Wilde for You by Jennifer Ryan

Welcome to the Dark Horse Dive Bar, where the Wildes throw one hell of a party and love could be a barstool away!

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan’s page-turning Dark Horse Dive Bar series continues with this story of love lost... and found… as a widow seeking to heal her heart crosses paths with a rancher/bartender who offers her a taste of adventure.

Welcome to the Dark Horse Dive Bar, where the Wildes throw one hell of a party and love could be a barstool away!

Landscape artist, Layla Brock, knows what it feels like to love someone so completely you’d do anything for them—even take their secrets to the grave. Widowed after her husband’s betrayals and tragic death, Layla is searching for a new scene to paint, a new life to live. And Wyoming feels like the perfect place to get lost and find herself again.

Jax Wilde runs the family ranch, but has a few side hustles: wrangling his sisters, covering shifts at the Dark Horse Dive Bar, and renting out cabins to tourists looking for the ranch experience. His busy schedule, plus a bad breakup, equals no personal life. And then she showed up. And the woman he thought he had nothing in common with turned out to be his perfect match.

Layla knows what it feels like to lose everything. Jax is a man who wants it all—a wife, children, a life filled with happy memories. It’s a beautiful picture of a life Layla thought she’d had but turned out to be a lie. This could be her second chance…

Until her secrets begin to unravel and a new threat is revealed. There’s one difference this time: she has Jax Wilde on her side…

This is the second book in the series – and I loved it!

The moment Jax and Layla see each other, they are smitten, and somehow the filter is off and they tell each other how they feel – completely out of character for both of them, but they just can't help it... such fun and original when most books thrive on lack of communication.

That is not to say that they don't have issues from their past relationships, and struggle to trust, but they both recognise that this is special and so are patient with each other and affirm their attraction and constancy.

I found Layla's artist's eye a refreshing way for us to imagine Wyoming, and the beauty around her; this is undoubtedly down to the talent of the author, that this is so vivid and compelling. I liked the touch about not being her work until she signs it, and that happens only as she is about to deliver the work. It was such a strong contrast to Jax's world of running a working and holiday ranch and a lively bar with his family.

This was a really good story with lots of layers, with a passionate romance for a super hot and sexy couple at the middle of it.

This is the first book in a new series – and I am definitely adding this to my look out for list, because I really enjoyed it! There is a good amount of world building, which has ensured that I need to know what happens to the rest of the Wilde siblings!

As the reader, we know pretty much immediately what Viper is, so the tension is lessened in one way and seriously heightened in another – which is a really effective tactic in this novel as the plot unfolds. I love how we get to understand the depths of frustration and psychological damage that Mason's role has on him, and we also get to see his desires for a new and fulfilled life.

Lyric is a talented songstress, but her life is with her family, and that suits her just fine. She enjoys cooking up a storm in the kitchen of the family bar, and then indulges her love of singing on the stage there too. She has such chemistry with Viper, but he is a man who holds himself back. She is more than grateful when he intercedes with an overly familiar (obsessed) fan. Rick is really the kind of character that you both love to hate and also pity – he is a stark reminder of how someone can spin a whole new reality in their head and how they damage their target.

I really enjoyed getting to know everyone and am looking forward to the next installment already.

I have not read any of the previous books in this series, however, I did not feel that it was necessary. Ryan did a wonderful job of explaining the secondary characters and their relationships.

Alina is a strong woman. She knows what she wants from life and has for a while. She's been able to tick off her list until she gets to the point where she's in a committed relationship with a true partner. Alina can't truly figure out why she's still single. She is happy for her brothers, who have found their partners, but in between their weddings, she finds herself wallowing a little. She is envious. And while she did just buy into a new business and is very happy, she can't help but feel that she's floundering.

Jay is a colleague of Alina's brothers. He has watched her grow and blossom but knows that she's off limits not only because she's the little sister of his best friends, but also because she's quite a bit younger. Jay is happy for his best friends, but also wonders how they were able to carve out time for a life when he has been married to his job. As he ages, he realizes that he wants to have what they have found.

Alina and Jay have great chemistry and an attraction that won't stop. They have an affinity to make each other better. While Alina is worried about an incident directed towards her, she is still able to build her relationship with Jay. As the mystery unfolds, while it was highly predictable, it was still fun to watch the men in Alina's life come to her aid.

I truly enjoyed the story, despite its predictable nature. It was sweet and fun. I did wonder if King was going to get a story, as I would be interested in his story. King's story seems to follow along with Jay's story to a point, but then branches off. I want to know more about what happened with King's story.

