M/M Second Chance Romance

Greg loves his sister and with her on bed rest due to her pregnancy, Greg is charged with making their mutual friend Cynthia's bachelorette party a hit. There's one problem... Greg knows nothing about throwing a bachelorette party.

When the bakery that his sister wanted is unavailable, Greg seeks out another one that was recommended to him. What he didn't expect was to find an ex-boyfriend.

Rhys is an amazing baker. When he sees Greg again, he immediately apologizes for being young and immature in his relationship with Greg. He also agrees to help Greg pull off an amazing bachelorette party.

These two have sweet, almost young adult chemistry. They make each other laugh and allow themselves to see if they can rekindle their young love relationship. This book was sweet, funny, and had the added bonus of hilarious bachelorette food.

Sweet Anticipation is a quick enjoyable read. Gregory and Rhys had a brief romance in college and get a second change when Gregory hires Rhys to help him prepare the food for a bachelorette party. This is easy-to-read fun story. I really enjoyed the time the men spent in the kitchen. Sweet Anticipation really put me in the mood to do my Christmas baking.

Twice Baked by Andrew Grey

When the pickiest eater in America is tapped to judge a cooking competition along with his chef ex-boyfriend, will it be a recipe for a second chance… or disaster?

Luke Walker’s humor about foods he can’t stand made him an internet celebrity and his blog, The Pickiest Eater in America, a huge hit. He plans to bring that same lighthearted comedy to the show—but he won’t be the only host.

Meyer Thibodeaux might be a famous chef, but he’s solemn, uptight, and closeted. He’s also Luke's ex. As different as they are, the sparks between Luke and Meyer never really went out, and as they work together, each begins to see the other in a new light, and the passion between them reignites, hot as ever. But secrets, gossip, and rumors on the set could sour their reunion.

I really enjoyed this light-hearted romantic story based around a chef's challenge TV series. I love the idea of having a picky eater as a judge, but did feel sorry for him when he had to try his most hated foods anyway!

Meyer and Luke have a past, but now that they are working together things get interesting – and most of the crew and production team pick up that there is amazing chemistry between them. But have things changed enough?

Be ready for the indisputable – well, in his mind anyway – star of the book... Rosco, Luke's pampered cat! He is a wonderful barometer of how the story and the possible romance is progressing.

If you want a fun story of a cookery show and a lovely second chance romance – with a clever cat – then this is just what you should read next!

If you were the unpopular kid at school who was bullied or generally not treated well by your classmates and you’ve dreamed about returning to your high school reunion as a success, this story is for you. It was so satisfying to see Kevin go to his high school reunion as a successful, confident man and seeing that his high school crush Clay was interested in him was even better.

Reunited is a good story and easily read in an hour or so. It is set over one night and we are left with the possibility of a future between Kevin and Clay. I hope that the author writes more of their story because I’d like to see where they go from here.

Bri is wanting to get back to what he loves... playing basketball. Despite having a great career, Bri does feel that something might be missing. He has been hiding his true identity for so long that when he might have the chance at something real, he's hesitant to take it.

Despite wanting to be back playing, Bri knows that he has to follow the physical therapist's recommendations. When he meets the one physical therapist who will work with him since he's run off everyone else, he is immediately attracted.

Obie has lived his life on his terms. He loves what he does and knows that even though he hasn't found the right guy yet, he's out there. I really loved how fierce Obie can be. He has great friends and even though they can be over the top, he loves them.

I really liked watching Obie and Bri find their way. Even when things were tense, they knew that it was going to be okay.

Slowly Pavle comes out of his shell and Chris finds someone who touches his heart. But as the men looking for Pavle close in, they will stop at nothing to get him out of the way. Pavle is a witness in a trafficking ring. He's alone and scared and has been that way for years. When he's discovered, his social worker and the police want to do all that they can in order to help Pavle heal. Pavle's character is timid and shy, but also has a strength that shows through his actions.

