Avid Reader – ☆☆☆☆

This is the third book in the series, and I liked this one much better. You get to see Silas and how his past shaped who he is today. But you also get to see him change for the better with the help of Haley.

Haley is struggling after her father passed away and the insurance company refused to pay out on the policy. She is amazingly talented with a violin and despite working herself in order to make ends meet, she always finds time for her music. When she has to look for a new place to live, she isn't too hopeful.

Silas, for all of his faults, is so loyal to Drake that he sometimes can't see his own life without his position with Drake. When he sees Haley, he's instantly drawn to her. She's pure and innocent, goodness to his darkness. When he realizes that he can help her, he jumps at the chance.

Haley and Silas' romance is whirlwind. But dotted with issues and dominance, Haley knows her own mind and wants to show Silas that he is more than he believes. Silas was so upset with Drake during books one and two when Drake was unable to see how amazing Evangeline was, and in this book, yep, you guessed it... Silas has the same issue.

I was slightly miffed that a lot of the conflict between Silas and Haley was directly related to Drake and it wasn't ever really discussed. Overall, this was a sweet story about acceptance, love, fighting for what you want, and ultimately, finding a family. I wish that Maddox at least had gotten his own story and was disappointed that this was the last one.

This is the second book in The Enforcers series and you definitely need to read book one first, as this one starts where book one leaves off.

Evangeline is shredded. She trusted Drake with her whole heart and in return, he cut her down with vicious precision. Not only is she needing a place to lay low, but she has to contend with having no support system. And while she thought she knew the man she loved, she has to come to grips with the fact that he turned out to be worse than her skeevy virginity taker.

Drake is a showman when it comes to his own life. He knows that and understands what that means. But when it creeps into his life in an unexpected and detrimental way, Drake will have to decide how he's going to salvage his heart. He claims to love Evangeline with everything that he is, but his words are not backed by his actions. When he promised to earn back Evangeline's trust, once again, those are just words.

I wanted to clap Drake on both ears during this book. He had his head so far up his own behind that he failed to see what was going on right around him. Thank goodness for Maddox and Silas. They were the shining stars in this book. Without them, I don't think I would have made it through.

Evangeline will have to make a huge decision about her future and Drake will have to stop putting up barriers if he wants to have a future. It has a satisfactory ending, but I do hope we get to see more of them. Also, I really hope the rest of Drake's men get their own books too.

Let me start by saying that I really enjoy Maya Banks' books. I was a little thrown by this one though, as it seemed to be missing things or just lacking in what I have come to expect from Ms. Banks.

Drake is an alpha male who is used to getting what he wants. Not in some things, but in all things. He uses intimidation, money, and his loyal men to get the job done. While I had issues with his alpha-ness when it came to Evangeline, I think overall, he just lacked development or depth. He was sweet and generous when it came to Evangeline, but he believed that he needed to keep her wrapped in bubble wrap in order for her to "survive in his world." I liked his men far more than I liked him in this book.

Evangeline is somewhat of a conundrum. She was humiliated and rather than stand up for herself, she somehow manages to catch Drake's eye and then submits to his every whim without really knowing him. While I can understand the power an alpha male who won't take no for an answer might have, she just seemed to fold on herself pretty quickly. She molded to what Drake needed.

There were times in this story that I wanted to shake each character. They had the potential for so much. And while I did enjoy the story as a whole, there were things in their history that seemed to be glossed over. Also, I absolutely hated how Drake treated Evangeline throughout. Despite telling her she was important to him, he didn't quite live up to those words. I truly hope that Evangeline will find someone worthy of her gift or that Drake will quit being so alpha-holeish and show her what she is to him.

This rating saddens me. I've read each book in this series and loved each of them. However, I was disappointed in this one. Not only is it an insta-love story, but it seemed horribly rushed.

Isaac comes across a woman who is in desperate need. She's bruised, battered, bloodied, and terrified. All of his protective instincts shoot to the forefront. He knows that she needs help – wants to help her, but first, he has to figure out what or whom she's running from.

Jenna has an amazing gift. However, she's being abused and held captive because of it, so for her, it's more of a curse. She's also being pursued by a maniac because he wants what only she can give him.

While I liked that all of the characters from the previous book were involved, I think that there was just too little development. It just jumped right to Isaac declaring his love, claiming Jenna, and Jenna falling over herself to protect people. Jenna does fall in love with Isaac way too fast for someone who was abused as she was too. It glosses over the fact that this is a serious issue.

Overall, this was a disappointing read after the previous books; however, I'm a die-hard Banks fan, so I am hoping Shadow gets a story real soon.

