It's in My Blood by Sean Azinsalt Blog Tour

Death eventually comes for us all. But what if there’s a way for older people to regain their youth? To stay a step ahead of the grim reaper?

Turning 40 was the last straw for me. It’s practically 60 in gay years and I wasn’t ready for dentures yet, so I came to Youthology — a program that injects clients with blood transfusions from young, fit and healthy donors.

I chose Nick.

Handsome. Masculine. And more importantly, young.

I thought I hit the lottery, until my life started to change for the worst. Not even the top medical experts can explain what happened to me. From the moment Nick’s blood flooded into my veins, I stopped being me, and I became something new; something dangerous and deadly.

I became my donor.

His obsessions are mine now. His darkest desires, his dreams, his needs, and nightmares are all a part of me, and I don’t want to let them go.

I embrace them and the beautiful boy who haunts both of our dreams.

My blood pact was sealed the moment I entered Youthology.

I never thought I’d become a killer.

This book is part of CRIMINAL DELIGHTS. Each novel can be read as a standalone and contains a dark M/M romance.

Warning: These books are for adult readers who enjoy stories where lines between right and wrong get blurry. High heat, twisted and tantalizing, these are not for the fainthearted.

3 Dark Stars

Sean Azinsalt is a new-to-me author.

Spoiler-free review which is why I will be vague on the plot, as I don't want to ruin the reading experience.

It's in My Blood definitely fits the overall dark theme of the Criminal Delights: Obsession series, which are standalone collaborations by multiple authors.

As someone who just turned 40 on my last birthday, I could easily empathize with how there must be some sort of internal gauge inside our DNA that trips over to having things go haywire in our bodies at the strike of 40. I understood Mark's need for the fountain of youth, even if the lengths he used were far-reaching (uncomfortable laughter).

Mark is difficult to swallow – his almost narcissistic viewpoint comes off as whining, overbearing. What had me sympathizing over turning 40, also left me feeling down on myself, because with all of Mark's vapid whining, it grated on me, because it felt super judgy directed at the over 40 crowd. Only we don't have a fountain of youth or a sociopathic need to basically cannibalize a donor (metaphorical, not literal). This mindset made it easy to believe how Mark devolved into the person who would... do what he did, and the path of travel to get to the destination.

Mark's friend/boss suggested on his fortieth birthday to try Youthology, where he would write an article for their publication on the process and the results. It was perfect timing for Mark.

Now, this is where I have to be vague, because I don't wish to ruin the reading experience. This is a genuinely unique novel. A donor is chosen, where blood transfusions revitalize the recipient, only Mark became a special case. Not only did he become a special case, he became a special headcase, obsessed with the donor. Mark simultaneously loved and loathed Nick, finding symmetry, almost poetic justice in what took place.

Nick's wrongdoing made it slightly easier to swallow his predestined outcome, but that doesn't mean it was easy to read the scenes between them, knowing where it was headed in the end.

While I found the novel intriguing, with a tight premise, I wasn't fully engaged nor entertained. Perhaps it was my mood. I enjoy reading dark novels, but this didn't pull me in to where I needed to know what happened next. The narrator's voice didn't connect well with me, so I believe that added to my issue. Just not my cup of tea, so to speak.

It's in My Blood was a fitting installment in the Criminal Delights series, which I believe will please fans of the author and the series overall.

Blood & Bitcoin by L.A. Witt Audiobook Review

Chris Emmett has a talent for screwing up and landing on his feet. As a SEAL, he managed to evade bullets and court-martials alike. As an FBI agent, he dodged danger and disciplinary action—right up until he didn’t.

With his career and freedom hanging in the balance, he’ll do whatever it takes to clean the slate… including an off-the-books deep cover solo mission.

The objective: infiltrate the Hive, a complex crime syndicate operating on the dark web, and find out who’s trying to kill Piker, the organization’s enigmatic and strangely alluring modern day Mob boss.

The moment he’s pulled into the Hive, Chris enters a world where no one is what they seem, including the man he’s there to protect. Lines blur between moral and wrong, legal and criminal, ally and foe, and—as Piker’s seductive magnetism draws Chris in—straight and queer.

Chris is running out of time to stop a killer. He has dangerous feelings for a dangerous man, and the deeper he moves into the realms of organized crime, the less he knows and the fewer people he can trust.

And that’s before he learns the truth about Piker’s assassin.

Wow! Just, wow! I mean, I knew Blood & Bitcoin was going to be good based on my co-bloggers’ reviews of the ebook (spoiler-free, thank you, ladies). Between L.A. Witt’s writing and Michael Ferraiuolo’s narration, it was pretty much guaranteed that I’d enjoy it. And yet it still exceeded my expectations. As much as I enjoy the variety of romance genres Witt is able to tackle, I am seriously crushing on her organized crime romances… and I’ve only read two of them. As an aside, if you enjoyed Witt’s If the Seas Catch Fire, especially the audiobook, you’re not gonna wanna miss Blood & Bitcoin because while the stories are nothing alike, it has that same intense, gritty, ‘people aren’t who they seem and you never know who you can trust’ feel to it.

