Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series, and I have the next one on my ‘look out for’ list already. This is a lovely read, with a good mix of humour, super-hot chemistry, and a romance with a twist.

I like the premise of the story, and the fact that both of them have to adjust their perspectives and their expectations for the future. It is a very cleverly written book, with some really sweet and heart-rending moments, as well as some very raunchy ones. Given how they started their acquaintance, it is fun to see them work hard to keep that spontaneity and yet at times, just know they have to hold back.

Parents will probably recognise some of themselves in both Gabe and Addison – and the lessons that they both learn by considering each other’s views. It is something that two parents who were always together would probably not even notice, but I liked the dynamic that is created. Some of the humour is just inspired, and really made me laugh.

If you want a cheerful, sexy read, this will definitely work – and you will learn quite a lot about alligators too; I am looking forward to sharing my newfound knowledge!

What's a guy to do when the woman he's been hooking up with moves to town without telling him? What's he supposed to do when she says she doesn't want to have a relationship with him because she's starting over in a new town and she has to take care of her daughter? Gabe's not sure, but he's certainly going to figure it out.

Gabe understands how hard single parenthood can be. He's been doing it for years with the help of his mother and brother. He's found a great support group that he can bounce ideas off of and take comfort in the fact that he doesn't have to have all the answers.

Addison is used to having to be both parents to her daughter. She's never had parents to rely on and Stella's father has never been in the picture. She's taught her daughter independence and the importance of be able to take care of herself. Addison can't help but wonder though what it would be like to have someone to lean on or ask for advice.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are flawed but trying to make the lives of their children better. Addison's realization that she doesn't have to parent Stella by herself is almost as enlightening as Gabe's. Gabe's ability to look at himself the way Addison does causes him to realize that he's relied on his family to shoulder the burden of helping to raise Cooper.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

“So you’re wanting to sign her up,” Maya said with a nod. “Okay, not creepy at all.”

“Uh…” Alex knew this was going to sound strange. “Actually I want to take the class myself.”

Maya frowned. “These classes won’t teach you about superheroes exactly,” she said. “They are kind of a combination of stage fighting and martial arts and self-esteem workshops.”

“I know.” He’d been on the website. Which is how he’d found out more about the studio. And where he’d stared at Maya’s photo before going in to look up more about her on the internet. Which was how he found out that her classes had won some local awards, she’d been a brilliant cop—who had not, incidentally, been fired for beating someone up—and that she regularly blogged about superheroes and their fandom and the psychology of that fandom. He’d bookmarked her page immediately.

“And the things you do in class sounds like the perfect bonding activity for Charli and me. I’ll take the class and then go home and teach her.”

Maya looked puzzled. “Why not just bring her to class?”

“She…” He swallowed. Charli would love Maya. Hell, if she saw Maya with those pointy-weapon-things, she’d want to be Maya.

But Alex had only seen Maya twice, and he’d already witnessed her get hit with a Bo staff, punched in the ribs, and cut with some kind of sharp hand weapon. Which reminded him that she’d been bleeding.

He looked down, but the bleeding had already slowed or stopped. Which was what happened when a person with normal blood got cut. But Charli didn’t have normal blood. She didn’t bleed faster, but she would bleed longer—because of the genetic mutation he had passed on to her.

He’d told her mother that Charli should be able to try whatever she wanted. But he’d also told her he’d keep Charli safe. If Charli took classes here, he would have to fill Maya and her staff in on the hemophilia and precautions and treatment…

“She has some special needs,” he said, cringing a little as he said it, knowing that Maya might easily jump to conclusions that were not at all correct. But it didn’t matter what she thought. This was the right thing for Charli.

But Maya didn’t even blink. “Okay,” she said. “I understand. Maybe…” But she trailed off while watching him thoughtfully without completing the sentence.

“Maybe what?” he asked.

“Maybe I could teach you and your daughter a private Super You class.”

He was surprised at her offer, but more—he was tempted. Which meant he had to say no. The timing for meeting a gorgeous, intriguing woman couldn’t have been worse. “I think a class with lots of other people, especially kids, would be better.”

