The final installment of the Lancaster Falls Trilogy is go gripping. Solving the mystery of the killer of the 30-year-old remains becomes even more pressing as prominent members of the town are being violently murdered and their long-held secrets exposed. The tension builds bit by bit, our heroes are in danger, and eventually all the pieces fall into place and our killer is revealed. And all I can say is I did NOT see that coming. And I love that I didn't guess who the killer was and that I was on edge as I turned the pages. So good.

Among the fantastic mystery/suspense story there is also a lovely romance. FBI agent Lucas comes to town to assist in the murder investigation and stays at Josh's motel. The attraction between them is instant, and sexy glances and late-night conversations turn into kisses and more. With so much going on in the town they have each other to turn to for support.

Once again, RJ Scott mixes murder and romance and comes up with a great story. While I was excited to get to the end to find out who did it, I was sad that my time with people of Lancaster Falls was over, but I know this is a series that will be on my re-read list.

This has been a really excellent series – you absolutely have to read it in order, or truly you will not get the underlying story at all! Thankfully, things finally come together in this installment, and RJ Scott has really come up with a complex and intriguing mystery, with a rather mind-blowing reveal at the end. I found it to be peeled away at exactly the right pace, and with each layer giving another possibility, until finally we get to the heart of the evil that has been going on all too long in Lancaster Falls!

The romance is also very enjoyable, with FBI special agent Lucas falling for hotel owner, father, and Oops! white hat hacker, Josh. Lots of complications with this being anything more than a short-term fling, and yet it is a very sweet and smooth journey most of the way. We also get to catch up with the relationships which formed in earlier books, and see how all their lives have improved thanks to having a stable and loving home life.

I would definitely recommend this series, and now you can read it all, cliffhanger free.

This is a satisfying conclusion to the Lancaster Falls Trilogy. The third book focuses on hotel owner Josh and FBI agent Lucas. With the body count rising in Lancaster Falls, Lucas provides Sawyer’s team with the federal assistance necessary to finally get the answers the town needs.

I will admit that I was a little bit reluctant to continue with this trilogy after the slightly bizarre events in the second book. The third book is only slightly more plausible, but it is an exciting read that does manage to provide readers with closure. This is probably the goriest book of the three with grizzly new murders complicating Sawyer’s cold case investigation. The pieces do eventually fit together but my reactions remain mixed. Oddly, the whodunnit is both too obvious and not completely credible. It’s ultimately a satisfying, suspenseful read – if readers don’t think too hard about various details.

I always struggle a bit with romantic suspense – the idea of two leads falling for each other while chasing a serial murderer is always a little bit difficult for me to process. I did enjoy the romance in this book. Josh and Lucas make sense together, and while the focus of the book remains on the investigation, there are enough heated moments between these two that readers will be cheering them on to their happily ever after.

I'd been desperate to get my hands on this book. Without a Trace is the second installment in the Lancaster Falls trilogy. The mystery that commenced in book one continues in Without A Trace, but this story is told from the point of view of Drew, whose brother was killed, and Logan, a local cop investigating the murder.

Drew has returned to Lancaster Falls after the remains of his brother Casey, who disappeared 12 years earlier, were discovered, along with other remains. Drew is angry and determined to discover who killed is brother. He proceeds to start his own investigation and ask questions around town, which stirs up trouble.

Logan, a cop investigating Casey's death, keeps crossing paths with Drew. The chemistry between them is hot and their romance is a sizzling, slow burn. They are a great match and a case of opposites attracting. Logan is quiet, steady, and follows the rules while Drew ignores the rules to get what he wants. On the mystery side of things, more clues are uncovered and we slowly start to realise who might be involved in Casey's death.

By the time the story is finished, while we have some answers there are still many more questions. The third and final installment in this series, All the Remains, cannot come out fast enough. This story gets five amazing stars from me.

This is the second book in the series – and I have to admit that having read the previous one when it first came out, I did take a little while to get back into the underlying story. You most definitely need to read them in order, and ideally together. I am writing this assuming that you are up to date!

Drew left Lancaster Falls, devastated that his brother Casey had vanished. Now that Casey's bones have been found, he rushes back from his military life to find out what really happened. He hasn't been back once, and much has changed, but at the same time very little. He is angry, wants answers, and used to being part of the action, he struggles to behave like a civilian.

I loved how he and his mother manage their reunion, and how we see them reconcile the hurt and the distance. As awful as the grief is at Casey's death, it also enables them to mourn him rather than live in uncertainty and hope. It is well written and moving without ever being sentimental. In fact, I would say that stoicism and a degree of anger remains throughout the book, which makes it an intense read a lot of the time.

As we get the story from the viewpoint of both Drew and Logan, an ex-Ranger who has worked in the PD for the last two years, we benefit from the newcomer and the desperate brother giving us their take on the relationships and interactions in the town. The fact that they are also battling a strong attraction to each other, incapable of resisting it, yet also not in a place that it makes sense to get close. There is some confusion as to whether they need it to avoid what is happening in the investigation, or whether it is in spite of it, but it gives an interesting edge to the situation and also gives us hope that Drew will be able to view his life differently and more peacefully in the future.

