Stalking Buffalo Bill by J. Leigh Bailey

A smitten coyote isn’t the only one stalking Buffalo Bill.

A buffalo walks into a cafe. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but for coyote shifter Donnie Granger, it’s the beginning of an obsession. Donnie is a little hyperactive and a lot distractible, except when it comes to William. He finally works up the nerve to approach William but is interrupted by a couple of violent humans.

While William—don’t call me Bill—is currently a professor, he once worked undercover against an international weapons-trafficking ring. Before he can settle into obscurity, he must find out who leaked his location and eliminate the thugs. He tries keeping his distance to protect Donnie, but the wily coyote won’t stay away.

It’ll take both Donnie’s skills as a stalker—er, hunter—and William’s super-spy expertise to neutralize the threat so they can discover if an excitable coyote and a placid-until-pissed buffalo have a future together.

This is a ridiculously silly (but still kinda fun) shifter romance. It starts out quite sensibly with an excitable, twinky barista fancying one of his customers, an older college professor. But by the time the author has added a string of action sequences and fights between organised crime hitmen and shifters of every possible species, my head was spinning and I couldn’t keep track of who was doing what to whom.

I’m not sure how much of this story is supposed to be taken seriously. Some of the humour is intentional (gotta love the bison shifter named William = Buffalo Bill). Some of the humour came from ridiculous villains using exaggerated dialogue straight from a 1980s TV crime drama.

Even more of the humour came from the WTF moments where I tried to figure out what was going on. So many complicated back plots are referenced and not clarified in this story that I was sure I was jumping into the middle of an established series until I rechecked that this is book #1 on Goodreads.

There are also some serious moments as Donnie tries to figure out his future and work through his relationship with his family. I’m not sure this works terribly well in a relatively short novel with a whole lot of action and deliberate humour. William remains a mystery through much of this story and even by the end he hadn’t developed much beyond what he told Donnie about himself.

Without thinking too hard, this is a fun and exciting read. It won’t stand up to any intense scrutiny but there were some scenes that made me laugh and there really aren’t enough stories about buffalo shifters!

J. LEIGH BAILEY is an office drone by day and romance author by night. She can usually be found with her nose in a book or pressed up against her computer monitor. A book-a-day reading habit sometimes gets in the way of… well, everything… but some habits aren’t worth breaking. She’s been reading romance novels since she was ten years old. The last twenty years or so have not changed her voracious appetite for stories of romance, relationships, and achieving that vitally important Happy Ever After. She’s a firm believer that everyone, no matter their gender, age, sexual orientation, or paranormal affiliation, deserves a happy ending.

She wrote her first story at seven which was, unbeknownst to her at the time, a charming piece of fanfiction in which Superman battled (and defeated, of course) the nefarious X Luther. (She was quite put out to be told later that the character’s name was supposed to be Lex.) Her second masterpiece should have been a bestseller, but the action-packed tale of rescuing her little brother from an alligator attack in the marshes of Florida collected dust for years under the bed instead of gaining critical acclaim.

Now she writes about boys traversing the crazy world of love, relationships, and acceptance.

This Devil is Crazy by Pauline Hornsby

To reunite with her kidnapped son, a reclusive bookkeeper infiltrates an outlaw biker club, only to fall for one of the members.

When Jenna Mitchell enters the world of the Devil’s Prophets Motorcycle Club, unlike most women before her, she is not there to land herself a biker. After the late president of the MC kidnapped their baby and murdered her sister, Jenna could only look on from the sidelines as another woman raised Jack. Now is her chance to finally reunite with her son, and nothing will stand in her way.

Try telling that to Ali, the club’s enforcer. The stunning, quiet bookkeeper is like the start of his favourite sex fantasy, the part just before the secretary whips off her glasses, and shakes down her hair. One short meeting, and she’s all he can think about.

