This Scot of Mine by Sophie Jordan

A daring deception…

Desperate to escape her vile fiancé, Lady Clara devises a bold lie—that she’s pregnant with another man’s child. With her reputation in tatters, Clara flees to Scotland to live out her days in disgrace, resigned to her fate as a spinster… until she claps eyes on the powerful and wickedly handsome Laird Hunt MacLarin.

She’s the answer to his curse…

Laird of an ancient clan, Hunt needs an heir, but he comes from a long line of men cursed to die before the birth of their firstborn. When the Duke of Autenberry approaches him with a proposition—marry my ruined sister—it seems the perfect solution. Even better, the defiant lass stirs him to his very soul.

No escaping the truth...

Except marriage cannot set them free. No matter how much Hunt desires her. No matter how much Clara burns for him. Soon she is falling for her husband, but is love enough to end the curse? Or is the tragic history of the MacLarin Clan doomed to repeat itself?

This Scot of Mine is the fourth installment of The Rogue Files series, and I can attest to the fact that it can easily be read as a standalone. When I sat down to review this title, I made the surprising discovery that I've only read installments two and four. In the future, I plan on going back to book one, rereading two, and so forth.

Lady Clara is embroiled in several scandals of her self-creation in order to have an excuse to leave her affianced, whom she learned is not the man she felt him to be. With this being historical romance, with the societal pressures placed on women, this scheme took a lot of moxie on Clara's part. She flees to Scotland to her brother's for safety, who believes her schemes, thinking she's truly pregnant, which leads to some angsty deliciousness. On her journey, she meets Hunt...

After their meet-cute of sorts, where they didn't exchange names, Hunt is surprised to discover the woman he met is none other than his best friend's sister. Intrigued with Clara, Laird Hunt MacLarin feels he's found the solution to the curse he believes he's been afflicted.

Instant-intrigue, insta-lust, but the novel doesn't fall into the trap of insta-love. Clara and Hunt fight their attraction, leading to many banter filled interactions dripping with romantic tension, creating a believable connection. I couldn't read fast enough to see how they would behave around one another next.

Ordinarily, the purpose of a romance novel is to get married, a quick epilogue with a happily ever after, but this novel takes a different turn. Obviously in this genre, the couple will get together, so this isn't a spoiler. The marriage is a slight focal point, but not the ending. The mystery unfolds after the marriage, where the story turns unique, as the curse seems to come to fruition. Not to mention deceptions are revealed, where they felt they were doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, mainly Clara taking her brother's advice, as they both so badly wanted to 'cure' Hunt.

The novel was fun yet emotional, lighthearted yet at times heavy hitting. The unique premise made it a page-turner.

I highly recommend Sophie Jordan to historical romance readers. Not only do I look forward to the next in the series, I cannot wait to go back to the beginning, as it was a happy surprise to realize there are two books waiting for me that I've yet to read.

Sophie Jordan grew up on a pecan farm in the Texas hill country, where she wove fantasies of dragons, warriors, and princesses. A former high school English teacher, she's also the New York Times bestselling author of Avon historical romances and the Firelight series. She now lives in Houston with her family. When she's not writing, she spends her time overloading on caffeine (lattes and Diet cherry Coke preferred), talking plotlines with anyone who will listen (including her kids), and cramming her DVR with true-crime and reality-TV shows.