“Why?”

Maya was direct. He liked that. And he could return the favor. “Because you look just as good in workout pants as you do in leather.”

Her eyes widened in surprise just a beat before her smile widened. “And that’s a problem?”

“It is when I’m trying to give all of my extra time and attention to my daughter.”

She studied him for a moment. “Okay,” she finally said with a nod. “And once you see the class, if you change your mind, she’s always welcome.”

Alex relaxed. “Thanks.”

“You’re not going to feel funny taking a class with a bunch of kids?”

“I love kids,” he told her.

“What about the tights and cape?”

“Tights and cape?” Alex repeated.

“The costume,” she said with a nod.

“Thought the participants all helped create their own character,” he said, realizing she was messing with him.

“They do.”

“Well, there’s no way in hell I would create a character that would wear tights.”

Maya’s gaze wandered over him, head to toe, before she said, Too bad.”

Avid Reader – ☆☆☆☆

Maya is amazing. She's strong, brave, and stubborn. Not only does she not let the fact that she was "benched" from the police department get her down, she started an entirely new venture with friends and now teaches kids how to defend themselves, all while playing! Maya is attracted to Alex instantly – so instantly, that she keeps getting injured because she can't focus. I really liked Maya's spirit and her ability to see past what most can't – she was able to get to the bottom of Alex even when he didn't want her to.

Alex is somewhat annoying for me. He is what I would consider a non-risk taker, despite his condition. He has just met his daughter – a daughter he didn't know existed. That makes his situation stressful, which I understand, but I also really hated how he compartmentalized his life.

When it came right down to it, Alex was unwilling to alter his life for Maya and that broke my heart for her. I even shed a tear for her when things were at their worst.

I won't tell you everything that transpired, but despite their chemistry, Alex was kind of a dummy in this book. However, all ends well and I really wish we could have seen further into the future.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in the series and a real treat. We get to see friends made in the first story, and it is Maya, the feisty ex-cop's turn to experience love and romance.

There is a lot to commend this book – it deals with a number of difficult issues, but also a couple of very simple ones. Alex has been compartmentalising his life and keeping safe, until he sees Maya and immediately recognises the attraction and the danger. He seemingly cannot forget her, nor release himself from the boundaries he has set. Maya refuses to be limited by her injury, and pushes herself to pain to feel alive. Somehow the chemistry between them demands that they take into account the views of the other... and it is fascinating watching on. Add in the superhero obsessed daughter, Charli, and a very enjoyable read is created.

A most entertaining and absorbing read, thank you Ms. Nicholas.


Lee'Anne – ☆☆☆
I just didn’t love this story. I liked the characters and the writing is great, but the story just didn’t flow well for me.

Maya Goodwin is an ex-cop turned martial arts, fitness, superhero teacher. Her goal in life is to help children build their self-esteem and fit in. Alex Nolan is a pediatrician who specializes in hemophilia research, a blood disease that both he and his daughter (whom he just recently found out about) suffer from. Hemophilia is a blood disorder that causes you to have extreme bleeding if injured. Alex spends the bulk of his time spending time with his 9-year-old daughter, getting to know her. He doesn’t have time for much else, but when Maya comes into his life he can’t help but make time.

I think the thing that kept this from being a great story for me is Maya’s job. It’s very confusing and I just didn’t find it realistic. I did really like both Maya’s and Alex’s characters though and the other characters are pretty great, too – especially Maya’s friends!

She was still watching the ambulance, and she nodded absently. “Okay.”

He moved in front of her and crouched to get on eye level. “You can go right over and see them at the hospital. Mass General. If you’re not family, they might not be able to tell you much, but if you can get in touch with their families, they can come and sit with you, right?”

She nodded again but Zach wasn’t sure she’d heard him. He really wanted to know that someone was going to be there with her. Shock in survivors wasn’t uncommon. The that-could’ve-been-me thing could kick in at any moment if it hadn’t already. But there was nothing like seeing someone you cared about hurt.