As a disgraced ex-FBI agent and former SEAL, Chris Emmett is believable as a man desperate for a job that would put the only skills he has to good use. Unfortunately for Chris, the man he’s been sent to protect is justifiably paranoid and makes it nearly impossible for Chris to do his job. Fortunately for Chris, he’s a the-ends-justify-the-means kind of guy and he maneuvers himself into an ideal position to protect Trent and do his job as a double agent. But the closer Chris gets to Trent, the more he begins to question his mission because the intel he was given doesn’t add up with what he learns about Trent, WST, the Hive, and who’s behind the threats against Trent. Making matters worse, Chris is drawn to Trent in a way he’s never experienced before and he’s not sure what’s worse: that he’s falling for an organized crime boss or that he’s falling for a man.

Witt crafted a story that is ripe for the picking of conflict and she harvested the heck out of it. We not only get multiple servings of suspense as Chris works to earn Trent’s trust, thwarts assassination attempts on Trent’s life, undertakes missions to interfere with Cartel business, collects intel on WST and the Hive, and talks his way out of a bullet more than once when caught lying to Trent, but we also get plenty of yummy, forbidden angst as Chris grapples with his unexpected attraction to Trent. Because it takes a while for Chris to acknowledge his attraction, I was treated to a delicious build-up of sexual tension that added to the overall feeling of suspense in the novel as I listened with rapt attention, waiting to see who was going to snap and make the first move. And it was HAWT! But even that didn’t compare with the intensity of the action that plays out when betrayals are revealed, and when desperate men make desperate decisions in the name of love.

Michael Ferraiuolo does such a tremendous job with Witt’s characters and storyline that I stayed up later than I should have listening to it and resumed listening to the audiobook as soon as I could upon waking the next morning (well, technically the same morning as it was well after midnight when I stopped listening). Blood & Bitcoin has a rather large cast of characters and Ferraiuolo not only does an exceptional job of creating unique voices for them but also in conveying a full range of emotions for them, sometimes at whiplash speed, dragging the listener along for the nail-biting ride. I’m a bit of a multi-tasker when listening to audiobooks and found myself stopping what I was doing because I got so sucked into the action that I couldn’t continue the menial tasks. Oh yes, Witt and Ferraiuolo commanded my complete attention more than a few times over the course of the audiobook. Is it wrong that I really, really hope that Witt gets attacked by a litter of organized crime plot bunnies that drag her back to the Hive to create more stories? Because I would love to catch up with Chris and Trent again and get more stories from the Hive, especially with Ferraiuolo back to narrate. A girl can hope. And thankfully a girl can listen to her Blood & Bitcoin audiobook again… well, after she listens to If the Seas Catch Fire again first.

P.S. – If you know of any other organized crime romances by L.A. Witt, drop me a comment so I can check them out. Extra points if they’re already on audiobook.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn't lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don't tell Lauren. Putting sketchy characters behind bars had always been Clint’s forte, but when new feelings arise, Clint’s conscience is tested. Furthermore, what will happen if Clint is forced to choose between the love of his life, his career, and his morality?

Clint and Archer have been together for a few years. Despite the age difference, Clint believes he's ready to settle down with Archer. However, Archer has other things on his mind.

Then you bring in Holland. Archer and Holland both have an affinity for blood and guts. They find a kindred spirit in each other and even though Holland thought he would use Archer for a different thing, they quickly become bonded.

This was a dark book in that you got to see the darker side of Archer and Holland together. Then, when you brought in Clint, the voyeurism aspect was filled with chemistry. However, the characters all felt one dimensional. The instant nicknames that Holland and Archer took to was also somewhat cheesy.

Overall, while this was much darker than the first, again, I was underwhelmed with the story. This needed more development of the story and characters. Their connection was tenuous at best.

Michael Mandrake pens complex characters already comfortable with their sexuality. Through these, he builds worlds not centered on romance but rather the mainstream and/or obscure plots we might encounter in everyday life and beyond.

I am sure I am in the minority with my opinion on this book, but it wasn't very dark. I was expecting so much more. There were so many pages in the beginning that didn't have dialogue that I was losing interest fast. I need dialogue, not a monologue. When Eirik and Matt meet they’ve both finally met their match. Besides a few hot sex scenes, I was really underwhelmed by the story.

M/M Action, Romance

This is a strange story. It's about a tormented assassin who is finding out that there might be more to life. Eirik is a character who is difficult to get to know. You think he's one dimensional for much of the story, but overall, there are layers beyond what he shows.