As an avid fan of Maya Banks, I'm sad to say I was disappointed in this book. It had so much potential, to be so much more.

The insta-love plot device didn't work for me in this book. Jenna was kidnapped as a child and held in a cult for the past twenty years and on her first/second day of freedom she meets Isaac with DSS security. Within hours – hours – Isaac is thinking of Jenna as his and within days professing his love. Of course, Jenna does the same.

Granted, Jenna has endured much during her years of captivity by the cult and has life experiences that no one can imagine, but falling in love within a week seems extreme.

I loved the fact that we got to see characters from the previous books, but was a little concerned that no one seemed to think that this rapid fire love story was a little hurried.

Loved the end and how Jenna stood up for herself, but all in all, it was not the book I was hoping it would be.

Will I keep reading this series? Yes. I know Shadow and Dane's stories are coming and I want to know how their stories end.

He rolled over to retrieve his cell and punched in Eliza’s number, knowing it was late and that Sterling likely wouldn’t be pleased, but Eliza of all people would understand his suspicions. He needed to bounce some ideas off her.

“This better be damn good,” Eliza growled into the phone.

“Because I was about to be the recipient of the mother of all orgasms, and Wade is just pissed enough to throw my phone in the pool and withhold sex for a week.”

Isaac burst out laughing when he heard Sterling in the background.

“Jesus fuck, woman, can we keep our sex life and your goddamn job separate?”

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fifth book in the series and we get to catch up with all the previous relationships, as well as finally get some more insight into the solitary Isaac. I would definitely recommend that you read these in order, as the themes would make much more sense. Each of the women have special gifts, which are not always easy to bear – the leading lady in this story has been abused all her life because of her gift, yet remains charmingly naive.

There are some really difficult issues dealt with in this story, and although all the stories do have a slow burn, this one was pretty dramatic from the very beginning. Isaac and Jenna form an instant bond, which is carefully nurtured by Isaac as he wants to gain Jenna's trust. Time and again things get out of control, and even with the full strength of the team, it takes faith to believe that there is a solution to the problem.

Another solid story in this intriguing series. Given Jenna's gift, I do wonder whether some of the worse side effects may be improved by her actions in future. And it will be odd having a happy Isaac in the next installment!

Isaac Washington is part of the DSS security service. Where he has finally found a place that is almost like home for him. On his way to work one morning, he stops for coffee, and on the way back to his SUV, he notices the door open and someone standing there, ready to steal it. When the person turns around, he notices it is a woman, or young girl, who is battered and bruised. But what he notices most is her angelic looks, long blonde hair, pale skin, and clear blue eyes. He is drawn to her.

Jenna is on the run from people who want to use her and the gift, or curse, she possesses. She was kidnapped at a young age and kept in a cult and used for the elders’ benefit. Until she is sold to someone that thinks he is God and he will live forever as long as he has Jenna. She has found security and love with Isaac and the group from DSS. But she can't let them all die because of her. So she tries to run and ends up in the wrong hands and needs rescuing.

Can Isaac make Jenna see that his love and protection is all she needs to be safe? Will Jenna give Isaac the life he seeks to make them both happy forever?

I loved the idea of this story but would have liked a little more time for Isaac and Jenna to fall in love, it was too rushed for me but the story was great. I am glad the DSS guys and girls from the other stories were in this one too.

So, I have two things before you read this review:
1. You should read the previous book in this series so that the characters make sense, and,
2. I am biased. I absolutely love Banks, so I went in to this book expecting to like it. She didn't disappoint either.

I love all of these characters. They are developed, complex, loving, but not without flaws and it's those flaws that make them so awesome to read.

Joe is Nathan's twin. He has kind of been the odd man out because he loves his single status. While he doesn't hate that his brothers have found their forever women, Joe still maintains that he's happy and doesn't need to be with anyone.

Rusty is an amazing sister. Not only is she brilliant, but she's an amazing hacker as well! She has been living in the shadow of her brothers and their wives for so long that she decides that she needs to strike out on her own. But when her friend reaches out to her, she does the only thing she can think of – she saves her friend's life.

Zoe is sweet, innocent, and naive. She is running from people who seem to think that she has value – to her father. But Zoe knows that despite who her father is, she has never been a person of value. When things go sideways, everyone pulls together to figure out how to move forward. Joe will stop at nothing to prove to Zoe that she's worth loving and Zoe will wish so hard for a happy ending.

I read this story in one sitting, because I just couldn't put the book down.

There is a side story that I can't wait to see more of – Sean and Rusty. Their story has been building and it made me laugh, cry, and feel so much sadness. I am so looking forward to seeing what comes next!
