This is book two in the Hunt Legacy and it picks up where the first one left off. As Eleanor is trying to figure out who Becker Hunt really is, she is realizing that she is falling for him. But she knows that he is hiding something from her. There are too many things that do not add up. And you have to figure out where Brent figures into everything too. While Brent and Becker seem to be bidding on everything of value, Becker has stolen Eleanor's heart, Brent is trying to steal her away from him.

Can Becker keep Brent away from Eleanor? Will he tell her the truth about everything? Will their relationship end or can they get their happily ever after?

I loved how this story is filled with twists and turns, you didn't have a clue of who or what was coming next. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat. Author Jodi Ellen Malpas has a way of telling a story that will keep you glued to your Kindle because you have to find out what is going to happen next. If you haven't read anything from her, then I highly recommend you do. Start here and then you can read my favorite, the This Man series. Any of them really, just read them and enjoy them.

M/F Romance

Make sure you read book one first, because book two starts where one left off.

Eleanor is upset with Becker... She just learned that her trust was broken and she isn't quite sure how to process what she has learned. While she knows that she has never known another man like Becker, she isn't sure if she's willing to hear him out. She runs home and wants to forget that she ever knew Becker, but Becker isn't quite ready to let her go.

Becker knows that he messed up but he isn't willing to let Eleanor just walk away from him. She is his. I think for me, Becker was a little too possessive in this story. He seemed almost obsessive and it wasn't a good look. I wanted more of a relationship between Becker and Eleanor, but it seemed very one-sided.

While this story picks up where book one stopped, this book felt slower. You get to see more of the dynamic between Becker and his grandpa, which I appreciated, but you also only get to see the surface of their relationship. There seemed to be so much more.

I did enjoy the story and liked how the story finished. I do wish that the relationship between Eleanor and Becker didn't seem so one-sided. It was almost like a D/s relationship, but without the rules and while Eleanor didn't ever say no, it seemed somewhat iffy on consent at times.

In Strange Woods by Claire Cray Blog Tour

Gothic gay romance in the stormy coastal woods of the Pacific Northwest.

Reeling with grief after his wealthy family is mysteriously murdered, moody New York photographer James Worthington Crane decides to take his downward spiral to the rural Oregon Coast, where he’s just inherited a piece of property hidden somewhere in the woods upriver. But when James pulls into the decaying seaside town of Brooks, everyone thinks he’s someone else—an elusive local outlaw named Beau. Now James must fight through his grief to unravel a dark web of family secrets and forgotten history... with help from a soft-spoken local contractor named Hunter Quaid.

Hunter’s been on his own since he left his fundamentalist family at the age of fifteen. It’s taken years of hard work to build the simple life he has now, fixing up seaside houses while living alone by the river. Then James blows in like a winter storm, disturbing the peace and stirring up dreams he thought he'd given up. As their lives and histories intertwine in unexpected ways, they start to discover what it really means to know where you belong.

From the author of Merrick and Hidden Talents comes a steamy, tender romance inspired by the rugged beauty and offbeat history of Pacific Northwest timber country. In Strange Woods moves through ancient old-growth forests, abandoned logging roads, ramshackle seaside towns, decaying homesteads, coastal highways, and the stories hidden in the trees.

Excerpt

Hunter pulled his truck into one of the slanted parking spaces along the Brooks sea wall and turned off the ignition, cutting off Bobbie Gentry in the middle of Ode to Billie Joe to let the roar of the waves take over. It was windy out, and he took a second to rake his dark-blond hair into a stubby ponytail at the nape of his neck before getting out of the truck.

His work boots hit the asphalt with a heavy thud, and he strolled over to the rustic stone barricade to look out at the dark ocean. A wave immediately exploded up in front of him, white foam fanning out and dissolving like a burst of fireworks, and he filled his lungs with the sharp, salty air. It never got old, no matter how many times he came here. None of it did, though. Not the trees, the rivers, the sunsets, the storms. This rugged little chunk of the coast had been his most consistent, and sometimes his only, source of joy since the first summer his parents dropped him off at his grandma’s place upriver, where he now lived alone.

