.

Finn's Fantasy is the first book in the Maine Men series.

Finn's Fantasy is an age-gap, very low angst, and somewhat simple read. Joel is recently divorced. He wants to live his life as a gay man, but he isn't out to his children. Finn watches Joel walk his dog down the beach daily. Finn is hired by Joel to build a deck which turns into friendship which turns into more.

I unfortunately found this read a bit boring. The character building was all about Joel; very little was known about Finn except for his friends, who will appear in later books within the series. It was just an okay read and for that I am giving the three-star rating.

 

 

 

K.C. WELLS lives on an island off the south coast of the UK, surrounded by natural beauty. She writes about men who love men, and can’t even contemplate a life that doesn’t include writing.

The rainbow rose tattoo on her back with the words ‘Love is Love’ and ‘Love Wins’ is her way of hoisting a flag. She plans to be writing about men in love – be it sweet or slow, hot or kinky – for a long while to come.
