Virgin Territory by Lia Riley Blog Tour

Practice Makes Perfect

Patrick “Patch” Donnelly has what it takes to be the best goalie in the NHL…if only he could learn to control his temper. When Coach orders him to get his head in the game with private yoga classes, Patch isn’t having it. There’s no way this tough Boston guy would be caught dead downward dog-ing his way to inner peace. But if he refuses, he risks his starting position and the dream he sacrificed everything for, including joining the priesthood.

Yoga instructor Margot Kowalski is over men. After yet another toxic relationship, she’s eager to forget love and focus on growing her business. Doing the Hellions head coach a favor by helping out a troubled player can't hurt, and it might give her career a high-profile boost. But free-spirited Margot is soon charming the pants off Patch. Literally. Her sassy combination of sweet and sexy proves irresistible to the goalie. Before Patch can give into temptation though, he’ll have to confess his biggest secret:

He’s a virgin.

But Patch is hiding more than sexual inexperience, and his dark past soon threatens to destroy his shot at true love.

Margot stood on tiptoe, both hands clutching the front of his t-shirt, and kissed him full on the mouth. Their ragged breaths mingled a moment. He tasted the brown sugar in her lipgloss before she broke free, pressing a quick second kiss to the tip of his nose.

“Go to bed,” she whispered, clearing her throat and stepping back. “And have a great game tomorrow.”

It took every last shred of Patch’s willpower not to close the space again, to consume her. “There’s something else you should know.”

“Shoot.”

“I’m not going to get a lick of sleep if you leave.”

“If I stay, you won’t sleep either,” she shot back, shrugging into her jacket.

“I’ll take those odds.”

She shook her head slowly as if with reluctance. “I’ve got to fold. Goodnight.”

He took her hand and held it between his own. Her skin was cooler than his. He didn’t like that. He wanted to tuck her against him, warm her up. “Do me a favor and call when you get home. I want to know you got back safe, especially driving on that spare.”

“It’s been a long time since anyone has cared if I got home,” she said with a smile. “Careful, you might be turning into a gentleman.”

“Don’t get carried away. The things that I want to do to you are far from gentlemanly,” he said in a husky tone.

She rocked her head back and unleashed a frustrated moan. “Quit leading me into temptation. I’m trying to respect your virtue here.”

“My virtue can take a long jump off a short fucking bridge.”

“That might be. But... if we end up taking that jump. I want it to be special. That’s important. I want you to feel special.”

Blood rushed to his ears. “Funny, I feel the same way about you.”

“Then we’re in agreement and I’m leaving.” A wicked gleam entered her gaze. “But while you wait for my call, slip into something more comfortable.”

“Like?”

“Nothing at all.”

She blew a kiss, pirouetted, and was gone.

I have not read the previous books in this series and didn't feel that it was necessary to understand the characters or plot in this one.

Patch is somewhat of a conundrum. He has a temper, but I don't necessarily believe that it's because he's angry. He had a very roundabout way of getting into hockey and despite his teammates, it seems that his best friend, the priest, knows him the best. I like that Patch was gruff, but at the same time, he has a sweetness about him.

Margot is a take-no-prisoners type of woman. She has an idea and wants to know how to execute it. However, she needs to start somewhere and with the help of her friend, she starts with Patch. I enjoyed Margot's temperament and banter with Patch.

I think where this book fell short for me was the quickness of the progression. There were a lot of opportunities to extend the relationship beyond the physical and delve more into the emotional, but overall, this was a surface relationship. I wish the story would have been more developed – especially with away games and the sexy banter between those.

Overall, it was a very quick read about romance, but it had the potential to be much more.

I adored this book. The characters took the time to get to know each other, their secrets and pains, and finally, to be open to love.

Love didn't come easily for either Patch or Margot. Margot's reluctance is due to her past history of dating guys who only seem to want one thing and it’s not really her. Patch's demons are far more deep-seated but he can sense that Margot is the one to help him conquer his past.

This is the third book in the series, and I would definitely recommend that you read them in order, although each book is a new romance.

Here we get a very sweet, cute, and very enjoyable sports-based story. Patch is a man who has spent all his time playing sport, and not being distracted by girls, who suddenly finds one who is just perfect for him. He has a bad reputation for getting angry but finds that his yoga teacher has an amazing ability to redirect his energy in the hottest of ways.

Margot is an unlikely person to fall for the stressed out and, as it turns out, very innocent goalie, but somehow she finds that they are a perfect match. There is a lovely level of humour and as she learns more about Patch's upbringing and religious friend, she understands what a good guy he is, and how he is definitely worthy of her love and attention.

I really enjoyed this new book in the series, and thought that the sports elements, the legal case, and the romance worked really well together. Thank you, Ms. Riley.

Head Coach by Lia Riley Blog Tour

Neve Angel’s life is all work and no play, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. One of Denver’s top sports reporters, she's fought hard to make it in a male-dominated world, and she won’t back down from a fight with anyone–not even the Hellions’ gruff head coach, Tor Gunnar. Her hostile relationship with the icy Scandinavian is the stuff of local legend.

