The cats are back! Or should I say, the kittens are all grown up? Either way, I’m glad to be able to return to Cheryl Brooks’ Cat Star World where Zetithians have successfully staved off their extinction and the second generation of hybrids are beginning to find their own mates. I’ll admit that I’m not entirely sure I read the final book of the Cat Star Chronicles simply because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the Zetithians and the women who fought so hard to save them. So it’s beyond fitting that Maverick, the first book in the Cat Star Legacy series, would show the romance and accompanying adventures of Captain Jack’s and Tisana’s children.

I loved that Larry was so much like his mother, Captain Jack Tshevnoe, yet his father’s calm Zetithian nature tempered the recklessness he might have otherwise inherited from his adventure-seeking mother. Althea is even more of an oddity as the daughter of a Mordrial witch and a Zetithian. The magic she inherited from her mother forced her to become a bit of a recluse, ensconced on a distant planet disconnected from her family, as she learned to control the magic she could and avoid triggers for the magic she couldn’t, at least until she matured enough to improve her control. When Larry shows up on her doorstep asking for her help, she’s unable to tell her childhood best friend no, even if what he’s asking her to do and where she must go to do it threatens the mental peace she’s carefully constructed in the four years since she left home. But true to form in the Cat Star World, trouble and adventure seem to sense the Tshevnoe blood and soon Larry, Althea, and Brak are embroiled in a rescue mission that would have made Captain Jack envious.

The hardest part about writing a review of a book I’m absolutely enamored with is not giving away too much. There are so many things I want to gush about and remark upon because I loved getting back to Brooks’ world, but I would hate to spoil the discovery and surprises for other fans if they happened upon my review. Usually this is a dilemma I face when writing reviews for romantic suspense novels, but this is a long-established world and fans of the Cat Star Chronicles deserve to discover the delights Brooks has sprinkled throughout this first book – the big ones and the little ones – on their own. If you’ve not read the Cat Star Chronicles, don’t worry as I truly believe you’ll be able to read Maverick without issue as it’s about the next generation of Zetithians and Brooks does a wonderful job of referencing characters and events from the first series as needed, without engaging in an overwhelming info dump. Of course, if you’re new to the Cat Star world, you’ll have the benefit of being able to binge upon the Cat Star Chronicles if you find yourself as taken with the Zetithians as I was when I stumbled upon Captain Jack and Cat in Slave – one of the best freebie finds I ever snagged. At least while I wait for book two’s release, I can go back and make sure I’ve read all of the Cat Star Chronicles because I now have a whole new generation of cats to sink my teeth into. 😉

Must Love Cowboys by Cheryl Brooks Blog Tour

When you find yourself in Cowboy Heaven, things can get hot as hell...

SO MANY COWBOYS...

Shy computer specialist, dog lover, and amateur chef Tina Hayes has a thing for firefighters, but when she travels to the Circle Bar K ranch on family business, the ranch’s cowboys have no trouble persuading her to stay on as their cook. Especially not when she learns that brooding Wyatt McCabe—a man who makes her heart gallop like no one else can—is also a former firefighter.

HOW DOES SHE KNOW HE’S THE ONE?

Wyatt’s sizzling embraces leave Tina breathless. But being surrounded by a passel of smokin’ hot ranch hands can be complicated. With so many cowboys courting Tina all at once, Wyatt must prove to Tina that she belongs with him.

“Uh, Tina,” Wyatt began. “Listen, what you said about a massage… That actually sounded pretty good.” He paused, seeming reluctant to admit he needed help and even more reluctant to ask for it. “Think you could…?”

I stared at the bowl of pie dough. I didn’t need to invent a reason why I couldn’t stop what I was doing and rub his sore shoulder for him. But at the same time, I had this itch to get my hands on something other than dough.

And some itches must be scratched.

“Sure. Just let me wash my hands.” I put a plate over the bowl to keep the dough from drying out, then washed and dried my hands. When I turned toward Wyatt, my worst fears were realized.

He’d taken off his shirt and stood facing me, the broad expanse of his muscular chest, lightly dusted with dark, curly hair, fully exposed. “Where do you want me?”

Right here. Right now.

Heat sliced through my pelvis, stealing moisture from my mouth to send it gushing from my core. My attempt to swallow failed utterly. “There at the table is fine.”

He would probably smell bad after being on the road all night and most of the day. Bad smells usually put me off immediately. I figured I was safe. But when I moved closer, he smelled fine. Not freshly showered, perhaps, but nice. “Do you have any ointment to put on it?”

“There’s probably something around here somewhere, but for now, just use a little olive oil.”

I was hard-pressed not to laugh out loud. Getting my hands on a hot, studly cowboy might make my temperature soar, but by the time I’d smeared him with olive oil, he would smell like a salad.

Not sexy at all.

