Finding Sanctuary by Morticia Knight

Francesco might not know a thing about being a submissive, but for Master Theo, he’d be willing to learn anything.

Living on the streets of 1920s Los Angeles and pleasuring men in dark alleys for his survival is not how Francesco had thought his life would turn out. But he’s filled with the hope that someday—if he learns how to be a respectable fellow—he can make a home for himself and maybe even find a man he really cares for who also cares for him. In the meantime, he hustles to get by and looks for the good where he can find it.

Theo’s existence is safe and predictable. He indulges in his perverse nature at his friend Saul’s sadomasochism club on Hampton Road and negotiates contracts for the Hollywood players and studios. When an enticing little grifter crosses his path one day, the encounter unnerves him. Not because he gets conned, but because the refreshingly open and unaffected young man holds a mirror up to Theo’s own dreary existence. Theo might have plenty of material wealth, but his wealth of spirit can’t compare to the delightful Francesco’s.

Theo rescues Francesco from a dire situation and brings him home. If nothing else, he can at least find the desperate young man some decent employment. Instead, they both find themselves increasingly drawn to each other. But until Theo introduces Francesco to what being a submissive means, he doesn’t dare give his heart away. Francesco has yet to discover the secrets that are hidden behind the walls of the Hampton Road Club.

Reader Advisory: This book contains brief scenes of mild violence, homophobic slurs and references to past child abuse.

Publisher's Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of the Hampton Road Club series. This instalment is a prequel to book one and can be read first.

This is the sixth book in this series – but as the blurb suggests, it is a book which goes back to tell us how the popular D/s couple of Theo and Francesco come to be together in earlier times.

Another good installment, reminding us how different (and yet sadly the same) the 1920s were in terms of the treatment of gay men. Theo has an education and money, so lives the life he pleases, as long as he is discreet. He meets Theo on the streets and is immediately attracted to him, in spite of their difference in circumstances. They both give each other a great deal of trust, which is refreshing and fruitful for them both.

It is always good to read these stories with their old fashioned ways and turns of phrase – I look forward to new books as they are written, because one day we might find out just who does own the mansion.

Morticia Knight spends most of her nights writing about men loving men forever after.

If there happens to be some friendly bondage or floggings involved, she doesn’t begrudge her characters whatever their filthy little heart’s desire. Even though she’s been crafting her naughty tales for more years than she’d like to share – her adventures as a published author began in 2011.

Once upon a time she was the lead singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She currently resides on the northern Oregon coast and when she’s not fantasizing about hot men she takes walks along the ocean and annoys the local Karaoke bar patrons.

A Master for Michael by Morticia Knight

Finding a Master for Michael won’t be easy, but Javier is determined that his boy will have the best—even if it means letting him go.

The Hampton Road Club is a secret gathering-place for men of a more sadomasochistic nature. The 1920s might be roaring, but certain practices are still frowned upon in open society. Michael’s job is to greet the club members as they arrive and to report directly to the club manager, Javier. Sometimes, his direct contact with Javier has nothing to do with the club members and everything to do with submitting to the strict Master.

Javier would give anything to keep Michael as his permanent boy, but he owes his boss, Saul, a great personal debt for helping him when he was at his lowest. Saul taught him that professionalism is the key to keeping things running smoothly at the club. He knows Saul would be greatly disappointed if he were to ever find out about what goes on between him and the club greeter behind closed doors. That’s why he’s never revealed to Michael how he really feels and why he must do the one thing for which he’d never thought he’d have the courage—give Michael away to a new Master.

This is a novella in the series, and gives us another glimpse into the world as it stood in the 1920s, where men had to be super careful not to be discovered if they preferred male company and BDSM.

If you have read any of the previous books, you will know of the club and the management. Here we get to see Javier, the manager, try and come to terms with the fact that he should not mix business with pleasure. Saul, the owner, once again comes to the rescue. Javier's likes are in the SM area, and whilst not severe, I did wince at the way that Michael declared himself to belong to his Master.

Another good addition to the series.

Begging to Serve by Morticia Knight

A feisty, untrained Dominant shows up at Hampton Road. Could he be the right man who Colin’s been saving himself for?

Submissive Colin loves his new life and job at The Hampton Road Club. He doesn’t mean to make the staff angry when he reorganizes everything or to frustrate the available Masters by never letting them touch him. He only wants to serve someone, to make them happy, but he’s also waiting for the right man—the way his grandmother had advised him to do before she died.

Another night, another brawl. Roddy had hoped that Hollywood would have better male prospects than Louisville when it came to playing rough. When Roddy’s latest would-be conquest threatens him with bodily harm, Roddy is chased right into the path of two of Hampton Road’s Masters, Ned and Aaron. They describe a wonderful club to him, where sadomasochistic men can enjoy each other, hidden safely behind the walls of an elegant mansion.

The moment Colin and Roddy spot each other, they fall hard and fast. While Master Saul is thrilled that Colin has finally found someone, what do any of them really know about their new guest?

It seems that Saul’s fears are ungrounded until tragedy strikes in Roddy’s world. It’s then that the validity of Colin and Roddy’s new love is truly tested. Was their bond real, or did Roddy have another agenda he’d kept secret all along?

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is the first book in the series that I have read, and I did not cotton on from the blurb that it was set in the 1920s, but once I did, then the whole atmosphere and language made a lot more sense. For men to be together was already taboo, but to have kinky desires as well, really did require discretion. I am planning on reading the previous books when I get a chance, as clearly there is a lot of back story involving Colin. But I enjoyed it as a standalone too.

As soon as we met Roddy, I had in mind Jimmy Cagney, blond, curly hair, short but with a swagger – and that is when I clued in about the era too. I enjoyed meeting the Masters and their mission to find Colin a dominant. I got a good sense of who they were and the values that they expounded.

Overall it was sweet, gentle, and a true to the period story which I enjoyed reading.

I had a hard time getting in to this one unfortunately. I haven't had this problem with any of this author's books that I've read before, but this one took me a bit to read.

I did enjoy the characters and the whole idea behind the Hampton Road Club series. I think I may have benefited from reading the entire series instead of just this one as a standalone. The 1920s setting was really interesting to me for a BDSM and M/M books. That time period isn't usually what you'd expect and I liked the gentlemanly feel it gave to the book.

Colin and Roddy's romance is the best part of this book in my opinion. They balance each other so nicely. The softer side of BDSM between them is a nice touch.

I am not a big fan of the cliché types of names and situations in this type of book and this really stunted the book a bit for me. I had a hard time getting past it. To me, all of the uses of "boy" were similar to an average romance book overusing "Baby."

Overall, this was an okay read for me. I'd recommend reading the rest of the series before this one though.
