Love in 24 Frames by C.S. Poe

Love in 24 Frames by C.S. Poe.

Declan Groves is a CPA in New York City. His adult life is dictated by routine and monotony. The need to express himself, in ways his career and crippling shyness have never allowed, leads Declan to becoming an amateur stop-motion filmmaker. The problem with this—Declan is now in love with the Wandering Artist Studios receptionist, Shota Watanabe. Shota has always had a smile and engaging comment ready for Declan, but even if it’s more than casual politeness, Declan hasn’t been able to get out more than a tongue-tied sentence at a time. And a man like Shota surely has no intention of waiting forever.

So when an unexpected change to Declan’s daily schedule during Christmastime throws the two together outside of the studio, it might be the catalyst needed to explore what’s been unspoken between them. But if they’re to have a future, Declan needs to find a way to tell Shota how he feels before the magic of the holidays is behind them.

Love in 24 Frames is a sweet novella that I read in one sitting. I liked that this is story about men in their 40s. I really liked that even at 48 years old, Declan is shy when it comes social situations and romance. I particularly liked the simple way that this romance unfolds. Love in 24 Frames is a lovely story.

The Engineer by C.S. Poe

1881—Special Agent Gillian Hamilton is a magic caster with the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam. He’s sent to Shallow Grave, Arizona, to arrest a madman engineer known as Tinkerer, who’s responsible for blowing up half of Baltimore. Gillian has handled some of the worst criminals in the Bureau’s history, so this assignment shouldn’t be a problem. But even he’s taken aback by a run-in with the country’s most infamous outlaw, Gunner the Deadly.

Gunner is also stalking Shallow Grave in search of Tinkerer, who will stop at nothing to take control of the town’s silver mines. Neither Gillian nor Gunner are willing to let Tinkerer hurt more innocent people, so they agree to a very temporary partnership.

If facing illegal magic, Gatling gun contraptions, and a wild engineer in America’s frontier wasn’t enough trouble for a city boy, Gillian must also come to terms with the reality that he’s rather fond of his partner. But even if they live through this adventure, Gillian fears there’s no chance for love between a special agent and outlaw.

Based on the short story, "Gunner the Deadly." Entirely revised, newly expanded, and Book One in the exciting new steampunk series, Magic & Steam.

I don’t read a lot of steampunk, so I won’t even pretend to be well-versed in the genre or the terminology, so please accept my apologies in advance for any mistakes I might make. Perhaps it’s because the movie Wild Wild West was my first exposure to steampunk, that I tend to enjoy Old West themed steampunk the most. Then again, it could be that steampunk makes Old West stories and romances more enjoyable for me. That Poe added elemental magic to the storyline merely insured my rapt attention and I was engrossed. Suffice it to say, I absolutely loved The Engineer and read it twice before writing my review because I enjoyed it that much.

Assuming this series is headed in the direction I think it is, The Engineer strikes me as Hamilton’s and Gunner’s extended meet-cute. No, it’s by no stretch of the imagination a romantic comedy, but their first encounter certainly held quite a bit of charm despite the shootout Hamilton found himself in the middle of upon his arrival to Shallow Grave, Arizona. Then again, I did find Hamilton’s first display of magic and Gunner’s seeming disappointment at not being Hamilton’s intended arrestee to be amusing. So yeah, definitely a meet-cute in my book. And it just gets better as the two men put their differences aside in order to work together to bring down an even bigger threat.

Despite The Engineer being a novella, Poe manages to pack quite a bit of story and character development into it. While we only get a few tidbits of information, Gunner remains a mystery to readers and Hamilton throughout the book. However, it is Hamilton who is the focus of the development this time around. As a magic caster with the Federal Bureau of Magic and Steam, Hamilton uses his magical abilities to bring the bad guys to justice and make the world a safer place. But after meeting Gunner and witnessing how the residents of Shallow Grave treat the outlaw, Hamilton is forced to see that the world isn’t as black and white as the government would have him believe – and that a very thin line separates him from Gunner and the shades of gray that make up Gunner’s world. It is through this reevaluation that Hamilton realizes that sometimes people do bad things for the right reasons. And that the Tinkerer’s inventions weren’t the only things capable of explosions in the story. Talk about some chemistry! I just wasn’t ready for the story to end when it did and not because it wasn’t complete or left me on a cliffhanger, but because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Hamilton and Gunner. At least I know there’s more to come, so I’ll be over here, waiting impatiently for book two.

Kneading You by C.S. Poe

Christopher Hughes is new to the small New England town of Lancaster, New Hampshire. He’s been hired to save an old library from closing, but his obstacles include not only fighting for state funding, but a Selectman who wants to tear the building down in favor of a shopping center.