He put his hands on her arms again, this time rubbing up and down and just ignoring how good her skin felt against his rough palms. Mostly. He needed to comfort her more than he needed to worry about how she made him feel.

“Do you know where Mass General is?” He didn’t love the idea of her driving herself over there. She was clearly overwhelmed.

Kiera nodded. “Yes.”

“You can get there?” he asked.

She nodded again.

“Zach! Let’s go!”

Zach glanced over at Reed. His co-workers needed help so he was going to be here for a while. He couldn’t be messing around, obsessing about a woman who liked to play dress-up. “Kiera, I need to go but…”

“Yeah, of course.” She shook her head and looked around. “You go.”

“But…” But nothing. She was fine, and he was needed by people who weren’t fine. “Okay.”

He had the fleeting thought that he wanted to kiss her goodbye. But that was crazy. They’d just met. In the middle of an emergency. No way should he kiss her.

Finally, he let go of her and stepped back. But not touching her didn’t do a thing to make him not want to touch her. He forced himself to turn away and head toward Reed, trying to clear his mind of green and gold sweet-smelling flowers as he went. But when he got about twenty feet from her, he glanced back.

And she was still standing there. Hugging herself. Looking lost.

“I’ll be right there,” he told Reed.

Reed glanced back. “Dude…”

“I know.” And he did. He needed to not be distracted. But the only way that was going to happen was if he knew for sure that Kiera was taken care of.

He jogged back to her side. “Hey princess, what’s up?”

She looked at him, and her look of confusion cleared. That made him feel stupidly good.

“I don’t have a way…”

She trailed off, and Zach frowned. “You don’t feel up to driving?”

“We brought Sophie’s car, and her fob thingy is with her.”

Ah. A little issue. “You have someone you can call?”

“I didn’t bring my phone.”

“You can use mine.”

“No one’s home. I live with Maya and Sophie,” she said. “Obviously, they’re not… there.”

Her voice wobbled, and Zach worked on not grabbing her and hugging her.

They’d just fucking met. Hugging and kissing wasn’t appropriate. Dammit.

“How about a cab?”

“I don’t have any money.”

He looked her over again, revisiting the curves he realized he’d already memorized. He could give her money for a cab of course. He could get her home. But she’d be home alone. He could get her to the hospital, but they wouldn’t talk to her and she’d be stuck in the waiting room for God knew how long. Alone.

And leaving her alone was simply something he could not do.

“You need to come with me.” He reached out and snagged her hand before he could tell himself that holding her hand was a bad idea.

Because it was. Her hand felt good in his, and the way she curled her fingers around his tightly and followed him without question felt good. And the idea that he was going to get to spend more time with her felt good. And all of that was bad. And yet, he pulled her along with him through the convention hall and into the heart of the chaos.

“What are we doing?” she asked.

“I need to go help with some more injured. And I need you to stick with me.”

“Me? Why?”

He looked over at her. Her cape floated behind her, and for the first time, he noticed the golden sword swinging at her left hip. Damn. That was kind of hot. “Because you’re a gorgeous kick-ass warrior princess, and the people in here are gonna need some gorgeous kick-ass stuff.”

She looked at him with surprise, but as he held her gaze, he saw something that turned him on even more than her smelling like candy—a spark of determination. She pulled up straighter as she walked, and he felt her hand tighten on his.

“Kick ass. Right. I can do that.”

He smiled. “And I could use some help from an interpreter.”

“An interpreter? I speak some Spanish but that’s about it.”

“You don’t speak geek?” He hoped he wasn’t committing a faux pau in calling her, and all of this, geeky.

But she actually gave him a half smile. “Oh, geek. Yes, I’m fluent.”

This was truly about learning that life isn't something you can completely control. Kiera is a strong woman – she knows who she is, what she wants, and she's not afraid to achieve those goals. However, from the glimpses you get to see of her past, you know that wasn't always the case. There was a time when she tried to bend, mold, and shift herself into the perfect view of someone else.

