Of Claws and Fangs is a short-story compilation from Faith Hunter, featuring stories mostly set in the Jane Yellowrock universe, as well as the sister series, Soulwood.

While this is a collection of short stories, I would suggest being current on both series to avoid spoilers, as the stories span the timeframe from predating the debut novel to the most current release.

Since I'm not one to hunt down short stories in a massive series, these were all new-to-me, even though they were previously released in newsletters and websites, most of them taken down after a short period of time. Even if you've read some, you may have missed others.

The heading of each story explains its origin (where it was posted and how it fits into the overall series). Whether you've had the opportunity to read them or not, I appreciate them all being in one handy location, easily accessed to get a hit of my favorite characters in one of my all-time favorite series.

I thoroughly enjoyed picking up the collection, where I immersed myself in the point-of-view of Jane's cohorts, being inside their thoughts for the first time. Each story is of variable length, where if you have five to ten minutes to spare, it's an excellent way to de-stress and relax while being entertained.

Of all the stories, Of Cats and Cars was my favorite. It was also one of the longest stories. Nothing is as enjoyable as Beast, especially a trixsy Beast in love with Edmund. This is set in the timeframe when Jane is ill, where she was in beast-form more often than not, but Jane was deep healing in the background, allowing Beast free-reign.

Beast wanted to hunt cows with trees on their heads in a car with no head, and Jane allowed the bargain. Poor Edmund's Maserati. Watching Beast be flirty and manipulative with such a powerful man, a man she sees as her mate, even though Jane sees Edmund as her subordinate. Delightful, adorable, and laugh out loud hilarious, I will be rereading this short many times to come.

Leo, Master of the City of New Orleans (along with a good paragraph of other titles) was predominant is many of the stories, sure to please fans. We see things predating Jane, events which were mentioned or glossed over in previous installments. Being inside Leo's head was exciting and refreshing.

Other notable mentions were cameos from the Everhart witches, along with Leo, Beast, Edmund, and others. The connection Jane has fostered with her made family and friends is one of the highlights of the series, and these shorts showcase her nearest and dearest, filled with humor, emotion, and action & adventure, set to the backdrop of the Jane Yellowrock universe.

While I am sad that the Jane Yellowrock series will be coming to a close with the next novel, I cannot wait to see what other projects Faith Hunter has in store for us. This series is on my reread list, and I'm happy to add Of Claws and Fangs to the collection.

I’m a massive Lily Morton fangirl and I loved every word of this short story collection. It’s a collection of scenes featuring the couples from several of my favourite books. Each extract is prefaced with a little note from the author explaining the context behind it.

As always, the stories contain a wonderful mix of snark, humour, heart – and a few teary moments. I think I love Morton’s writing more with each book, but it was amazing to go back and revisit old friends from books I haven’t read in a while. All the characters in Morton’s books are interlinked and this collection is organised in a way that makes even the most tenuous connections a little more clear.

A word of caution – this collection adds a little something extra to Morton’s previously published books but it really won’t make any sense on its own. New readers need to start at the very beginning of Morton’s backlist with something like Deal Breaker or Oz and read through the author’s books before they can appreciate this collection. The books are all fabulous and this one is a little cherry on top.

Fantastic Hope ~ Edited by Laurell K. Hamilton & William McCaskey

A collection of sixteen sci-fi and fantasy stories edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton and author William McCaskey.

A child’s wish for her father comes true. The end of the world has never been so much fun. Conquering personal demons becomes all too real. It’s not always about winning; sometimes it’s about showing up for the fight. It’s about loving your life’s work, and jobs that make you question everything.

In this anthology, seventeen authors have woven together brand-new stories that speak to the darkness and despair that life brings while reminding us that good deeds, humor, love, sacrifice, dedication, and following our joy can ignite a light that burns so bright the darkness cannot last.

Laurell K. Hamilton and William McCaskey are joined by Kevin J. Anderson, Griffin Barber, Patricia Briggs, Larry Correia, Kacey Ezell, Monalisa Foster, Robert E. Hampson, John G. Hartness, Jonathan Maberry, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., Jessica Schlenker, Sharon Shinn, M.C. Sumner, Patrick M. Tracy, and Michael Z. Williamson in this collection.

