Hard Rules by Lisa Renee Jones

Wall Street meets the Sons of Anarchy in the smoldering, scorching first novel in the explosively sexy new Dirty Money series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.

How bad do you want it?

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family's business dealings legitimate. His reckless and ruthless brother, Derek wants to keep Brandon Enterprises cemented in lies, deceit, and corruption. But the harder Shane fights to pull the company back into the light, the darker he has to become. Then he meets Emily Stevens, a woman who not only stirs a voracious sexual need in him, but becomes the only thing anchoring him between good and evil.

Emily is consumed by Shane, pushed sexually in ways she never dreamed of, falling deeper into the all-encompassing passion that is this man. She trusts him. He trusts her, but therein lies the danger. Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret that could that destroy them both.

Being a corporate attorney is all Shane Brandon wanted to do, and doing it in New York was a bonus.

Now he is back in Denver, trying to save his family’s company and making it legal, but his brother wants to keep it dirty. And with his father dying of cancer and he is not going to just hand over the family business to Shane, he wants his sons to fight over it, which is really weird to me. But as his father is dying and Derek is trying to take over the company and keep it with dirty business, Shane wants to make it all clean and legal. The more Shane learns about his father and brother’s dealings, the more he will have to cross that line into the dark to make things right.

Emily Stevens seems to be the one that keeps Shane in the light. But she is a mystery to him. When he asks about her past, she tells him something, but is it the truth? When she meets Shane, there is a connection that neither of them know what to do with but can’t deny. When he offers her one night, can they both live with that? Will she tell him about her past and why she is in Denver? Who is she hiding from, and will it help Shane or destroy him?

This story is full of lies, betrayal, deceit, and corruption – and that is just from Shane’s family. Lisa Renee Jones knows how to write a story that will draw you in and keep you hanging on every word until the very end and leave you wanting, no needing more. I can’t wait for more, I need to know what happens between Shane and Emily. So sit back and enjoy another beginning to a great series.

4.5 Stars

I have to say that having read a lot of Lisa Renee Jones books, I was excited to jump into this new series. However, I almost put it down before getting very far into it. The beginning just didn't grab me and we are so wrapped up in the craziness of Shane's family that I didn't have any connection to anything in the story. However, once we got to where Emily is in the story more and we get to see another side to Shane, I was sunk. It snagged me and I had to read more, just like the other stories I've read by this author. So I don't know if it was simply me getting into a new series or what, but I can say that I'm glad I didn't put it down when I really wanted to early on.

I have to say the way Shane is described is FANTASTIC. He is so suave and sexy and handsome there is absolutely no doubt of it with the words used. While many may try for this description for their characters, Jones did it in a way that you can't deny is hot, even if you don't like men in suits.

I can't wait for more on this series and although I loathe cliffhangers (and boy does this one have one) I still loved the book.

Emily meets Shane at a chance encounter in a coffee shop. A second chance encounter has Shane taking Emily to dinner followed by a one-night stand, which we get to witness in explicit detail. What happens next is where the story starts to take off. The politics of Shane's family and the family business really sucked me in. I found some parts of this story a little slow and other times I was racing through the pages to see what would happen next.

Hard Rules is a sexy and sophisticated romance and drama. This is a solid start for the new series, Dirty Money, it was very good and I was left wanting more. Hopefully the wait for the next instalment won't be too long.
