Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
He Sees You When You're Sleeping is a darker take on a Christmas. It's a super quick read, but it really is filled with so much emotion. Kris has done a horrible thing in his past and is made to walk the earth, protecting children and bringing presents on Christmas Eve to those that believe. The number of those who believe in Christmas and Santa drop drastically year after year, so Kris is met with a lonely existence. He meets Jack when he is ten, in an abusive foster home. Kris knows he needs to protect him and does repeatedly for years. When he starts to care for the man he met twenty-five years prior, things change.

I enjoyed seeing this take on Christmas and Santa. Even though it's a novella, you can connect with the characters instantly. I wondered where the author would take me with this read, but was pleasantly surprised at the ending. Highly recommend this super-quick darker read!!

Abstract Love by Sara Dobie Bauer Blog Tour

I hate Sam Shelby. So why do I want to kiss him?

Sam never expected to move back to Cleveland.
Donovan never expected to be attracted to a man.
Well, shit happens.

After high school, Sam Shelby moved to New York. Eight years later, he returns to Cleveland and lands a job at the best ad firm in town. It would be the perfect gig, if his boss weren’t such an ass.

After his wife leaves, Donovan Cooper questions everything. The arrival of a young, arrogant, gifted graphic designer at Donovan’s firm is the last straw.

Tempers flare over office gossip, and following a nasty argument and scathing kiss, Donovan flails away from heterosexuality while Sam struggles to keep his “no relationship” rule intact.

Despite ugly socks, fiery fights, and their best intentions to not fall in love, these bullheaded coworkers can’t deny their chemistry. Donovan seeks happiness while Sam seeks success, but is there room for more?

Abstract Love is an enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy with an age gap.

Excerpt

Donovan sifted through a few hand-drawn logos on the desk and froze when he found a crudely drawn sketch of himself. Sam must have done it during a meeting at some point, capturing Donovan’s faux hawk, wide jaw, and severe expression.

Jesus, was this what other people saw when they looked at him? Did he really look so miserable?

“Make yourself at home?”

Donovan dropped the picture and stood straight at the sound of Sam’s voice.

He leaned against the doorframe, with one ankle crossed over the other.

“It’s really bullshit when people say that, you know?” Sam said. “Make yourself at home. No one actually wants their friends to take off their pants, drink all their beer, and binge The Great British Bake Off.” He paused. “What are you doing in my office?”

“I didn’t mean to snoop.”

The office door closed as he stepped inside. “Sure you did, or you wouldn’t be in here, so what’s up?”

Sam circled the desk, so Donovan circled the other way, although he noticed it was true what coworkers said: Sam did smell good—like clean laundry and cedar. “I think we started off on the wrong foot.”

Sam snort laughed and flipped through some files on his desk. “More like wrong continent, man.” When he found what he was looking for, he tapped the file’s corner against his palm. “I can handle guys like you, you know.”

Donovan shifted back on his heels. “Guys like me?”

“Hmm. Corporate assholes. All you see are dollar signs. You take no pleasure in your work. Advertising is money to you, not art, but without the artists, there wouldn’t be advertising, so…” He sucked his cheeks into his mouth, a momentary fish face.

Donovan wanted to tell him it wasn’t true. Donovan loved art.

He used to love art.

Sam continued, “I know I look like a six-foot-two Disney princess, but you’re not gonna rattle me.” To prove his point, Sam got right up in Donovan’s personal space until Donovan took a step back. Again, he was not used to dealing with someone his own height. “And I’m right about the Great Lakes ad campaign. If you’d pull your head out of your ass, maybe you’d notice.” He turned away abruptly.

“Sam.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.” Ouch, that hurt coming out.

Sam’s rebuttal: “Prove it.”

“Excuse me?”

He rested a hand on the desk and cocked his hip out—the very picture of young attitude. “Listen to me in meetings.”

“I was listening.”

“Nope.” He shook his head and ran a hand through his unkempt, unprofessional hair. “No, you were hearing. I need you to listen. There’s a difference. And I know I’m just some fucking kid to you, but I ruled the New York City advertising scene. I know what I’m doing, Donovan, so let me do it.”

“Fine.” He’d had enough. He’d apologized, okay, so he’d done his Monica-enforced duty. He didn’t owe Sam anything else.

He didn’t run for the door, but he definitely moved with speed.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is an absolute gem of a book. It deals with so many issues, and in such a cool way. I learned a lot about the workings of an ad agency, the complexities of creatives mixed with suits. The sadness of a creative who allows promotions to make him a suit, and the jealousy at the new arrival of a bright new thing. Of the confidence of youth and talent, the new world where being different is celebrated rather than disrespected. But at its heart, it is a love story between two very unlikely-matched guys.