Spoiler-Free Review

This won't be a comprehensive review of the content, simply because a small rundown of the plots would pretty much spoil most of the short stories, giving too much information away.

Fantastic Hope is an anthology of 16 short stories by different authors, each featuring the science fiction genre.

Laurell K. Hamilton (LKH) is one of my all-time favorite authors, the Anita Blake series at the top of my reread list. I was thrilled to read even the smallest of short stories in that universe, so I jumped at the chance to read Fantastic Hope. Other than LKH, Patricia Briggs is the only other author I've ever read previously. Both of their short stories were familiar to me, like a homecoming by seeing some of my favorite characters. I actually read the Anita Blake short twice, simply because it was nice to read something new in that universe.

Enjoying the anthology, I read about two shorts per day on average, trying to draw out the experience. Stepping away helped so that I didn't get the stories mixed up, and gave me time to research the author. Some of the stories were a massive hit for me, whetting my appetite to go back and search out the universe in which the story was born. Others were so-so, but still captured my interest to check out the author's backlist, simply because I was unfamiliar with their worlds.

Highly recommended. All in all, even if you're only familiar with one or two authors in the anthology, Fantastic Hope is a great opportunity to discover other science fiction authors, just a small taste of their writing style and the worlds they've created.

Sarah – ☆☆☆
As a slightly crazed Laurell K. Hamilton fan, I had really high hopes for this anthology but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

I’m honestly not sure how much of my ambivalent reaction to this collection is because of the actual stories or to the fact that I was quite unwell while reading and found it difficult to concentrate at times. I’m quite reluctant for anyone to be guided by my personal response to the anthology but I will try to outline some of my reservations.

Firstly, this collection of stories is a mashup of genres and I’m not sure the mix is completely successful. While I love Patricia Briggs’ and Laurell K Hamilton’s Urban Fantasy, I’m not a huge science fiction fan and I have to be in the right mood for action thrillers and philosophical diatribes.

I also worry that the timing of this collection isn’t brilliant. The first story is about a special ops team racing to prevent a pandemic – and I read it while quite ill from the pandemic that no one was able to stop. The preface talks about a collection of hopeful stories but the only stories I’m currently managing to engage with are fluffy romcoms – and I know I’m not alone. I found the violent action in too many of these stories difficult and some of the hope seemed quite intangible and ephemeral.

The preface also explains that this is a collection of stories by a mix of new and established writers. Usually, I love collections like this because I fall in love with at least one new writer. That didn’t happen here. I enjoyed Briggs’ and Hamilton’s stories but failed to engage with most of the others. I really couldn’t follow the story about Estefan and the battle between knowledge and belief and it took me ages to understand what was going on in the one about the teddy bear and the soldier with PTSD. I was thoroughly confused by the futuristic space adventure that doesn’t offer any real introduction or world building at the start. Again, I read this with a fever so some of my responses can be attributed to my addled brain.

Ultimately, while this anthology didn’t work for me, I hope the collection connects with other readers. As reviewers, we often sign up for books months ahead and have a limited window in which to read them before publication. I really wouldn’t have chosen to read this book during the past two weeks and I’m very aware that I might have engaged better with it at a different time.

This book is a brilliant idea! Who hasn't thought about characters in their favorite books, long after reading them? Checking In gave us teeny glimpses into the "current" lives of favorite characters – and I loved every single snippet. I might love Law the most (just because he's the Law!).

We start this little journey with Constantine and Dulcie, who visit their hometown and reminisce. Of course, that's not all that happens when these two are together! Kicking off the book with these two just set the entire mood for me. I loved The Bad Ones. Honestly, who am I kidding? I loved everything Stylo Fantôme has written.

Muscle Memory – this one just about killed me.

My Time in the Affair – this was beautiful, and absolutely the closure I needed for this story.

What can I say about Wulf, Katya, and Liam? These guys are a treat!

Every single update is an absolutely perfect addition to each story ever told by Fantôme.
Some are deep, some are light, but all are awesome!

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
Checking In is an anthology, obviously checking in with the completed works by Stylo Fantôme. Since I've been a bad girl and have only read Twin Estates and The Kane series, I can testify to the fact that it was easy to navigate to the short stories I was looking forward to reading without spoiling the ones I've yet to try. As I clicked past other stories, I had the desire to check out the rest of the author's published works in the near future. Win-win.

