Smoldering Flame by Andrew Grey

Sometimes the strongest flames take the longest to ignite.

Firefighter Dean’s life revolves around his very ill son, Sammy. Caring for Sammy and working to make ends meet leave Dean time for little else, and romance isn’t something he can even consider—no matter how much he longs for someone special to join their family. Because money is tight, Dean couldn’t be more grateful to the photographer who does Sammy’s session free of charge.

After growing up in the foster care system, Marco knows how to rely on himself, and his hard work is about to pay off—he’s poised on the cusp of fame and success he could only have imagined as a lonely child. When Dean brings Sammy into Marco’s studio, Marco can see they’re struggling, and both the boy and his father stir Marco’s heart. The slow burn between the two men isn’t something either expected, but neither wants to lose the possibility of a loving future. With Dean’s dangerous and possibly life-threatening career and Marco’s demanding one, can romance and forever find a place to fit?

Sammy and Dean have had a hard go of it as of late. I loved Sammy's spirit and thought that he definitely made Dean seem more down to earth. I thought that Dean was somewhat aloof when it came to his job and family – he knew that he was amazing at his job, but also knew that if he made a mistake, it could cost him a lot more than his job.

Then when Dean and Sammy meet Marco, it changes the dynamic of everyone's lives. Dean does what any responsible parent would do and protects Sammy at all costs. However, he also is attracted to Marco in a way that he hasn't found himself in a while.

Throwing in Dean's strict and somewhat bigoted father, Dean and Marco have to overcome a few obstacles – the number one being their ability to communicate.

This story didn't carry with it the usual heat that I'm used to with Grey tales, but it did have a good sense of family in it.

Overall, this was just an okay story for me. I think that for my taste, it lacked chemistry between Dean and Marco, and even though Sammy helped them in that family-feeling department, I just didn't really connect with these characters.

Cleansing Flame by Andrew Grey

Life has been grinding Dayne Mills down almost for as long as he can remember. First he lost the love of his life in an accident that also left him with a permanent injury, and then his mother passed away a year later. When his house burns to the ground, it’s the last straw. He can’t take any more, and if it wasn’t for kind and handsome firefighter Lawson Martin offering him a hand up and a place to stay, he doesn’t know what he’d do. Dayne would love for his relationship with Lawson to evolve into something beyond charity, but he knows going after a man so far out of his league will only lead to yet more heartache. It’s best to just keep his mind on his research.

It’s that research that leads Dayne to an old student journal that not only provides clues to the Native American heritage Lawson has been searching for, but chronicles a century-old love story. The tale that unfolds might be just what Dayne and Lawson need to remind them that no matter how dark life becomes, love can find a way to shine through.

This is the second book in the series and I would recommend that you read the first one, as there are several characters that make an appearance.

In this story, you have someone who is somewhat broken and living with guilt. Dayne is living with survivor's guilt and despite his bright future, he doesn't really know what to do with it. He is working his way through a degree and in doing so, is able to take some specialized courses. While he was taking those courses, he was required to write a paper, which led him to the Indian School.

Lawson is a fellow firefighter of Morgan. He is a hard worker but a huge risk taker. He also enjoys extreme sports – skydiving, base jumping, etc. When he sees a cutie in the library one day, he definitely wants to know more; however, he doesn't really know how to get a new meeting. When he runs into the cutie from the library, it isn't an ideal situation. However, Lawson offers his home to Dayne.

What ensues is a love tale that is centuries old, entwined with Lawson and Dayne's love story. I really enjoyed how their story had a kind of mirror image to Lawson's grandfather's story. Both stories were sweet and kind, had a developed relationship, and even though they weren't tearing up the sheets the way some Grey books do, it was still a great combination.

Rekindled Flame by Andrew Grey

Firefighter Morgan has worked hard to build a home for himself after a nomadic childhood. When Morgan is called to a fire, he finds the family out front, but their tenant still inside. He rescues Richard Smalley, who turns out to be an old friend he hasn’t seen in years and the one person he regretted leaving behind.

Richard has had a hard life. He served in the military, where he lost the use of his legs, and has been struggling to make his way since coming home. Now that he no longer has a place to live, Morgan takes him in, but when someone attempts to set fire to Morgan’s house, they both become suspicious and wonder what’s going on.

Years ago Morgan was gutted when he moved away, leaving Richard behind, so he’s happy to pick things up where they left off. But now that Richard seems to be the target of an arsonist, he may not be the safest person to be around.

Morgan is loving being a firefighter. He works hard, takes risks, and would do anything for his co-workers. He is not much of a family person, but when he heads into a fire and sees the devastation on the family's faces, he can't help but feel something.

Richie is struggling. He was injured while being a Marine and he hasn't really come back from the war. He feels stuck. When he is caught in a fire and becomes disoriented, he thinks that his time is finally up.

Morgan and Richie were childhood friends and despite both being "different," Morgan had no choice but to move away. They never saw each other again until Morgan saved Richie from that horrible fire.

When fires begin to happen all over the place, Richie and Morgan hunt down whomever wants to hurt military men or families.

This is a sweet story of second chances, believing in yourself, and learning to take calculated risks for love. The relationship is fairly organic and the chemistry, while not super burning hot, is good chemistry that allows for a decent relationship.