Christopher meets Miles Sakasai, a charming tattooed repairman hired to help restore the historical interior. Working in close proximity has both men falling hard for each other, and also provides Christopher an opportunity to learn about Miles’s passion for baking. As it turns out, Miles’s skills in the kitchen may end up being the key to saving the library—but only if his bread can rise to the occasion.

This is a lovely sweet romance. Christopher and Miles are adorable. I know that probably isn’t the way to describe grown men, but they are. Miles and Christopher fall for each other over in the library and have a fun and cute date scene. I learned that baking can be sexy. It made me want to bake – and I don’t cook.

If you are after a quick pick me up, something to leave you warm and fuzzy, I’d recommend reading Kneading You.

That Turtle Story by C.S. Poe – Warmest Wishes

Nor O’Brien spends his days in sunny Key West caring for and rehabilitating sea turtles. He doesn’t need anything else in life, expect maybe a significant other to cuddle with after a long day. But recent heartbreak has left Nor salty, and he’s not in the mood for anything, Christmas included.

Then Eugene Montgomery walks into Turtle R&R, claiming to have found a clutch of eggs in distress. Nor is smitten with the tourist at first sight, and at the suggestion of his screwball colleagues, indulges in some no-strings-attached fun. Nor and Eugene are quick to get along, happily enjoy each other’s company, and take in the island’s unique holiday pleasures together.

But Nor would never leave his turtles, not for any man. So when his rebound fling turns into strong romantic feelings for Eugene, it’ll take a Christmas miracle to keep the two together forever in Key West.

As a Key West resident, I LOVE the fact that That Turtle Story is set in Key West. There was a nice mix of “Oh, I know where that is!” and “Wait, does that place actually exist and can I go there for lunch?” moments as I read Nor and Eugene’s holiday romance. I adored how C.S. Poe managed to bring the quirkiness that is Key West, especially during the holidays, to life. That the two met and bonded over a turtle’s nest is perfect fodder for a future local legend, which merely adds to the realism of the story.

Nor is perfectly adorkable as a mini-Christmas Grinch who’s trying to put a bad breakup behind him. That he finds his resolve to guard his heart and his personal stance on one-night stands tested by an ab-flashing tourist who’s concerned about one of the most important things in Nor’s life – a turtle’s nest full of unhatched eggs – is a delightful touch. Watching the two guys get to know one another over a handful of days and seeing just how enamored Nor becomes with Eugene kept a smile on my face for most of the story. While I’m not always convinced of the effectiveness of miscommunication as the main conflict in romances, in That Turtle Story it made complete sense on so many levels that I empathized with Nor’s failure to broach the subject. After all, if you don’t ask the question you’re not sure you really want the answer to, then you can keep on hoping things will work out and living on the corner of ignorance and bliss. Fortunately for Nor, Eugene is just as enamored with him and isn’t willing to let Nor walk away without a fight, especially when they have the perfect meet-cute story to tell their family and friend. And seriously, Nor is the cutest nickname and a shortened version I’ve never encountered before for his name – yeah, you gotta get the story to find it out for yourself.

Now, because I couldn’t figure out where to work it into my review, I’m closing with my favorite line from the book… He whispered with absolute seriousness, “Eat the cheese.”

Color of You by C.S. Poe Audiobook Review

Bowen Merlin— yes, that’s his real name—accepts a position in the quaint town of Lancaster, New Hampshire, as the high school band director. He leaves New York City for the snowy countryside of New England just in time for the holidays. With class, homework, after-school activities, and a surprise Christmas concert to plan and rehearse, Bowen is plenty busy. And since he’s never had much luck with romance, factoring in time to find Mr. Right isn’t a priority…

Until he meets the proprietor of Snowy Ridge Apple Orchard, Felix Hansen. Suddenly, true love seems like a possibility for the first time in Bowen’s life. The two are a perfect match and fill the skipped beats of each other’s hearts. But as wonderful as Felix seems, he’s harboring scars that could end their budding relationship when someone in town goes to great lengths to sabotage their careers.

If Bowen is to survive the holidays, he’ll need to lean on old friends and new, convince Felix he’s worth any hardship, and prove they can come out of the catastrophe stronger if they do so together.

I am so glad I didn’t get a chance to read Color of You when it released last year because as much as I would have enjoyed it – and I know I would have – I cannot imagine not getting to enjoy it for the first time via Greg Boudreaux’s narration. I spent most of the book just grinning like a loon and when I wasn’t smiling, it was when I wasn’t supposed to be because I was too busy being ticked off or heartbroken. Seriously, my face actually aches a little from spending the last 6.5 hours smiling so much.