I'm reviewing only that which I read, unable to give an opinion about the shorts that are in other series I've yet to try.

Twin Estates

Escaping their reception, a randy Wulf showcases his douche-baggery as he and Katya take an elevator ride up to their wedding suite. Oh, how I've missed his grouchy, exacting personality. The married couple encounters the other two couples in the series, our naughty twins, alongside Wulf's personal assistant and Katya's right-hand woman.

It was a pleasure to see everyone again, after their series ended, a quick glimpse into their happily ever afters. A little hijinks to celebrate the momentous occasion.

The Kane Series

Narrated by Sanders.

This wasn't a warm and fuzzy, comfortable read. Tatum is her usual irrational, train wreck self. Jameson is just as baiting as ever. Bickering and fighting for no good reason, with TSTL (too stupid to live) actions taking place, Sanders is left to play mediator.

While what takes place happens by accident, Tate always running off gets her into trouble as usual. Not blaming anyone but the driver, but at some point Tate must take responsibility for her irrational, irresponsible, immature behavior, with Jameson realizing he's no better.

Truth be told, as much as I enjoyed this series, this just hammered home how toxic Tatum and Jameson truly are, and no relationship will ever function healthily with them. Sanders tries to spin it as faith and true love at the end of the story, but I just feel it's the need for therapy and emotional maturity. They bait each other just for the drama of it, and it's too much to swallow, especially combined with the deeper, darker emotions that were shown in this short story.

By the end of it, I felt no empathy for the train wrecks known as Tatum and Jameson, and wished Sanders had an ounce of self-preservation and would just walk away and never look back.

--------

Overall, I enjoyed the short story featuring Katya and company, wished I hadn't read Sander's story, and am curious to take a sneak peek at others featured in the anthology to figure out which of Fantôme's other works would be a good fit for me to read.

Highly recommend by fans of the author/series/books who wish to know what happened after the epilogues.

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

Triggers: Clowns (which I hate!)

Noel and Sam are such a cute couple. They have everything going for them right now. You see that Noel wants to live closer to her family, but with the Halloween holiday coming up fast and her dad's obsession with said holiday, you get to see in to the hilarity of the family.

I loved how supportive Sam was of Noel's dad, despite the craziness.

So, while there was a fantastic hilarity to this story, you also were able to see the love that the family had for each other.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
4.5 stars

Ms. Sivec has a totally off beat and wonderful sense of humour, which suits Halloween very, very well. Anyone who has read the earlier Holidays stories will be all ready to roll on this one – if they are new to you, then be prepared for super-crazy and kooky! And be ready to want to go back and catch up too. Everyone gets their moment of glory, but really Sam is the hero of the hour (again) and his gesture of love to Noel is perfect! Mad, but hilarious!

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
The Pumpkin Was Stuffed is the latest instalment in Tara Sivec's The Holidays series which follows Noel and Sam's romance. I've only read the first two books in this series but had no trouble following this story and think it could be enjoyed as a standalone.

This story is very funny. I laughed out loud over and over again. Noel's family are pretty nuts. Her crazy dad, who wins his street's holiday decorating competition every year and has competition from new unseen neighbours. Her mum continues to openly provide far too much information about her parent's sex lives and Aunt Bobbie needs to stay away from drugs. But most fun of all are Scheva and Alex, who are having a Halloween wedding that I would have loved to have attended. Noel's outfit, as chosen by Scheva, is hilarious.

Amongst all the hilarity we do get a little bit more of Noel and Sam's love story with Sam proving that he is the most amazing and romantic guy around.

I had a great time reading this book. If you are looking for a good laugh this Halloween, The Pumpkin Was Stuffed is well worth reading.

Oliver and Jade are such a sweet couple. While you get the impression that they are both horribly shy, you know that deep down, they are looking for more in their life.

When they are helping to throw a party for abuse survivors, things begin to go wrong. I found that the scary part of the story was very entertaining and well developed. You really didn't know what to expect or who was doing them.

The romance wasn't overdone and had just the right amount of sweetness to not overtake the story. I really liked this one.

