Never Look Back by Mary Burton

Expect the unexpected in this gritty, tense, and page-turning mystery from New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton.

After multiple women go missing, Agent Melina Shepard of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation makes the impulsive decision to go undercover as a prostitute. While working the street, she narrowly avoids becoming a serial killer’s latest victim; as much as it pains her to admit, she needs backup.

Enter lone wolf FBI agent Jerrod Ramsey. Stonewalled by a lack of leads, he and Melina investigate a scene where a little girl has been found abandoned in a crashed vehicle. They open the trunk to reveal a horror show and quickly realize they’re dealing with two serial killers with very different MOs. The whole situation brings back memories for Melina—why does this particular case feel so connected to her painful past?

Before time runs out, Melina must catch not one but two serial killers, both ready to claim another victim—and both with their sights set on her.

Melina Shepard loves her job. She has always known that she wants to be in law enforcement. Her childhood started out rocky, but she ended up with an amazing family. When a case baffles the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Melina decides to go undercover to try and figure out who is kidnapping and killing local woman. She's tenacious, smart, and cunning.

Jerrod Ramsey is on the hunt for a killer that nobody seems to know. When he runs into Melina and sees that their cases might be aligned, he offers his assistance. He wants to find the person behind his string of cases too.

As Ramsey and Shepard hunt for their two killers, can they truly see what's right in front of them? What is it about them? What is it about these killers? And the biggest question of all – how is Melina's past intertwined?

I absolutely couldn't put this book down. It kept me guessing, turning the pages well into the wee hours of the morning. It's fast-paced and very entertaining. I really enjoyed this.

I See You by Mary Burton Blog Tour

From New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton comes a gritty, suspenseful story in the Criminal Profiler series.

FBI special agent Zoe Spencer uses skeletal remains to recreate the faces of murder victims through sculpture. Though highly scientific, the process is also sensitive and intimate; she becomes attached to the individuals she identifies, desperate to find justice for each.

As Zoe examines old remains, she sees a teenage girl looking back at her—the victim in a cold case from over a decade ago. Zoe wants nothing more than to tell this young woman’s story and to bring her killer to justice.

Zoe’s case leads her to the victim’s hometown and to homicide detective William Vaughan, Zoe’s on-again, off-again lover. As the two become more involved in the case, they quickly realize that it isn’t as cold as they first believed: someone’s still out there hunting women. And with more women gone missing, time’s running out. Can they work together and stop this madman before he kills again?

An Affair (and a Murder) To Remember with Author Mary Burton

I See You, my latest romantic suspense, features two of my very favorite characters: Homicide Detective William Vaughan and FBI Special Agent Zoe Spencer.

Zoe Spencer is a member of an FBI criminal profiling team dedicated to finding the most violent and prolific killers. Zoe, a talented artist and agent, specializes in forensic reconstruction. She skillfully merges her interview skills with pencil and paper to create stunning likenesses. And when only bones remain, she molds clay over bone to recreate the faces of the lost.

Zoe’s work generates a high case-closure rate, which draws the attention of the law enforcement community. Her lectures at the FBI headquarters at Quantico are often standing room only. Among those interested in her work is Homicide Detective William Vaughan.

Detective Vaughan, divorced and raising a college bound teenager, is a man of few words and when he does comment, his observations are always thoughtful and insightful. He not only hears what is said and but sees what is communicated via body language.

The more time Vaughan spends with Zoe, the greater his desire to breach her cool demeanor. He draws upon all his powers of observation, practiced detective skills and his somewhat rusty charm to win her. Though they begin an affair, she still remains elusive.

When a charred skull is found in Vaughan’s jurisdiction of Alexandria, Virginia, he turns to Zoe. Zoe recreates a stunning clay bust that leads to the identification of a girl who has been missing for fifteen years.

As Vaughan and Zoe dig deeper, the cold case heats up when several more women, similar to their victim, are discovered brutally murdered. This killer, who has avoided capture for so many years, is still hunting women. It becomes a race against time to catch a madman who shifts his sights to his next victim: Zoe Spencer.

I hope you enjoy I See You and this magnetic couple who I’ve pitted against one of my most chilling villains so far.

This is the second book in the series – I have not read the previous book, but had no trouble being fully engaged with this story.

