Barreled Over by Jenna Sutton

Ready for another round?

Ava Grace Landy’s music career is humming along until a shakeup at her label jeopardizes her recording contract and curses her with the world’s worst boss. Determined to satisfy him, she partners with Trinity Distillery to access a larger male audience. To her surprise, she’s the one who’s satisfied—by none other than Jonah Beck, the gorgeous, yet gruff man behind the bourbon.

No doubt about it, bourbon runs in Beck’s blood. But it’s audacious Ava Grace who makes it run hot. When she signs on as the spokesperson for his craft distillery, he doesn’t plan on hoisting her onto an oak barrel and rocking the rickhouse. Though he’s convinced their lives don’t mix—like a terrible cocktail—he can’t keep his hands off the alluring country star.

Ava Grace and Beck try to keep their intoxicating relationship private, but the glare of her fame is too bright, revealing secrets they both want to remain hidden. With a spotlight shining on his tumultuous past, their future is at risk. Now they must decide if being together is worth sacrificing the career she loves and the company he’s poured his heart and soul into.

4.5 stars and a great start to what promises to be a great new series.

I really enjoyed the love story in this book; it is fun, sexy, and brings out the best in both Ava and Jonah. The road is not smooth, the chemistry is fabulous, and the outcome is perfect.

But, add to that a whole range of fantastic side plots and issues, and this is a really, really good read. From the blatant sexism and unnecessary putdowns that Ava suffers from her new record label contract, to the press and fans' intrusion into her life, to the quiet, reserved Beck and how he has to come to terms with success and publicity after the difficulties of his youth. Not forgetting Beck's partners and Ava's best friend, and all that they do to influence and 'help' the couple along... oh, and then I also learned so much about bourbon, and how to cook with it.

A truly wonderful read, and I cannot wait until the next one in the series comes out!

Sarah☆☆☆☆
Country music and bourbon are a perfect fit and while it takes them a while to figure things out, so are Ava Grace and Beck. This is a sweet and funny romance that mostly takes place in a bourbon distillery.

I have to admit that it took me some time to warm to Ava Grace. At the start, she’s a little bit superficial, a little too flirtatious, and a little too entitled. But she’s more than she seems. She seems to let go of her diva affectations as she gets more real with Beck – and once she stopped with the ridiculous outfits, I quite enjoyed her as a character.

Beck is focused, determined, and his past has made him skittish about family and commitment. He is immediately likeable, but some of the early conflict with Ava Grace felt contrived and a little bit formulaic. But the friction leads to chemistry and there are some very hot scenes in this story!

There are some brilliant moments in this story – the splinters in Ava Grace’s arse after a hot and heavy session among the whiskey barrels were a highlight – but I felt like the pacing dragged some at the end. Ultimately, this is frothy, fun entertainment with a few darker moments that make Beck and Ava Grace human and relatable.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
Sparks fly between Ava Grace and Jonah from the first time they met and now, they are off the charts. However, Jonah is reluctant to get involved with Ava Grace because of the media circus that follows her everywhere. He's not had a good relationship with the press in the past, and he doesn't want to take chances with the future of his bourbon company now.

Ava Grace has learned to live with the media, of knowing when to make nice and smile for the camera. It’s just all in a day's work for her, part of the package of being a country music star. She doesn't enjoy all of the invasions of her privacy, but it’s a small price to pay to be able to sing the music that has made her a millionaire many times over.

Never has it been more of a problem than now: She wants a relationship with Jonah, but understands how the past still colors his future. Wanting to do everything she can to minimize his exposure to her world, she does just that. She stays with him in his world, and life has never been sweeter.

What does cause problems are issues with her father, when he becomes violent due to his advanced Alzheimer's and people believe that Jonah is the cause. Knowing the hurt that has been done to him the past, she doesn't blame him for leaving her and breaking her heart.

Even knowing that limelight is far from where he wants to be, Jonah knows that in order to be happy he has to give Ava Grace the keys to his heart.

Garrett picked up his fork, but instead of eating off his own plate, he stabbed a piece of chicken off hers. As he brought it to his mouth, she kicked him under the table, not hard, just a tap.