First love at thirty-two seems unlikely, yet Jenna can’t help falling for the sexy, dirty-mouthed biker. But it’s not all MC parties and off-the-chain hot sex for this interloper. When the man that wants you demands your secrets too, it’s only a matter of time before he will find them out.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes involving underage drinking, mentions a minor being offered for sex, the mentioned rape of a minor, murder and suicide.

Mary Jo – ☆☆☆
In some ways, this is a hard book to read. Jenna was a victim of a sexual assault at age 14 and due to a dismal home life, returned to the man who raped her after finding out she was pregnant.

The reader finds this out in bits and pieces over the course of the book, but the reader gets hints of what happened to her and can put the pieces together before the author spells it out. Jenna is hinted to be about 32-33 and has accepted a job with a MC to be closer to her now 18-year-old son.

As Jenna becomes immersed in the MC world, she begins to realize that not everyone is like the man who assaulted her; her new problem is trying to decide who she can trust and how far. Ali is one man that she feels that she trust with her body, but not with her secrets.

Her only friend is Casey, whom she just met, but we are not privy to how their friendship began. I kept waiting for Casey to be a "plant" – someone who befriended Jenna for their own agenda. Turns out the joke was on me because the truth behind what really happened to Jenna as a child was even more heinous than the readers were led to believe.

A good story, perhaps a little too much world building, but I will read the second book in the series.

This is the first book I've read dealing with a transgender character and sexual orientation. I was excited to read it.

Rachel, a lesbian, has sworn off men completely. Rachel finds her herself attracted to Bobby, who she thinks is another woman only to find out that Bobby is transitioning. Rachel is unsure of how to deal with this revelation seeing that she isn't interested in men.

I was intrigued into Bobby's background story, his reasoning for transitioning, and his family's take on him. I felt the society issues on trans people were well explained in the beginning. But at some point, this major issue between these characters was sort of glossed over and they were trying to make it work. There were a few things that were left unanswered. I'm not sure if that was an oversight or left purposely for a follow-up book. If that is the case, it should have been noted that this is going to be part of a series.

I did like the book but. for me personally, I just needed just a bit more.

Scorpio Hates Virgo by Anyta Sunday Release Blitz

This year is all about healing the heart, Scorpio. It’s time to leave negative attitudes and stoic facades at the door and let others see the real, more vulnerable you.

Percy Freedman is not grieving. Absolutely not, take that back at once. No, he’s entirely sure that selling his dead aunt’s home and leaving the neighbors he’s known for years is the sane thing to do. Who in their right mind would keep the house that smells like all the hugs he’ll never have again?

Nobody, that’s who.

Well, except his cul-de-sac neighbors. They all seem to think some paint and new furniture will clean the emotional slate. They all want him to stay.

Even his nemesis, Callaghan Glover.

Especially his nemesis, Callaghan Glover.

Lured into a game of Sherlock Gnomes, Percy finds himself hanging out with his neighbors more than might be considered healthy. Along with juggling new and surprising verbal grenades from Cal, and his burgeoning friendship with Gnomber9, Percy is starting to wonder if selling might have been the grief talking after all...

That’s right, Scorpio. With a little patience, heartbreak might be a thing of the past...

Scorpio Hates Virgo contains sarcasm, sexual content, a slightly sappy HEA, and an unhealthy obsession with dinosaurs.
It can be read as a standalone.

The image of Cal in his shower stuck in his head like a nasty thorn, following him back to his place an hour later. It took a concentrated effort and a ton of porn to knock it from behind his retinas.

It really didn’t help when, on the edge of coming a second time, he realized he was sliding the soles of his feet over the sheets Cal had given him.

It knocked the generic porn-dude out of his head and he found himself imagining Cal’s form through lightly fogged glass.

Cal stroked himself, his thick cock sliding through a slickened hand. He choked on a groan, his head rolling back. His eyes widened when he glimpsed Percy on the other side of the door watching but his hand didn’t stop. He stroked faster. His voice was mellow and dripped of sarcasm. Sarcasm and curiosity. “Perseus.”