Today had been long as hell, but satisfying. He was in the middle of renovating a beautiful mid-century house on Cedar Crest, a wooded cliffside high up on the north edge of town. It was the biggest project he’d ever landed since striking out on his own as a contractor, and it was turning out to be a dream come true. The owner was some Portland banker who didn’t give a shit what he did as long as he stayed within budget, and Hunter relished the freedom to make actual design choices.

Matter of fact, life was pretty good these days, wasn’t it? Business was good, anyway, and that was a lot. Yeah. Steady work with nobody telling him what to do, a place to sleep by the river, all the ocean air he wanted every day… what more could he ask for? There was a time when he wouldn’t have dared to dream so—

A car alarm went off suddenly, jarring him from his thoughts, and he turned his head. Several seagulls were scattering noisily from the sea wall near a black hatchback several spaces away, its horn blasting and lights flashing. He couldn’t see what had set it off. A nosy gull, maybe, or the splash of a wave. At any rate, that wrapped up his relaxing after-work sit by the ocean.

But just as he was about to turn back to his truck, the driver’s side door of the hatchback clunked open and slowly creaked ajar.

Hunter watched, intrigued, as a hand slipped out through the crack, followed by an arm, and then a mop of wavy dark hair. Then, to his amazement, an entire tall, slim man slid out onto the pavement, pooling there in a tangle of long limbs and dark clothing.

The alarm was still making a ruckus. The man groaned low and rolled to his side, wrestling with himself for a moment before yanking a key fob out of his back pocket. He jabbed it toward the car several times until the alarm stopped, then fell on his back with an unintelligible mutter. Just then, a big wave spouted over the wall and showered him with seawater.

Hunter winced sympathetically. Hell of a place to be drunk off your ass. Dude definitely wasn’t from around here. He looked about Hunter’s age, stylish in a cool, classic kind of way. Black jeans, black boots, battered brown leather jacket. Nothing flashy, but obviously outside the local dress code of Carhartts, hooded sweatshirts, and rain gear. Hunter couldn’t help admiring the long lines of the stranger’s body, his carelessly tousled hair.

With a shake of his head and a soft sigh, he turned his gaze back toward the ocean again. Life was good, and all. He loved it here. So what if it wasn’t overflowing with romantic options for a quiet gay man with a taste for tall, slim guys dressed like drifters from the 1960s? No one got to have it all.

Life is good, he told himself stubbornly. Life is fine. Life’s going just great.

The sound of an approaching engine made him glance back over his shoulder, and suddenly he sprang into motion before he could think.

The drunk man was staggering onto the highway, his dark silhouette backlit by the high beams of a log truck that was roaring around the bend.

Another half-second would have been too late. The driver didn’t even seem to see them. The air from the passing truck threw him off balance as he yanked the drunken dumbass out of the road, and they both fell back on the pavement.

“You okay?” Hunter asked breathlessly.

This is a wonderfully atmospheric story. A murder mystery and dark family secrets are balanced by a gentle romance. This is the story of James, a wealthy New Yorker drawn to a small Oregon town because of a footnote in his mother’s will. As James searches for answers in the past, he is surprised to find a place for himself in the present.

James comes to Brooks a broken, isolated man who drinks too much and doesn’t feel he can trust anyone. He asks questions about secrets the locals refuse to talk about and seems to have a bit of a death wish. I love the growth in James in this book. The people he finds and the people who find him offer him both closure and a much needed sense of belonging.

This book is advertised as a romance but it’s a story about all sorts of relationships and James’ slow, sweet connection to Hunter is really only one of the important elements of the story. The two men are sexy together and there are some beautifully steamy scenes, but the story’s focus is James and romance is only one part of his life.

This is a difficult book to review without spoilers. I loved the story. The book feels both special and unusual and the characters are real and raw and flawed – and wonderfully relatable. The writing borrows from the Gothic tradition; the descriptions of coastal Oregon are dark and eerie and there is a fabulous sense of claustrophobia despite the immense open spaces.

