Denial by Natalie Dae

Her heart had been broken. How could it ever be mended?

Sometimes life has a habit of breaking a person, but Lori’s discovered there’s a reason for it. Better things are around the corner. She didn’t realize that at first, but after things went sour, a light beckoned, an anchor in the form of a man named Jaska.

He ignites her soul, understands her needs more than she does. She embarks on a journey, one that has many twists and turns, and with Jaska guiding her, she doesn’t think it can go wrong. Except there are terms to their relationship, a contract they’re bound by, and no matter what, they’re not supposed to express how they feel about each other. It’s dangerous—falling in love isn’t allowed.

But Lori has fallen in love, and the year Jaska has given to teach her the ways of the lifestyle is both pain and pleasure—and not only from spankings. It’s pain—she loves him but can’t express it. It’s pleasure—she gets to spend time with him.

Denial is the name of the game for both of them. Deny their feelings and everything will work out fine. But Lori knows that somewhere down the line during this year she’ll have to open her mouth and tell him how she feels. The question is—when?

This is an entertaining read, although I found it to maybe labour some points. I think possibly this was because I never really warmed to Lori. Jaska is undoubtedly hot, caring, delicious and patient beyond belief – but Lori seems incredibly selfish. It was a fascinating introduction to a form of BDSM, but whilst there was an oft mentioned connection between them, it didn't feel all that chemistry laden. Having taken so long to get to the point, I would have liked more of the way that they moved forward – although the final scene was good.

Outside the storyline there were a few editing issues which distracted me – the main ones I struggled with were consistency issues – if Lori and Rick met aged 18, why was the house hers when he left? And at one point she was drinking tea, and the next page finished her coffee. These are minor issues – but possibly affected my reading of the book.

Natalie Dae is a multi-published author in three pen names writing in several genres. Natalie writes mainly BDSM erotica. She loves a Dom/sub relationship and is fascinated by how it all works. The trust issue is the best thing about it for her, so creating characters who have to adopt trust is one of her priorities. “Watching my characters bloom under tuition is such a treat,” she says. “I find it such a privilege to be able to write about something that makes me learn something new with every book.”

She lives with her husband and youngest daughter in England and spends her spare time reading—always reading!—and her phone, complete with Kindle app, is never far away. “I can't imagine not reading or writing,” she says. “It's a part of who I am. Without it I'd be more than a bit lost.”

Natalie has many more BDSM tales swimming around in her head, so her workload for the future is very full. “What better way to spend a weekend than writing?” she says. “Saturdays are my main writing days, so I get up, open up a work in progress and rarely leave the desk. Unless I really have to!”

She writes at weekends and is a cover artist/head of art in her day job. In another life she was an editor. Her other pen names are Geraldine O’Hara and Sarah Masters. Natalie also co-authors as Sarah Masters with Jaime Samms, and she co-authors with Lily Harlem under the name Harlem Dae.

Soul Keeper was an odd combination of sweet romance and highly erotic sex scenes – and it worked for me. Although this is their first time meeting face-to-face, Rob and Carrie have been communicating online for the past two year and over the telephone the past six months. This built-in past in which they’ve formed a strong friendship that has developed into more makes the fact that they are meeting for the first time with the intentions of spending the night together believable. Especially when they don’t even make it to the hotel before Carrie gives in to her desires and entices Rob to join her in a bit of fun under the old oak tree. Soul Keeper is comprised of three chapters, with each being a location in which the two are able to express how deep their passion for one another runs and it is hot as the reader is treated to a little exhibitionism, a little spanking, and a whole lotta loving. The sweet comes into play between bouts of sex as Rob and Carrie profess their love for one another. While some of the professions are a little sappy, the characters are aware of it and don’t care as this is the culmination of two years of relationship building. I absolutely adored the ending and agreed that while Rob was a “soppy man” he and Carrie seemed to be just what the other needed. So if you enjoy your romances to be sweet with a big side of steamy, then you might want to check out Soul Keeper.

Firecracker by Natalie Dae

Being followed by a man should be creepy, but when he’s sexy as sin, it’s time to find out what he wants.

For a couple of weeks a man’s been following me. I’m sure it isn’t because I’m interesting—I lead a boring life. So when I finally find the courage to ask him what he wants, his response isn’t what I expect.

He thinks I’m someone else and that I need rescuing and protecting. The fact that I’m not who he thinks I am makes no difference—another man also thinks I’m this mysterious woman and is out to do me harm.

I have a choice. I can go with the first man and trust that he’ll keep me safe, or I can return home and let the second man kill me. It’s a no brainer, right? Now, all I need to do is get through the next few days without ripping the sexy man’s clothes off, because, oh my God, do they ever need ripping off…

This is a quick little read. It was interesting for the most part.

I really had an issue with the British wording in the book though. I can usually overlook it, but there was so much and words I've never heard before so it was off putting for me.

The story itself was good, but I had a hard time with the fact that it ended so abruptly and there seemed to be little to no communication between the main characters. There is a bit of action, but we aren't really told what is going on except bits and pieces, were they being chased or was it simply a car on the road behind them? Then they get where they are going and the story basically was just over with a rushed explanation of what happened to some of the characters.