There is another book to come, so it is no surprise that there is a bit of a cliffhanger, but it is not in relation to the men, so feels less stressful than last time!

The second book in this series is a slower and slightly less atmospheric follow up to the first. This time, the focus of the book has shifted from the sheriff to Logan, his deputy, and Drew, who returns to Lancaster Falls after his brother’s remains are found.

I really enjoyed Drew and Logan as lead characters. A special ops soldier, Drew’s mental and emotional health is fragile before he learns of his brother’s death. Drew’s initial response is violent and emotional, but he becomes a more effective investigator as he learns to channel his rage more appropriately. Logan is a calming force for Drew and his own military experience helps him understand Drew’s mindset. Most of the focus of the story is on the dynamics between the two men, with less time spent on the actual investigation than in the first book. There is great chemistry and a few hot scenes between Drew and Logan but I’m not sure this works as an actual romance novel and their path to a future happily ever after isn’t completely clear.

The investigation drags somewhat in this story. There isn’t any sort of progress until near the end of the book and I didn’t enjoy the way the characters go round and round in circles without anything actually happening. I like to keep up with the investigation in a crime story, but I hate it when the answers are too easy. In this book, I guessed part of the ending far too early and I’m pretty sure I’ve already guessed most of the ending of the trilogy. While the story slowly builds the personalities and characters of the citizens of Lancaster Falls, the baddies are a little bit too obvious by the end of this story.

I will admit that I struggled with the explosive and completely implausible last scenes in this book. What starts as a subtle, atmospheric crime story becomes over-the-top melodrama for several pages that don’t necessarily make sense for the characters involved based on previous actions and interactions.

I will read the third book in this series because I want the closure but I really didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one. Hopefully the third book impresses me more.

Oh wow! This is such a brilliant start to a new series! This atmospheric murder mystery is a huge departure from anything else I’ve read by RJ Scott and it’s a wonderfully eerie, slow burn suspense. It took me until the end of the story to realise that the murder mystery will play out across the whole series – this first book only really sets the scene – and I’m already desperate for book two.

The focus of this first book is the discovery of human remains by Sawyer, a small town cop, and the unlikely romance that develops between Sawyer and Chris, a horror writer new to Sawyer’s hometown. The mystery is more the focus of the book than the romance but with Sawyer born and raised in Lancaster Falls and Chris observing the town as an outsider, readers benefit from two very different perspectives on a town that feels a little bit creepier with each page.

I love the complicated relationships between the inhabitants of Lancaster Falls and I love the many secrets that start to unravel with the discovery of the bodies. Chris’ perspective is coloured both by his imagination and his work as a horror author while Sawyer’s observations are influenced by childhood experiences. Neither is a terribly reliable narrator and I love that readers have to fill in the gaps between the two perspectives for themselves.

Everything about this story feels entirely different from what I expect from RJ Scott. There is a definite Scandi noir feel to the book with the claustrophobic small town America setting reminding me of the TV show True Detective. The characters make repeated references to horror writers like Stephen King, which also fits. I really love this book and I can’t wait to get my hands on the whole series.

What Lies Beneath is the first book in a new trilogy by RJ Scott. I’ve read RJ Scott’s work before but What Lies Beneath is far and away the best. This story perfectly combines mystery and romance in a small town, run by a corrupt mayor who is supported by an equally corrupt police chief.

Our heroes are local cop Sawyer, who has returned home to Lancaster Falls having worked as a cop in Chicago, and Chris, a horror novelist. When they meet the sparks fly, even though Sawyer tries to ignore it. The romance between these two is so simple and lovely. They need each other. Chris is suffering from writer’s block and is finding inspiration in Sawyer. Sawyer needs someone to lean on for emotional support while he deals with everything that is going on in town.

The discovery of bones in an exposed dry lake kicks off the mystery. Are they the bones of a missing friend from Sawyer’s childhood? Are the bones much older than that? There are plenty of questions that had me asking, “What is going on in this town?” As we learn more, that question had moved to more of a, “What on earth is going on in this town?” I have theories in my head, but I don’t want to examine them too closely because I’m excited for this story to unfold and I want to be surprised.

When What Lies Beneath came to a close, I was desperate for more. I woke up the next morning with Sawyer, Chris, and the town of Lancaster Falls still on my mind. Book two in this trilogy, Without a Trace, is due out later this year and I’ll be waiting with bated breath for the next instalment. I am desperate for more.

This is the first in a new series, and I really would like book two (and probably three) to be ready right now! There is a wonderfully mysterious plotline which definitely had me guessing and second guessing, with a strong flavour of both Scandi noir and small town America, questionable separation of law and business interests. I loved it! Add in a blooming, intense, and engaging romance, and this is a winner for me.

I loved how we started with the rumours surrounding a newly renovated remote cabin, with the expectations of it being the hide-out of a mafioso or drug baron, to the reality of there being a very dark secret previously hidden under the now receding lake shore. Author Chris finds that this may just end his writer's block, but how much of his new friend Sawyer can he get away with including in the pages?

I can't write more as I worry that I will spoil something, so trust me when I say that you will be swept along by the smooth writing, the unfolding mystery, and also the start of an engaging relationship. Enjoy!