Donovan, beaten down by his job, his failed marriage, and the betrayal of his best friend with his soon to be ex-wife. Sam, newly arrived from New York City, graphic design genius, exuberant dresser, and open to love in any form. See, I told you an unlikely mix, but somehow the author makes the transition from enemies to lovers, from grumpy to enlightened, a journey which it is impossible not be entirely entranced.

Enjoy!

Angie – ☆☆☆☆
Holy hotness! Age-gap, enemies to lovers, first time gay, this book has it all. I loved the dynamics between the main characters, it just worked, inside and outside the bedroom. I wasn't into all the marketing mumbo jumbo, I just wanted the relationship aspects. Very good book with some creativeness in the bedroom.

Handsome Death by Sara Dobie Bauer Release Blitz

I'm not hunting him; I'm protecting him.
At least, that's what I tell myself.
In New York City, a beautiful creature like Tristan Clement should not be walking the streets alone, and I'm the perfect vampire to watch his back.
But what if keeping him safe isn't enough anymore? What if I want to touch? And taste?
I need him. But I've never needed anyone.

__________

In a world where paranormal creatures live amongst us and must follow certain laws, living life as a dangerous loner works for vampire Ethan. Inhabiting his gleaming apartment, wearing his designer suits, jetting around the world as a fanged killer-for-hire, Ethan does it all alone.

That is, until he literally runs into Tristan. Tristan, who is clearly trouble wrapped in skinny jeans and an oversized sweater. Tristan, with his shock of angelic blond curls. Tristan, who plays piano more beautifully than the old masters—and Ethan would know; he saw Beethoven.

Tristan is gorgeous, a little sassy, and irresistible. Also, Ethan is horrified to note, Tristan has no idea how incredibly tempting he is to things that go bump in the night.

Overcome by the urge to keep Tristan safe, Ethan begins to... well, stalk is such a strong word. What starts as an obsession quickly becomes something more, something that Ethan needs. And to his surprise, Tristan seems to need him, too...

This darkly romantic tale delivers steamy passion and a happily ever after. Be advised that Handsome Death includes explicit m/m content, stalking, mentions of past abuse, and graphic violence.

I feel an itch on the back of my neck so glance behind me, and indeed, there he is, the blond kid from yesterday. I must have caught him staring, because as soon as I turn to look, he ducks his head and goes back to reading.

I shouldn’t approach him. Granted, he’s stunning. Most vampires would love to get their hands on his bare skin, but I’m not one for picking up humans outside of blood clubs. I’m cautious. Vampires can get in a lot of trouble for biting a human without consent. Like sentenced-to-death trouble. The humans at blood clubs know what they’re getting into. This guy? He looks like a puppy in need of a cuddle. He has no idea what a vampire could do to him.

Maybe some reconnaissance is in order. Just to, you know, make sure he’s all right after yesterday’s altercation.

Or something.

I’m lying to myself. This isn’t a protective detail in Serbia, this is me away from combat too long and bored in New York.

Fuck it.

He sits at one of the heavy wooden tables with the lid off his cup. His hair hangs halfway over his forehead, tilted down over a paperback, but I can still see his mouth, the way he chews his bottom lip, making it pinker, fuller.

I walk right up to his table. I don’t wait for him to look up. I don’t wait for an invitation. I just sit.

He startles at my arrival. His eyes widen and stare at me.

“Who are you?” I ask. I’ve always been really good at openings.

“Uhh.” His forehead wrinkles.

I drum my fingertips on the table. “I’ve never seen you in here before.”

“You saw me yesterday.” He folds the top corner of a page in his paperback: Dracula by Bram Stoker. “You saved my ass yesterday.”

“Before yesterday,” I reply.

He sighs. “A Starbucks bought out my favorite coffee shop, so I guess this is now my favorite coffee shop. Buy local.” He scoops his messenger bag off the floor and shoves the book inside.

The kid has one of those runway model faces—gaunt if not so beautiful, sharp and yet soft. Freckles? Zero. Wait, no, he’s got just a smattering that you would only notice close-up… or with well-trained vampiric eyes. He has no shadow of recently shaved facial hair, and that’s no surprise based on the white-blond of his hair. He must moisturize those lips because nobody’s mouth just naturally looks like the perfect mixture of velvet and silk.

He sighs again, louder. “You’re staring at me.”

No, I’m studying him—checking out his vulnerable areas, which are pretty much everywhere considering he’s so thin and fragile-looking.

