Perfectly Imperfect by Harper Sloan

Mirror, mirror ... who's the fairest of them all?

I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn't grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all ‘mean girls.’

And those mean girls were right – it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world – and I knew the answer would never be me.

The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.

The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.

Well, that's definitely not Willow Tate.

No. That will never be me.

Because I'm completely imperfect.

And ... I hate myself.

I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

“Are you nervous right now?”

I nod.

“Tell me why.” His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him. To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.

“I’m not perfect,” I whisper.

“And neither am I, Willow. I don’t want perfect. What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake. Perfect isn’t achievable naturally. No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”

I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.

“No, let me finish. There isn’t beauty in perfection. It’s as fake as the image the word projects. Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute. When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better. To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there. You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”

When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing. How am I supposed to respond to that?

“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.

“Yes, Kane. Nerves or not, I do.”

“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”

He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of. His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue. I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system. I’m all in.

“Didn't anyone ever tell you that life starts at the end of your comfort zone?”

When Willow's mom died in a car accident it left her with her stepfather and half-sister. Two people who thrived on making Willow miserable. She was never good enough, smart enough, perfect enough for them. When Willow's two most embarrassing moments are witnessed by the sexy actor, Kane Masters, she horrified.

Kane has been unknowingly looking for what has been missing in his life. When his eyes meet Willow's for the third time he knows there is something there worth exploring. Can Willow drop the walls she's built around herself her entire life to let Kane in? Can she trust him? Will Kane be able to make Willow see what he sees when he looks at her?

“You see the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”

Harper Sloan hit the nail on the head with this one. She writes about the insecurities that most woman have. Whether you are a size two or a size twenty-two. She gets it right. Perfectly Imperfect is a love story but not the kind you think. It's a story about loving yourself. Being the person you want to be. Yes it's a love story between two characters, but she couldn’t love him until she learned to love herself.

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed 'Estrogen Ocean', much to her husband’s chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero--the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn't take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.

“I couldn’t sleep. I meant to go to the kitchen and then I ended up here because I wanted...” His reaction cuts like his anger. “Just never mind.” I try to move around him but his hands press to the wall beside me, caging me, and now I’m angry. “Are we doing this again? Don’t bully me. My stupid flashbacks are doing a fine job of that on their own. I said I’m sorry. Just let me go back to my room.”

“You wanted what?”

“I wanted you to do what you swore you could,” I blurt, having nothing to lose when everything is already gone.

“Only I don’t want you to fuck me until I can’t remember my name. I want you to fuck me until I stop thinking about that man and the gun. Because you were right. Memories are the enemies that never die. But I know you don’t want—”

His hand slides under my hair and he drags me to him, my hand flattening on the hard wall of his chest. “I do want. So fucking bad it’s killing me.”

My palm is directly over his heart, and I can feel it racing, the air around us crackling with barely contained passion. “I don’t need a hero to save my virtue tonight. I need you. So please. Fuck me and then fuck with my head so no one else can. Let me choose my own sins.”

He is stone, unmoving, his body steel, his expression unreadable, the sexual tension crackling between us. “You want sin, sweetheart,” he says. “I’ll give you sin.” His mouth closes down on mine, his tongue licking into my mouth, wicked with demand, and I can taste his hunger, his need. A deep, aching need I want to fill.

Denial is a spin off from the Inside Out series which I loved. During the Inside Out series we wonder what happened to Ella. Now we get her story. Parts of it were interesting and action packed. Other times we spent too much time in Ella's head and I wanted to get on with the story. Her thoughts became repetitive.

The romance with Kayden was good but not great. I didn't really feel a deep connection. I think if we had Kayden's point of view I would have connected more with the romance.

I connected enough with the story and the mystery of what happen to Ella that when we arrive at the cliff hanger I wanted more. I look forward to reading the next installment.

I have been dying for Ella's story so I was SOOO excited to finally get it. This was an interesting take on what it feels like to lose your memory and be incredibly lost in a world you don't know with no one you recognize or trust.

I found it quite interesting for the most part, however, there were some times where I found it was dragged out a bit and became repetitive and a bit boring.

The romance in this story I found sexy and yet frustrating at times. However, the angst and craving was well played and thick throughout the story.

All in all, it was a great start to the new series and I can't wait for more.

My Sassy Settler by Maggie Ryan

What should be a wonderful new adventure for newlyweds Wyatt and Agatha Wilcox is not turning out quite the way they'd hoped. Wyatt's dreams of building a new life with the girl he'd met and wed while traveling on the Oregon Trail are turning into a nightmare. He loves his wife dearly but has no idea how to reach her.