It’s not often that an author will open a book with such a spectacular display of clumsiness by a main character, and the author not only went there, but Poe did it well. I couldn’t help but fall a little bit in love with Bowen from the very first scene and that feeling only got stronger as the story went on. The main reason I didn’t have the same reaction for Felix is because I had to wait to get to know him as Bowen did – and that was a lot of fun. With that said, I think I started falling for him with the way he accepted Bowen’s invitation to drinks. That single scene communicated so much about Felix and was a sad but important red flag to Bowen that he not only had to proceed with caution, but he needed to do so very, very slowly. And even though I knew Poe would be injecting some kind of conflict in the story and even though I knew something was coming, I was wholly unprepared for what happened and teared up a bit at that one-two punch in the gut. Yikes! Actually, that was a triple punch in the gut, but fortunately the author made sure everyone got their just desserts – both the good kind and the not-so-good kind. I’m not sure which chapter I enjoyed the best at the end – the concert or the epilogue – because they were both perfect endings.

Although I haven’t been able to read or listen to as many of Poe’s novels as I’d like, I did have the pleasure of reading Joy. Suffice it say that I did a bit of a double take when the tattooed cook first cameoed in Color of You, rewound the audiobook a little to make sure I heard what I thought I heard, and then paused it so I could cue up Joy to confirm my suspicion that I’d already visited Lancaster, NH once before. To say I was delighted to spend a little time with Silas and Gideon would be putting it mildly because it was awesome to catch up with the guys to see that their relationship had continued to progress quite nicely. And no, you don’t need to read Joy before reading Color of You, but if you enjoy it, I’d definitely recommend picking up a copy of Joy too. And before I forget, yet again, I adored Felix’s son, Alan. He’s the kind of kid I was in school – kind of quiet, kind of shy, yet someone who flourished with a confidence boost from an unexpected quarter (in his case, Bowen). This feeling of connectedness to Alan was cemented when Felix tells Bowen that he “lucked out on the teenager lottery” because my mom said something very similar about both my sister and me several times during our teen years. Yeah, it’s not often I connect to a teenage character these days, but I definitely felt some serious camaraderie for Alan.

I rarely pass up a chance to listen to Greg Boudreaux’s narration because he’s my favorite narrator. So I may be a bit biased when it comes to reviews, but is it really a bias if the man is so talented that I get lost in the world he creates via an author’s words? To be honest, Boudreaux is one of the reasons I was finally able to begin listening to M/F romances on audio because he does such a good job creating voices for female characters that he paved the way for me to expand my listening tastes. While this is something I may have mentioned before in another review, it bears repeating because Color of You has a rather large cast of female characters and Boudreaux shines at crafting individualized voices for them. Considering that Bowen is a high school band teacher, the narrator has to create a LOT of voices for both teenage and adult characters and between his talent and the way Poe sets up the scenes, I don’t recall ever being confused as to which character was speaking when. Even though the book is a holiday romance set at Christmas, I suspect I will be listening to Color of You repeatedly before the next holiday rolls around thanks to Poe’s words and Boudreaux’s performance. And I sincerely hope that Lancaster, NH calls to Poe again soon because I’ve enjoyed spending time there and would love to see what else the author has in store for its residents.

Bowen Merlin moves to a small town in New Hampshire in December to take a new job as a music teacher. He meets orchard owner Felix when he accidentally drops hot cider all over him.

When it comes to romance, people judge Bowen to be a certain way based on his appearance. But appearances can be deceiving. Bowen is dominant and wants to be in a relationship where he can take the lead, but he has had trouble finding the right guy. He pursues Felix and the attraction between them is strong. Inside the bedroom, they are so good it was enough to make my body feel like it had turned to jelly. Outside the bedroom, they are quickly falling in love with each other while I was falling in love with them.

This is a really good, solid romance full of great conversations, characters, and relationships. There is more to the story than the romantic relationship though. We spend time with Bowen while he makes a new life for himself in Lancaster, including seeing what a great teacher he is and see him making new friends.

I totally adored Color of Love. While it is a novel set at Christmas, it is a great book to read at any time of year.

New Game, Start by C.S. Poe – Stocking Stuffers

Reclusive medieval scholar, Edgar Royal, has a crush. On a guy. Not a big deal, except that said guy, Walter Chase, is a famous online gamer who has no idea Edgar even exists. Edgar has harbored these feelings for nearly a year, and when Walter announces on Twitter that he’ll be visiting New York City as a guest at the GamerOn convention, Edgar decides he’ll be one of the thousands of fans who responds to the message.

He definitely doesn’t expect to be singled out by the humble, gorgeous, out-and-proud heartthrob. And when it comes to dealing with people, Edgar’s skills are pretty nonexistent. Even with Walter giving all the right signals, Edgar lacks the courage do anything about the mutual attraction growing through their online courtship. He’s always been better with the written word, so maybe the perfect Christmas gift will say what he cannot. But if Edgar can’t get the present to Walter before the convention ends, he may miss out on the boyfriend of a lifetime.