Kris – ☆☆☆
Jade comes from an abusive relationship and seeks safe haven at the community center where she's helping prepare for a Halloween party. Oliver is a big burly, sorta brooding handyman at the center and Jade has had her eye on him for a bit now. Being very shy and quiet she can’t find the moment to talk to Oliver. Somehow, they end up locked in a closet together. Scary stuff is going on in the center outside the closet door but Oliver makes Jade feel safe and secure and the two get down to a bit of "10 seconds of heaven" with a little make out moment. There's some scary stuff going on around the couple, but they find themselves safe in their "unsafe haven." It was sweet with a little scary but nothing that would keep me up at night. Quick easy read.

This was a very frustrating story for me. While it did have more of a party theme to it, the short snippets of characters we were able to see left me wanting.

I liked how Bancroft and Ruby banter back and forth and they have some great chemistry. You get to see some jealousy among them, which gives them a feeling of having a lot of passion.

Then you have Amie and Armstrong and their relationship borders on emotional abuse. Armstrong is horrible and I hated him. Not to mention that he still lets his mother run his life. I also wished that Amie was more able to stand up for herself – she essentially just took whatever was dished out.

Finally, you had Lexington. He sounded so confident and sexy, but in the end, he was just an extra character – I think we needed more from him for this story to feel more complete.

I enjoyed the relationships between dynamic and hope there is more to come from these characters, as I felt that a lot went unsaid.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This novella follows the Shacking Up book – which I have to admit I have not yet read, however I shall be rectifying that very soon! There is enough of an introduction that my lack of knowledge did not matter enough to affect my enjoyment, but I bet I would have got some of the inside jokes better if I had.

This is a very cute, sassy, and comedic little story – with some super hot interludes, which in one case definitely led to a most unfortunate double wardrobe malfunction. At least that is how it is for Bane and Ruby. Things are not so good for Amalie, but I have a feeling that Lex is going to be her salvation in future installments – I certainly hope so.

This was a sweet story, but unless you've read the previous book in the series, I felt that you were kind of missing the different dynamics between and among the characters. It's a very short read and it lets you look in to each couples' life, but you really do just have a glimpse. If you didn't know what or who everyone was, it would seem that it was a very truncated story. There was not a true Halloween theme for me and I found it just a kind of awkward story.

Logan and Mason were their hot, protective selves and Sam is just as awesome. She is having the worst Halloween – her friends are dropping like flies and she can't seem to stop it. There is someone after her and even with everyone trying to save and protect everyone, this mystery person is getting to them.

This is a short story about the main characters in Tijan's Fallen Crest High story. It was scary, sexy, and despite knowing what you can guess when you read books like this, it was very entertaining. I loved seeing these characters again.

Kris – ☆☆☆
I've been a junkie for the Fallen Crest High characters since book one. I love Mason and Logan, they're loyal, loving, and downright jerks when they have to be. Everything you want to love in a male lead character, they have in spades. I've lost some interest in Samantha though in the past few books. She's become very secure in herself and that's great, but almost too much? She's lost any redeeming qualities that made her likable, in my opinion. I'm finding her cold and too aloof. In any case, Mason is off playing football in the NFL. Sam, Logan, and sidekicks are celebrating their last year of college at Cain U with a huge Halloween party. The girls decide to enjoy a girls’ night out on Halloween Eve (we call it Devil’s Night in Michigan) and Sam gets extremely drunk... or maybe she's been drugged? There's a strange cloaked and masked, evil entity following the entourage. All types of horrible things happen to Sam and her friends and who knows what's going on. I found the story very spacey and odd. Very choppy, never really flowing. If this was done intentionally, it was brilliant as it certainly kept me off key and off kilter and slightly freaked out. I had to skip ahead to find out what in THE heck was going on! Perfect for a short Halloween tale, but not my cup of tea! I’m a wuss.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
4 stars of super spooky!

Even if you have never read the series (where have you been?), you will soon be brought up to date with the dynamics and history of the characters. That said, this dark is definitely new!

Very clever, perfect Halloween story, which is very cleverly paced and has enough twists to make you wonder, and then wonder again. It was a satisfyingly spooky tale, perfect for the time of year – and it is always good to catch up with the gang. Not enough of them really, but fun nonetheless.