“If you wanted chicken tagine,” she groused, “you should have ordered it.”

Although his mouth was busy chewing, she could tell he wanted to smile. This was their old routine—him eating off her plate, her chastising him, and him offering little tidbits of his meal to repay her.

Switching his fork for a spoon, he scooped some stew from the orange bowl in front of him and held it up to her mouth. She opened with no hesitation, the whole situation as comfortable and familiar as her favorite flannel nightgown.

He spooned the food into her mouth. As she chewed the flavorful combination of tender beef, kalamata olives, raisins, and garbanzo beans, she got hints of cinnamon and cumin and a little kick of lemon.

“Oh, that’s good,” she murmured, licking her lips. “Give me another bite.”

He didn’t give her what she wanted. Instead, his eyes dropped to her mouth and stayed there for several heartbeats. She watched as his pupils expanded and his irises darkened from bright turquoise to deep teal.

She had seen that look in his eyes before, but she hadn’t recognized it for what it was. She did now.

Suddenly the situation was no longer comfortable. And neither was the ache between her thighs. Feeling a syrupy trickle of arousal into her panties, she silently cursed herself and shifted on the banquette seat.

She’d known it would be impossible for them to go back to the way things used to be. They had opened Pandora’s Box that night. Or, to be more accurate, they had opened Phoebe’s box.

They’d released a powerful force into their friendship—desire. And that desire simmered beneath the surface like a dormant volcano just waiting to erupt.

This book is about second chances and what you do with them.

Phoebe is a survivor. A survivor who is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Being a survivor of breast cancer takes living to a whole new level. One day at a time, with a rock hanging over your head. You can't forget and you can't stop worrying when it will return.

Phoebe has learned to live with her new reality. Except is she really living? She walked away from her friendship with Garret after their one night stand after her diagnosis. Who knew she would find him again in San Francisco?

Garrett has kept Phoebe in the back of his mind, and in his heart, since she disappeared from his bed that fateful night three years ago. She wouldn't return his calls or texts. When he finds her again, he doesn't want to let her go.

But all of his love can't make Phoebe change her mind, it will take fate to do that for her.

This is one of a series – and I have just read A Kick in the Pants, which I really enjoyed, so very happily dived straight into this one! It follows on from that book, so I was very happy to immerse myself back into the world of Riley O'Brien & Co.

Phoebe has a huge secret (a tiny hint was in the previous book, for the very keen reader) which has made her very careful and slightly standoffish. She believes it to be for the best. When she finds the one man she ever cared about at Kyla and Jake's New Year's Eve party, she wishes she had a more positive view on her future. Garrett cannot believe that the 'one who got away' is at the party, and has to know what happened all those years ago. As we get both points of view, we can only sit back and watch, and hope that good sense, and an excellent plot will resolve this dilemma for two people who are clearly mad about each other. Again, as in the previous book there are some key characters who make all the difference to the outcome.

This is a really moving story, which definitely made me think, and wonder at how I would behave in those circumstances. I loved the twist and the resolution, and will be looking out for more installments of this most enjoyable series.

I just love the Riley O'Brien & Co. series and this installment is not a disappointment.

Both Kyla and Jake work at Rileys and each are harboring a secret crush on the other. Jake is Kyla's boss, at least for the next few weeks, so Kyla is off-limits to him. While he's physically able to keep his hands to himself, his heart and mind don't have the same rigid protocol.

Kyla is really intrigued by Jake. He's a good guy and wouldn't be averse to dating him, if he wasn't her boss; however, he hadn't even given her any hint that he's even remotely interested in her. If only.

This is a solid read and I devoured it in one afternoon. I honestly can't wait for the next installment in this series.

This is my first venture into the world of Riley O'Brien & Co., but I am now keen to go back and catch up on previous stories. I am sure that there were references which would have then made more sense, but I really enjoyed it as a standalone.

