4.5 stars of super sexy!

I am a huge fan of hockey romances and Lauren Blakely, so this was an automatic read – well, it turned out even better than I could have hoped, with two hot hockey players and the sister of an ex-player finding themselves in the right place at the right time.

I loved how the dynamics work in this story.

Hayes has not found a stable team, but he is very happy to be in New York, as Stefan, his good friend from college, plays on the team and has offered him an apartment to stay in... he daren't buy anything yet as he has no security he will be staying. His lack of confidence in his future and yet the hopes of finding his place are really brilliantly conveyed in this story.

Ivy has just found her fiancé is now going out with her boss and what's more, she is asked to cover their wedding – and reminded of how much good it will do her social media channels. She feels obliged to agree, and immediately resigns and packs her possessions. Walking back into her apartment building, box in hand, she meets Hayes waiting for the lift. Their exchange gives us hope that he will at least have some fun – especially as he's agreed to go to the wedding with her!!

Stefan is the captain of Hayes new team, and he is doing all he can to give him support and hope without making things worse with regard to the hazing of the new guy. There is some engaging play described, and hilariously we discover that Ivy's brother helped her get a new job, which is somewhat unexpected. It is clear that there is chemistry between Hayes and Ivy, and Stefan admits that he has liked her for a while, which leaves Ivy a little confused and also feeling a bit greedy! Given her last relationship ended so poorly, she is a little gun shy.

I really enjoyed the logic of the guys with regards to their interest in Ivy and the diligence with which they support each other in their work and private lives. It is both very engaging and also falls into place so naturally – delicious.

I definitely think this will bring a smile to your face!

The Best Laid Plans by Karla Sorensen

He should know by now that the best-laid plans… can change in a heartbeat.

A tough-as-leather football player. A happy-go-lucky historian. It’s love against all odds in a warm and emotional romance about found family, friendship, and the restorative powers of the heart.

Former Dallas football player Burke Barrett is weathering a lot of changes. He’s retired from football. He’s mourning the loss of his best friend. And now he’s been bequeathed a dilapidated house in northern Michigan he doesn’t want. To his surprise it comes with a long-legged, blindly optimistic renovation manager with big ideas for Burke’s inheritance. She’s passionate, irritating, and irresistible.

Restoration expert Charlotte Cunningham is used to rough exteriors. This surly client, with his stubbled jaw, towering physique, and inflexible attitude, is worth smoothing over. The attraction sizzles, and a proposal is in order: a romantic tryst to relieve the tension. No strings attached. A safe bet for both of them since Burke is prepared to renovate, sell, and move on.

A pet project with an end date. Does that go for love too? Burke must decide what he really wants and what he’s willing to risk. He should know by now that the best-laid plans can change in a heartbeat.

Charlotte Cunningham, it seemed, was very skilled at igniting my temper. Probably because I had found her attractive. Like Murphy’s Law.

This is the first in a new series. I really enjoyed it – it is a very different take on a sports romance, dealing with a man who has just retired from the game due to injury, and the unexpected turn his life takes due the to death of a close friend and fellow player, Chris, and his wife, Aimie. For a moment he panics that he is going to be asked to look after the children but, in fact, he is left a house! It had been in Chris's family for centuries but needed complete restoration after being sold off.

Charlotte is living in the guest house and working on the period restoration of the house in accordance with the memories of its owners, when they die in an accident. Now a somewhat angry Burke turns up saying he is now the owner of the house, trusted by his friend to get the job done.

As we watch Burke grieve his career, and his friend, and try and manage spending time at the house and with his sister and niblings, the line is stretched thin. Then he also realises how much Charlotte means to him – but struggles with understanding just how it can all fit together. And along the way, the house returns to its former glory thanks to Burke, Charlotte, and William, the contractor.

I loved how, as the house restoration progresses, Burke also finds some peace and a new fulfilling life.

His gaze shot through every line of defense I could ever hope to construct. What an odd moment to realize just how flimsy it was. Tissue paper thin. All of it. And Burke was a battering ram.

This story starts out with Maria Romano and her friends celebrating her 21st birthday. What she really wants is a birthday kiss from Enzo. The only guy she has ever wanted in her life.