Agatha knows she isn't the wife that Wyatt dreamed of. Despite her deep love for this man, she just finds it impossible to cast aside all the words and damnation she'd been hearing from her stepfather for the past year. Her hope that she'd find a fresh start as Mrs. Wilcox, and her excitement at the idea of settling into their first home on a ranch they're going to help build, are overshadowed by the fact that her Ma is no longer with her, and the knowledge that she is not the pure and innocent woman Wyatt deserves. She knows she is a sinner; a woman too weak and too selfish to let the man she loves go free.

Dangers in this newly settled land aren't limited to the bears and wild cats that roam the forests and mountains of the Willamette Valley. The deep cold of winter is coming, and the ranch's inhabitants need to prepare. It is with the help of friends, their partners in building The Double R Ranch—affectionately known as The Rose Ranch to its founders—that things come to a head between Agatha and Wyatt, and their first steps toward a new life are taken. Will the couple find their way past the hatred spewed by a self- proclaimed preacher to find that, together, they have the strength and the love to build the lives they each had envisioned?

With patience and love, will Agatha learn to trust that this man would never let her down? What will Wyatt think when he discovers that, beneath her fear, he not only wed a wonderful woman, but he has wed his own Sassy Settler?

My Sassy Settler is the second book in the Willamette Wives series, and also continues the story of Anna and Richard, Charity and James, and other characters first introduced in Maggie Ryan's bestselling book: His Passionate Pioneer.

Mary Jo☆☆☆☆
Agatha has been terrorized by a stepfather who used religion to condemn others for their actions. When Agatha meets Wyatt on the wagon trail, they fall in love and marry and settle in Willamette Valley. However, the cruel words of her stepfather still haunt her. She believes that if she enjoys anything or anyone in her life, she'll be condemned to hell, which makes being intimate with her husband difficult.

Wyatt is beside himself, not knowing what to do to ease Agatha's fears. He knows that her stepfather was horrible, but he doesn't realize just how much Agatha has suffered at his hands.

After running away to a neighboring farm, Wyatt decides to spank Aggie and to her surprise, it doesn't send her running in the opposite direction.

Through mutual respect and love, they slowly begin to create a life together, with a sexual chemistry neither can deny.

I have always loved the power of words and getting lost in another world. Bringing characters to life in a book so that you feel you know them is something I love doing. When not writing, I love reading curled up in a chair with huge mug of coffee.

I write mainly historical, age-play, fantasy & Victorian spanking romances.

Denying Ecstasy was another super HOT story (#3) in the Guardians of the Realms series. Beware: the hotness of these stories MAY affect your real life...one MAY find themselves pregnant after consuming this series ;) READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Dorian and Rain...these guys are like Oil and Water! Dorian is denying the mating call, but how long can he hold out? Rain, the mortal Mageia, is plagued with dreams she can't avoid. The back and forth certainly built the anticipation...and when they finally come together? BE READY… It's explosive, and perfect.

The Guardians are so damn Sexy, Possessive, and Alpha – there's just no way to avoid loving them. Not to be “controlled,” the women are all just as strong and sassy and have their own strengths.

I'm really excited to find out where this series is really going. Where is Cynthia? Why are the Guardians finding mates now? WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON?
I just can't stop reading now!

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is a fabulous series, which perfectly combines a huge plot with instances of hot, hot romance (usually with an element of denial to fuel the journey!). I am reading one a week, due to other reading (and work) commitments, but if I could just get a really bad cold and spend a few duvet days, I would definitely be reading these books straight through. I think what I particularly like is that the women are strong, independent thinking individuals. The Guardians are all we would all imagine them to be, and a lot more besides – marrying brains and brawn in good measure, with a huge hunk of unbelievably hot and sexy!

As in previous stories we see the fight of desire match the inevitable draw of love – and wow, when finally these two get together ... I feared for my internal temperature gauge – did I want to be discovered overheated with that on the page? At the same time the bigger picture starts to fill more and more, and questions need answers ... roll on my time to read the next installment.

So, my advice is start at the beginning and treat yourself to a central heating like no other!

Setta Jay is the author of the popular Guardians of the Realms Series. She's garnered attention and rave reviews in the paranormal romance world for writing smart, slightly innocent heroines and intense alpha males. She loves writing stories that incorporate a strong plot with a heavy dose of heat. Her influences include Judith McNaught who she feels writes a smart heroine to perfection, Gena Showalter, Maya Banks and Lora Leigh.  You can often find her writing compared to JR Ward, but if you are a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood be warned that Setta Jay’s novels are more erotic in nature.