The premise of the book is really fun – boss and intern both hot for each other, and waiting for the day that work relationship ends and possibly another one can begin. We get the benefit of knowing both their points of view, which had me both engaged and worried, as events unfolded and past issues were revealed. The side characters were key in the story, and ensured that the plot moved along at a good pace. I was happy with the outcome and was pleased to know that future installments might give us updates on their progress together.

For a sweet, fun, and enjoyable romance, this hits the mark.

I’m a big fan of the Riley O'Brien & Co. series and Sutton’s writing. As the fifth installment in the series, and the second novella, the author has proven to be a guaranteed source of romances that are both steamy and heartwarming, at least for me she has. What I’ve enjoyed about this series is that while the various O’Brien siblings make appearances in each of the books, both the full-length novels and the novellas are written in such a way that you don’t have to read them in order. This is particularly helpful for someone like myself who averages a book a day, as it means that I don’t have to backtrack and re-read the previous books before enjoying the latest release.

A Kick in the Pants was a lot of fun for me. I have to admire the professionalism and restraint that Jake and Kyla exercised in regards to their attraction to one another. So often in romances, the couple ignores company policy, embarking upon a romantic and/or sexual relationship that is completely prohibited, either thumbing their noses at the rules or hoping that it will all work out in the end – which it usually does. This is not to say that I don’t enjoy that theme, but rather that I appreciated that the author approached Jake and Kyla’s situation from a different angle. Kyla’s current rotation in the management trainee program has her working in the finance department and, at least part of the time, answering to Jake, and she has hidden her attraction to him as much as possible. Jake has done the same – hidden his attraction for Kyla. In fact, they’ve both done such a good job at maintaining their professional facade, that neither realizes their attraction is mutual and that they’re both counting down the days until the program is over. It’s actually quite cute how enamored they are with one another, yet completely oblivious to the other’s feelings toward them. Not surprisingly, when the program is over, they gravitate toward one another and, in a rather amusing scene, they embark on a personal relationship, sealing it with a kiss.

Because A Kick in the Pants is a novella of just around a hundred pages, the author has to accomplish a lot of relationship development in a limited number of pages. Sutton avoids the insta-love feel by the very thing that has kept both Jake and Kyla from dating – a close working relationship. Through the course of their employment, the two have gotten to know one another and have a good feel for each other’s character. So when they finally were able to start something, it felt realistic and was believable that things progressed as quickly as they did, especially in light of the competition (lol). Of course, there are the requisite minor obstacles and major roadblock that the couple must overcome, and while the limited page count means that an appropriate detour is found around the roadblock almost too quickly, it also kept the drama from being drug out over dozens of pages, so I’m more than happy with that compromise. I was very pleased with the inclusion of the epilogue and its events, and can only hope that future installments provide an occasional peek into Kyla and Jake’s lives so I can catch up with them. Now I’m off to read the next novella in the series, Will Never Fade.

Chaste. Untouched. Maiden. Pure. Innocent. The words that described a virgin might sound pretty, but the truth was downright ugly, at least in Bebe Banerjee’s opinion. She was convinced her virginity was the reason her heart raced, her breath seized, and her palms sweated whenever she was near Cal O’Brien.

Bebe surreptitiously studied Cal, trying to ignore the wave of lust that surged over her. If she’d had some experience between the sheets, she was sure she’d be able to handle the way he made her feel.

If she had gotten naked with a few guys, maybe she wouldn’t obsess about his glacier-blue eyes and his thick, dark hair. Maybe she wouldn’t notice the way his jeans clung to his tight behind and long legs. Maybe she wouldn’t fantasize about his lips, his smile, his big hands...

Bebe desperately wished she could just avoid him, but his little sister, Teagan, was her best friend. If she wanted to spend time with Teagan, she had to put up with Cal. She said no to a lot of Teagan’s invitations to hang out because of him, and she had to be very careful not to offend her best friend.

That was why the object of her X-rated fantasies stood next to her in a club-level suite at PacBell Park. The San Francisco Giants were in the playoffs, battling against the Atlanta Braves to win the National League pennant, and Teagan had invited her to attend the game in the Riley O’Brien & Co. suite.