As for everyone else in the coffee shop, they’re looking at the kid like they want to take him to bed. I catch a girl at the next table over gawking. A big dude with a beard stands in line to our right, his mouth hanging half open as he admires.

“Everyone is staring at you,” I respond.

His pale cheeks burn bright red as he swoops his bag onto his shoulder and stands. “No, that’s…” He shakes his head. “Ha, no.” He doesn’t say goodbye. He even leaves his coffee, half-consumed on the table. He up and abandons me without a word, but I do watch him go—as does half of Inky Grounds.

Once he disappears out into the early October morning, I turn back around and stare at his deserted coffee. Granted, I’m not smooth—I get it—but he didn’t have to run out like that. I just wanted to see that he was safe. Shit, I don’t even know his name.

It's been awhile since I've read a vampire book, and this was a good one. I was sucked in right from the start. I found myself putting the book down to make it last longer. Tris is so sweet and innocent, and Ethan is not. These two have such chemistry right from the start. There was never a dull moment for me while reading this story. It wasn't really insta-love and the relationship and story developed and grew at a good pace. I love Tris's family and his best friend. I kind of want a story about Toby, he seemed like a good guy. I highly recommend this book.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
I am not one to read vampire stories as a rule, but the blurb for this one drew me in, and I am certainly glad that I got to read it. I should add that I am not a novice to the genre, just don't often engage, so I am aware of the general paranormal issues.

I enjoyed reading about Ethan and Tris, and how love somehow conquered all the problems between them. And for me, the biggest problem was most definitely Ethan's somewhat understandable reluctance, given the centuries of experience that he has behind him. However, Tristan is so beguiling to him, that he cannot help but be drawn to him. The dance that they engage in is both fun, frustrating, and frenetic. It is most definitely passionate, and ultimately very romantic.

I do think that it could have been a little tighter, there were times when I felt that the to and fro was unnecessary, and even the intimate moments didn't always draw the story forward, but I was curious as to what was going to happen next. Overall, it was very much a drama running inside Ethan's head, and once that was overcome, then it was all about introducing Tris to his new reality. I think that the fact that the world was aware of its paranormal elements worked well.

Sarah – ☆☆☆
This is an intense, sexy read. An ancient, consciousness vampire hitman finds himself stalking a beautiful young musician around New York City. With every encounter, Ethan finds himself more obsessed with Tristan, but Tristan’s humanity forces him to keep his distance.

This is gothic melodrama at its most extreme. Every emotion is heightened, every glance and gesture dissected and every interaction scrutinised. The men are beautiful, and the angst is overwhelming. They speak in meaningful, almost poetic emotional outbursts. The sex is alternatively a sacred, almost spiritual experience and a kinky, debased and rather bloody obsession for Ethan and Tristan.

So many popular tropes are thrown into this relatively short novel. Beyond the ancient vampire taught to feel again storyline, Ethan plays into the billionaire romance clichés and Tristan is a little bit Anastasia Steele in his world. But Ethan also plays into military, black ops, and law enforcement tropes with his job.

Readers who love sexy, over-the-top romance against all odds will love this one. Readers who want a hint of realism and readers who expect solid, well edited writing probably won’t love this as much. This is light, easy entertainment but I’m not sure it offers readers anything fresh, meaningful, or memorable.

We Still Live by Sara Dobie Bauer Blog Tour

Running from a scandal that ruined his life, Isaac Twain accepts a teaching position at Hambden University where, three months prior, Professor John Conlon stopped a campus nightmare by stepping in front of an active shooter.

When John and Isaac become faculty advisors for the school's literary magazine, their professional relationship evolves. Despite the strict code of conduct forbidding faculty fraternization, they delve into a secret affair—until Simon arrives.

Isaac's violent ex threatens not only their careers, but also John's life. His PTSD triggered, John must come to terms with that bloody day on College Green while Isaac must accept the heartbreak his secrets have wrought.

Close as they were to the foyer, Isaac was the first to notice the front door opening. A student walked inside. The kid dragged a heavy-looking suitcase behind him. Dressed as he was in a slim-fitting button-down, Isaac immediately assumed preppy, although that assumption altered and changed when taking into account the tight black jeans, Converse sneakers, and shaggy hair the color of caramel and chocolate—a mass of waves and curls that fell down the back of his neck but not quite to his shoulders.

The kid pushed his hair out of the way and looked up, eyes finding Isaac and flashing a moment of panicked nonrecognition before seeing Tommy.

“Um.” Isaac pointed toward the new arrival.

