Admissible Behavior by Jenna Byrnes

Take one smart, sexy lawyer with tattoos covering his body. Add a macho, handsome Texan with a liquid-gold accent and enough hang-ups to drive a lawyer to commit a crime.

When Alex West told his parents he was gay they said, “Okay. What do you want for supper?” He grew into a happy, well-adjusted man and a sharp-as-a-tack lawyer. He has it all—except someone to call his own. Meeting Kyle Harbor for the first time, lots of thoughts run through his mind. Most of them dirty. Finally, someone sexy and available, and what a catch.

Kyle Harbor grew up with a homophobic father who spent years convincing him what ‘real men’ did and didn’t do. They definitely didn’t fool around with one another, and Kyle got a summer at Bible Camp to convince him. Married for nearly twenty years, he finally decided his beautiful wife deserved better and divorced her. Now he’s looking for love in all the wrong places when he stumbles upon Alex and sparks fly. Can he battle his demons from the past, or is their relationship doomed before it even gets a chance?

Reader Advisory: This book contains references to homophobically motivated physical child abuse, some brief references to drug use, one brief reference to gang rape, and implications of a ‘gay conversion program’ in backstory.

Alex and Kyle made me want to scream at times, but I fell in love with them both and didn’t want their story to end. Alex knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after it. Kyle knows what he wants, but refuses to go after it and doesn’t think he will ever get it. Throw in some great secondary characters, an ex-wife, a daughter, and you got yourself a good story. The chemistry with Alex and Kyle is off the charts and only gets hotter. This was a great story with just a little angst, but a fast read. I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store.

This is the second in the series, and whilst the cast is partly drawn from the first book, you could read this as a standalone. That said, Acceptable Behavior is a good read, so don't miss out.

I enjoyed this story – with two men at very different stages in their emotional lives, but somehow interested in giving each other a chance to reach a compromise. There is a good mix of family, career, and revelations, as well as some pretty steamy scenes. There were some little touches which I found amusing, particularly the towels.

There were some good side plots for additional characters, which hopefully mean that there will be more from this engaging group of people.

I look forward to seeing who is in the limelight next time.

Jenna Byrnes could use more cabinet space and more hours in a day. She'd fill the kitchen with gadgets her husband purchases off TV and let him cook for her to his heart's content. She'd breeze through the days adding hours of sleep, and more time for writing the hot, erotic romance she loves to read.

Jenna thinks everyone deserves a happy ending, and loves to provide as many of those as possible to her gay, lesbian and hetero characters. Her favourite quote, from a pro-gay billboard, is "Be careful who you hate. It may be someone you love."

Acceptable Behavior by Jenna Byrnes

Tattoos don’t define a person’s character, or make him sexy. But, if you ask Sam Madison, they sure don’t hurt.

Dr. Travis Nelson has a passion for ink but keeps his many tattoos covered by long sleeves and trousers. He’s aware that as a pediatrician he’ll be judged not only by the other physicians in his practice, but also by the parents of his young patients.

When Sam Madison takes his young nephew, Levi, to be seen for an ear infection, he’s immediately attracted to Travis and the feeling is mutual. But Sam’s sister Melanie is going through a rough time and caring for Levi, and covering her obligations, keeps Sam occupied. He feels like he’s in no position to start a relationship.

Travis sees things differently, though he’s unable to truly understand the deep bond and connection Sam shares with his twin. As Melanie’s life goes from bad to worse, Sam is forced to make difficult decisions. Is protecting Levi enough of a reason for the two men to stay together, or will fighting for the child ultimately tear them apart?

This is a really interesting read – it sometimes pushes uncomfortable buttons, but then also fits with the characters that are behaving in that way. It also grounds them as people who are fallible, who do have selfish interests at play, and who want to get what they want. It is a mixture of sweet and tense, a slow paced life but at the same time, feelings develop quickly. As the first in a series, it gives us a big picture of the place and the people, and lets us guess who will be featured in future stories.

I enjoyed the dynamic that has to come into play when a child is in the story – and it is effective, although I felt sorry for Sam when Travis was particularly blunt! The passion between the two guys is intense, and equal, which worked well give all the other inequalities. This is a book which makes you think as well as sigh, and smile. It has some lovely touches of humour, and family.

I will definitely be looking out for book 2 with interest. Thank you Ms. Byrnes.

Sam Madison is having a rough life. He moved in with his sister to help care for his nephew, Levi. Melanie isn't what you'd call an involved mother, she is on drugs and depressed over Levi's father going to prison, leaving Sam to do all the work. Sam is just plain tired. He hasn't been in a relationship in a while but doesn't even have the energy to care. That is, until he meets Levi's pediatrician.

Travis Nelson is a pediatrician. When he walks into the room with his next patient, he's instantly interested in Sam, but not knowing the situation, whether Sam's gay or straight, he moves the sexy man to his fantasies. When fate puts the two men together again, Travis has to find out one way or another what the situation is. Can Travis give Sam the help he knows he needs? Will Sam admit the sexy doctor is just what he needs in his life?

I fell in love with this story. It was a quick romantic feel-good read. At times Travis was a bit overbearing, but it was what Sam needed. He needed someone to care for him. The monologue in the court room was perfect and brought me to tears.

Looking forward to reading more from this author.