Tor Gunnar hates dealing with the media; at best, they are a nuisance and at worst, a distraction. And no one distracts him more than the scrappy, sexy reporter who gets him hot under the collar. When he wins a not-so-friendly bet with Neve, he decides it’s high time they either kiss or kill each other, and invites her as a date to an out-of-town wedding.

But what happens when enemies become lovers? Will they be able to smother their sizzling attraction, or is it time to start playing for keeps?

I loved this book. The dynamic between Tor and Neve is well written.

Both Tor and Neve have insecurities and they each deal with those by immersing themselves in their jobs, almost exclusively. In their professions, they are unstoppable, but off the ice and off the record, each hide awkwardness by being alone.

As they get to know each other outside of prying eyes, both Neve and Tor realize that this relationship is something worth fighting for.

I enjoyed the first book in this series a lot, so was delighted to get this second story to review. I would suggest that reading book one would be sensible, as you get some of the background and characters fixed, but it is a great read in its own right too.

There is a thread of absolutely lovely humour running through this book which had me laughing out loud quite a few times. It is not really a comedy, but Neve and Tor certainly come up with some fabulous lines, and that is not including his terrible jokes! The puns come thick and fast at one point and are perfect.

It is a low drama, but highly entertaining story, with some poignant moments, some ethical issues, and some super-hot chemistry. It is a second chance at getting things right for both of these people who have closed themselves off from love for the sake of their much loved careers.

Can't wait to catch up with them again in future installments.

Mister Hockey by Lia Riley

Her biggest fantasy is about to become a reality...

Jed West is Mr. Hockey. The captain of the NHL’s latest winning team, the Denver Hellions—and the hottest player on the ice—at least according to every magazine... and Breezy Angel. Breezy has been drooling over Jed at games for years, and he plays a starring role in her most toe-curling fantasies. But dirty dreams don’t come true, right?

Then Jed saunters through the doors of her library, a last minute special guest for a summer reading event, and not only is he drop dead gorgeous up close, his personality is straight up swoon-worthy. He even comes to the rescue when she has an R-rated “Super Book Worm” costume malfunction. But when he mistakenly assumes she’s more into books than pucks, she’s too flustered to correct his mistake. And then comes a big kiss, followed by a teensy-tiny problem. Jed’s dating policy is simple: Never date a fan.

So what’s a fangirl going to have to do to convince her ultimate crush that he’s become less of a perfect fantasy, and more like the perfect man... for her?

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

Mary Jo – ☆☆☆
I love hockey and hockey romances. While this story does involve hockey, it occurs during the off-season. As in, they just won the Cup.

There are a lot of strings and plot twists in this book and I feel the author just scratched the surface of most of these. The story with Jed and his brother's football injury could have been explored in more detail, giving a strong insight to the injuries that athletes face that have both short- and long-term effects on both the athlete and their families.

Breezy's issues stem from her lack of self-confidence and her mother's belief that she never applied herself as much as she could. When Breezy decides to make a major life decision, her mother's all flowers (literally) and roses.

I did like the book and will probably read the next book in the series, because hey, I love hockey, but I hope the next book delves a little deeper into the issues that face the couple.

Lee’Anne – ☆☆☆☆☆
This is an addicting read that I didn’t want to end! I love that it’s not your typical “sports read,” it has a unique storyline that will have you unable to put it down.

Jed West is the captain of the NHL’s Denver Hellions and he’s the current “it” man of hockey. Through a series of crazy events, Jed meets Briana Angel aka Breezy, his biggest fan – though she doesn’t let him know that. Breezy’s entire world just about revolves around two things – family and hockey. She and the women in her family are the biggest Denver Hellions fans around and Breezy in particular worships Jed West. Breezy is your typical bookworm and can’t believe it when the gorgeous Jed is showing interest in her… causing her to withhold the fact that she is his biggest fan. Then when Jed’s doctor gives him some news that could change things forever, the person he confides in is Breezy… when the paparazzi finds out at the same time that Jed discovers Breezy’s fandom, things get really interesting.

This book is laugh-out-loud funny, basically from page one I had tears streaming down my face from laughter. This book is super-fast paced, I devoured it in one sitting and I absolutely love the way the author introduces the characters for the next book and I cannot wait for book two so that we can get their story.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the first in a new series – a hockey sports romance series no less – so I was delighted to get the chance to read Mister Hockey. We get a little insight into the Hellion team and success, but the story revolves around their captain, Jed West. He has a past that makes him really consider whether the sport he loves is worth what he fears the most.

Through a series of humorous misadventures, Jed meets Breezy and they form a connection (literally, and frequently!), but it is based on her claim of not being a huge fan of his. This is inevitably going to lead to trouble, and a few crazy capers.

I really liked the comedy, but the serious side was well covered too; it was really only the speed of the romance that seemed surprising. But actually, I think it may have been perception rather than reality, as some events surely took longer than a few days – e.g., business loans, leases, etc. So, I gave the insta-love feel a bye, given it probably just highlighted the key parts.

Some of the characters definitely have mileage in them – such as Breezy's granny, and the clear hints about Neve, and the Hellions coach mean that we will hopefully get to see more of Jed and Breezy too.