This is a clever, complex murder mystery, which unfolds in time sequenced chapters. There are twists and turns and we are given so many versions of what happened, that it is intriguing to find out just what really happened. I felt the level of tension was maintained without it being too intense. We get to meet a wide law enforcement team, but mostly spend time with Zoe Spencer and William Vaughan. They had met before at a profiler course she was leading, and had been strongly attracted to each other.

The relationship between the two is examined in a few scenes, and as they worked the case, they came to some realisations of their own about how they felt about each other. Zoe in particular, having suffered becoming a widow at a young age, needed to find herself before considering starting again, but by the end of the book, she has a clearer view.

I enjoyed how there were many weird clues which made no sense and as we got another version, seemed even more off – it raised the stakes of the possible perpetrators' motive, actions, and essentially, their version of reality. I shall definitely look out for the next one in the series.

Zoe and Vaughn are brought together by an old cold case. Zoe is amazing with facial reconstruction and when an old cold case is brought new life by her identifying the remains, we are left tracking down who could have done it – looking at both motive and guilt of everyone involved.

While I liked the mystery aspect, the romance left a little to be desired. Neither character really seemed ready for a full relationship and it felt very flat. I did think that they made good police partners, but not romantic partners.

This mystery is full of twists and turns that keep you guessing. There is pertinent information buried in the misdirection of the story and I liked how I kept having to go back and rethink the mystery.

Overall, this was entertaining, but lacked the relationship component that was supposed to be there.

The instant Vaughan woke, he knew she was gone. He should not have been surprised. She never stayed long, but he’d thought last night would be different.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed and instantly spotted the note on the mirror. It was written on the back of the fast-food receipt in fluid and graceful handwriting.

Called a car. Didn’t want to wake you.

Spencer. He knew how to make that woman’s body tighten with desire and how to make her moan in a way that told him she was fully attuned to his body. But beyond that, she was still a complete stranger.

He flicked the edge of the note, surprised he had not awoken. Since he had become a cop and father, he had turned into a light sleeper. Both incarnations, like a doctor on call, were summoned at all times of the day and night. His ability to shake off sleep in seconds and then think clearly was well honed. But yesterday had been long, even for him.

He laid the note on his dresser as he glanced at the pillow that still held the impression of her head. It was not like him to be sentimental, but he was sorry he likely would not see her for a while.

He showered, and fifteen minutes later he was dressed, his badge and sidearm on his belt. As the coffee brewed, he scrambled five eggs before he realized Nate was gone. He toasted a bagel and ate alone at the kitchen table.

He filled a travel mug with more coffee and was on the road by six o’clock. Moonlight mingled with the lights looming over I-395 as he looped around the beltway and headed north toward his exit. The traffic was already building, and soon it would slow to a snail’s pace.

With luck, the first wave of files from the Prince case would be in his office. He had been warned that there were a dozen file boxes, but he did not care. He also had the autopsy of the Jane Doe stabbed to death in the motel room to attend. It was going to be another long day.

Fifteen minutes later, he had parked and was in the break room, refilling his coffee. When he flipped on the lights of his office, there were six file boxes stacked in front of his desk. A green sticky note read More to come.

It was too early to call the medical examiner about his Jane Doe from the motel room, so he set his cup down and flipped through the first set of files.

He spent the next hour and a half reading through the detectives’ notes. At the time of Marsha’s disappearance, the detectives had exhausted every lead and tip that had come into the station, but in the end came up with nothing.

Profiling FBI Profiler Macy Crow

Special Agent Macy Crow is 33-years-old and is an accomplished FBI Agent. She’s worked a series of high profile cases across the United States and isn’t afraid to take chances. When her father was murdered, she headed to Texas to investigate the crime. Following clues left behind by her father, she was closing in on the killer when she became the victim of a hit and run accident.

Most would have died from the injuries Macy sustained or would have been permanently disabled. However, Macy channeled her extreme ability to focus into her recovery. Though her fit muscles have softened during her recovery, she is regaining strength each day and is now laser-focused on returning to the FBI as a field agent. Before her accident, she had shoulder length blond hair but the brain surgeons who saved her life cut off all her hair. She now proudly sports a pixie cut.

When Macy returned to Texas, she learned a startling fact about herself. She has an identical twin—medical examiner Dr. Faith McIntyre. Though adopted by different families, the sisters already have a strong connection.