Founded by Teagan’s great-great-grandfather, Riley O’Brien & Co. was the nation’s oldest designer and manufacturer of blue jeans. Americans had worn Rileys for nearly two centuries. In fact, Bebe was wearing a pair right now.

Teagan and her brothers were involved in the day-to-day operations of Riley O’Brien & Co. She managed the company’s law department, while her oldest brother, Quinn, served as president and CEO, and Cal handled global marketing and communications. Even Quinn’s wife, Amelia, was involved in the company, heading up the women’s division.

Beside her, Cal shifted slightly and took a pull on his Shiner Bock. He was close enough to touch, and she clenched her hands into fists just in case her fingers suddenly decided to act out her secret fantasies. He didn’t even look her way, and he probably wouldn’t unless he felt the need to toss an insult at her.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
I really love the O'Brien family! This story involves Cal, one of the O'Brien kids, and Bebe, his sister’s BFF. Sparks are evident between the two, even though they each pretend not to stand the other one. For Bebe, it’s hands off because a) he's her bestie's brother, 2) he makes her feel things no other man ever has, and 3) she's engaged, albeit a fake engagement, but still.

For Cal, he's been interested in Bebe from the first time he met her, but it’s clear that she wants nothing to do with him. He doesn't understand what made her so antagonistic towards him, but can't keep himself from sparring with her at any function they are at.

Things change when Cal overhears, ahem – eavesdrops – on a conversation between Bebe and Teagan where Bebe is lamenting her "V" status. When Cal offers to help her with her dilemma, Bebe says yes, and thus begins the romance of Bebe's dreams. Cal knows that Bebe thinks this is just pretend on his part and he's not sure what he'll do when she discovers he's in this for the long haul.

The author did a wonderful job of creating characters that were easy to love and root for. She also gave us a worthy and realistic villain (the fiancé), which made the reader root for Cal and Bebe all the more.

Angela☆☆☆☆☆
This series just keeps getting better and better with each installment, and Hanging by a Thread is now my favorite book in the Riley O’Brien & Co. series…so far. Although we’ve met Cal and Bebe in the previous books, we didn’t learn enough about either of them to keep someone new to the series from enjoying this book as a standalone. That said, if you’ve read and enjoyed the previous books, then you’ll be happy for the chance to spend more time with the O’Brien family and the company their family has built and grown over several generations.

Cal is the middle O’Brien child and, like his siblings, takes pride in the job he performs for the family company. He works hard and enjoys his life, but wants what his brother and sister have found – that special person to love. He actually knows who he wants, but Bebe is his sister’s best friend and she made it clear from their first meeting that she disliked him. Yet no one knows that Bebe’s dislike is merely a smokescreen for her feelings – Cal was the first and only man who she’s ever been attracted to and, as a 30-year-old virgin, she still has no idea how to handle those feelings. Bebe’s inability to deal with Cal soon takes backseat to a bigger problem – her fiancé has reneged on their engagement of convenience and is now blackmailing her to marry him so that he can take his place in his family’s business. What makes the situation worse is that Bebe has no one to talk to about it because none of her friends know about the engagement, not even her best friend, Teagan. Even though Bebe can see no way out of the arranged marriage, she refuses to let Akash be her first, and getting rid of her virginity is something she can talk to Teagan about. Fortunately, Cal overhears that conversation and sees this as the perfect opportunity to work the woman out of his system…and if more comes of it, he wouldn’t be opposed to that one bit. What starts out as an arrangement, quickly becomes more as both Bebe and Cal are far more invested in the other than they’re willing to reveal. Just as they can envision a future together, Bebe’s life implodes and explodes, leaving Bebe to wonder if Cal will come to her rescue or be a casualty of the fallout.