“Callaghan.” Percy entered the shower, straining and naked. He walked through the mist spraying off Cal’s gently coiled muscles and pushed him against the wall. “You’re not meant to star in my sex-fantasies.”

Cal set those measuring eyes on his, bottom lip parting, the slick sound of his working hand growing louder. On every upward stroke, his hand grazed Percy’s stomach. “Sex in the shower is one of your fantasies? How highly imaginative of you.”

“Since your favorite weapon is your mouth, I think that’s what you should use.”

“To what?”

“Ruin me for any other man.”

Cal dropped to his knees, looking up smugly. “Like my mouth doesn’t do that already.”

Percy’s toes curled and pinched the sheets, and his cock unloaded hot and heavy, the orgasm wringing through every damn inch of his body.

Well. Wasn’t this peachy?

I really like this series. This was a sweet love story that wasn't insta-love. Percy and Callaghan have a great relationship even though they try to act like they don't. Cal's family is wonderful – even though they are going through a rough time, they are always so positive. The whole game with the cul-de-sac was hilarious. I love gnomes, so it was extra funny for me. This is a great book if you don't want a lot of angst and just need a feel-good story.

5 Slow-Burn Stars

Scorpio Hates Virgo is the second installment in the Signs of Love series. However, it could easily be read as a standalone. There is a bit of a what-are-they-up-to cameo by Theo and Jamie when they visit Theo's mom across the street.

Percy is the narrator for this installment, a childhood neighbor of Theo's. Percy is grieving the passing of his aunt, the woman who took him in when he left his family, and raised him with unconditional love. Not only did his aunt take him in, the entire cul-de-sac did as well.

After inheriting his aunt's home, Percy returns to the cul-de-sac filled with zany, slightly overbearing, well-meaning, meddlesome neighbors who wish to become the family he's never had in the absence of his aunt. The only problem is Cal – Percy's nemesis from his awkward teenage years. The cute boy across the street turned Percy into a hot mess, so instead of dealing with that, Percy and Cal created a tension-filled, love-hate frenemyship.

Percy is gun-shy after not only losing his aunt, but also being left for another man by his boyfriend. The massage therapist is helpful, kind, and giving, but this giver doesn't do well asking for help or taking from others.

The whole of the plot is a slow-burn romance, but also the homecoming and warmth of a family who chooses him as their own.

Percy and Cal do a slow dance of friendship, lust, and mutual attraction – the levity of their banter lessens the heavy weight of the grief surrounding all those in the cul-de-sac. Scorpio Hates Virgo runs the gamut of emotions, but it's the perfect balance of gut-twisting hurt, the warmth of family, the tension of lust, combined with unexpected humor.

I can't wait to see where Anyta Sunday takes the series next, wishing to have another injection of the warm and fuzzies.

*two instances of word mix-ups may have American readers stumped (series takes place in the US by an American narrator, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it). One of which gave me a good chuckle, because even though I knew what the author meant, it took on an entirely different connotation until I read it a second time. (laughing) I seriously thought Hannah was grabbing an actual torch, like a tiki torch for ghost-repellent during camping. So the mix-up had me laughing out loud for real when I figured out what was truly being said. I hesitated the first time I read it, imagining a 4-year-old running around with an open flame, and seriously doubted Cal's parenting abilities for a split-second.

Lounge = Living Room.
Torch = Flash Light (but seriously, an actual torch would've made it hilarious).

Matthew Hart is heir to the family fortune and owner of Hart & Home. When a near-death experience has him fretting over the future, he decides he needs a husband, and not just any husband—an appropriate man to protect the Hart legacy. The last thing Matthew expects is to cross paths with Jax Foster, his first love and the boy who crushed his heart when he disappeared.

