Penn is the fun-loving womanizer of his group of friends. He is also a hardworking carpenter who is always willing to lend a hand or pick up a job. When he is about to take his first vacation in two years, Penn is interrupted when his boss call in a favor. Despite knowing he has earned his vacation, Penn just razzes his boss and says he’ll help out.

Avery is finding herself. She knows that where she’s come from is definitely not where she wants to be. She has fond memories of Dogwood Lane and being near her aunt, so she picks herself up and heads there. While working at her aunt’s salon, she runs in to Penn... again. He doesn’t recognize her, and she isn’t sure if she’s upset or embarrassed that she was so easy to forget.

Avery is keeping a secret from Penn and Penn is trying to woo a woman who knows all of his tricks. Can they see past the walls that they each have in order to climb over and find happiness?

This is a sweet, semi-second-chance romance that has hilarious characters and friendships that would make anyone jealous. I really enjoyed this story and hope we get to see more of them soon.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the third book in the series, and both the previous couples feature in the story. You could start here and go back if you want to, I don't think it would spoil too much for you. You will understand the dynamics of Dogwood Lane a little better if you are up to date.

Avery has come back to Dogwood Lane to start afresh. Her life in LA was shallow thanks to her famous parents and everyone wanting something from her because of them. She visited her aunt there as a teen, but since then has been too wrapped up in the banal – but no more! So when the beautiful Penn comes into her aunt's hairdresser's and starts to chat her up – with no memory of their first encounter several years ago – she is not interested. Not. At. All. She left LA to get away from the shallow hookup, and Penn has a reputation for exactly that.

Penn works in construction, enjoys spending his free time enjoying female company and avoiding all manner of serious. He had a really unhappy childhood; his mother suffered from addiction and his father was abusive and vindictive. So really, he has no intentions of settling down in case he is like his dad – which, yes, completely makes him a darling guy!

There are so many lovely bits in this book, little details which make you really only want the best for both of them. They definitely deserve each other, it is just them who need to understand that... and ideally at the same time. Locke makes sure that we feel the tension, cheer them along, and then smile the biggest smile when it finally all works out.

Very enjoyable read, I recommend it to you.

I had been fantasizing about the time I finally got Oz to bend me over his knee and spank me. It was during Yoshi's promotion party. A few months after we'd gotten Dmitry back. Dad promoted Yoshi to Mr. C. It wasn't unusual to have two agents with the same rank/codename. It happened frequently in the lower ranks, but in upper management it was rare. This led to Yoshi being called Mr. C2 around HQ to avoid any confusion.

Dad wanted Yoshi to start learning more about management as soon as possible. He still wasn't planning on stepping down for another few years, but he wanted to spend more time with Nigel than over paperwork. No one could blame him. I took the opportunity to get a little tipsy and tease Daddy.

We were in the main dining hall and the music was going, drinks were flowing. I enlisted the help of Karl and Ricky to add a dash of jealousy to my tease. I got them both stacks of ৳10 banknotes. The pink bills were perfect for stuffing in places they shouldn't be. One of the DJs from The Black Dragon was there, and I had conspired with him earlier in the week to play a song for me. I practiced for weeks the routine I was going to do. I wasn't the best dancer, but I could shake my butt. I was determined to Magic Mike the fuck out of Daddy and seduce him to my bed.

The song right before my song was almost over, and I climbed up on the table in the center of the hall. Oz was talking to Dad and Nigel and not paying any attention to me. That was about to change. I had on a clean white tank top and my black break away jogging pants with dark green briefs with white trim underneath. I had thought about wearing one of my lace booty shorts underneath, but I didn't want all the other guards and agents to see what belonged to Daddy. I knew there was a fine line between naughty and disrespect.