Author Bio

Claire Cray writes gay romance featuring hot, complicated men in weird situations. Offbeat and character-driven with a gothic bent, her work has been described as deeply atmospheric and a little bit strange.

Born and raised in the rural Pacific Northwest, Claire takes inspiration from its rich, moody vibes: the ancient forests, rugged coastlines, eccentric characters, and whispers of dark mystery in even the tiniest little towns. Combine all that with steamy sensuality and psychological drama, and you've got a story by Claire Cray.

Isa is a strong, independent, brilliant woman who is working with a deadly virus. When her seemingly impenetrable lab is broken into and the thieves get away, she has heaps of guilt and is so mad she could spit fire. Isa is one of a few people who truly know what this virus is capable of and when she tries to explain it to Roman and his team, they are all a little less than enthusiastic about what Isa and her co-workers were working on.

Roman is a character that we've seen before. He's somewhat of an enigma. Silent, broody type. He didn't disappoint. He has lived through some horrible things and you get to see a side of him that you didn't in previous books. He wants to be strong and aloof, but Isa breaks those barriers with little effort.

The romance and mystery were perfectly entwined. I loved watching both unfold. Neither was the star of the story – they were equals and it made the story that much more enjoyable. I truly loved the mystery and the romance. Having a science background myself, I could tell that the author did a great job at trying to research what truly happens in those virology labs. Protocols and mannerisms were very well detailed.

You will not be disappointed with this story. You'll be wanting to know who is behind the mystery and cheering on for Isa and Roman. It was a wonderful story.

Sending his daughter off to college is the proudest day of single dad JaQuan Reynolds’ life. Everything took a back seat to raising her—including his career. He has no idea what comes next, but his newfound freedom is quickly curtailed by a crash deadline at work and the uptight, hovering presence of consultant Matthew Donaldson. He’s surly and insufferably sexy, and Jaq’s ready to check him out and write him off—right up until a work assignment forces them together.

Every day. From now until Thanksgiving.

Work and fatherhood have been Matt’s whole world for years now, ever since his marriage ended. His eldest son is getting hitched over Thanksgiving weekend, and he’s not going to let a work deadline get in the way of celebrating with his family—not this time. The hours aren’t a problem, but the executive assistant on the project might be. Jaq’s sexy voice makes Matt yearn for things he let go of a long time ago.

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
Learned Behaviors is another wonderful office romance from Jayce Ellis. Jaq, a personal assistant, meets Matt when he comes to assist his boss with an upcoming product launch. There is instant attraction, but the men don’t initially get along. But the single dads find themselves meeting outside the office when they discover their college-aged daughters are friends.

I loved that this story has single dads with adult children. The men are at a different point in their lives to those in many books of this genre. As a result, the issues that arise and cause conflict and uncertainty are different and those issues were things that were easy to relate to but not always easily resolved.

I really enjoyed the connection between Jaq and Matt because it is clear when the men connect and acknowledge their attraction for the first time that what is between them is serious right from the beginning. This was one of the things that had me fully invested in their romance. Also their working lives, which involve long hours that make it hard to stop work from overtaking your entire life, was definitely something I can personally relate to. It helped that the men are hot as hell too.

Jaq and Matt’s romance was lovely and sexy and when the story ended, I wanted more. I felt like we just got to the beginning of the rest of their lives and I wanted more time with them. A solid four stars from me.

Author Bio

JAYCE ELLIS has three loves: her husband and her two turtles. Hubby loves her back. The turtles she’s not so sure about, but they do love their sports (Oakland/Bay Area teams FTW!). She still hasn’t figured out why she lives in Northern Virginia, where there’s weather, instead of her home state of California, or even Mr. Jayce’s Florida, where it’s just... pretty. Jayce spends her days breaking up happily married couples (or so she’s been told, but really, what do exes know anyway?), and her nights talking maniacally to herself. Thankfully, the recorder catches her rumblings and turns them into words on a screen. Magic! Because really, painting nails is way easier when you don’t actually have to type, and with well over 500 polishes to get through, there’s a lot of painting going on.