Macy’s adoptive parents split when she was two and she moved from Texas to Alexandria, Virginia located outside of Washington, D.C. Over the years she remained close with her father and spent many summers with him helping repair old cars on his auto salvage lot. In Alexandria, she and her mother lived in a large apartment complex. When she was young, a neighborhood girl was murdered. That tragedy had a very profound affect on Macy, who discovered she wasn’t afraid of the police and FBI agents swarming the apartment complex. Instead, she was fascinated by their work and not only watched law enforcement in action but also walked the actual crime scene herself in search of clues.

Macy has never been married and has no children. For a long time, she considered herself married to her job and it wasn’t until she met FBI Special Agent Mike Nevada that she reconsidered her single status. However, her accident cut short their romance. Nevada is now the sheriff in a small Virginia town in the Shenandoah Valley. He understands Macy’s need to reclaim the FBI job she has always loved so much. In the last year, he has never forgotten her and is committed to helping regain her old life. When the two are paired on a cold case murder investigation in Nevada’s district, they become an unstoppable team.

Macy is at it again. This is a fast-paced read with a chilling trail of bodies that Macy has to follow.

Mike is the new sheriff and he has big shoes to fill. But what won him the spot was the fact that the previous sheriff was a "good ole' boy" who was more worried about keeping the people he lived around happy than solving crimes. He grew too complacent and when Mike saw the mess that the DNA testing kits were in, he knew he had to step up and get things done.

This is a town where nothing ever happens. It's quiet, almost sleepy. But when bones are found, it starts down a path where Macy and Mike will have to follow. There are people who prejudge and people who just want to bury their heads and believe that nothing bad can ever happen.

I really enjoyed how this book played out. There was a decent storyline when it came to Macy and Mike, although I thought that they lacked some chemistry. But since they had some history, that helped. Overall, this is a fantastic start to a new series and I can't wait for more.

This is an excellent story about an injured FBI investigator who is desperately trying to get back into the field after she was the victim of a hit and run accident that almost killed her. Macy Crow is good at her job and she refuses to let her injury make her less so. When an opportunity comes along to rejoin a task force, even on a trial basis, she jumps at the chance. Even if it puts her in Mike Nevada's path.

Sheriff Mike Nevada is a former FBI agent who left the agency to become sheriff in his hometown. When bones of a long dead missing teenager are found, and the DNA matches that of a unknown rapist, he knows he needs a lot more help than what his small department can offer.

Mike has been worried about Macy since the accident and having her in town is a boon he can't resist. He knows Macy and knows that she is an excellent agent and he has no doubt that she can help him solve the mystery of who's behind the murders. And he's hopeful that he can persuade her to give their romance another go.

I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the girls around the area.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
Hide and Seek is the first book in Mary Burton’s new Criminal Profiler series. FBI Agent Macy Crow has appeared in a previous book by Burton but you do not have to have read it to read this series. Macy is recovering from injuries sustained in a hit and run and wants to join the profiler team. She is sent to a small town where Sheriff Nevada, previously her lover, is investigating the recently discovered remains of missing teen, which appears to be connected to the rapes of three teenagers in the same year.

This story is told from multiple points of view including that of the killer. I actually found the killer’s point of view quite creepy. Seeing him stalk and attack these teenagers and knowing he has been getting away with it for so long was disconcerting because he made it look easy.

It was absorbing reading Macy and Nevada’s methodical hunt for the killer, connecting the dots. Seeing various crimes of the past being connected so many years later because the sheriff at the time didn’t do his job properly had my blood boiling, although it helped knowing Macy would likely catch the killer. There are different suspects and a bit of misdirection that kept me on my toes but when the killer’s identity is revealed it is expected.

I’m a big fan of romantic suspense stories and Mary Burton can always be counted on to provide a good, engaging story. In this case, the romance plays a minor role, but I get the feeling we will see more of it in future stories. I thoroughly enjoyed Hide and Seek and I look forward to reading more of this series.

Sarah☆☆☆☆☆
Mary Burton never disappoints but this might be my favourite of her books yet. I loved Macy Crow when we first met her in Cut and Run and she’s even more compelling in this story. Desperate to earn a place on an FBI profiling team, Macy returns to work while she’s still healing from her accident. Called to investigate a murder in a small town, Macy works with local law enforcement to uncover twenty-year-old secrets.

