Damon Snow and the Nocturnal Confession by Olivia Helling

In a world of incubi and unicorns, there must be something capable of curing Byrne… right?

For months, incubus and prostitute Damon Snow has been given assignments from his long-time cull and now lover Byrne. But after Byrne nearly dies and they travel to Bath to take the waters, Damon assigns himself one of his own:

He must find a supernatural creature capable of curing Byrne.

But when Damon once again encounters the incubus Frost, Frost taunts him with the truth ― Byrne isn’t dying from natural causes. Damon’s touch is killing him.

Damon has to find a cure, and fast, even if he must break propriety and sanity to do so. But can he go so far as to confess he’s an incubus knowing he’ll lose Byrne forever?

Damon went on a bit of an adventure during this installment of his series. Byrne is now his lover, and poor Damon is beside himself with grief. As a way of channeling said grief, during their healing holiday to Bath, Damon goes on wild goose-chase looking for ways to heal Byrne supernaturally.

This book is much heavier on the supernatural, but there is still a fumbling awkwardness to our Damon. He truly is a joy to read in a way naive TSTL female heroines can't pull off. Charming, endearing, heart-breaking is our Damon.

When I got to the last page and it said The End but there was so much left resolved, I had a bit of a heart attack. Please, please tell me this story isn't over? Please?

... I'm not too proud to beg.

Olivia Helling doesn't believe in love at first sight... but maybe, just maybe, it blossoms along a few books. That is, after all, how she fell in love with her husband.

Olivia writes about the darkness and flaws from within, the struggle with self-confidence, self-perception and fear of failure, and fantasy and historical worlds that refuse to allow love between men. So be warned: happily ever after is not guaranteed.

The protagonist and love interest don't always end up together by the end of one book. But when they finally come together, their love will be a thing of beauty.

Damon Snow and the Viscount Temptation by Olivia Helling

The only thing incubus and prostitute Damon Snow wants for his dreaded “twenty-first” birthday is to spend the day at Byrne’s bedside. But Byrne is growing ever more distant.

Claiming it’s due to his ongoing struggle with his business partner, Viscount Ashton, Byrne assigns his next lesson: Damon will seduce Ashton into ceding to Byrne.

Damon desperately needs the extra money. As much as he’d prefer to stay in Byrne’s bed, he can’t refuse, and seducing the wanton creature he’d seen so many years ago seems easy enough.

But when the viscount offers Damon the respectable and lucrative position of valet, it comes with one catch: he’ll never see Byrne again. When it seems like even Byrne regards Damon as little more than a whore to be bought, can Damon afford the choice?

Damon Snow has been a favorite of mine since I was contacted to review the series. I've had this title on my Kindle for months, simply because I wasn't in a Historical Romance mood. In a way, I'm glad, as it was the perfect time to dive right in.

This is one series that I've always wondered why it's not more popular. Damon's narrative always hooks me from the first page. Damon Snow is a male prostitute incubus, but the paranormal tidbits are below the surface.

At the root of it, Damon is insecure (poor guy doesn't want his impending birthday), awkward, not nearly as enticing as he believes yet is more so in a different way, in need of love, and incapable of voicing his wants and needs. He sees himself as lesser, as I'm sure many in his position also felt. But he also doesn't believe himself worthy of love, which forces him to lash out like a terrified, wounded kitten.

While reading, I get the feels. Olivia Helling writes in a way that I experience the same emotions right alongside our narrator. I simultaneously want to kick Damon's perfect behind while giving him a huge hug.

There are a few intriguing side characters. Damon is in love with his mentor of sorts, who is dying, and he doesn't know how to handle it. His fellow molly I believe is in love with Damon, but he doesn't see it as such (thinking the man only wants to use him). His mentor's partner takes a center stage performance in this book, with a detailed BDSM scene which was almost as cute as it was hot (you'll have to read it to figure out what I mean by that). I just enjoy Damon getting his ass handed to him because he's so... just Damon.