Enzo Costa and his brothers were brought up as protectors for Maria and her sister, they were never to be anything more.

Years later and Maria is celebrating her 29th birthday. Now a divorced, single mom, she is ready to find real love and it comes in the form of Enzo Costa. Who happens to be the head chef of her sister's restaurant.

When Enzo gets news that he wasn't expecting, it takes Maria to calm him. And she will go with him to New York to see that a wrong is corrected. And hopefully, no one gets hurt.

This story is a slow burn for Maria and Enzo, but the suspense and intrigue are there from the beginning.

I didn't realize this was book two, so I will be going back to read book one soon.

The Night It Ended by Katie Garner

Everything led to one deadly moment…

Intertwining the narrative with the transcript of an anonymous interview, this stunning suspense debut from Katie Garner will take you on a twisting path where nothing—and no one—is what it seems.

Finding the truth seems impossible when her own dark past has her seeing lies everywhere she looks...

From the outside, criminal psychiatrist Dr. Madeline Pine's life appears picture-perfect—she has a beautiful family, a successful mental health practice, and a growing reputation as an expert in female violence. But when she's called to help investigate a mysterious death at a boarding school for troubled teenage girls, Madeline hesitates. She's been through tragic cases before, and the one she was entangled in last year nearly destroyed her...

Yet she can't turn away when she hears about Charley Ridley. After Charley was found barefoot and in pajamas at the bottom of an icy ravine on campus, the police ruled her death a tragic accident. But the private investigator hired by her mother has his doubts. If it were Madeline's daughter who died, she'd want to know why.

Arriving at the secluded campus in upstate New York, Madeline's met by an unhelpful skeleton staff and the four other students staying on campus during winter break. Each seems to hold a piece of the puzzle. And everyone has secrets—Madeline included. But who would kill to protect them?

M/F Mystery/Thriller

Dr. Madeline Pine is asked to consult by Private Investigator Matthew Reyes. There is a mysterious death at a school and the victim's mom wants to know what happened.

As Madeline starts her quest to figure out who knows what and what actually happened, as the reader, you're thrown into an entirely different case – one that is supposed to hint at Dr. Pine's mental state.

The mystery of the school girl is one that is both sad and somewhat predictable. I figured out what happened about midway through the story, but Garner throws in a few other issues that need to be resolved, so you want to finish and make sure those are handled.

Garner does a good job at sucking you into the current case, but I thought that the previous case and how the reader is introduced to it was difficult to follow. Snippets here and there, all while you're still searching for the killer.

I liked how it resolved and did think that it had good twists and turns.

Second-Chance Romance
Triggers: Click HERE to see Avid Reader’s review on Goodreads for trigger warnings.

This book begins where book two left off. They've defeated the "thing" once again, but everyone knows that this isn't over.

Lorelei and Xander have kept their distance for years, despite their souls calling out to one another. With nothing to really go on, their friends just aren't sure how to help these two fix their broken relationship. Everyone knows that these two are meant to be together.

Xander has been trying for years to fix what was broken between him and Lorelei, but she's stubborn and is holding on to their distance like a shield. Now, with danger lurking in literally any corner, Xander knows this is it. He either hovers and protects her without her approval – and risks ever repairing their relationship – or he lets others protect her, despite his instincts.

With the curse still looming and new, more dangerous revelations, it will take everyone's knowledge, everyone's love, and even forgiveness to fight this demon and lift the curse.

Twists, turns, betrayals, and secret messages will make this story exciting, fast paced, and super fun to read. It's a great story for around Halloween and although I wish the ending were even more drawn out to see a more complete epilogue, I loved how this all came together.

Ruthie☆☆☆☆
This is third and final book in the series, and you most definitely need to read this in order, or you will not only miss some great storytelling, but really not understand what is happening! I loved how we have a mystery which crosses over time, which reminds us of the Salem Witch Trials, but brings it right up to date too. And best of all, finally we learn why things went wrong between Lorelei and Xander, and how good the future may be.

We have known from the beginning that these two should be together, but clearly there is a barrier making that impossible – it is incredibly frustrating for Xander, who has no idea what happened to break them. As things get more and more intense in the battle to end the 'thing,' Lora finally has to admit that her friends and family should know what led her to leave town. She learns a valuable lesson about what being a friend really means, as they all forgive her, but express their disappointment at not being able to help.