Notwithstanding her no-good, very bad, horrible day job, Jayce seriously believes that true love conquers all. Even Maleficent said it. Sure, she was having an epic Mean Girls moment at the time, but she was right. The only thing Jayce loves more than writing about it is hearing from readers who feel the same way. Drop her a line; she’d love to hear from you.

Wild Child by Audrey Carlan Blog Tour

Wild Child by Audrey Carlan Blog Tour

The newest sizzling romance from Audrey Carlan, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Calendar Girl series.

Twice my life changed in a single day.

The first was when I lost my parents. Hand in hand I walked with my big sister up the steps of Kerrighan House, a foster home for girls. We were lucky to be met with open arms and a house filled with children just like us. Children who’d lost everything. From that day forward, we were raised as one big family. Our bonds of sisterhood were strengthened through shared experience, pain, sacrifice, and love. Sisters not by blood, but by choice.

Soul sisters.

The second day my life changed was on the worst day of my adult life. My boyfriend broke up with me via text. My sleazy boss hit on me, forcing me to quit a job I desperately needed. And the cherry on top, was getting pulled over by an FBI Agent. Little did I know, he’d also save my life that night.

From the moment we met, Agent Fontaine wouldn’t dare let me out of his sight. And between his alpha ways, kind brown eyes, and heroism, I was lost to the man who hid behind his job. But this agent had a rule: never fall for a woman you’ve saved.

Yet I wasn’t just any woman. I was known among my sisters for taking risks and dreaming big. I was the wild child of the group. We were raised to appreciate every day as the gift it was, and not let anything stand in our way. The more I got to know the brooding, serious FBI man, the more I realized maybe it was my duty to save him.

Excerpt

“Are you arresting me?” A deluge of tears fell down my cheeks as my chest constricted and my stomach plummeted.

“Ma’am just follow me. Closer.” He waved his non-gun-toting hand as he walked backward.

“I don’t understand. This is so crazy. I didn’t do anything wrong. I swear! It’s my car and I don’t have drugs. You can check it.”

“And I will, when you’re safely sitting in my car.”

“Oh my God! You’re arresting me!”

That’s when I lost it.

I punched my hands into my hair, tugging on the long, beachy golden waves until they were hanging off my now heated neck.

“This is unbelievable! The absolute worst day of my entire life. And my parents died in a fire! At the same time! And I had to go to foster care with my sister. And this day, oh my God. Sonia! My sister… no, Officer, you cannot arrest me. You do not understand what this will do to my sister. She’s the…”

“Ma’am! Get over here now!” The officer grated through a super scary rumble pushing me into immediate action.

When I got closer, he latched onto my wrist and tugged me close to his body. My chest slammed against his and I placed my hands to his muscular biceps. I stared up into the darkest set of eyes I’d ever seen. Like a black cup of coffee, yet with little golden-brown flecks at the center. His skin was an olive tone, his jaw cut square, framed by cheekbones that were sharp slashes as though chiseled into fine marble. He had dark brown hair that was longer on top and shorter at the sides. If I had to guess, I’d put him in the dark Italian stallion category or Greek god.

He was beautiful.

One of his hands moved to my waist where he squeezed, and he dipped his head so close to my ear I could feel his warm breath against my cheek. “We received a report that someone crawled into the back of a blonde woman’s red old-model four-door Honda Civic at a gas station. First two letters of the license plate are A2.”

“W-what?”

“I need to check your car. Fast. If it’s not you, another woman could get hurt.”

“Oh my god! I did get gas.” I held onto his biceps so hard I may have left nail imprints.

“It’s okay, you’re safe now,” he murmured, and I closed my eyes, taking in his woodsy and fresh linens scent. It helped calm me instantly.

Until we both heard the familiar metal creaking sound against the quiet of the cool night.

I whirled around and saw a thin, tall man standing next to my car, a full ski mask covering most of his face aside from cutouts around the eyes and mouth.

Before I could do or say anything, I was grabbed around the waist and spun behind the cop as the guy in a mask lifted his arm, pointed a gun, and fired off two shots.