I absolutely loved getting to know Bebe better. Sutton has crafted a character whose past is simultaneously impressive and heartbreaking, and I had no problem believing that she had reached the age of thirty with her virginity intact. Being one of the O’Brien siblings, fans of the series have spent some time with him in the past books, but it only scratched the surface of who Cal was and I really liked getting to know him better as well. I really liked how Cal took his time with Bebe, trying to guard his heart even as he tried to win hers, and I especially liked how he handled her with care once he realized exactly how inexperienced Bebe actually was. As for the chemistry between them, it was scorchingly hot. I was jealous of Bebe, and not just because of Cal’s sexual prowess. The man was a sweetheart when it came to wooing her. I have to say that I was surprised that he was willing to hear her out after her fiancé shows up, spewing his half-truths. As for Akash, Bebe sure showed him! I loved watching Bebe and Cal fall in love, as well as catching up with Quinn & Amelia and Teagan & Nick. Hanging by a Thread was an excellent addition to the Riley O'Brien & Co. series and even though Cal is the last of the O’Brien siblings, I hope that Sutton has plans for more books in the series, or at least a spin-off – after all, Ava Grace deserves her happily ever after.

The Perfect Fit by Jenna Sutton Blog Tour

Zeke May has spent the past two years recovering from an IED attack and trying to adjust to life as a civilian. The veteran hiring program at denim empire Riley O’Brien & Co. offers a new beginning. The only problem is the high cost of housing in San Francisco, and Margo Lange could be the perfect solution.

Now that Margo has completed veterinary school, she’s ready to fulfill her dream of living in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, she’s drowning in student loan debt and the only places she can afford are dumps. Luckily, one of her uncle’s Army buddies needs a roommate.

Although Zeke’s place is a perfect fit for Margo’s budget, he is not what she expects. He’s much younger than her uncle, and he’s melt-your-panties hot. She doesn’t want to fall for him, but it doesn’t take her long to realize that Zeke is the perfect fit for her, regardless of their age gap. Too bad he’s so obviously still in love with his ex-wife…

As Zeke stood in the elevator in the Four Seasons, he ran his hand over his hair, searching for any unruly strands. Satisfied that everything was in order, he adjusted the French cuffs of his bright white tuxedo shirt and furtively checked his fly to make sure it was zipped.

Never in his life had he showered, shaved, and dressed as quickly as he had tonight. He was surprised he’d only nicked himself once.

Even though he’d driven like a maniac to get to the hotel as fast as humanly possible, he was still forty-five minutes late. He hated being late, regardless of the circumstances. But his tardiness tonight was even more unacceptable because Margo had been counting on him.

Because of stupid softball game, she’d had to take a taxi in an evening gown. She was probably livid, and he couldn’t blame her.

Why hadn’t he just left the game early? Better yet, why hadn’t he declined Margo’s invitation to attend Pictures & Paws?

He should have. But he’d hated the thought of her going to this type of event alone. And, if he were honest with himself, he would admit that he’d wanted to go with her, even if it was a monumentally bad idea.

Being around her was torture. A couple of days ago, he’d accidently bumped into her in the kitchen, his front grazing her back. That small touch had created a big problem … behind his zipper.

Ever since that day when he had retrieved Margo’s panties from Roby’s paws, Zeke had tried—and failed—to push her back into the roommate-only zone. But those tiny panties had already done their damage.

Whenever they were together, he constantly thought about what she wore underneath her clothes. He even thought about it when they weren’t together.

His dormant libido had awakened, and now the damn thing was boiling like an active volcano. It could erupt at any time.

Zeke should be happy that his penis had returned to its normal operations. But he wasn’t. Instead, he was frustrated and edgy and hard all the fucking time.

He didn’t understand why this was happening now. And he sure as hell didn’t understand why it was happening with Margo.

It didn’t happen with anyone else.

Today, during the softball game, a pretty woman on the opposing team had run into him. The force of the impact had knocked them to the ground, with her sprawled on top.

She’d been a sweet-smelling, curvy armful. And his penis had been uninterested.

If it could talk, it would have said, I’m bored. But around Margo, it said, Mmm, I want some of that.

Of course, his dick didn’t care about the eleven-year age gap between them. And it didn’t care that she had her whole life ahead of her, while he had already lived a big portion of his.

Finally, the elevator reached the fifth floor. When he stepped out, he immediately began to look for Margo. No matter where they were, her bright hair made it easy to spot her.