C.S. Poe is a new-to-me author, and New Game, Start was the perfect introduction to get a feel for the author's writing style. This short story packed a punch, reading as a complete story, with a start/middle/finish, leaving me completely satisfied. Even though it didn't take me much time to read, I was fully immersed, time not even on my radar while inside the story.

The awkward, undateable Edgar is a fan of an online gamer celebrity. Walter has a gigantic following, and is as attractive as he is charismatic. Edgar is intimidated, but replies to a tweet about Walter visiting NYC for a gamer con, thinking it would get lost in the mix of other fans' replies.... not only does Walter tweet Edgar back, he private messages him too.

New Game, Start was sweet, cute, romantic, and awkwardly adorable. I'm a sucker for a gamer story, for geek stories, and for celebrity stories, so this hit all those notes for me. What I enjoyed the most was how so few pages packed so much, without any of the filler and unnecessary detailing larger novels use to draw it out for readers.

All payoff, no filler, for those of us without a lot of time on our hands wanting to be entertained by a full story. The author managed to fit the romance and sexy time in there too, without overpowering any other facet of the storytelling, and it was all tied up in a holiday bow.

Highly recommend, and I look forward to more by this author in the future.

Joy by C.S. Poe

Down on his luck is Gideon Joy’s default state. He doesn’t know why he expected anything different on his cross-country trip, but not surprisingly, the hits keep coming—literally this time. Gideon strikes a moose with his car in New Hampshire, not only totaling his own vehicle, but damaging one belonging to local construction worker Silas Bright. He has no choice but to stay in Lancaster and take a job that’ll pay for the repairs. And in a town so small, Gideon’s always running into Silas. What starts as annoyance between them soon blooms into something much more romantic. But when Gideon’s notorious bad luck rears its head yet again, how many disastrous dates will Silas be willing to weather before realizing Gideon’s not worth it?

Despite Gideon’s desire to remain in the quaint community that has accepted him as one of their own, past fears of inadequacy threaten the very joy he left Los Angeles to discover. If he’s to find a happily ever after with Silas, Gideon must learn that sometimes it’s okay to not be the best. And true happiness might be waiting in a small town nestled among the great White Mountains.

I picked up Joy for a couple reasons. The first, one of my favorite narrators posted about how much he enjoys Poe’s writing and was excited about signing on to narrate one of the author’s novels. The second, the cover captured my attention completely and the blurb was one I could not pass up. While I have no idea how representative this States of Love novella is of Poe’s writing style, I enjoyed the heck out of it because watching Gideon find himself after he gets lost in small town New Hampshire was a ride I’m glad I got to take.

When Gideon Joy proclaims himself to be the unluckiest man “this side of the Rockies” after a run-in with a moose – literally – he isn’t exaggerating. The boy has bad luck in spades. Yet Poe avoided using Gideon’s bad luck as a way to garner cheap laughs. Instead, readers are treated to a serious story as Gideon comes to realize that the life he left behind in California is one that he doesn’t have to return to and that home isn’t just a place, it’s also the people who live there. And Lancaster, New Hampshire has a wonderful collection of characters who not only make Gideon feel welcome, but make him a part of their tight-knit community. Add to that a hot mountain of a man who is totally not Gideon’s type, yet appeals to him in a way no one has before and that has Gideon reconsidering his plans to return to California once he’s paid for the repairs to his and Silas’s cars. Of course, that decision would be easier to make if his patently bad luck didn’t keep rearing its damaging head every time he and Gideon went on a date. And yes, I did find myself chuckling a time or two at Gideon’s expense.

Even though the story takes place over the span of just a few weeks (as best as I can determine), Poe somehow manages to avoid the insta-lust or insta-love feel. Perhaps this is because the story is more focused on Gideon finding a path in life, one that includes the beginning of a relationship with Silas. In fact, even though he (technically) moves in with Silas within a week of their fender bender, we never see the two do anything more than kiss and flirt. I kind of enjoyed that fact that even though Gideon is obviously a flirt and has no objections to jumping straight into bed with someone he’s attracted to, he takes things slow with Silas, recognizing that there is the potential for something long-lasting between them. Despite its novella length, Poe manages to pack a lot into Joy and I enjoyed it so much that I would love for the author to revisit the couple and the good people of Lancaster, New Hampshire.

She has an affinity for all things cute and colorful and a major weakness for toys. C.S. is an avid fan of coffee, reading, and cats. She’s rescued three cats, including one found in a drain pipe in Japan who flew back to the States with her. Zak, Milo, and Kasper do their best on a daily basis to sidetrack her from work.