Excuse me while I go fetch the next in the series. I don't have it for review, but I'll buy it and have it added to the posts just the same.

I truly believe this series needs some recognition. Sweet. Funny. Dark. Grieving. Very human yet other.

Wicked Reads Reviews – Damon Snow and the Incubus Rake by Olivia Helling

Incubus and prostitute Damon Snow wants nothing more than a repeat of his last fateful visit with his long-time patron Byrne. Not that he’d actually admit that. Week after week, Byrne’s door remains closed, until Damon discovers he’s not the only one paying Byrne a bedside visit.

Even Damon’s only friend Rogers seems ready to discard him if he ever does get into Damon’s pantaloons.

So when a dapper rake reveals himself as an incubus and offers to teach Damon how to bend men to his desires, Damon is quick to take him up on his offer, even if it means breaking a few of his own rules.

But the rake has a secret of his own, and men keep disappearing around him. In a world of only users and the used, who can Damon really trust?

4.5 Stars
Upon starting Damon Snow #2, I was happy to note the series' identity crisis was abolished. It felt 100% historical paranormal from start to finish. With book #1, it felt more of a historical romance with mentions of paranormal. Why do I mention this? I fear it would have been off-putting for a reader who didn't straddle both camps, wanting more of their favored genre. Olivia Helling manages to inject the charm of the era with the originality of the supernatural.

Well-written and easy to read, with the flow maintaining the narrator's voice, and a quick pacing which keeps the reader engaged.

This was an angsty, lust-filled novella that wasn't light on story. Damon is an insecure, Incubus Molly, who is lonely, heartbroken – even if he won't admit it – and completely endearing. Oft times a novella isn't as fleshed out as a full-length novel in the emotional depth department, with the characters coming off as 2 dimensional in order to fit a story in so few pages. But this wasn't the case in Damon Snow #2. My heart hurt at times. I found myself smiling, getting excited, and worried for Damon. The side characters were just as endearing, even the anti-hero Frost (I want to know more of him, but I'm equally intrigued by both Rogers & Byrne).

Without coming off as a fangirl, I will say that years ago I read a ton of UF & PNR, and in recent times I started reading Historical Romance, never combining the two until recently. I've read thousands of books, but when I was asked to read this title for Wicked Reads I was excited, recognizing the title immediately (as I'd been waiting for it).

In a nutshell, I was entertained the entire time. When I finished the novella, my appetite was whetted for the next. Book #1 was a slow build into book #2, which captured me as a reader, and I anxiously await #3.

Recommended: Historical Romance fans | Paranormal Romance Fans | Male/Male Fans |
Heat Level: HOT | explicit | M/M | Orgy |
Would I read more by this author: I look forward to seeing the growth as an author, and will be on the lookout for books to come.
Would I read more of this series: Absolutely. I cannot wait to see the direction the series takes.

The girl hid her smile behind her lace fan. Bedecked in voluminous layers, her eyes were the only feature visible to my sharp vision. She looked at me, fluttering her fan so the white lace vibrated. She snapped her fan shut, opened it and let it lower, baring her neck. Her pulse jumped. She must be interested in someone else, someone near me.

I stepped to the side, pretending interest in the crowd. Many of the men wore steel rapiers, dress versions of their usual weaponry. These rapiers held no power, but a Hunter must not be without his weapon, even if Le Chasseur at Forest Qin subdued rebel vampires. Really, what vampire would be so thick as to enter the Masquerade, when everyone knew it was held by an old Hunter family and attended by the most talented Hunters, both currently and retired from the guild?

A sigh escaped my lips.

The girl moved again to stand across from me. I looked over the crowd, feigning disinterest even though my skin ached for the pulse thrumming under the harlot’s low-cut dress. The dancers surged again, blocking her from my sight. I scurried further down.