There is a level of tension which has been building throughout the series, but I think we were all pretty confident that things would be resolved to the good – these couples, their families, and covens have to be stronger than evil... otherwise, what would the world be like?

I have very much enjoyed this trilogy – Kristen Proby has secured her status as a talented paranormal author as well as a fabulous romance storyteller.

Excerpt

Why you should read romantic suspense!

Hello all you Wicked Readers! My name is Julie Ann Walker and I write romantic suspense—a genre that’s seen a dip in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason. Who wants to read about international intrigue when the real world feels like a blazing dumpster fire? Escaping into the frolicking fun of romantic comedies or disappearing into another world vis a vis a fantasy or a paranormal romance feels more comforting, right?

But I’m here to tell you it’s time to revisit the world of Black Knights Inc. Because I’ve found there’s nothing more satisfying than penning “true to life” stories about spies and covert operators who work behind the scenes to save the world for all mankind. Spies and covert operators who restore my faith in humanity. Spies and covert operators who take a hose to the dumpster fire and make me believe, once again, that it’s possible we all get a happily ever after.

I hope you’ll join me for all the motorcycles and mayhem, all the action and adventure, all the rowdiness and red-hot romance that is Black Knights Inc: Reloaded.

Author’s Note: You don’t have to read the original 12-book series to enjoy the new Black Knights Inc: Reloaded stories. All books can be read as standalones. Although, I would suggest starting at the beginning of the spin-off, with Back in Black.

And now for an excerpt from Black Hearted

“And that’s the problem.” She pointed at his nose. “You’ve done nothing to change the way you see me. You’ve done nothing to change the way you treat me. I’m a perpetual thirteen-year-old girl to you, and it drives me insane because…” She swallowed and shook her head, unable to go on.

When he crossed his arms, his biceps bulged against the fabric of his sleeves. “Because what? You may as well finish your thought.”

There was something in his voice. Something that made her stomach flip. Glancing at him sharply, she was frustrated when his expression remained unreadable.

“Because I want you to see me as I am now,” she admitted sullenly.

“Why?”

Screw it, she decided. He must suspect how I feel about him, how I’ve always felt about him. It won’t change anything if I come right out and say it.

“Because I want you, Sam,” she blurted. And then for good measure, and so there was no way he could misconstrue her words, she added, “And not in the puppy love way I wanted you when I was in middle school. I want you the way a woman wants a man. With all the accompanying nakedness and sweat and the exchanging of fluids.”

Even in the low light, there was no mistaking the path his Adam’s apple took up the length of his throat.

“I lost my virginity to your sister.” The words were rough, like they’d been dragged over sandpaper on the way out of his mouth.

She waved a dismissive hand. “So what?”

“So doesn’t that mean I’m off-limits?”

She blinked. And then remembered what he’d said months ago. That because he’d dated Candy back in high school, it meant he was more or less her brother-in-law.

She’d scoffed at the notion then. She wasted no time telling him what she thought of it now.

“I mean, if you’d actually married her and become my brother-in-law, then yeah. Or if Candy would have a problem with it, then sure. But a high school fling that began and ended a million years ago? And a sister who doesn’t care about much besides the good standing of her membership at The Metropolitan Club? Pretty sure that means you’re fair game.”

“Candy might not care,” he insisted. “But don’t you?”

“Why would I?” She canted her head. “I spent my entire life being given Candy’s castoffs. All her old clothes. All her old makeup. Heck, I even got her old Honda Civic when she married Jared and he bought her a new Mercedes. I kind of feel like it’s only fitting that I should lust after her old boyfriend.”

Her words elicited the response she was after. One corner of his mouth quirked. “Why do I feel like you just called me Sloppy Seconds?”

“Are you sloppy?” she teased. “I’d just assumed you’d learned a thing or two since the days when you groped my sister on the park bench at Jackson Park.”

His jaw slung open. “She told you ’bout that?”

“Not at the time,” she assured him, deciding she was going straight to hell for having such fun at his expense. “I was too young. But once we were both adults? Over bottomless mimosas? Sure. I heard the stories.”