Matt knows that he has a target on his back. He's known for a while. But when he comes across Eirik, he can't help but be intrigued.

These two characters together have a fragile friendship. They believe that they could really care for each other, but in reality, they don't know much about each other. While this book is a short one, I wanted more character development.

I'll see if the second book is going to bring a more cohesive story, but this one just missed the mark for me. There is not much darkness in the story. You're kind of wondering why Matt and Eirik are together and it just felt incomplete.

From page one, Blood & Bitcoin pulled me in and left me on the edge of my seat until the last page.

Chris Emmett was a Navy SEAL that knew his way around danger. He got the missions done, maybe not without going rogue a time or two. That was something the FBI wanted on their team until they didn't. Accusing Emmet of taking two lives, which he swears didn't happen. With his life hanging in the balance, he's pulled from jail for a special op infiltrating The Hive, getting intel, and reporting back. Emmet makes it his mission to protect sexy Piker and find out who wants to kill him.

The Hive is a dark web controller of the bitcoin. Not many people know who Piker really is except those closest to him and now the person who wants him dead. Can the ex-SEAL, ex-FBI agent really protect him from this enemy? And better yet, why does he want to? To prove his loyalty, Emmet is put to the test physically on the ops team, which only earns him Piker's undivided attention.

I was so invested in this story. I loved the chemistry Piker and Emmett had. The uncertainty Emmett had regarding Piker. He knew he wanted him, but he couldn't understand why. I always love a good romance with a side of suspense. I couldn't put it! L.A. Witt delivered with this one!

Sarah☆☆☆☆
This action adventure/hacker thriller is an exciting read. This is unlike anything I can remember reading by L.A. Witt and I was thoroughly entertained by the genre bending adventure.

Chris and Piker both exist in a world of murky grey morality. I quickly gave up on the idea of good guys and bad guys and I loved trying to figure out both men’s motivation. Most of the story is told from Chris’ perspective but he’s a delightfully unreliable narrator. Too many of his actions are suspicious and every time I thought I understood who he was working with/for and why, I had to recalculate. Piker is even more difficult to figure out and he’s surrounded by employees who do their best to maintain Piker’s enigmatic identity.

This is a busy novel with tons of subplots. Some of the subplots don’t necessarily contribute to the main story arc and others weren’t completely convincing. Piker catches Chris too many times and I feel like he’s way too forgiving for such a successful crime lord. My brain had to work hard to piece everything together and I feel like the Hive world could have been more successfully introduced over the course of a series – there’s a little too much information thrown at readers in a single novel.

This is marketed as a romance but romance is a pretty simplistic label for the connection between Chris and Piker. Their relationship is a little bit cat and mouse, a little bit alpha male showdown, and a little bit bromance – all lashed together with heapings of sexual chemistry and suspicion. There are a few sexy scenes but nothing terribly romantic. I really enjoyed the relationship between these two men, and they are both a welcome change from L.A. Witt’s recent stream of brooding, middle-aged men and their second chance romances.

This is an exciting read and I love that it feels fresh and new. The book has so much potential to evolve into a great series and I’m really looking forward to the next book in the Hive world.

Devil Next Door by Alex Jane Blog Tour

All Remy Harker wants is a fresh start.

Well, maybe that’s what he tells himself as he rolls up to his nice new house, in the nice little neighborhood, in a town where nobody knows his name.
He’s surrounded by friendly neighbors and a white picket fence. The ugly pink carpet might drive him to insanity, and he can’t stop wondering where the old lady who lived there before him died—but it’s nice.
And if he puts his mind to it, he can be anything—or anyone—he wants to be. He can be nice too.
At least, he thinks he can until he lays eyes on his next-door neighbor.

Luke Boucher is nice.
And quiet.
And perfect.

It doesn’t take long for Remy to insinuate himself into Luke’s life. A camera here, a break-in there.
– It’s not really stalking if you love someone, is it? –

But when Remy’s plan to make a good impression goes to hell, he ends up over his head in more ways than one. Then things aren’t quite so nice anymore.
– It’s not really murder if you love someone, is it? –

Loving your neighbor isn’t so easy when you’re the devil next door.

This book is part of CRIMINAL DELIGHTS. Each novel can be read as a standalone and contains a dark M/M romance.

3.5 Diabolical Stars

Alex Jane is a new-to-me author.

Spoiler-free review, which means to avoid revealing the twists and turns, there won't be much commentary on the content. The review will encompass my entertainment value.

Remy is our narrator, obsessed with Luke. That's the premise in a nutshell, minus twisted spoilers. With that being said, Remy is a stalker, so therefore his personality means he's a detail-oriented person. I liked and loathed that about Remy, simply because him being detail-oriented meant he resonated with me (also that type of personality) yet as a narrator, the story got lost in the details.