Macy is fierce, independent, and oddly likeable. Macy isn’t quite as hard as she was at the start of Cut and Run and her new vulnerabilities bother her more than she’s willing to admit. I loved the contrasts in Macy. Just beneath her tough persona is a woman full of self-doubt. Her relationship with Sheriff Nevada, a former lover, is complicated by the fact that after her accident, Macy isn’t quite as content with her nomadic lifestyle and convenient hook-ups. I love Macy’s brain and I enjoyed solving the crimes alongside her.

I really enjoyed the way this story digs into small town secrets and the relationships between the small town characters. As an outsider, Macy observes and questions but can never seem to get close enough to the killer. In contrast, the local law enforcement officers are too close to the crimes to maintain objectivity. The result is a complicated, challenging, and fast-paced murder mystery.

I feel like the romance is the weakest part of this book. I don’t mind because the murder mystery stands on its own easily and I love the characters. But Nevada and Macy’s relationship is a little bit too messy for an easy happily ever after and Macy is at her best when she’s a tough, independent hero. I feel like the romance aspect of this story compromises some of Macy’s identity. I actually found the platonic relationship between Macy and Brooke more interesting and I loved the interactions between the two women.

One little moan – this is marketed as the first book in a new series, but it is a direct sequel to Cut and Run. Any reader wanting to understand Macy will need to have read Cut and Run first. Once again, it really annoys me when authors and publishers don’t make the connections between series clear to readers.

Vivid blue sky, white clouds, and golden fall leaves blanketed the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains and created a picture-perfect day in the valley. In Macy’s book, the beauty was wasted. If she had God’s ear, today would have been cold, overcast, and damp. Save the pretty days until she caught this killer.

As she drove south down I-81, Macy mentally replayed her ten minutes of regional research. In the last couple of decades, the Shenandoah Valley’s population had ballooned thanks to a growing university, its proximity to Washington, DC, and a thriving tourism trade peddling vineyards, Civil War battlefields, and railroad museums. Filling in the economic gaps were warehouse distribution centers, chain hotels, and strip malls.

The voice of Macy’s GPS cut through AC/DC’s Back in Black blasting from her playlist and instructed her to take the upcoming exit toward Deep Run. As she rolled onto Route 250, a sign for her go-to fast-food eatery gave her an excuse to stretch her legs before driving the remaining ten miles to the crime scene.

Parking, she gingerly rose up out of the car. Her leg hurt. Stretches weren’t optional any more. She grabbed her ankle and pulled until the bunched muscles in her thigh released. After a quick walk around the lot, she made a beeline for the restaurant bathroom.

She glanced into the mirror as she washed her hands. Even after five months, she still didn’t recognize the woman with the short hair and thin face.

Nevada was in for a rude awakening.

She wiped her face with a paper towel. “Macy Crow, you’re above ground and headed in the right direction. That’s what counts.”

At the counter, she ordered a supersize bucket of fries and a large soda. It wasn’t that she loved the food—okay, maybe she did love the fries—but the chain restaurant’s predictability and sameness was comforting after so many life changes.

A few fries later, she was in her car and backing out of her space when her phone rang. Nevada’s number appeared. She cleared her throat and sat a little taller.

“Agent Macy Crow,” she said.

“Ramsey tells me you’re on your way. Where are you?”

He was direct, rarely charming, and she always knew where she stood with him. “Fifteen minutes from the barn.”

“I’m here now.”

The transition back into a working relationship appeared effortless. Whatever they had was over and done. No hard feelings.

“See you soon,” she said.

En route on the interstate, she ate her fries and drained her soda. There were no guarantees on when the next meal would be.

The last few miles took her down smaller roads until she spotted the driveway marked by stacked stones. Gravel crunched under her tires as she passed a freshly cleared field. Over the rise of a hill, she saw the old barn encircled by yellow crime scene tape.

When she had been researching the area, slogans such as “Best Quality of Life” and “Raise Your Family in Deep Run” popped up on her computer screen. As she had read about the area, she had kept glancing toward her open case file filled with images of Tobi Turner’s scattered bones. Recent pictures had captured the barn surrounded by dozens of state and local law enforcement vehicles crammed side by side in the grassy field.

Now as Macy parked, she noted that all the vehicles were gone expect for a lone black SUV. She grabbed her Glock from the glove box, holstered it, and stepped out of her car. Her worn hiking boots sloshed in the damp muddy soil. She tugged on an FBI windbreaker and draped her FBI credentials around her neck. As a stiff breeze blew a lingering chill and autumn scents, she checked her pockets for latex gloves, sunglasses, a small pocketknife, and pendant light.