Jax is unlikely to make Matthew’s list of suitable candidates. Bad boy, vagabond, deep in debt, with a father who can’t keep out of trouble, Jax has nothing to offer—except his heart and a second chance at the romance they never got to explore.

I really enjoyed this book. You have two boys who were best friends as kids, experimented, fell in love, and were torn apart. This book had a little bit of angst and a lot of love. Matthew and Jax are from different walks of life but that has never been an issue with Matthew, he has always loved Jax. When they unexpectedly reconnect after several years, you could tell that things were gonna start flying. Matthew's assistant, Adam, and Matthew's father find Jax after Matthew tells Adam he thinks he wants a man for keeps. There is no denying there is chemistry between Jax and Matthew. I love how they each thought of the other over the years and kept mementos, and I loved that Jax still remembered about the lemon cake. This was a sweet love story with a little angst at the end, but it was all worth it. Great story.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
Little bit classic fairy tale, little bit daytime soap opera – this book plays with familiar romance tropes for a fun, exciting story.

Matthew is another implausibly young, successful, and wealthy billionaire. Beset by scheming family members and supported by his loyal employees, Matthew sets out to find a husband and make an heir so his company doesn’t fall into the hands of his villainous cousin (yes – I did say this was a soap opera). Matthew is likeable and heroic but the character development is pretty superficial and he never really becomes more than a sexy ideal.

Jax is a talented and undervalued artist struggling to make ends meet. Since childhood, every attempt to succeed was thwarted by his father’s gambling addiction. Jax is also the scholarship kid Matthew fell in love with as a schoolboy. Again, Jax is sexy as hell but he doesn’t really develop beyond his hard luck story or his role as Matthew’s ill judged ‘bit of rough.’ Jax is a little more proactive than Cinderella, his past isn’t quite as sordid as Vivian’s, and he is definitely not as innocent as poor Anastasia, but we’ve seen his character more than a few times in the world of romance.

The relationship between Jax and Matthew is pretty formulaic, but they are sweet together and the chemistry between them is pretty hot.

I think this is Charlie Cochet’s attempt at light and fluffy. Even so, she has added a little attempted murder, an exciting kidnapping, and a bit of a mob connection. And this is a little bit sexier than most of the Dreamspun Desires books. There are also a few wonderful moments where the traditional romance formula slips and we get some of the sarcastic banter I love in Cochet’s THIRDS books. As Cochet’s THIRDS books are a little more my style than the Desires books, I loved the slight genre subversions and the hints of personality beyond the formulaic storytelling. However, I do think fans of classic romance will love Matthew and Jax.

Bringing you stories with heroes, humor, and heart.

Charlie Cochet is an author by day and artist by night. Always quick to succumb to the whispers of her wayward muse, no star is out of reach when following her passion. From adventurous agents and sexy shifters, to society gentlemen and hardboiled detectives, there’s bound to be plenty of mischief for her heroes to find themselves in, and plenty of romance, too!

Currently residing in Central Florida, Charlie is at the beck and call of a rascally Doxiepoo bent on world domination. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found reading, drawing, or watching movies. She runs on coffee, thrives on music, and loves to hear from readers.

M/M Romance
Triggers: Click HERE to see Avid Reader’s review on Goodreads for trigger warnings.

This is the second book in the story and while you don't necessarily need to read book one, there are a few characters that make a repeat appearance.

Darwin and Tom are a strange couple. Tom is an architect who is working on the same job as Darwin, who is a construction worker. They see each other a few times before Darwin muscles up the courage to ask Tom out.

What follows is a strange relationship where there could have been a great more development. I thought that this story lacked development of the main characters and instead, just kind of skimmed along. I wanted more.

Tom and Darwin then find themselves running from the very people that Darwin swore he would never return to. However, they never really do figure out who turns him in, despite the reader knowing, and then you have the brothers who are there, in the background, but not really a part of the story.

While this story was somewhat dry and there was very little chemistry between the main characters, I am hopeful that the next story will give me more.