The beat started slow and hard. My hips popped and my body rolled. My eyes locked on the hulking form still across the room. Whistles rent the air. My body dropped to the table, and I ground against the surface, popping my butt up and down. More people gathered around the table, both men and women, cheering and shouting. Pink, blue, and green bills spilled across the table. Daddy was standing at the end of the table with his arms crossed over his chest. They bulged and flexed under the baby blue shirt he wore. His hair was down, but half the side was braided against his skull in several braids and then left loose. There were a few braids in his luscious beard. He was a Viking god with black eyeliner and blue sparkled eye shadow that matched his t-shirt.

I hopped back up to my feet and whipped my tank top off, tossing it wherever. I rolled and thrust my way down the table. Daddy's gaze burned through me the whole way down. I beat slow and spread my legs wide, crouching low as my hips continued to roll. I put my hands on my thighs and gripped the fabric tightly. I licked my lips and stared Daddy right in his crystalline blue eyes. We both knew what was coming next, and he slowly shook his head.

I thrusted up hard and ripped my pants off in one smooth motion as the music crested. The cheers got louder, and I twirled around. I bent over and twerked my squat booty right in Daddy's face. I knew he wouldn't miss the "Daddy's" spelled out in white letters across my ass. Before I knew what was happening, I was spun around and flung over Daddy's shoulder. Whistles and cheers followed us as Oz almost jogged out of the hall.

I think you should read the first book in the series to really enjoy this book. I absolutely loved the first book and I loved this one too. Connor and Asbjorn are amazing. The Daddy/boy aspect was a little different from the norm and I liked it. The author has a way of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat and falling in love all at the same time. This series keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for the next book.

“Just face it, Knox. But she couldn't go back home and let her parents see just how her life turned out. After her husband died, she is left with his bad debt, her ruined reputation, a failing horse ranch, a chaotic life, and a need to never trust anyone again.

Jack Sutton has one last thing he has to do before he is to go back home and run the family ranch. He was only supposed to help her for six months, to turn things around. Not fall in love with her, that kinda throws a wrench in his plans.

While Tatum/Tate is learning how to run a horse ranch, she is also learning how to trust a man again. And Jack is seeing a wild side in Tate he never thought she possessed. The more time they spend together, the more the feelings blossom. But the problems and secrets will drive them apart.

Will Jack tell Tate the truth before she learns it on her own? Will he be able to help her save the ranch? Can they get past the lies and secrets that he is keeping?

I loved everything about this story, and it is heartbreaking at times and even makes you laugh. Reading a K. Bromberg story will make you feel like you are right there in the story and that is one of the reasons I love her writing style. So grab this one and enjoy it!

When he realizes the uphill battle they are both running, Jack steps in to help Tate figure out how to fight and find herself again.

With a corrupt town, shady business dealers, unsupportive family, and their own attraction to fight, Jack and Tate will have to find their own truth.

I think my largest issue with the story was the family aspect. There was so much that could've come from that perspective, but you're just kind of left in limbo. Jack and Tate have to work hard for their love and relationship, and it made them that much more relatable. I really enjoyed watching them figure out how to trust, love, and find their own way through all of the muck that life throws at you.

“What do you want?” Knox says with a sneer as I ease in the football locker room. Cold eyes flick over my cheer skirt then move up and land on the hollow of my throat. This is a very engaging read... in fact, I read it in one go, finishing it at 4am (I do suffer from insomnia, but even for me that was extreme!).

Ava has been done a great wrong, but her personal situation means that she has to go back to the place where her attacker/rapist is also at school. She has such a level head, but such a heavy heart and soul. I thought she was described brilliantly, the switching from having a happy moment with her brother, to cringing in on herself as she has to deal with the bullying and intimidation. But she does have friends, and a (not so) secret admirer. She and we can guess pretty quickly who that is, but there is so much tied up in what happened, what has been hidden, and what needs to come to light, that divided loyalties screw with what seems like a great thing.

Whilst this is set in a high school, both the leads have been through the school of hard knocks and they are old far beyond their years. It makes for some interesting conundrums as Ava and Knox steer their way through the needs of their family and the desire to have a loving relationship.

I love how things develop, and the ending is happy, but not in the way that one might have expected. Very satisfying read; thank you, Ilsa Madden-Mills.