Then you have Chris. He doesn't like his new boss, but when he is chosen to protect a key witness, he wants to do a fantastic job. When he gets to see Pavle and the trauma that he has endured, Chris vows the make sure that Pavle knows he is free.

While this romance is slightly strange, the friendship that develops is amazing. I thought that it was slightly unlikely that someone would be over their trauma as quickly as Pavle was. I also was slightly disappointed in the mystery behind the leak. I thought that it was played up a lot only to be kind of left out in the end.

Overall, this was enjoyable, but I liked book one more. I thought there was more development.

Poppy's Secret by Andrew Grey Audiobook Review

A second chance born of love.

Pat Corrigan and Edgerton "Edge" Winters were ready to start a family-or so Pat thought. At the last minute, Edge got cold feet and fled. Pat didn't bother telling him the conception had already gone through and little Emma was on her way. He didn't want a relationship based on obligation. He'd rather raise his daughter on his own.

Nine years later, Emma and her Poppy are doing fine. Edge isn't. He realizes what he threw away by leaving, and he's back to turn his life around and reclaim his family. It'll take a lot to prove to Pat that he's a new man, and even if Edge succeeds, the secret Pat has hidden for years might shatter their dreams all over again.

Angela – ☆☆☆☆
Poppy’s Secret is a very sweet, second chance romance with just enough angst to keep me entertained, but not so much that it enters new adult territory. I have to hand it to Andrew Grey on this one, the angst that occurs bleeds over from Pat and Edge’s time together in their early twenties, appropriate for the young men they were but not the more world weary men they are now, and for the most part, both men seem to recognize when their disagreements begin sliding back into the land of immaturity and actively try to reign it in, wanting to deal with the problems of the present without so much of their baggage from the past controlling them. It’s a fine line for an author to write and Grey does it well, yet still allows for human nature and hurt feelings to result in the men succumbing to the angst and drama when tensions run high – and there are plenty of reasons for them to run high.

When Pat’s partner left him nine years ago, on the cusp of them beginning a family together, he made the difficult decision to raise the child their surrogate gave birth to on his own and keep their daughter’s existence a secret from Edge, allowing the man he loved to begin the life he obviously wanted more than the family they had planned. Edge’s return to town throws his world into chaos as Pat worries what the man he once loved will say when he learns of Emma’s existence, especially when Edge learns the real secret that Pat has kept all these years. Assuming this isn’t the first romance you’ve ever read, you’ll figure out what the secret is pretty quickly, possibly before you even start the book. However, don’t let that deter you because Grey’s talent in Poppy’s Secret is taking a predictable plot point and crafting a believable story that has an unexpected twist or two to keep you from feeling like you’ve heard this story before. For me, one of the plot twists was one that forced me to abandon the audiobook for several months because I had to be in the right frame of mind for it. No, it’s nothing horrific – this is a Dreamspun Desires title, after all – but it’s a topic that’s I’m sensitive to, to varying degrees throughout the year. This time around, the issue didn’t bother me at all and I was able to listen to the entirety of the audiobook without any problems. Well, that’s not entirely true. I did have to pause the sexy times scene that occurs while Edge is painting because it was a bit too hot for me to listen to in public; yeah, that one tapped right into my voyeuristic nature and had me dropping everything I was doing just so I could listen to it closely… twice… okay, three times. As much as I enjoyed that happy ending, it doesn’t compare to Pat, Edge, and Emma’s happy ending, especially as envisioned by Edge. That really was a beautiful dream.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, John Solo brings a beautiful, storyteller voice to the Dreamspun Desires audiobooks. In Poppy’s Secret, he not only nails the men’s angst and frustration, but he does a wonderful job of conveying their fears, their hopes, and their love. I’m not sure how to preface this, but he also performs Emma’s voice in an interesting way. Rather than trying to feminize his voice and/or trying to make it sound younger or high pitched for a young girl, Solo seems to use a different cadence (I think that’s the right word) when Emma speaks. When Emma talks, there’s a sing-song quality to her speech that I think works far better than a pitch change would have. I don’t know if I’m making any sense, but I think people who listen to the audiobook will understand what I’m bumbling all over here. Needless to say, I really enjoyed Poppy’s Secret, loving the conflict and angst Grey forced Pat and Edge to navigate through to achieve their happy ending, as well as the way Solo brings each character to life.