Edginess and excitement fused as she strode toward the stretch of yellow tape and searched for Nevada. She ducked under the tape and stepped inside the barn.

Cut and Run by Mary Burton

Twin sisters separated by the past are reunited by unspeakable crimes in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s throat-clutching novel of suspense…

Trauma victims are not new to medical examiner Faith McIntyre, but this one is different. The unconscious woman clinging to life after a hit and run is FBI agent Macy Crow. What the woman from Quantico was doing in a dark alley after midnight is just one mystery. The other is more unsettling: Macy is Faith’s mirror image—the twin sister she never knew she had.

Faith knew that she was adopted, but now she’s finding that her childhood concealed other secrets. Following the trail of clues Macy left behind, Faith and Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden make a shocking discovery on an isolated country ranch—a burial ground for three women who disappeared thirty years before.

They weren’t the only victims in a killer’s twisted plot. And they won’t be the last.

As the missing pieces of Faith’s and Macy’s dark lives snap into place, Faith is becoming more terrified by what she sees—and by what she must do to save her sister and herself from the past.

This is a great thriller. It's fast paced and there is a lot to this storyline.

Faith and Mitchell Hayden (Hayden) have a secret thing going, but when it becomes apparent that Faith might be in danger, Hayden will do everything in his power to make sure that she remains safe.

Macy Crow is an FBI agent who has come home to identify her father. With the distance in their relationship, Macy hasn't been home in quite a while, but as soon as she steps foot back near her dad's junk yard, she knows that he has left clues for her to follow.

This is a story with a twisted trail of clues and everyone is racing the clock to figure them out. Without revealing too much of the story, let me just say that while you'll guess for a lot of the story, once it's revealed, there is still a lot to the story. I enjoyed the twists and turns, and the dialogue was well developed too.

I loved this story and really liked how the relationship didn't take over. It was a thriller that stayed a thriller. Can't wait to read more of Burton's stuff!

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
When I started this book, I didn't know what to think. The story starts out going in one direction and then does a 180-degree turn.

The story only gets better from there.

Faith McIntyre is a medical examiner and just started something with Mitchell Hayden, a Texas Ranger. Both are not looking for a relationship and what happened was just something that happened. Until it keeps happening.

The romance is the side story in this book, finding out who is Faith's biological parents quickly becomes the focus as the people who have information about her birth are quickly dying around her.

Hayden isn't really ready for a new relationship after having lost his wife four years ago to cancer. But there's something about Faith that calls to him. When her life is in danger, his protectiveness overwhelms him and he starts thinking "What if?" and more importantly "Can there be more?"

Be prepared to stay up all night reading because it’s not a book you will want to put down once you start.

Veronica☆☆☆☆
The murder of 60-something junkyard owner Jack Crow leads to the discovery of graves, missing girls, and crimes that go back to the 80s. It felt like something out of an episode of Criminal Minds, which is one of my favourite shows.

Dr. Faith McIntyre, medical examiner, and Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden, who are investigating this case, also provide the romance which is subtly woven into the story. We are also given the point of view of Macy Crow, Jack Crow’s daughter and FBI agent, the killer, and a girl currently being held captive.

Cut and Run is an excellent crime thriller. There is a good, steady pace to this story and even though I was getting excited wanting to rush to the end so that I knew what was going on, the story kept the same steady rhythm, slowly revealing each clue and twist to the story, making it last which made it even better. Cut and Run gets a solid four stars from me.

Sarah☆☆☆☆☆
I love the suspense in this book. The story starts with seemingly unrelated characters, histories, and fragments of the present. Slowly, the investigators start to discover the connections between the characters and past and present crimes. I love that there are enough clues for readers to solve this alongside Faith, Mitchell, and Macy.

This is a chilling and often gory thriller. The book is marketed as romantic suspense but it’s light on romance and heavy on gruesome details and grisly murders. I loved the story, but pure romance readers might want to look elsewhere. The characters are brilliant. Medical examiner Faith is a wonderfully strong female lead and FBI agent Macy is fearless. Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden is as swoon worthy as he is clever and committed.

This is an entertaining read but I’m not sure it wins points for realism. Medical ethics boards would certainly frown on Faith’s continued involvement in the case once it becomes personal and I’m not sure the FBI would allow an agent to investigate her own father’s death. Roles are a bit blurred in this story and while the mix of personal and professional is exciting, it isn’t terribly realistic.

