“What do you think?” Matt slowed as they approached the entrance to Kitsilano Beach Park. The parking lot was mostly empty at this time of day. “Should we park here or find street parking farther down?”

“Doesn’t matter,” Pierce muttered. “We both know I’ll only last five minutes.”

Matt grinned and pulled into the parking lot. “Not to worry. We’ll build your stamina in no time.”

Speaking of stamina... Matt scratched at his thigh, drawing Pierce’s gaze.

He swallowed hard. Sipped his coffee. Eyed Matt’s profile as Matt backed into a spot. “What kind of strenuous activities do you expect me to be doing that I’ll need stamina?”

Putting the car in park, Matt side-eyed him. “Increasing your stamina helps reduce fatigue. Allows you to perform your daily activities at a higher level while using less energy.”

“Uh-huh.” Amused at the non-answer, Pierce sipped more coffee, hiding a grin behind his mug. “Is that all?”

Huffing, Matt popped his door open. “Get out of the car, LB.”

Pierce let his laughter loose, feeling giddy and happy and like Matt’s laughter gave him superpowers.

Until they got a few minutes into their jog.

“I’m—” Huff. “—dying.” Huff. “Jogging is...” Huff.

“Good exercise?” Matt prompted, not the least bit winded.

“Torture.”

Matt chuckled, but he slowed to a fast walk. Other joggers and cyclists passed them, but Pierce didn’t care much about anything other than gulping big breaths of air. On their left, the sandy beach was dotted with wooden logs for seating, and the ocean was calm under a blue sky peppered with the occasional cloud. In the distance, the mountains rose, tall and green.

Pierce sucked in a deep breath of ocean-tinted air, held it, and released it in a long sigh.

“How did you survive in landlocked Laval for two years?” Matt asked.

“Technically, it’s not landlocked. Laval is mostly on an island across the Prairies River from Montreal. It’s not the same, but there are waterfronts. I did miss home, though. It’s good to be back.”

“Yet you’d still move with Jason if he got traded again?”

Pierce blinked at Matt. “What makes you say that?”

“You sort of implied it,” Matt said, suddenly finding a hangnail interesting. “When you said you moved back here because Jason did.”

“Oh, well... I mean, generally, parents don’t follow their kids around, right? Especially when those kids reach adulthood?”

Matt raised an eyebrow, and if ever sardonic had an expression... “Yet here you are.”

“Sure, but...” Pierce shrugged. “I kept my apartment here for a reason, you know? Jase getting traded here was fortuitous. It gave me an excuse to return home, which gave me a reason to be close to Jason so we can keep repairing our relationship.”

“If he’d gotten traded to... I don’t know... somewhere in the States, you wouldn’t have gone with him?”

Pierce blew out a breath. “I might’ve gone with him for the first week or so, just to make sure he was settling in okay. Whether or not I would’ve moved there with him...” He rubbed his jaw, the overnight stubble he hadn’t bothered to shave scratching at his palm. “I honestly don’t know. I don’t spend much time mapping out what I would or wouldn’t have done in a situation that doesn’t exist.”

“But it could exist.”

Pierce stopped right there on the path, a frown pulling at his forehead. Once Matt had turned around, he said, “Are you trying to tell me something? Is Jason about to get traded? He just got here.”

Matt’s eyes were dark as sin under the autumn sun. “No. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just... curious.”

Curious because... he didn’t want Pierce to leave again?

Because... he was still in love with him?

Pierce nearly laughed out loud at the fanciful thoughts.

“Curious about...?”

Matt walked backwards, forcing Pierce to follow. “What your long-term plans are. I don’t even know what you do for work right now.”

“I’m a runner.”

Another sardonic eyebrow paired with an amused twist of the lips. “I beg to differ.”

“No,” Pierce said with a laugh. “Not a runner runner. A runner for an antiques dealer in Quebec.”

“Which is...?”