Unfortunately, after dribbling oil on his back and placing my hands on his shoulders, I was forced to revise that assessment. Wyatt would’ve been sexy even if he’d smelled like a barn. And salads, on the whole, were quite tasty.

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the image of the powerful-looking muscles in his back and shoulders, but I couldn’t hide them from my hands. His hair, although relatively short, curled at the nape. Using the excuse of massaging his neck, I touched it. For some peculiar reason, that affected me even more than touching his skin had done—the gesture was more intimate, somehow.

Eventually, I found the sore spots in his upper back and shoulder and kneaded them hard. Wyatt’s groans and sighs were like candy, enticing me to keep going until I’d thoroughly massaged every muscle in his body. Twice.

After a glance at the clock proved I’d been at it for about twenty minutes, I figured it was time to quit or I was bound to do something really stupid—especially since he was getting to me on a level no real man ever had. Surely twenty minutes was enough. Then again, he wasn’t asking me to stop. If anything, I got the distinct impression he wanted me to keep going forever.

But I had work to do, a pie to bake, and chickens to roast. “H-how’s that?” My voice was hoarse and hesitant, no doubt due to the parched state of my mouth.

Despite his long, shuddering exhale, his throat sounded tight when he spoke. “Good—um, better. Much better. Thank you.”

I took a step back as he got to his feet. “Glad I could help.”

Rather than staring at the floor like I normally did, I made the mistake of tilting my head back and making eye contact. His gaze held mine for a long moment. Once again, what went on behind those enigmatic eyes was anyone’s guess. He certainly wasn’t giving me any clues.

A flick of his brow signaled the end of the interlude. “Well then. I guess I’ll leave you to it.” He slung his shirt over his shoulder. “I might lie down for a bit before dinner.”

All I could do was nod. I waited until his retreating footsteps died away before letting out the breath I was well aware I’d been holding.

I would get used to him eventually.

Yeah, right. Maybe by the time my car was packed and I was two hundred miles down the road.

Men had always made me nervous, but when it came to getting under my skin, Wyatt McCabe took first prize. Closing my eyes, I breathed deeply for a few moments before resuming my task. I still had a lot to do in the next two hours. Letting Wyatt freak me out wouldn’t help get it done.

Cheryl’s Tip for Dating a Cowboy

Since we can safely assume that most of you aren’t the type to be at home on the range, here’s a city girl’s tip on the fine art of dating a cowboy:

Always remember that when you die in Texas, you don’t go to heaven, you go to Willie’s house. If you have to ask who Willie is, you might as well throw in the towel right now.

I’m going to preface my review by saying that I am a big fan of Brooks’s writing, and have been ever since discovering her Cat Star Chronicles. With that said, I apologize in advance if I get a little fan-girly in my review because I’ve read most of her books at least twice and several of them many, many, many more times than that. Even though I haven’t yet had a chance to reread any of the books in the Cowboy Heaven series, I absolutely adore this cantankerous group of cowboys and cannot wait to saddle up for another ride, especially with Wyatt at the reins.

While I was one of five women in my family who rallied together to care for my grandfather in his final year, there are so many ways that I connected with Tina’s character that it’s not funny (and no, I’m not going to enumerate them). Suffice it to say, much like Tina, I too would have loved and hated the situation she found herself in when she arrived the Circle Bar K ranch…all that hot, muscled cowboy goodness. Yummy and intimidating. Fortunately for Calvin, Tina’s manners were so well ingrained that she found herself unable to refuse the invitation to spend the night on the ranch, thereby enabling her to sound the alarm in the middle of the night when she realized that he was likely having a heart attack. In some books, this would seem like a contrived scenario that set the stage for Tina to extend her stay at the ranch. However, considering the reason why Tina was visiting Calvin and the fact that the man was nearing seventy, Tina’s presence felt fortuitous rather than forced. Being that she has spent the past two years of her life as her grandfather’s sole caretaker, her swooping in to save the cowboys from their own inept attempt at cooking breakfast the following day fell in-line with what we had already learned about her character. So it was no stretch of the imagination that she would agree to remain on as the temporary cook while Calvin was in the hospital. Much like Angela in Cowboy Heaven, Tina finds that a bunkhouse full of cowboys is fodder for many a fantasy and she, too, soon finds the one cowboy she wouldn’t mind be rode hard and put up wet by – even if he did intimidate the heck out of her in the beginning. And it doesn’t hurt any that Wyatt McCabe is a former firefighter – Tina’s ultimate fantasy man. But can what started as a bunkhouse fling, really go the distance?