Josie and Aimee and Zach had a great life – at least that's what Zach thought. However, the issues within a family are usually hidden such that an outsider won't know what the dynamic is within a family. Zach learns this the hardest way possible. Despite being successful and loving his job, he's a fixer. When he can't fix things, he neglects himself in order to try and figure out a way.

This has a lot of dynamic built in. Aimee is struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister, trying to please her brother, and hiding the secrets of her parents. While finding a new circle of friends, she realizes that she is free to do so without fear of disappointing her brother and parents, because they all have their own things to work through.

Kiera and Zach are very different when they first meet, but both are unafraid to be who they want. I think that the relationship between Kiera and Zach is pretty organic from the beginning, despite them coming together fairly quickly. I think that Aimee helped to create the organic dynamic.

This was a sweet story with great characters. I do hope that more characters get their own stories and with this being a book one, I am hopeful it will be soon.

4.5 Sweet, hot and meaningful stars – rounded up because the more I think about it, the more I realise how much I enjoyed it!

This is the first book in a new series, and I cannot wait to immerse myself back in the company of this delightful group of interesting people. I did not read the first chapter of book 2 at the end though, because I knew just how frustrated I would be at having to wait for the next story! I do hope Ms. Nicholas is busy plotting, so that we get it soon.

Sometimes books which pitch two people at each other in a moment of crisis have an element of drama that never seems real. Here Ms. Nicholas has done exactly that and exploited it brilliantly through an online world. I cannot emphasise how cleverly she leads us down a path of reality, to then use the online world to make us laugh, and wait for everything to come together. I am not someone who enters such worlds, but I absolutely get why it happens, and how it can help in times of trouble.

Parallel to this, Keira and Zach live in a world which is far from perfect, and approach it in a very different way – watching them learn about each other, become firmly entrenched in each others' hearts and lives is so enjoyable. They are clearly so right for each other, and yet...

With a good sized cast, and lots of potential stories in the future, I have a feeling this is one of those series that will become a best friend to be turned to in times of need. So, whilst I would happily reread this immediately, I shall wait until Maya gets her turn, and then indulge in a twofer. Thank you in advance Ms. Nicholas!

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series. To me, this book is about missed opportunities, hard choices, and second chances.

Avery is the poor kid who grew up to become her town's fire chief. She left Chance, Nebraska with nothing but her pride and came home with an education, determination, and a don't mess with me attitude.

Jake Mitchell is a hometown boy who's always had a dream to help people. That's why he signed up for the National Guard and left the day after graduation for basic training – not even telling his parents until the morning he left. And what he left behind was a mess.

Ten years later, he's still thinking about Avery and can't help but flirt – and more – every time he comes home. On the evening of their ten year high school reunion, sparks fly as usual and Avery and Jake take their relationship to a whole new level.

However, life is never simple and both Jake and Avery must overcome a lot of baggage to make the spark flame higher.

I love the idea of a female fire chief and this book manages it without even making a big deal out of it. Avery is a fascinating character and I love the way the author reveals her slowly as the novel progresses. Similarly, Jake is a perfect match and I enjoyed the way this couple grows together.

If it is unusual to start a romance with casual sex between the two leading characters, it may be even more unusual to start a story with casual sex in a shed during a tornado. I enjoyed the humour at the start, but I think I would have enjoyed the story more if there was more humour and less angst through the rest of the book.

While I enjoyed the pairing of the childhood sweethearts who must work together as fire chief and disaster response coordinator to rebuild their town after a tornado, I felt there was a little too much self-reflection, self-recrimination, and forced conflict between Avery and Jake in this story. The brooding and sulking during the aftermath of a natural disaster didn’t really ring true for two dedicated professionals, and I grew a little bit tired of the personal drama and found myself wanting to know more about how Avery and Jake managed to rebuild their town.

As a small town romance, this story is full of heart. Community spirit, colourful characters, and even a lost puppy add to the charm of this story. I liked Avery and Jake’s friends and I enjoyed Jake’s family. The tornado and the secrets in Avery’s past add a tiny bit of edge to a classic white picket fence romance, but this is feel-good home town charm from start to finish.
