The Edge of the World by Garrett Leigh Blog Tour

Shay Maloney is living his dream—on tour with his pirate/folk-rock band. But you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’re from, and that’s where moody filmmaker and researcher Ollie Pietruska comes in.

The band’s management persuades Shay to let a television company film a documentary about his roots beyond his adoptive Irish family, and Ollie comes into his life knowing more about Shay than Shay’s ever known about himself.

But while Ollie holds the key to Shay’s past, he’s also hiding deep scars. Even as the hardships of the tour bring them closer, Ollie’s demons threaten the blossoming romance. They might both reach the breaking point before Ollie realises he’s been standing on the edge of the world for too long, and it’s Shay who holds the key to his future.

A friends-to-lovers, rock star, road-tripping romance, with a guaranteed happily-ever-after.

This is the story of a journalist who falls hard for the lead singer of the band he joins on tour. As always with a Garrett Leigh book, the characters are complicated and messy and the attraction that flares between Shay and Ollie isn’t easy. I loved the music and I loved the way Ollie brings Shay’s past to life. It’s a beautiful story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This is definitely a book that needs a soundtrack, and readers who want to understand Shay’s music need to stream some Skinny Lister to get a proper feel for the ‘Shanty Punk’ his band plays. I love that the music has soul and I love that this isn’t just another rock star romance. Shay is a little bit magic and a little bit tortured genius and I love how he slowly lets Ollie into his life.

It took me a bit longer to warm to Ollie, but once I understood his gritty secrets I couldn’t help but fall hard for him. I love the passion he has for his work almost as much as I love his vulnerability. Ollie and Shay aren’t an obvious match but the chemistry between them is fabulous.

Beyond Ollie and Shay, I love Shay’s eccentric band members and the family that keeps both men grounded. The characters in this story are as beautiful as the music and this was a complete pleasure read for me.

This was a very enjoyable book to read – the characters, from the leads to the rest of the band, are all interesting, engaging, and though flawed, all decent human beings. It was refreshing not to have extreme drama in a band, but rather a real camaraderie and feeling that they all cared for each other and their wellbeing. That said, there is a good mix of dark and light and without doubt, the chemistry between Shay and Ollie has the reader willing it to go well from very early on in the story.

As Shay and his band tour, he will have his past revealed to him by documentary maker, Ollie. Adopted when very young, Shay has really only known his Irish parents, and his music is part of that identity. As his blood ancestry is uncovered, there is an enticing mix of nurture and nature that have gone to form the person that he is. That this happens thanks to the man he is falling for is somehow fitting, as they share something very personal as well as accepting the strong physical attraction that they have.

Ollie has his own issues, which make travelling on tour quite a challenge, but as we and Shay get to learn and understand his fears, he also finds a reason to move forward – Shay.

Thank you, Garrett Leigh, for a really lovely read!
