Just Give Me a Reason by Rebecca Rogers Maher

Rebecca Rogers Maher follows up Rolling in the Deep with a sexy and deeply emotional short novel in which unexpected desire leads to surprise beginnings.

Tony Lopez is losing it. Burdened by a broken marriage and a failing business, the divorced father of two young daughters isn’t on his A game when he meets Beth. She’s clearly pregnant and defiantly single: a beautiful, graceful vision that lights a fire somewhere deep beneath Tony’s layers of self-doubt. They connect at his brother’s upstate New York home during a weekend among friends. Except friends don’t feel this kind of chemistry—or want each other so bad it hurts.

Beth Cody has no use for ties that bind. She’s witnessed that kind of wrecking ball. The father of her child isn’t in the picture, and she couldn’t be happier. So when Tony sends her already raging hormones off the chart with his rugged good looks and pent-up sexuality, Beth is thrilled to indulge in a short-term affair, with no strings attached. But one taste isn’t enough. And now that she’s out of her comfort zone, Beth either needs to let go or take a chance on a man who might just be worthy of her love.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, and possibly enjoyed this even more – it is a really lovely read. I would love a Tony in my life!

How do you deal with the fact that your younger brother has just become a multimillionaire and found the love of his life, when you have just gone through a divorce and have a struggling business? Tony faces this as best he can, always aware of his father's expectation that he would be the man of the house, and that his mother brought him up to treat everyone with care and respect.

Beth also has to face a new future – her best friend, Holly, has become a multimillionaire and fallen in love. After Beth had been there to help with Drew, Holly's son, and support her through everything, now she is no longer needed. Her relationship-free love life suits her fine, although now she finds she is pregnant, she is worried about impending domesticity, even though she is happy to be alone.

These two first met in book one, and both realised that the other caused unexpected tingles...here we see them thrown together again and as the touch paper is lit, we can only watch and enjoy the chemistry burning. I love how family and distance vie for the time of these two, and how everyone else can see so clearly what they try so hard to avoid. Will Beth work out what she wants, rather than what she knows she doesn't need? Can Tony limit his attention to satisfy her demands? Lovely story, beautifully written. I do hope that we get another installment, as these people have become family already.

Rolling in the Deep by Rebecca Rogers Maher

In this raw, moving novel for readers of Jill Shalvis, Molly O’Keefe, and Karina Halle, two kindred spirits share a winning lottery ticket—and discover what it really means to get lucky.

Holly Ward is stretched to the breaking point, raising her young son alone and working long hours for minimum wage at a local superstore. Sure, she’s noticed the new guy with the easy grin and warm brown eyes, but she’s learned the hard way that relationships aren’t worth the pain. Still, when he invites her to split a lottery ticket, she figures a little innocent fun couldn’t hurt. The last thing she expects is to score big, which is exactly what happens...in more ways than one.

From the moment he meets Holly, Ray Lopez is drawn to her quiet dignity and openhearted beauty. And when they hit the jackpot together, he’s thrilled that the single mom can give her kid a better life. The only problem is the chaos surrounding them: lawyers and reporters swarming, friends and family angling to get their cut. In all the chaos, Ray discovers an oasis of calm and passion in Holly. But with the stakes higher than ever, winning her trust could cost him everything.

This is a sweet story that many of us will recognise having dreamt of having happened to us. Just what would you do if you suddenly won the lottery. But added to the mix is the fact that you jointly won it with a person from work...and you both might like each other...but is that due to the win? How does everyone else react, especially the press, and the unpleasant ex-husband? I really enjoyed the amount of thought and disbelief that both of them show about the win and what they should do – almost as if they had never bothered to have the dream. Holly is lucky to have a good friend in Beth, and to finally wake up to herself. Ray has a strong brother to help him – and given the name of the book, he will have a story too.

This is an easy read, and will make you think...just how easy would that transition be? (I reckon I'd do better – should anyone have a win they wish to share!)