4.5 stars of excitement, romance, and family

This is a really good story – fast-paced, tightly plotted, dramatic, romantic, and tragic. It really is a page turner from the get go, and make sure you have a tissue, because I think you may need one.

Simone is working three jobs and studying on the side, She lives in a poor part of town, drives a pretty rubbish car, but she has her independence. Somewhat surprisingly, her sister is a senator, and her family is a group of fostered sisters and her foster mom. Driving from one job to another something happens to her – which may give me a degree of fear for weeks after I fill up with fuel at a garage 🙁 – and then a very intense drama ensues.

Jonah is clearly a very sexy guy, and he is instantly attracted to the pocket rocket that is Simone. I loved how we got to know about her from her sisters and foster mother. Also that they speak to each other about everything, so there is no need for her to have to explain anything to the reader – a lovely device.

There is a lot of hinting as to possible future storylines, and I have to admit I cannot wait. I am a big Audrey Carlan fan and am confident that this is a series which I will be following closely.

Excerpt

Jake sat with his back against the headboard, smoking cigarette after cigarette, while re-runs of Friends played on the flat screen. He glanced at the time on the cable box for the fourth time, just as a knock sounded on the door. One side of his mouth drew back in a smile while he slowly brought his feet to the floor. He snubbed out his Marlboro in the ashtray on the nightstand and leisurely walked across the room. Another impatient knock on the door made him slow his stride, even though he wanted to run. He counted to three before he turned the knob. “I knew you’d come.”

Mac didn’t reply. He only stood there glaring at Jake with fire behind his eyes.

Jake knew that look so well. It was burning lust, overwrought with passion, and he allowed himself to drink in the man in front of him. How he’d missed that mane of deep red hair and those incredibly soulful eyes. They were bottomless pools of emotion. And they were boring into Jake with madness that seemed incomprehensible. They conveyed equal parts of love and rage.

Jake had always thought a hair separated love and hate, anger and passion, and that both sides of the emotions were interchangeable at times. Mac proved that theory, because seeing how his eyes shifted from hostile to deep longing and back again was like flipping a switch on and off.

Jake watched as Mac’s nostrils flared and his deep breaths blew his long hair off his chest. His hair and his upper body had grown significantly. The tight T-shirt strained across Mac’s broadened chest, and the short sleeves pinched the indent between his deltoids and biceps. Jake’s eyes dropped lower, and his knees almost buckled. Mac had worn the kilt. It wasn’t the same one he wore earlier at the show, which meant Mac had showered and changed, and deliberately worn a kilt at Jake’s request. Warmth, that hadn’t been there in a long time, filled Jake’s chest, and a crooked smile spread across his lips. “You wore the kilt.”

Mac pushed past Jake and marched into the room, tugging at the roots of his hair. He suddenly stopped and swung around, wildly. “I couldn’t stop fucking thinking about you! I can’t believe the way you get in my head!”

Jake’s smile broadened because he knew that passion lurked under all the anger. Mac wouldn’t be here if he didn’t care. There wouldn’t be fire behind his eyes, and his jaw wouldn’t be clenched. Labored breaths wouldn’t be blowing in and out of his lungs, and there wouldn’t be such vehemence behind his words. But Jake never doubted Mac’s feelings for one fucking minute. Not one fucking second. The two of them were bound together by some kind of invisible rope, that may stretch to the limits sometimes, but it would never break. Their lives couldn’t be more different, but their souls were cemented together.

Mac was his only friend. The only one who knew his truths and his weaknesses.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fourth book in the series, but could be read as a standalone. Although it does get us to the Rocktoberfest eventually, a lot of the story happens many years earlier.

Reid plays his songs on the Street of Dreams and has to pay protection money to Jake and his twin brothers. Which I have to say is a very unusual meet-cute indeed! But as we get to understand Jake better – Reid is a deliciously open and genuine guy, so we can get him straightaway. I loved the insight into Reid's family and how strongly it varied from Jake's. It helped to show just how dedicated Jake was to his brothers, just as Reid was to his music.

This is a gritty, intense but ultimately loving and successful romance. Enjoy!