As expected, Brooks did not disappoint in the chemistry department between Tina and Wyatt. I enjoyed her initial attraction to Dean and Nick, but her responses to Wyatt made it easy to accept the speed at which the relationship develops. Yes, things progress VERY quickly between Tina and Wyatt, but with the constant interaction between Tina and all the cowboys, it felt like more time passed than really had. That, along with my knowledge that relationships often develop quickly in this author’s books, kept me from feeling like it was rushed. Now what really surprised me about Must Love Cowboys was the romantic suspense angle. I was not at all expecting the mystery that cropped up surrounding Calvin’s heart attack, but found that part of the storyline to be a seriously exciting bonus to the book. A mystery, sexy cowboys, hot sex, and romance made Must Love Cowboys an excellent addition to the Cowboy Heaven series and has me already looking forward to my next visit to the Circle Bar K ranch.

This turned out to be such a cute and heartfelt read! I definitely enjoyed it.

Tina has spent the last few years devoted to taking care of her ailing grandfather. She quit her IT job and focused on him. After he passes away, she is determined to respect his final wishes and deliver something to an old friend of his on a ranch in Wyoming.

After arriving on the ranch, a bizarre turn of events has her staying a bit longer to help out. Along the way, she befriends and falls for a bunch of fun and flirty cowboys. Two of them take a special interest in here, but she is most captivated by the mysterious ex-firefighter turned cowboy named Wyatt. He doesn't seem very interested at first, but as they get to know each other and go through a bunch of chaos trying to sort things out on the ranch, he realizes the little IT tech is a lot more than a pretty face, but can he convince her to choose him?

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters were by far my favorite part. Their amusing and teasing banter throughout the story kept it fun. I also liked the touch of mystery the author added. I would recommend this to romance and western romance fans easily.

This started off with a bit of a ?? moment until I realised it was a snippet of a fantasy. But actually sometimes reality is even stranger than dreaming, and for one 42 year old widowed Mum of two college boys, that certainly seemed to be the case here!

Lucky lady; funny book, and what a cast of amusing and entertaining men, who clearly fuel Angela's fantasies. This is hot, funny and endearing - I shall be putting it on my "guaranteed to cheer me up" pile. Naturally there is a touch of drama thrown in, but really it is her imagination that makes this book cowboy heaven.

Angela☆☆☆☆☆
Ms. Brooks certainly knows her way around a cowboy or two or three… Cowboy Heaven is the second installment in the series and unlike Cowboy Delight it is a full-length novel, so while we still get plenty of hot cowboy action, we also get fully-developed characters, romance, and a little bit of suspense.

Obviously sharing the name with the main female character makes it even easier to imagine myself in Angela’s place as she picks up a sexy cowboy who’s hitchhiking. Her tendency to fantasize about Troy, her newly acquired stray, made me to connect to her even faster. While Angela’s fantasies were hot, they had nothing on the real thing when Troy shows her just how well he can ride. Having been alone since her husband’s death 2 years earlier, Troy proves to be just what Angela needs in her life but hiring him on at the ranch has farther reaching consequences than she ever anticipated. Angela soon learns that her ever-respectful cowboys have been kept at arm’s length by the ranch foreman and she sets out to shake things up by getting to know them and spending time with them – some more than others. Troy’s presence also seems to light a fire under Dusty’s butt and he makes his interest known and poor, lonely Angela finds herself the recipient of not one, but two cowboy’s attention.

As usual, Ms. Brooks did not let me down when it comes to the sex scenes. The chemistry between Angela and Troy was lustful and appropriate to their fling. Later in the book when she and Dusty finally get together, their shared history and feelings for one another generated a deeper connection that I felt when they interacted – especially after Dusty’s near misses. Fortunately for the reader, Angela is a woman who enjoys sex and isn’t afraid to admit it, so the resulting sex scenes are toe-curling hot. While there is a LOT of flirting going on, I liked that the three primary recipients (yes, I said three) took it for what it was and didn’t allow it to cause friction in the bunkhouse. On the contrary, there was quite a bit of ribbing and egging on of the flirtatious encounters. I will admit that Cowboy Heaven ended up having a heavier feel to it than I expected, but I thoroughly enjoyed the added dimension the suspense element added to it. Cowboy Heaven has been added to my reread list and I’m already looking forward to Cowboy Bliss, the next book in the series.

In the next instant, a bolt of lightning struck mere inches from the passenger side door, immediately followed by a clap of thunder that shook not only my brains but the entire truck. With a yelp, I braced my feet on my suitcase and pivoted away from the door, an action that landed me squarely in Steve’s embrace with his sharp exhale enticingly warm on the back of my neck.

Fear quickly gave way to embarrassment. Muttering an apology, I tried to scoot away, but the tightening of his arms stopped me. He wasn’t exactly preventing me from getting off his lap, but I got the distinct impression he didn’t want me to.

“Lauren,” he whispered. “Sit still for a minute. Please.”

His voice was husky and his breath tickled my ear, sending a rush of tingles all the way to my toes. I tucked my legs up under the blanket and leaned against him. Although rain continued to pound the roof, the hail was already diminishing in size. Another flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed by thunder and a loud, cracking noise that, thankfully, seemed farther away this time.