After searching the area where the pictures were displayed and the ballroom where dinner would be served, he wandered onto the terrace. The huge space overlooked Yerba Buena Gardens, and the surrounding buildings provided plenty of light.

He surveyed the small group of people on the terrace. His gaze landed on a woman with vibrant reddish-gold hair. She was a little taller than Margo, and her hair was wavy instead of straight. Her back was to him, the flawless skin exposed by her form-fitting dress.

Damn, that dress is something else.

The dress’s lace overlay gave the impression that she was naked underneath. And the way it hugged her curvy hips and cupped her round ass … that should be prohibited in public venues to prevent riots.

Wait … he recognized that ass. He saw it—stared at it—every day.

The woman in the sexy dress was Margo. And the moment his dick realized that fact, it woke up from its nap and did a couple of stretches in preparation for vigorous exercise.

Zeke took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. For a brief moment, he thought about turning around, going back home, and locking himself in his bedroom until this insanity passed.

But then Margo glanced in his direction. And he knew, without a doubt, that he wasn’t going anywhere.

I really enjoyed this book. Ms. Sutton brought to life two completely different characters and let the reader get to know them as they got to know each other.

What started out as a favor to a friend, Zeke realizes that he really likes Margo for the person she is, smart and funny, not to mention cute. Margo likes Zeke, he's truly a good guy and besides, her dog likes him.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has a few hours on their hands who's looking for a smart and sweet romance.

The Perfect Fit was a perfect way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. It also proved to me that my love of this series is not just because I love the O’Brien family, but because I enjoy Sutton’s writing. Unlike the previous installment in the series, neither of the main characters in this novella are a member of the O’Brien family. Well, not the genetic O’Brien family, that is, because Zeke is an employee at Riley O'Brien & Co., making him a member of the corporate family. I’ll be honest, even though I’ve read the previous books (and loved them) I don’t think that we’ve met Zeke before, but if we have, I apologize profusely for not remembering such a scrumptious male character – lucky Margo.

When Margo makes the move to San Francisco, she quickly discovers that she will need a roommate in order to avoid living in a hovel in a dangerous neighborhood. Luckily for her, her uncle has an old military buddy in the Bay area who is in need of a roommate. While the old military buddy, Zeke, isn’t nearly as old as Margo was expecting, the eleven-year age difference is irrelevant as neither of them are interested in a relationship for various reasons, so they agree to become roommates. Now, as would be expected in any romance novel where a man and a woman are sharing an apartment and aren’t looking for love, it’s not surprising that Zeke and Margo develop feelings for one another. But Zeke’s age, PTSD, and amputee-status leave him feeling as though Margo deserves more than he can give her and he does a bang up job of leading her to believe he has no interest in her. Even when Margo discovers that Zeke is attracted to her and cares about her, his behavior toward her continues to suggest that their relationship will never be more than platonic. And then one night, everything changes when Zeke realizes that Margo not only accepts him as he is, she wants him just as he is. Now even though this is a novella, Sutton still manages to throw a wrench into the mix to cause just the right amount of drama that means Margo and Zeke have to work for a future together.

Having read the previous books, I really wasn’t surprised that I enjoyed The Perfect Fit. What I was surprised about was Zeke’s reaction to learning that Margo already knew his secrets. I was flabbergasted and ultimately pleased with the way it played out – it was rather refreshing. The chemistry between the two is pretty heated and when they finally succumb to it, it gets really hot because Zeke is a man making up for lost time and enjoying the fact that Margo’s tastes are decidedly different than those of his ex-wife. I also liked how the author gave us glimpses of both characters in their own lives, outside of the apartment – Margo at the veterinary practice and Zeke at the company softball games. This was an added dimension of character development that doesn’t always occur in novellas, so I appreciated that the author gave me a chance to get to know the characters better as individuals. The subtle jumps in time prevented the romance from having that insta-love feel and Roby was a delightful addition to the book. I really hope that we get to catch up with Zeke and Margo in future installments in the series and I’m looking forward to reading Hanging by a Thread soon.
