Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis

New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis returns to Wildstone with the touching story of finding your place in the world—and the people who make it home.

Piper Manning’s about as tough as they come, she’s had to be. She raised her siblings and they’ve thankfully flown the coop. All she has to do is finish fixing up the lake house her grandparents left her, sell it, and then she’s free.

When a massive storm hits, she runs into a tall, dark and brooding stranger, Camden Reid. There’s a spark there, one that shocks her. Surprising her further, her sister and brother return, each of them holding their own secrets. The smart move would be for Piper to ignore them all but Cam unleashes emotions deep inside of her that she can’t deny, making her yearn for something she doesn’t understand. And her siblings… well, they need each other.

Only when the secrets come out, it changes everything Piper thinks she knows about her family, herself…and Cam. Can she find a way to outrun the demons? The answer is closer than she thinks—just as the new life she craves may have already begun.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the fourth book in the series, and whilst I would definitely recommend that you read them all, and you do get to catch up with previous couples, this could be read as a standalone.

Piper had to grow up far too quickly and has borne the burden so long that she has forgotten to be a sister and friend to her siblings. Her need to make sure that they had all the best chances in life, even at her expense, has resulted in a division between them that this book brings into sharp focus. The heartbreak she feels at this realisation, and almost feeling of betrayal, is so hauntingly written it will stay with me for a long while. Add to that the fact that although she may have good friends, she has never really let anyone in or let anything out, is threatening to destroy her veneer of peace, and we can only want Piper to get all the good that she deserves and needs.

Following the death of his younger brother, Cam visits his father to help him out at the marina and to get to know him better. He also has another reason, but that is currently mired in secrecy. Little did he expect to fall for Piper, the next door neighbour. As secrets come out and her life starts to disintegrate, he realises that he needs her as much as she needs him, and that the chemistry between them is invaluable at helping them connect.

This is a complicated, heartwarming, and intense story. I loved the levels of complexity and misunderstanding between pretty much everyone, which had me trying to work out how on earth they could ever resolve this in a single novel! But of course, Shalvis pulled it out of the bag once again – I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