“Warmer now?”

In the wake of nearly being struck by lightning, I hadn’t given much thought to the cold, but I was no longer the least bit chilly. With the blanket covering most of my body and Steve wrapped around the rest, I felt downright cozy.

“I’m fine, thanks.”

I turned slightly, intending only to glance up at him with a smile, but what I saw in his eyes held me like a chain. The heat within the circle of his arms escalated as his embrace went from protective to intimate in a heartbeat. Shifting his hold on me, he leaned closer, caressing my cheek with his fingertips. With that gentle touch, fire surged through every erogenous zone I possessed. My lips parted seemingly of their own accord, and as he closed the distance, my eyelids fluttered shut.

As his lips touched mine, my body melted into a pool of liquid desire. I couldn’t even raise my arms. Never before had a kiss left me so powerless and yielding yet keenly aware of my surroundings—the softness of his lips, his hands on my skin, his hot tongue delving deeply into the recesses of my mouth. I was even aware that the rain was letting up. In the relative silence, I could hear my own sighs as well as his quiet groan as he slid a hand under my knees and tucked my legs behind him. Laying me down across the seat, he tossed his hat aside and a moment later I had about a hundred and eighty pounds of cowboy, boots and all, stretched out on top of me, kissing me like I’d never been kissed before.

My arms regained enough strength to curl them around his neck. No doubt seeing that move as encouragement, he parted my thighs with a nudge of his knee and pressed himself between them. Any resistance I might’ve felt fled as I wrapped my legs around him and pulled him against my aching pussy. He was as hard as I was wet, his erection grinding into my flesh in a way that left no doubt as to where this was headed—or at least, where he wanted it to go. On the fringe of my awareness came the roar of an approaching semi. The storm had passed on, leaving the highway free for the flow of traffic to resume. Not that it mattered…

Steve froze in mid-kiss and popped up off me so fast the sudden decompression of my chest left me gasping for air.

“Holy shit!” he exclaimed.

This is a short and sexy read, with some humorous scenes. I am not a great fan of insta-love, especially when someone is already engaged, but it wasn't a great stretch of the imagination to see that the engagement was a mistake, and Steve was clearly a good guy! I liked some of the side characters, and would happily meet them again.

A quick fast-paced read that ramps the heat level up to HAWT. Lauren Allen is on her way to Houston to meet her fiancé's parents when her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere on a hot summer day. After walking for miles, Lauren winds up at a little diner and a ride to Houston. Steve Williams is a widower and a rancher. Kate, the waitress, vouched for his trustworthiness so Lauren takes him up on his offer of a ride.

What Lauren doesn't expect is the intense reaction she has to Steve. There is something about him that calls to her. During the drive, the attraction between the two comes to the fore and Lauren has hard decisions to make.

Lauren's life is turning upside down, how can she feel so much for a man she just met? Does she take a chance and explore the feelings that Steve is evoking in her? Or does she stay the course and end up in a staid, safe relationship?

Yeehaw! Now that was exactly what I was hoping for. I discovered Ms. Brooks several years ago when I stumbled upon Slave as a Kindle freebie. As sci-fi erotica is one my guilty pleasures, I quickly devoured it and the next five books in her Cat Star Chronicles series (all that were available at the time) in less than a week. As you probably figured out, she is one of my go-to authors for sci-fi erotica. When she ventured into the contemporary romance genre with her Unlikely Lovers series, I was once again at the front of the line to buy and read them. And while I did enjoy them, her Cat Star Chronicles have reigned supreme as my favorite Cheryl Brooks’ books. However, after finishing Cowboy Delight, the Cat Star chronicles may have a challenger for that title.

As this is a novella, the story moves rather quickly and occurs over a period of less than 2 days. After a rather amusing (to me) sequence of events, Lauren finds herself in Steve’s pickup on her way to meet her fiancé’s parents – and no, Steve is not her fiancé. He’s just the widowed cowboy who agreed to give her a ride and yes that trip your mind just took to the gutter is right on point … thank you Ms. Brooks! When Mother Nature steps in and presents Steve with the perfect opening, he proceeds to demonstrate why bench seats are a good thing in a pickup truck while giving Lauren a preview of things to come. And as hot as that scene was, it had nothing on the actual sex scenes. Holy crap on a cracker can Ms. Brooks write a squirm inducing sex scene! She gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “Ride ‘em cowboy!” But when a new day dawns, Lauren must decide between a life of luxury with her fiancé or a life of comfort with her cowboy. Cowboy Delight is a lovely little tale of finding oneself served up with a heaping helping of steamy sex. This is one novella I know I will read again and I look forward to reading Cowboy Heaven to find out what delights Ms. Brooks has in store for the next cowboy.