John Solo has been a professional performer for 20 years, although this whole acting thing is a relatively new development. Prior to all of this he made his living as a salesman, engineer, security guard, mechanic, construction worker, purveyor of polyester dress suits… The list goes on ad nauseam, but he prefers to think of himself as an Itinerant Adventurer and lovable scoundrel! When not acting like someone else in front of a microphone, John prefers to indulge in the simpler things in life; games of chance, sword-fighting and traveling the world… all from the comforts of his own overstuffed couch.

Then again, he doesn’t expect someone as perfect as Florian to come into his life. To make sure Florian is all he seems and that their connection is genuine, Dieter keeps his title to himself.

But he isn’t the only one with a secret.

At a masquerade ball to celebrate the award, some of the masks fall away, but those that remain in place could destroy the love beginning to grow between them.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in the series. I have not read the first one yet, but as it involved a new couple, I did not feel I was lacking in background information. I really liked the setting and learning more about the way that porcelain studios operate.

Here we meet Florian, a talented artist who works in a porcelain studio. His brother works in the factory and is jealous of the attention Florian gets at work. They live with their depressed, widowed mother and teenage stepsister. This setup makes one think of Cinderella; and there is certainly a rather lovely element of fairy tale with how the story ends.

I loved the idea of Dieter all dressed up in his father's garb when he went bird watching. He has lots of lovely mannerisms which add to the sparkle in this story. He brings light to Florian's life, and even the revealing of the FEC secret brings them closer together. Their relationship may start off on a temporary basis, but Dieter is determined to do all he can to ensure that they have a happy ever after.

Smoldering Flame by Andrew Grey

Sometimes the strongest flames take the longest to ignite.

Firefighter Dean’s life revolves around his very ill son, Sammy. Caring for Sammy and working to make ends meet leave Dean time for little else, and romance isn’t something he can even consider—no matter how much he longs for someone special to join their family. Because money is tight, Dean couldn’t be more grateful to the photographer who does Sammy’s session free of charge.

After growing up in the foster care system, Marco knows how to rely on himself, and his hard work is about to pay off—he’s poised on the cusp of fame and success he could only have imagined as a lonely child. When Dean brings Sammy into Marco’s studio, Marco can see they’re struggling, and both the boy and his father stir Marco’s heart. The slow burn between the two men isn’t something either expected, but neither wants to lose the possibility of a loving future. With Dean’s dangerous and possibly life-threatening career and Marco’s demanding one, can romance and forever find a place to fit?

Sammy and Dean have had a hard go of it as of late. I loved Sammy's spirit and thought that he definitely made Dean seem more down to earth. I thought that Dean was somewhat aloof when it came to his job and family – he knew that he was amazing at his job, but also knew that if he made a mistake, it could cost him a lot more than his job.

Then when Dean and Sammy meet Marco, it changes the dynamic of everyone's lives. Dean does what any responsible parent would do and protects Sammy at all costs. However, he also is attracted to Marco in a way that he hasn't found himself in a while.

Throwing in Dean's strict and somewhat bigoted father, Dean and Marco have to overcome a few obstacles – the number one being their ability to communicate.

This story didn't carry with it the usual heat that I'm used to with Grey tales, but it did have a good sense of family in it.

Overall, this was just an okay story for me. I think that for my taste, it lacked chemistry between Dean and Marco, and even though Sammy helped them in that family-feeling department, I just didn't really connect with these characters.