“For fuck’s sake.” He ran a hand through his hair and then paced about ten yards down the tunnel to where Fisher had parked the motorcycle. The light from his cell phone haloed him in a circle of white. “And this is why a man should never date sisters,” he muttered. “They compare notes.”

“I hate to break it to you, but it isn’t just sisters. All women share their experiences. It’s one of the ways we protect ourselves since we’re forced to date our only natural predators.”

That stopped his pacing. “Your only natural predators?”

“Think about it. When you hear about a woman being assaulted or killed, is your first thought that the perpetrator was a mountain lion or a man?”

“Jesus.” He shook his head. “When you put it that way, it’s amazing any of you step foot outside your front doors.”

“The urge to mate is strong.” She sighed breathily. “Unfortunately.”

He really played up the whole Super Man theme by shoving his fists onto his hips and taking up a wide-legged stance. “Is that the reason you want me? Because I’ve been vetted and deemed safe?”

“Oh, for—” She threw her hands in the air. “Are you serious?” When he refused to answer, simply stood there glowering, she was forced to go on. “I want you because you’re smart and sexy. Because you like the Coen brothers and because your sense of humor matches mine. I want you because of you, you big, dumb… dummy.”

She shook her head when her insult made that one corner of his mouth twitch again. For good measure, she added, “As for being safe? You’re probably the most dangerous man I’ve ever met.”

The kind of guy a gal could depend on no matter what. A real-life knight in shining… uh… biker boots.

This is the second book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read book one first as this follows directly on from it – and we meet Hannah and see the beginnings of this budding romance there. I was so happy that we got to watch these two get on the same page!

I have enjoyed all the Black Knights stories, and this new Black Knights Inc team are such fun – there is something rather wonderful about a group of slightly dysfunctional but incredibly close knit collection of strong, well-trained, and some super tech-savvy individuals who work at the behest of the president. In this book, they have to trust one of their own over the FBI, and that could create trouble... but only if their trust is misplaced.

Hannah is a super clever hacker who works for the government, but has been made to look like the terrorist – she needs help and how, so she contacts her long-time crush and Black Knight, Sam. From that moment on, the plot races along with some intriguing ideas about what could happen if the wrong people get hold of the power grid. Throw in the attraction between Sam and Hannah and the tension is scorching, and we can only hope for one outcome!

Another delicious storyline with some hilarious scenes and fun camaraderie, as well as some poignant moments. Cannot wait until the next Black Knight finds his match... and I think we get some strong hints in this book!

We met Sam and Hannah in the first book and there were sparks flying them. Now the sparks have turned into a simmering flame.

When Hannah's life gets turned upside down, her roommate runs to Black Knights Inc and Sam is all fired up to rescue her, even if she is being held by the FBI. But Hannah has to figure out who and why they are trying to sabotage her. The team at BKI helps Hannah, but can they stop the threat?

While Sam dated Hannah's sister when they were in high school and Hannah was 13, she had a crush on him. He has always seen her as a kid and still does now. Hannah has to make him see that she is a grown woman and she is in love with him, or she needs to leave with her heart in one piece.

This story is fast-paced, suspenseful, funny, steamy, and will keep you guessing until the end. I enjoyed this one and can't wait for more.

Avid Reader☆☆☆☆
Sam and his black ops group are always tasked with impossible missions. When he asks for help for his old friend, he doesn’t expect to see her in a totally different way. She’s no longer the 13 year old girl – she’s now a beautiful, intelligent woman.

Hannah has always had a thing for Sam. Knowing he thought her sister was gorgeous, Hannah has always kind of hand a complex about that. But she knows she’s capable and has great friends. When she finds herself embroiled in a scandal, she calls the only person who might be able to figure this out.

With an unknown villain, a target, and a country to save, it’ll take everyone to figure out why Hannah was targeted and how to stop the attack that they all know is coming.

This is almost like a second-chance romance, but it’s more friends to start. It is a slow burn of a relationship. For me, this was a slower romance – almost like a young adult romance.

The story is faster paced, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, JULIE ANN WALKER grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word.

Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper.

During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for a way to flex my mental muscles,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics.

“I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read.”

It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion.

Now Julie loves to travel the world looking for views to compete with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, petting every dog that walks by her, and… reading, of course!.