Why must she tempt me? And why must I continue to ask myself such stupid questions? Because Alexis was not present himself to torture me himself, of course. Now I must pit myself against my own hunger without the opportunity to even blame him for it. I laughed, an abrasive sound not unlike a dog’s bark. I could always blame him. He made me this way. That selfish, ugly, hideous man.

I leaned against the mirror. If he found out, and I hoped he did, he would scream at me later for embarrassing him. It was a better result than the alternative.

“Good evening. May I be so presumptuous as to introduce myself?” I spun around. She tilted her open fan away from her pursed lips. She looked into my eyes and I could not run away. “I am Mademoiselle Anna de la Merais. And you are?”

“U-uh, Seraphin,” I stuttered.

“U-uh, Seraphin,” she repeated. “With one or two u’s?”

If I could have, I would have coloured.

“I know, it’s difficult to speak after witnessing such an impossibly rude act. I had to do it, though. I just had to meet you, and you ignored my signals.”

“S-signals?”

She snapped her fan closed and then opened it again. In a low and impossibly unladylike voice, she whispered, “Come hither.”

I gulped. She took advantage of my stalled body and stepped closer until her under-dressed cleavage nearly heaved against my chest. The pulse throbbed. It just pulsed there, as wanton as she was. The scent of so much blood running beneath her skin became too much to resist.

Instinctively, my lips pulled back, baring my fangs.

She shrieked, splitting the ubiquitous sound of the fifty-string orchestra, and leaped back. “Oh Le Chasseur! Help me! Somebody help me please! He’s a vampire!”

Byrne dropped his hand. “The physician came today.”

“What did he have to say?” I asked. I made a face. “More leeches?”

I didn’t know how such learned men expected leeches to fix dyspepsia, but I had heard enough from Byrne’s rants that physicians were desperate to use them. And the maggots. Physicians had a fetish for letting bugs eat their patients, apparently. Medical nonsense. It was why I never serviced physicians, however well they paid.

“No. No leeches,” he said. “It’s too late for that.”

“Too late?” I asked. “But you have money.” I had known many people to die young because they could not afford even a surgeon. A real one, who had studied in a university and not the cowherd recently arrived from the country.

“Money doesn’t buy everything,” Byrne said. “It didn’t buy me a family.”

“If you had been as ardent about chasing fillies as you are colts,” I said and shrugged. He’d probably have a whole stable of children by now.

“I don’t care much for fillies,” Byrne said.

“Who does?” I shrugged again. “But that’s how you beget children.”

“I always thought I would have time,” he said.

“You still have time,” I said.

Byrne laughed, which turned into a harsh coughing fit. I rubbed his back through the thin cotton of his night gown.

“Doctor Morson said I wouldn’t last a year. Maybe two,” Byrne said.

“From dyspepsia?” I asked.

Byrne shook his head no. “It’s not dyspepsia.”

Oh. If Byrne didn’t wish to share, then I wouldn’t enquire further. “Well, I knew a boy who got roughed up pretty bad — I mean, I knew a boy who had been gravely injured. His — his abbot was flush enough to summon a surgeon. The surgeon said he wouldn’t last the night.”

“But then the boy lived for fifty years and died a happy old man surrounded by grandchildren,” Byrne finished.

“How many years do you think I have?” I asked. “He did outlive the prognosis, though. He made it a whole week before they called the coffin-maker.”

Byrne laughed again, as if he couldn’t help but laugh instead of cry. Tears ran from the corner of his eyes. He pressed his hand into his side again. “Are you trying to make me feel better or worse?”

“Better,” I said. “If he can live seven times longer, it should be easy for you. You can do a lot in seven years.”

“Not like this,” Byrne said. His hands trembled in his lap.

“It’s a lot of books to read,” I said. I glanced at the god forsaken book on the ground. “Not that one.”

Byrne laughed again. When his coughing fit rescinded, he whispered, “You must endeavour not to make me laugh, or I won’t have a year. It would be worth it, though.”

“Well, then what do you want to do?” I asked. The few people I had known with wasting sicknesses had not been afforded the luxury for such a question, except for something really simple. Apologising to their mother for the life they had lived, for one.