Tommy turned and shouted, “John! My man!”

Not a student, then.

Tommy wrapped John in a hug that actually lifted his feet off the ground. Isaac imagined it wouldn’t be difficult. The new guy might have been average height, but he was gangly, skin and bones.

Tommy ruffled his hair. “Have you lost weight?”

John grumbled and scratched his face with his middle finger. “What are you freeloaders doing in my house?” His voice was surprisingly resonant for someone Isaac considered “pretty.” At John’s pronouncement, crows of approval rang from every direction.

“Come meet Isaac,” Tommy said.

John wiped his palms on his jeans before reaching out to shake, and Isaac’s large hand dwarfed his.

“Isaac Twain is the newest addition to our special corner of Hambden hell. Isaac, this is John Conlon.”

John brushed more hair out of his face. “Nice to—”

“John Conlon?”

John and Tommy froze.

Isaac jerked his thumb over his shoulder. “The books on the shelf. Those are yours?”

John’s face, immobile in what looked like dread a moment before, melted into relief, tinged with a bit of blush. “Oh, yeah. You’ve read?”

“No, but I should. You’ve published a lot of books. You must be good.”

John’s nose wrinkled, and he looked away.

Tommy shook him by the shoulders. “John is an amazing writer. He had a story published in The New Yorker when he was, like, five. Are you working on anything right now?”

John glanced at the bookshelf. “Not lately.”

“You need a drink,” Tommy said.

John’s eyes widened on a big breath. “God, yes, I do.”

“Nice to meet you,” Isaac said, but John just nodded quickly, smile thin, before allowing himself to be herded farther into the house toward the sound of quiet laughter and clinking bottles.

Isaac felt it then—an outsider’s emptiness. He became a nervous-looking coat rack in the corner, a terrified tree waiting for the ax. As the party doubled in auditory volume, he bemoaned his spilled wine. Was it okay for him to leave? It wasn’t like he was supposed to make a speech. He was only there because he figured it was the easiest way to meet everyone before the first official faculty meeting, but he’d been standing around too long. He wanted to run.

Out of curiosity, he reopened John’s book from earlier and read the front flap. It was a coming-of-age story about a gay kid in the Midwest. He flipped to the back, and a picture of John stared back at him. He’d assumed the guy was tired when they first met, but no; apparently, John had perpetual bedroom eyes, and his hair was always an artful mess. He skimmed… creative writing professor at Hambden University… gay rights activist… Converse-wearer and “old-people music” enthusiast.

All arrows pointed to John’s probable sexual preference for men. A spark of interest flickered but quickly went out. True, John Conlon was what most people would consider beautiful, but he wasn’t Isaac’s type. John was the kind of man butch guys fought over in gay clubs, but he was too small for Isaac, too fragile-looking, girly. After all he’d been through, the last thing Isaac wanted was someone feminine.

A thin figure ducked into the library and literally hid against the doorframe. He took a long drink of something brown and leaned his head back. “It’s not good when you want to hide in your own house.”

“Library is the best place for it,” Isaac said.

John kicked away from the wall. “Tommy mentioned you just moved here? I’ve been in Lothos forever, so if you need anything…” He examined Isaac from his brown boat shoes to the top of his blond head. John’s large eyes, dark green, seemed bottomless—drowning pools of intellect and soul—only slightly overshadowed by his thick eyebrows.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆☆
Wow, this book is really intense, and so, so good. Bauer is a new author to me, but I shall definitely be reading more, as the writing is excellent and the pace just perfect.

Hambden University is recovering from a mass shooting by a student... the wounds are raw, the whole place is coming to terms with what happened, no one more so than John Conlon, who put himself in the way of danger to save the others. He has been hailed a hero, but has had serious mental health issues ever since. When Isaac Twain, new faculty member, joins the English Dept. he knows none of the history – having joined to escape his own nightmare – yet falls for John almost instantly.

As we get to meet the main protagonists and learn more of the secrets of Hambden and Isaac, the two men get to know each other. It is moving, sexy, illicit, and intense. I really don't want to say more because I am sure that the discoveries need to be fresh as you read them. But I can tell you that this will really make you think about those left behind after such a tragic event, and how they need more than a plaster stuck over the wounds. It reminds us to be kind to others, and ourselves, and how love may strike at inconvenient moments, but should be cherished.

Beautiful book – I am going to have to read it again very soon, because it is really special. This is certainly in my top three books of the year. Stunning!

Miss Catherine paused. “He’s been waiting,” she whispered and walked away. The only evidence of her presence was the sound of velvet dragging on carpet as she disappeared barefoot, back to her other guests.