“I buy antiques for my dealer. She tells me what she’s looking for and what her budget is, and I run around looking for it.”

“Huh.”

Game Plan is the first book in the Vancouver Orcas series.

Pierce Langley-Brown thought he had found his person in Matt Shore, an ex-hockey player turned coach. But he hasn't had the best relationship with his son. After he and his wife divorced, his ex-wife filled his son’s head with lies about him, which caused his son to push him from his life. After his son had a non-life-threatening car accident, Pierce's life fell apart around him. The only thing he could focus on was his son, not his relationship with Matt, while a dark depression came over him. Giving up everything and moving to be closer to his son and repair that relationship was all he could do, until a friend said he should go to therapy.

Two years ago, Pierce walked out of Matt's life; he never expected for him to show up at the rink when his best player passes out from the flu. Matt was angry when Pierce just left, and he still holds some of that resentment. But seeing him all these months later has the feelings he's carried for Pierce, flooding to the surface. Can Matt trust that Pierce won't leave again? Can he trust him with his heart again?

This is a new-to-me author and I really enjoyed this. Matt and Pierce have such a complicated history and their chemistry is still so strong. I loved seeing them come back to each other and Pierce finally getting a real relationship with his son. I am invested in this series and can't wait to see what's next.

I’m grateful that Game Plan is dual point of view, because after meeting hockey coach Matt and learning that he was ghosted by the love of his life, Pierce, two years prior, I wasn’t feeling very kindly toward Pierce. When I read Pierce’s point of view and started to learn what he was going through, my heart went out to him and all I wanted was for Pierce and Matt to find their way back to each other.

This story deals with issues of mental health, and Pierce had me on the edge of tears a few times. To contrast, there are lighter moments and even a few laughs mixed in with a wonderful romance.

I am a big fan of m/m hockey romance and choosing to read the latest new series from Amy Aislin was a no brainer. I am pleased to say that Game Plan did not disappoint. Matt and Pierce’s romance made my heart happy, and it was a pleasure to experience their love. I very much look forward to reading more of this series.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the first book in a new series, although Aislin fans will recognise some of the characters from an earlier series. We get right down to the moral question of a relationship where one has the potential to influence the success of a player... but in a rather interesting twist, this is between a father and a coach, and they also had a relationship before the situation got complicated. To be fair, it was probably always a bit difficult!

I really enjoyed the whole antique-dealer angle, always fun to learn a bit about a different career path, and it doesn't immediately sit with hockey, but is cleverly interwoven. Obviously, the issues of protracted silence and, most especially, regaining trust, feature both romantically and with family – and I thought were dealt with in a very sympathetic and realistic way.

Matt and Pierce make a good couple and there is some great humour and passion as well as complexity in their relationship. I am definitely looking out for the next installment in this engaging series.

4.5 stars. Did I love it? Did I loathe it? Did I love that I loathed it? Can't decide.

Are you looking to take a hefty dose of angst? Then this is the novel for you.

This review is free of spoilers as I want readers to go in just as blind as I did. I just opened the book, didn't even read the blurb. It's written by Jewel E. Ann, which means I'd read it even if it was a grocery list.

No matter what Jewel E. Ann put Indie through, I was rooting for her. Let me tell ya, Indie was put through the wringer. The novel begins with Indie grieving her mother, where she finds succor with Milo, the much older ranch manager and emotionally supportive friend. Sounds delicious, right?

Add in nonstop twists and turns, evil familial nemesis, betrayals, heartache, heartbreak, moral ambiguity, angst, more angst, another dump truck full of angst, and a hero that I felt was sometimes cowardly and not deserving of my Indie. The world is against Indie and Milo, but I felt Milo helped it along the way.

Honestly, this nervous energy swirled around me as I read the novel, frustration causing me to speed-read. Once I calm down, now that I know the conclusion, I think I could actually enjoy reading it again without having an anxiety attack the whole time. Hey, I guess that was a testament to how emotionally invested I became, right?