Spoiler-Free Review

Out of the Attic is the tenth installment in the Dollanganger series, aka Flowers in the Attic. While the latest installment in the long-standing series, Out of the Attic is the second in a series of prequels, events taking place long before those in the original debut with Flowers in the Attic.

Q/A to help V.C. Andrews' readers:

Can a reader pick up this novel up as a standalone without confusion? No.

Does the reader have to read all nine previous books before diving into Out of the Attic? No.

Suggestion/recommendation for those who don't want to read such a long-standing series, or wish to read the prequels before diving into the 'current' storyline, start with Beneath the Attic.

Did V.C. Andrews herself write this novel? No. Andrew Neiderman is the writer who authored the novel, as well as most novels published under the V.C. Andrews' brand over the past 30+ years. If you enjoyed novels written within that time frame, then it was Neiderman's voice you enjoyed.

As a fan of the historical genre, I don't qualify myself as an expert. However, I should stress that if historical accuracy in word-usage/household items/setting is a major pet peeve of yours, steer clear.

The original Corrine is the narrator of the novel, piecing events in history together to complete the puzzle that is the Dollanganger series. Showcasing her life at the hands of her husband, Garland, while featuring Malcolm's childhood. As a woman in the late 1800s, Corrine had little option on how to live her life, which led to dark consequences.

In classic dark horror gothic, to the backdrop of the oppressive Foxworth Hall, expect taboo subject matter, episodes of violence, sexual assault, and being held hostage by choices you've made because you have little choice in the matter.

My biggest complaint is simply how Corrine's voice shifted throughout the novel, not truly authentically hers. As a sheltered young woman in an era where her worldview would have been narrow, sometimes her voice was that of a twenty-year-old, but other times it was that of someone closer to fifty or sixty.

While I believe Out of the Attic to be a worthy addition to the Dollanganger series, that doesn't necessarily mean I was totally engrossed. A mix of reader's block, the historical accuracy errors, and the narrative age shifting, I did struggle to finish the novel.

4.5 stars of absolute goodness

I am delighted to have had the opportunity to read this first book in a new series – and will definitely be looking out for future installments. After all, at some point Frisco needs to find 'the one' too (please!).

Young Presley made a bad mistake a decade ago when he fell for Jared, who paid him lots of attention, except in public, as he was married. Dying in a car crash, Jared left Press deep in a rut of grief and despair. His best friend Frisco has finally persuaded him to go to a grief group, where his whole life is turned right way up – thanks to fellow member Nate.

Of course, there are some pretty big mountains of truth facing both men, as they find a way to let go of their grief and anger, and learn that no one is blameless. Their immediate attraction is both a blessing and a curse, as both of them need more than a hook-up, but aren't really sure they want the danger of opening themselves up to feelings. Nate's previous solution was meaningless hook-ups and Presley's was absolute celibacy (for 6 whole years!), so they need to work out how to behave now.

I loved that Press ran his own antique shop, and enjoyed the details, which were just enough to be interesting but never too much. It gave us a good impression of Press being his own man, successful enough, even if not moneyed. He is, however, lonely and in need of living. Nate comes from money and is a successful lawyer – he is also lonely but needs to live less and love more.

A really good story with some very steamy scenes, as well as some difficult decisions having to be made. Thank you, Felice Stevens, and I really am looking forward to book two.

I stayed up all night just so I could finish this book. I didn't want to go to sleep before finding out how it ended. The author has a way for bringing you into the story, so you feel like you are living it at the same time the characters are. Presley and Nate both have issues to work out, each one needing to move forward but having a hard time. I immediately fell in love with Nate but had a hard time liking Presley at first, due to my personal feelings about cheating. This book grabbed me from the first chapter and didn't want to let me go. There were some steamy scenes and lots of pulling on the heartstrings. This book was a great start to a new series, and I can't wait to see who is in the next book.

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending around the corner, my characters have to work for it, however. Like life in NYC, nothing comes easy and that includes love.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be a few bumps along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.