Born a California girl, she currently resides in Idaho with her husband of ten plus years who she describes as incredibly sexy and supportive, even when it’s Willy Wednesday on Twitter. ;)

Steal Me by Lauren Layne Blog Tour

IN HOT PURSUIT

Being a cop might be in Anthony Moretti's blood, but protecting and serving the city of New York has always been more than just the family business. If that means his love life stays locked up, well then that's just another sacrifice made in the line of duty. That is, until he sets eyes on the gorgeous new waitress at The Darby Diner and suddenly Anthony's morning coffee is leaving him a whole lot more hot and bothered than usual.

Though waitressing at The Darby isn't exactly Maggie Walker's dream job, it pays the bills and gives her time to work on her novel. Now if only she could stop fantasizing about gorgeous Anthony Moretti every time he sits down at her table, she'd really be in great shape. But when he needs her help identifying a criminal threatening The Darby—and Maggie recognizes her ex-husband—she fears her fresh start might be a pipe dream. Faster than a New York minute, Maggie and Anthony find themselves in one perilous pursuit that only gets hotter with each and every rule-breaking kiss.

Maggie Walker had become their default waitress at the diner back when their old waitress Helen had retired a couple months ago. And while Anthony missed Helen and her too-strong floral perfume, he had to admit that Maggie was the better to look at.

She had a wholesome, girl-next-door look that appealed to him mightily. Brown hair that was always on the verge of slipping out of its ponytail, wide, compelling green eyes that made you want to unload all your darkest secrets.

Curvy. Hips that were exactly right, breasts that were even better.

And then there was that smile. It managed to be both shy and friendly, which was handy because he was betting it was very hard for even the most impatient customers to get annoyed at her.

But Anth didn’t buy the doing-my-best routine, and seeing as she was dealing with an entire table of observant cops, he was betting the rest of his family wouldn’t buy it either.

Then Luc leaned forward and gave Maggie an easy grin. “Don’t even worry about it, Mags. Didn’t even notice I was running low!”

Luc’s girlfriend, Ava, smoothly reached up one hand and swatted him on the back of the head, the gesture so graceful, so practiced, that she never once sloshed her coffee. Anthony nearly smiled.

To say that Ava Sims was good for his little brother would be an understatement. The big brother in Anthony would be forever grateful that the gorgeous reporter had helped Luc vanquish his demons. But the big brother in Anth was also grateful that Ava helped keep his younger brother in line. Or at least tried to.

He rolled his eyes as Luc shot a guilty smile at his girlfriend, but even as he slid his mug towards the edge of the table so Maggie wouldn’t have to reach as far.

Then Anth watched in utter dismay as Vincent did the same.

Vincent. The guy who’d practically devoted his life to being perverse, was trying to make life easier for their inept waitress.

Un-fucking-believable.

Anthony was so busy trying to figure out what about the frazzled waitress turned his brothers into a bunch of softies that he didn’t think to move his own mug to be more convenient, and Maggie had to lean all the way in to top off his cup.

It was a feat that their old waitress could have handled readily, but Helen had retired months ago and for reasons that Luc didn’t understand, the rest of the Moretti family had embraced Maggie as Helen’s replacement.

Anthony didn’t realize that his mug had overflowed until scalding coffee dripped onto his thigh.

“Son of a—”

He caught himself before he could finish the expletive, grabbing a large handful of napkins from the silver dispenser and trying to soak up the puddle of coffee on his jeans before it burned his skin.

“Nice, Anth,” Elena said, tossing another bunch of napkins at him. Like this was his fault.

“Oh my God,” Maggie said, her voice horrified. “I’m so sorry, Officer…”

“It’s Captain,” he snapped, his eyes flicking up and meeting hers.

Silence descended over the table until Vincent muttered douchebag around a coughing fit.

But Anthony refused to feel chagrined. The woman had waited on the family every Sunday for weeks; one would think she could get his title right. To say nothing of mastering the art of pouring coffee.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is the second in a series – and I would recommend that you read Frisk Me first, as the Moretti family dynamics continue on from that story. I love the themes of family and service which underpin this series – and the fun that a close family can have with its members!

Anthony has clearly had some major issues which have made him a devoted policeman, but also ensure that he avoids relationships at all costs. So it is great fun watching him succumb to the charms of Maggie. I loved how we get to see him crumble under the power of a (clumsy near him) waitress. It is cleverly both hot, and yet sweet. For me the level of drama about the crime spree was just right. The book succeeds in being a romance with a crime plot – rather than sex shoed into a crime story, if that makes sense.

Thanks Ms. Layne for another great read.