Are you a fan of Yellowstone? Is Beth your spirit animal? Is Rip your favorite hero? Do you not mind when they do things that are in a moral gray area? Here, read this book.

This was a story full of unexpected turns and twists in the plot. I found it a very engaging read, and really had no clue how it was going to work out how I wanted it to!

We meet Indie when she is first grieving the loss of her adopted mother, and consoled by the ranch manager and her avowed best friend, Milo. Their affinity for each other is obvious, in spite of the age gap and Milo's respectfulness. As time moves on, these snippets of growing love and romance are thwarted in the most complex of ways, which you need to read for yourself!

I have been left thinking about this story more than many others – in fact, I think it is one of those that I need to talk about with a friend who has read it, to unpick just how it made me feel!

This is the sixth book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them all and in order, because they are all a lot of fun, but should you choose to start here, do consider reading back.

If you are a fan, then you will really enjoy catching up with all the previous couples and also reacquainting yourself with the unique inhabitants of Papillon. Quaid is the town's lawyer, and he lives with his widowed mother, running his father's practice. And whilst he always knew he would work there, his father's early demise has forced him to be his mother's carer far too young.

Jayna escaped Papillon after high school, and never intended to return. She became a lawyer and married well to further her career. That has all fallen apart, and she has to come home to her mother's trailer to regroup. She is inevitably resentful of this, and frustrated that the power wielded by her ex's family is closing doors to other jobs she wants. So, as much as to pass the time as anything she finds herself working in her hometown, with her long-time, high school crush as opposition.

As these two take to the ring in a fight to be seen and heard, to straighten out misunderstandings, and to cope with the intense chemistry, we have front row seats. Jayna is a wounded animal, and likely to lash out, and Quaid is unaware of some of her pressure points, but we know that they will fight it out and come out of it together.

I love the side stories, the crazy and the deep feelings, which are completely believable – that is the real talent of this author, to make me care.

This book is part of a series, but you don't necessarily have to read the books in order. Each book describes the quirky town that everyone loves.

Papillon is a town where everyone knows everyone and even when they fight, they still care and love each other.

Jayna has found herself somewhere she never thought she'd be. On the wrong end of a lawsuit, in trouble with the bar association, and back home in Papillon. Jayna's life has been knocked out from under her, and while she's happy to see her sister and her family, Jayna never wanted to settle in Papillon. Jayna had dreams that stretched beyond Papillon.

Quaid is the resident attorney of Papillon. He has stayed even though he could have gone. His family life is a wreck and despite his amazing friends, Quaid knows that a lot has passed him by. When he finds himself in court against Jayna, he can't help but be intrigued.

Jayna and Quaid have a great respect for their abilities as attorneys. It's nice to see their mutual respect. Because both characters have family trauma, both make missteps while trying to figure out what they want out of their temporary relationship.

Jayna believes that she needs to leave again as soon as possible and Quaid doesn't know if he can give more of himself than he already is.

While I really enjoyed the "drama" of the story – especially between neighbors – this book had some strange stops and goes; it felt rushed in some areas and dragged in others. The flow was somehow interrupted when it felt that it should have been smoother.

That being said, I still really enjoyed the book.

Jo is a local psychiatrist who knows that her past trauma has caused her to hide in this sleepy town. But when women start getting murdered, Jo will need to draw on all of her expertise to figure out who is hunting in her town.

Beckett is a self-proclaimed no lover person. He loves his town and knows that when someone is hunting women and killing them, he has to find out who and protect the people of his town. With Beckett as a self-proclaimed bachelor, it was quite difficult for me to switch over to him falling head over heels for Jo.

Aria is a bit of a mystery in this story. She's an autistic teen who happens upon a body from the murderer. Questions arise about whether or not Aria is capable of committing such a heinous crime or if she is a victim herself.