Mary Burton is becoming an auto-request author for me. I really enjoy her stories and I love her characters. The Texas setting of this book is brilliant and I love the author’s observations and reflections.

An unsolved crime pits a desperate woman against a relentless killer in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s heart-stopping novel of psychological suspense…

Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina’s screams. Sarah☆☆☆☆
This is another terrifying tale from Mary Burton. When Virginia police detective John Adler discovers the connections between a recent gruesome murder and a fourteen-year-old cold case, he must solve both murders before more of the victims’ friends die.

As always with Mary Burton’s books, the characters are well crafted, the murder scenes are graphic, and the relationships between victims and suspects are complicated. Adler and his partner, Quinn, are engaging detectives and I liked that I continued to suspect almost every other character until the very end. As for the whodunnit, I almost guessed part of it – but the other part seemed to come out of nowhere.

I didn’t love the way the story flipped back and forth in time and back and forth between characters and perspectives. While the disjointed structure did add suspense, it was also crazy confusing at times. I liked the date stamp at the start of each chapter, but I couldn’t always remember previous date stamps and it took me a couple of pages of each chapter to figure out whose perspective we were getting.

I really enjoy each new Mary Burton story. I like the way they are all set in the same time and place, so we get glimpses of previous characters and a wider understanding of Virginia law enforcement. I love the way Mary Burton writes the professional women in her story – I just sometimes wish that every book wasn’t full of young female corpses.

The Last Move by Mary Burton

In this gripping stand-alone from bestselling author Mary Burton, an FBI agent must catch a copycat killer. The only difference this time: she’s the final victim.

Catching monsters helps FBI agent Kate Hayden keep her nightmares at bay. Now an urgent call brings her back to San Antonio, the scene of her violent past. A brutal new murder shows hallmarks of a serial killer nicknamed the Samaritan. Tricky part is, Kate already caught him.

Either Kate made a deadly error, or she’s got a copycat on her hands. Paired with homicide detective Theo Mazur, she quickly realizes this murder is more twisted than it first appeared. Then a second body is found, the mode of death identical to a different case that Kate thought she’d put behind her.

Now Kate and Detective Mazur aren’t just working a homicide; the investigative pair is facing a formidable enemy who knows Kate intimately. While Mazur is personally trying to protect Kate, the closer they are drawn to the killer, the clearer it becomes that in this terrifying game, there is only one rule: don’t believe everything you see…

Kate Hayden is a linguistic FBI agent. She is amazing at her job and has caught a lot of bad people. However, she is still slightly haunted by the fact that she was a victim early on in life. She was stalked, harassed, and traumatized when someone in her life turned out to be a psychopath. When she finds herself hunting someone who is hurting women, she can't help but identify with the victims. She is tough, smart, and slightly closed off, but she gets the job done.

Theo Mazur is trying to be a good father to his teenage daughter. He has picked up and moved in order to be near her. His ex-wife is selfish and I really have a difficult time understanding how he was ever with someone who is such a shrew to both him and their daughter. When he is paired up with Agent Hayden, he sees what she's trying to hide, but also sees that when she lets her guard down, she's genuine and caring.

These two hunt for the bad guys and what they discover is that sometimes, if you let it, the good guys can win. I really enjoyed their banter and their relationship was very organic. I can't wait to see if they get more.

This is yet another thriller from Mary Burton that I couldn’t put down until I finished it. And once again, I couldn’t quite put all the ‘whodunnit’ pieces together until the very tense final scenes.

Kate Hayden is wonderful as the FBI agent chasing a killer who is replicating murders she already solved. Her partner, recently transplanted homicide detective Theo Mazur is equally compelling as a recently divorced single dad trying hard to work with his new department. I loved the energy between these two – their personal lives quickly become as interesting as their investigation. I love the strong women in Mary Burton’s thrillers and Kate Hayden might be my favourite character yet.

The actual investigation had my attention from the start. I loved the twists, turns, and complications. The victims and the suspects are interesting and I think I suspected everyone at one point. As always, the pacing of this story is brilliant. It starts out tense and just gets more exciting.

I can’t praise Mary Burton’s murder mysteries highly enough. She’s currently my favourite crime/thriller writer and I look forward to each new book she writes.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelist Mary Burton is the highly praised author of twenty-six romance and suspense novels and five novellas. She lives in Virginia with her husband and three miniature dachshunds.