That was my biggest issue while reading. This is a short novella, where 90% of the words were the details, the inane actions of everyday life, the setup for the stalking. While I felt this fit perfectly with both Remy's personality and his vocation, I've never been simultaneously bored yet intrigued before.

My issue isn't in the dark content, as that intrigued me, kept me turning the pages when I was quickly losing interest in the story and characters. Remy is a dry character. About halfway through the novella, there is a swift change, almost jarring juxtaposed from the previous flow and release of pertinent information. Obviously the second half entertained me. So if you're also struggling, know that eventually the pacing picks up and the deviancy begins.

While I loved the twists and turns, if this had been a full-length novel, I would have abandoned finishing the read, simply because I needed something to keep me invested earlier on. While intrigued, those inane details, which I understand are to set a stage... I have an imagination and didn't need everything spelled out for me.

As for the dark and dirty, I enjoyed those diabolical portions. I do need to add, when it came to doing the deed, the sadistic sociopathic fun, it was fade-to-black. The reader is shown the before and after, not the during.

So, I'm not sure how I feel about this book, other than it is twisted. While this story is very short, it also lacks some development in the characters. They go from being one way to another with the flip of a switch and we're just supposed to be okay with that switch.

Remy is the narrator. You get most scenes from his point of view. But because of his personality, you get EVERY detail there is. It got to the point where I was skimming because there were so many details.

It takes until the book is about 60% over before the story becomes more fast paced and truly takes the reader on a journey. Now once you're on the train, you can't really get off. It has bends and twists that make the story diabolical and the dark romance that this is slated to be.

Overall, it was a twisted, dark book. However, I think it would have been more successful as either a full-length novel with more in it, or a shorter one with just the second half.

After spending far too long creating stories in her head, Alex finally plucked up the courage to write them down and realized it was quite fun seeing them on the page after all.

Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to entertain by spinning a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. Although, if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.

With only a dysfunctional taste in music and a one-eyed dog to otherwise fill her days, Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.

Wrong Way Home by K.A. Merikan Blog Tour

One wrong turn. One right man.

Colin. Rule-follower. Future doctor. Witness to murder. Captive.
Taron. Survivalist. Mute. Murderer. Captor.

Like every other weekend, Colin is on his way home from university, but he’s taunted by the notion that he never takes risks in life and always follows the beaten path. On impulse, he decides to take a different route. Just this one time. What he doesn’t realize is that it’s the last time he has a choice.

He ends up taking a detour into the darkest pit of horror, abducted by a silent, imposing man with a blood-stained axe. But what seems like his worst nightmare might just prove to be a path to the kind of freedom Colin never knew existed.

Taron has lived alone for years. His land, his rules. He’d given up on company long ago. After all, attachment is a liability. He deals with his problems on his own, but the night he needs to dispose of an enemy, he ends up with a witness to his crime.

The last thing Taron needs is a nuisance of a captive. Colin doesn’t deserve death for setting foot on Taron’s land, but keeping him isn’t optimal either. It’s only when he finds out the city boy is gay that an altogether different option arises. One that isn’t right, yet tempts him every time Colin’s pretty eyes glare at him from the cage.

Please read all the trigger warnings before starting this book. While I didn't find the book to be dark, several might. This book was more angst to me than dark. I'm not going to repeat what the blurb says about this book; it was a tad twisted but so not what I expected. I actually loved the bickering between Taron and Colin and after finishing the book, it was kind of a sweet book in a weird kind of way. I loved how well Taron and Colin meshed together. Colin was finally "free" from his daily obligations and could just be. I also enjoyed the cats. These two went through so much in the past but what will happen in the end? You'll have to read the book to find out. You won't be disappointed!

Colin is living a life that isn't really his own. He works hard but doesn't really have friends and is seeking his parents' approval, despite doing what they have planned out for his life. When it becomes abundantly clear that he needs some kind of change, he heads on a different path towards his family dinner. What he doesn't expect is to come across someone who is running for their life.

Taron is living a solitary life. He knows what he signed up for. With a trauma in his past, Taron knows that he has to fend for himself because nobody else is going to help him. Taron is a difficult character to get to know. He keeps to himself and really only lets people see a glimpse of who he is.

When Colin and Taron meet, it's a difficult situation for both of them. Where this story turns for me is when it appears that the only way to survive is to comply with whatever Taron wants. Colin knows that he wants to survive. What he doesn't realize is that Taron is going to show him a way of living that he never expected.

I'm not sure if I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot going on and while I liked how the author was able to develop each character and their reactions to each other, the overall story was not something I really enjoyed. The writing was well done and the characters were well developed, but I don't think "liked" is what I would say about this book.