The story is semi-fast-paced, until it isn't. The author kind of puts the breaks on and tries to create a romance within the suspense. I didn't really like how Jo and Beckett's relationship "developed." It didn't feel very organic. Jo doesn't notice Beckett until she does, Beckett falls in love fairly quickly and somehow, they figure out the mystery of the town.

Overall, while the beginning was much more fast-paced, I felt that the whole romance detracted from the suspense and mystery. It was just an okay read for me.

“I’m okay,” I muttered to the room.

“Talking to yourself, Logan?” Izzy said from the doorway.

I spun to face her as she slipped inside and shut us in. I felt trapped, but she hadn’t closed the door on purpose because she didn’t know I was claustrophobic. Hell, she didn’t know a tenth of the things about me that’d make her stop and think before shutting us into this small room. She floated in on a cloud of perfume, her ivory skin flawless, every hair in place, and jewelry that would keep the garage afloat for years around her neck, in her earlobes, and weighing down her hands. I’d never have gone out of my way to go with a high-class girl like her, but she’d gone out of hers to find a bad boy. I couldn’t even regret that night, or the joyride in a stolen car, or the arrest, or everything after that… because out of all of it came Cassidy.

And she was every good part of me. She was everything.

“Izzy,” I acknowledged.

“Isabel,” she corrected, and fiddled with the handle of her purse. “Parker suggested that I talk to you alone before we reconsider the custody arrangement—”

“Which was made official with a court order two years ago,” I interrupted. “So, if we’re here to discuss me having Cassidy for more time, then I can agree to that without spending money on lawyers.” Money that I don’t have.

“Logan, stop.” She held up a hand, and I saw the French-polished nails—she used to wear her nails longer, painted them scarlet, but this wasn’t the Izzy I’d known oh so briefly, this was the new, improved Isabel, who wanted to slot back into the world she’d once tried to escape with her walk on the wild side. “It’s not that.”

“So, if you don’t need me to take her for more time, then what are we doing here?”

“Parker has been offered a long-term role within his family’s bank in Europe. Switzerland, to be exact.” She used words, but the rushing sound in my ears meant I couldn’t string them together in any order. Panic gripped my chest. I couldn’t breathe. Switzerland? That meant…

They want to take Cassidy.

“No,” I managed. “No.”

“Think of the opportunities—”

“No.”

“Please be reasonable—”

“You’re not taking our daughter to goddamned Switzerland.”

She winced at the harsh words, but I wasn’t going to be manipulated into thinking I was wrong in my reaction. How in God’s name would I see her? Would she fly back? Would I go there? How could I go there? Izzy was still speaking in that low, wheedling tone that reminded me of Parker, as if she had the right to stand there and rip my life apart.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is the sixth book in the series, and they are all worth a read. You could read this as a standalone, and then go back and enjoy the others.

I really liked most of the elements of this book, I am just not sure that they all worked together for me. There is really a lot going on, with multiple characters who we are not entirely sure whether we should or shouldn't care about them. That slowed the pace, and distracted me from the obvious potential of the relationship brewing between Logan and Gray. I bought their strong attraction, and even the lack of trust which Logan afforded any new person in his life, but the turn around to love was speedy, even for my romantic nature.

I thought their respective offspring did help to show their matching fundamental goodness, even if they had polar opposite ways of dealing with their natural fears of being a good parent. This theme, which has run through all the books, is well written and provides much of the fun parts of the book.

I am looking forward to the guys at Redcars getting their stories told in future books.

I have read every book in the series so far. You can read this book as a standalone.

I was excited, jumping into this book because I enjoyed previous books in the series. I had a really hard time getting through this book. I put it down and tried several times. It didn't work for me. I didn't feel the connection between Logan and Gray, especially how fast it went. Then the whole documentary thing just seemed weird to me. I think if the documentary aspect was removed, I might have been more engaged. I'll continue with the series; everyone isn't going to love every book and that was the case for me with this one.