The rest was up to Eric. Of course he’d flown first class from London but hoped he didn’t smell too much like airplane upholstery and cheap wine. He straightened his tie and adjusted his suit. He ran the palms of his hands over his slick, blond hair and took one long, deep breath before opening the door.

The room was as he imagined, cast in shadows of firelight, and a man stood facing the front window. He had the edge of a heavy curtain raised as he stared into the city’s night. At the sound of the door closing, the man turned—if he could be considered a man. He more resembled a wide-eyed teen, but beautiful, so very beautiful.

Eric sighed, smiled, and shook his head. “My God,” he said.

Dark eyes appraised him. “I could say the same.”

They both took steps forward, which brought Eric’s new whore further into the orange light. Pressed to guess an age—and knowing Le Chateau only hired whores at least twenty-one or older—Eric guessed twenty-two at most. He wore the body and face of a youth but bearing of a confident man. His hair was black—short on the sides, long on top—and shined with the midnight luster of a thoroughbred’s flank. His eyes were shining, dark pools in the firelight but probably brown in the sun. He had high cheekbones, an angular jaw, and skin the color of untouched morning snow. Despite the poised demeanor, he was small in stature and frame, dressed in a black suit Eric imagined had been sewn for him, stitch by invisible stitch. Despite all the young man’s beautiful accoutrements, it was his mouth that deserved worship, possibly idols built: a mouth so full, lush, and decadent, Eric was already half hard.

He stepped into the stranger’s space, towering almost a foot above the young whore, and opened the man’s suit coat. Eric ran his palms over slim sides and thumbed at the tops of jutting hipbones. Then, Eric bent forward with his mouth half open and sucked one wet, gentle kiss against the side of his neck. He smelled like spicy cologne and scotch.

“What’s your name?” He ran the tip of his nose over the stranger’s earlobe.

“Will,” he said.

“My name is Eric.”

“I know.”

Eric pulled back enough to see a small smile on Will’s face. His teeth were white and perfectly, perfectly straight.

“You must have cost a lot of money,” Eric said.

Will stepped forward and rubbed his nose across Eric’s carved chin. He practically breathed his response into Eric’s mouth: “And worth every penny.”

With that mouth so close, Eric was done talking. He slid one of his hands behind Will’s head and took hold to the back of his neck. His thumb was lost in soft black hair as he pulled Will even closer until their lips met. Eric moved slowly and savored the pliant softness. Will opened his mouth and allowed Eric’s tongue inside. Not only did he smell like scotch but tasted like it, too—something expensive with a lingering edge of vanilla. Eric’s other hand went to Will’s lower back and pressed their bodies together, which earned him a deep, delightful moan from his new toy.

Angie – ☆☆☆☆
I don't usually read this genre of book, but the blurb grabbed my attention, so I gave it a go and I am glad I did. This book had me biting my nails and on the edge of my seat the whole time. I found myself wanting to get back to the book and not do other things, like working. The sex was insanely hot, there was action galore, and lots of twists and turns. This book is not for the faint of heart, you need to read the trigger warnings but if those don't bother you, then I suggest you give this book a try. Will and Eric will take you on a ride to remember.

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
This is my first read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Broken News isn't your typical love story. It's twisted and somewhat dark, but oh so good. There is a ton of suspense and lust to keep you turning pages. Lies and obsession that lead to an unchartered love.

Very worth the read! A warning though, once you start you won't be able to put it down.

Eric West is someone who people know. And while it's not necessarily good that he is known, it does help keep him alive. When he returns from another trip, he visits his usual spot, but his good friend has already secured his entertainment.

Walking into the room, Eric meets Will. Both are instantly attracted to each other and because Will is a prostitute, there is little talking. However, over the course of a few days, both Will and Eric find themselves seeing each other exclusively at the club. In the past, this was unheard of for Eric, but he can't help but find Will distracting.

When outside forces come to jeopardize Will's safety, Eric will stop at nothing to defend him. Eric has to come to understand why his ideas of what he might deserve in life have changed and with those changes, accept the consequences of choices already made. And if Will really is worth all of the trouble, can Eric and Will figure out a way through their differences?

This story had a lot of potential for me. I really enjoyed watching everything unfold. However, it also felt slightly disjointed when it came to Eric's feelings and motivations. Will and Eric's chemistry wasn't fantastic. It felt almost more like a friendship that was forced into a relationship – and that might just be given their professions, I'm not truly sure. Overall, it was a quick story that had a lot of action. But the romance just wasn't really a great one for me.
