Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is a story in the Hockey Allies Bachelor Bids collection and I am really enjoying having a slew of new books to read with a common theme, but different authors.

This was a good sports romance, with the difficult issue of being traded mid-season affecting Kyle. It was fun to see him enjoying being with his friend, Garrett, in particular – and the interview following their match on opposite sides of the ice.

Austin was a bit of a mystery to me as a character as he worked for a company which had his name in it, yet he seemed to be at others' behest. It is slightly explained later, but it seems odd all the same. I liked the idea behind the issues that AMMD suffers but felt it couldn't really be explored enough as it wasn't the core of the story, but at the same time was important. Austin vacillated between being a very successful, rich businessman and a rather young and naive man. Certainly the behaviour that both men displayed on being super sweet one minute, but then too busy the next was more immature than I expected.

I did enjoy how the story rounded out, and the ending was fitting and hopeful of a good future for the couple.


Sarah – ☆☆☆
This is the sweet story of a hockey player who falls for the businessman who wins a date with him in a charity auction.

I really like Kyle as a character. I like his relationship with his family, his friends, and his team. I like his maturity and sense of responsibility for the people he cares for. I’m not quite as keen on Austin. He’s addicted to his work and it feels like work will always be his first priority. As a result, he has few interests or relationships and he doesn’t treat Kyle very well from the start. No matter how often he apologises for being late or checking his work phone on a date, he keeps doing it. There were several moments I wanted Kyle to just walk away from Austin and I’m still not sure I agree with his easy forgiveness.

From a second date the day after the first to Austin meeting Kyle’s mother on the next date, the romance in this book happens at lightspeed. The two men move from strangers to boyfriends in the blink of an eye. This is unusual for gay romance – and what is even more unusual is the lack of sexual chemistry and lack of sexual contact until after the men have established themselves as a couple (announced through a cute selfie with boyfriend hashtags). The non-sexual cuddling and Netflix domesticity doesn’t really fit the ambitious CEO and the aggressive hockey star very well. When the two men finally do get physical, it feels a little bit awkward. The result is a romance that doesn’t feel terribly romantic or sexy.

Theo is at it again. Only this time, he follows his parents on a mission that changes their lives forever.

While his parents are normally okay with Theo having more autonomy than most high schoolers, when his dad's old friend calls with security concerns, Theo is told, kind of asked, to help his parents out.

This is more of a tale of the who done it than the others, I thought. It was filled with twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. I loved how Theo and his family, along with the other operatives, were racing against the clock.

Without giving too much away, everyone's lives will change in this story and I can't wait to see where the next book takes us. There are unanswered questions and unanswered paths that need to be discovered! I am so excited for what's to come!

This is the second installment and I do suggest that you read the first one in order to gain good insight into the characters who are present in this book.

Winger is back and trying harder than ever to juggle his secret life with his high school life. His boyfriend Eddie is very understanding, which helps, but Winger (Theo) has to make some tough decisions in this book. Not only is he a great hockey player, he's a great student and amazing at his job.

The mystery in this story is tied in nicely with Theo's school life. I really enjoyed the new characters and how the story meshed with Theo's secret life and high school career. His abilities are a unique asset to himself and the school – when put to the test, it was awesome to see it all come together.

I can't wait to see if Eddie's complication will be the next book, but that aspect of the story was intriguing. I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

This is a proper romantic fantasy – a famous hockey player falls for a small-town teacher.

As with all Dreamspun Desires stories, both Caleb and Aaron are perfect leading men – if a little bit too good to be true. The famous professional hockey player is humble enough to donate his time and money to an elementary school charity event. He cares for his sister and still holds a torch for his high school tutor. Aaron is a selfless, dedicated teacher who devotes himself to his students. They are both sweet and heroes in their own way.

These two are almost too perfect together. Between romantic dinners, coaching hockey together, and stolen kisses by a frozen pond, these two are fairytale sweet. Theirs is a pure sugar rush romance full of all sorts of good feels.

Because they fit so well as friends and lovers, the very minimal conflict in this story seems slightly contrived. Aaron doesn’t think the distance between Caleb’s New York team and his own job in rural New York is workable. He doesn’t think he fits in Caleb’s world and he is worried about Caleb’s travel schedule.

This is very much a Dreamspun Desires story. It’s a simple, very sweet, low heat romance. It’s supposed to be predictable and very low angst. I really enjoyed the characters in this story and it is beautifully written.

Will Knauss

WILL KNAUSS is a child of the seventies. When he wasn’t twirling around on the playground (like Lynda Carter from Wonder Woman), he wrote stories and performed plays for family members. Enthusiasm for his theatrical presentations varied. Before becoming an author, Will’s work experience ranged from hotel housekeeper to retail clerk. While living in New York, he even worked as a Wax Museum tour guide.

In 1995 he asked the man who would eventually become his husband on a date. No Netflix and chill for them, though, remember, this was the Dark Ages (aka the midnineties). They went to an actual theater to see the John Carpenter remake of Village of the Damned. They have been inseparable ever since.

Each week, Will shares his love of gay romance fiction with the listeners of the Big Gay Fiction Podcast, a show he co-created with his husband and fellow author, Jeff Adams.

Other random facts: He loves Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls and Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City. He can answer any question about Bette Davis (he’s that obsessed) and has an ever-growing collection of Wonder Woman ephemera (see Lynda Carter reference above).

Tracker Hacker by Jeff Adams

This is a great young adult story that really delivers on the mystery/thriller aspect. You have Winger (I love the hockey theme in this too), who is a young high school student with an aptitude for computers and code. I loved his character. Despite the tough life that already follows high school kids around, he takes on much more and wants to be part of the larger, better, bigger picture.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between all of the agency characters and felt that this aspect of the story was the most successful one. They all were developed well and I thought that they interacted in a very good way. These characters made the story.

What I felt lacked the most was the romance/relationship aspect of this story. I didn't really understand why Winger was with his boyfriend, who seemed clingy and whiny at times. I think this would have been much more successful as just a mystery/thriller without the romantic aspect, but I really liked the story and can't wait to see what Winger does next!

I have read a number of books in this series – and it is fun to suspend belief and go with insta-love every now and again. Given the short window of opportunity first presented to these men, it is inevitable that usual timelines get cut tightened.

I have not watched the film that the 'weekend' is dedicated to, so maybe there was an element of nuance that I could not appreciate. But I enjoyed the romance, and whilst I had a good idea where it would go, I enjoyed the journey.

If you are prepared to accept that this is a start to a great love, rather than a fully finished story, then this is certainly a good way to spend an evening. Thank you, Mr. Adams.

Harry does voice overs for commercials, audiobooks, etc. Having his own studio could cause a boost in his career and do away with the hassle of running all over town for his jobs. A highly recommended contractor was ready to start. What wasn't expected was the handsome owner to be doing the work.

Diego feels the same attraction to Harry as Harry does to him. They both think it would be a better plan to wait to start anything until Diego is no longer being paid for the work. Can they wait that long? Will it be worth it?

A Sound Beginning is a quick romantic little read. It had good flow, no real conflict, was an easy read.

For a very short read, I could tell you a lot about both the lead characters and am definitely voting for their happily ever after! I love the level of detail about the studio build, the reasoning behind it, and the progress as it is made. Obviously once it is completed and the light goes green gives us some fabulous action, but that works in no small part due to the buildup during construction. As I say, for its length, this has breadth (or was that Harry and Diego?!).