“I want to read something… hopeful,” Byrne said.

“Then the newspaper is out,” I said. “Everyone’s saying the French wars will ruin us.”

“Oh, let the French have Perceval,” Byrne said. “I’ve had three ships go down off the coast of Africa, thanks to his moral idiocy.”

“Yes, terrible that,” I said. “Can you believe him? Actually thinking that men shouldn’t be owned by another? Where is the profit? Well, besides with the former slaves, who would then get a fair wage for their work instead of the whip.”

Byrne sniffed. He looked to the fireplace on the other side of his bedroom. Small flames licked the blackened logs. Perhaps he had realised just how silly it was to complain to a molly about the loss of slave ships. Or perhaps he was just imagining keeping me in a collar, chained to his bed to do whatever he desired. Without pay.

“May I ask you something?” Byrne asked. I shrugged. I hoped it had nothing to do with politics. I cared little for what happened at Westminster, unless it involved a gift of coin and me on my knees. “Are you happy?”

I mouth opened and I almost laughed. “Halfway to the grave,” I said, “and you still find time to mock me.”

“How does that question mock you?” Byrne asked. His forehead furrowed, as if he actually had to think hard on my response.

“No, I am not happy,” I said. “I expect no one really is, not at the bottom of the barrel. Although, I’m not actually at the bottom. That place is reserved for those poor halfwits stuck in St Giles.”

“Damon’s Circles of Hell,” Byrne muttered. “How clever.”

Ruthie☆☆☆
This is a short read which I would surmise is set in early Dickensian London. Poverty and perversity abound in large cities, and Damon is a Molly or rent boy. In order to benefit from a dying client's inheritance he is set some lessons. This book provides the first. That I found quite enjoyable. What I haven't yet understood is what the incubus element that is alluded to within the ‘blurb’ fits into the plot. The next lesson will be in the next release.

Erica☆☆☆☆
4 stars overall
3 stars for the beginning
5 stars for the ending.

I want to preface this review by stating I had a very, very difficult time starting this novella and keeping engaged. It wasn't the genre, as I'm an avid Regency and M/M reader. There was something about the writing style or the execution of the introduction. Why am I stating this? Because if I hadn't had to read this title for reviewing purposes, I would have stopped and went to another book, and that would have been a travesty. So, for those struggling, please keep reading.

Around the 45% mark, I couldn't put the book down. But at the same time, I didn't want it to end. I enjoyed Damon, being inside his head, and I found the rest of the cast of characters very engaging. Byrne was a fantastic character.

One word kept coming to mind as I read the novella: Darling. It was hot and sweet yet realistic, giving you the darker emotional side of being a Molly. I cannot wait for Damon's next lesson.

Above was my review, below is the writer in me wanting to start a dialogue with either the author or other readers, because I love to “Book Club” a book. Meaning I love to discuss it.

Incubus
I have two thoughts rattling in my head about the ‘Incubus’ part of the storyline. For it to be paranormal in nature, then I need more paranormal content. The Incubus part of the storyline was completely glossed over, with little world building or explanation besides a sentence here or there.

Personally, I was glad. I didn't think it was necessary. I would have liked the story just fine without it. What I believe, if I were writing this title, is Damon isn't an incubus at all. He was born into a world where that was a great excuse to explain away the mother's indiscretions, and then he suffered the consequences. It's also the only way he could deal with the emotional fallout of having a father who never claimed him, a mother who blamed him, and a way to deal with being a Molly. Just blame all that emotion on being an Incubus. It's a childhood delusion that manifested into a very real belief for our hero. (I could be wrong. Probably am. But as I said, this was my ‘book club’ portion)

Would I recommend this title: Yes, but soldier through the beginning.
Will I continue this series: Yes, can't wait to see what adventures Byrne thrusts Damon into for the sake of ‘journaling.’
Would I read more by this author: Most definitely.