For the first time in a long time, Cara turned and went after what she wanted and believed with her whole heart that whatever happened was worth it, because letting this feeling go would be a loss she couldn’t live with and not regret the rest of her life. Her heart couldn’t shut off the dreams and possibilities she’d longed for once, lost, but wanted again. With Flash.

She stood in front of his door, stared at the grain in the wood, and sucked in a breath, found her courage, held up her hand to knock, but gasped and stepped back when Flash shoved the barn door aside and held a gun in her face. Again.

He immediately dropped it to his side and raked his free hand over his head. “Cara.” Her name came out on a relieved sigh that held an apology for pointing a gun at her for the second time in an hour. The relief turned to frustration. “What are you doing here? Go home.”

She dismissed the fact he opened the door armed, that he tried to send her away, his bare chest, even though she couldn’t stop staring at the wall of sculpted muscle, and unearthed the desire she’d buried long ago and unleashed it on him.

She closed the distance, went up on tiptoe, wrapped her arms around his neck, and locked her lips over his. Her body molded to his the second his arms wrapped around her and his hand landed on her ass. His fingers curled over the swell of her bottom and gripped tight, pulling her closer.

That spark between them flared to life as they kissed, his tongue sliding along hers. The ball of heat she carried low in her belly since she met him exploded through her system with every tempting taste of him. She wanted more and slid her fingers through his hair, held him close, angled her head to take the kiss deeper and gave herself over to him.

The flames flashed out the second he pushed her away and ordered, “Leave. Now.” He took two steps back, leaving her to catch her balance as he pulled his hands away from her shoulders. “Please.” The word came out strangled and forced from his throat.

She stared at him, wondering what she’d done. “What’s wrong?”

“This.” He held his hands out, realized he still had the gun in his hand, and tossed it onto the perfectly made bed. All she wanted to do was mess it up with him. She wanted him to let loose his reservations and kiss her again, because when they kissed nothing else mattered but the way they made each other feel.

“How can something that feels so right be wrong?” She didn’t get it. She didn’t understand why he’d kiss her the way he did, the way he wanted to kiss her, and say it was wrong.

The frustration in his eyes and the firm set of his lips came out in the angry swipe of his hand through his hair. “Damnit, Cara. This can’t happen.”

“Why? You want it. I want it. If we’re both willing…” She held her hands up in front of her like holding up an offering.

“I’m trying to spare you.”

That got her attention. She dropped her hands, cocked her head, and looked him dead in the eye. “What does that mean?” Because if he was sparing her a night in his arms, in his bed, and a chance to feel something as real as what she felt between them, she didn’t want or need his sacrifice. She just needed him.

“I’m not staying. As soon as I finish what I came here to do, I’m leaving. That hasn’t changed. It won’t change.”

Her heart cracked, the pain an echo of past hurts, but it didn’t change the fact that she wanted this. She would take tonight, however many nights Flash gave her, and be grateful for them, knowing that right now he wanted this as much as she did, but gave her the chance to back out and save her the pain and heartbreak she’d feel when he left.

She turned and went to the open door, feeling Flash stiffen behind her, hold his breath, and stare at her back everything in him wanting to call her back. That’s how close she felt to him, close enough to understand all he felt and feel it herself.

So she closed the door and turned back to him, knowing going in that this wasn’t forever but right now. Dreams of the future were wishes that may never come true, but right here, right now, she stood before a man she could have all those dreams with for tonight.

Moments like this were rare and sometimes never happened. She wouldn’t walk out on it because she couldn’t keep it. Instead she’d hold on to it, cupped in her hands like the precious gift it was and know that one day, maybe tomorrow, she’d have to let it go but it would always be a memory to savor, a piece of her heart that would remind her, once, she was loved.

Maybe not the forever kind of love she wanted, but loved enough to be told the truth.

A dab of this and a dab of that and you have a book with lots of elements that came together wonderfully.

Trying to dismantle a drug cartel, Dalton King spent five months in prison to create a cover story to fool even the stoutest doubter. Cara Potter is that person. She trusts no one, especially after the last person she trusted almost killed her.

As Dalton, aka Flash, gets to know Cara, he realizes she's the real victim in this war. She's tried to live a life outside her father's long shadow and somehow, she's always pulled back in. He realizes that she's doing what she can to limit her exposure to his way of life but knows that without her help, it may be impossible to put her father in prison for his crimes.

Cara knows that there's more to Flash than what he's telling. He's too smart, hardworking, etc. to get caught up in the drug racket, but she can't figure him out. Not to mention, her uncle is acting even more paranoid than usual.

This book took a lot of different strands and wove a story that kept me interested from the first chapter to the last, hating to put it down to even do my chores.

A Montana man always protects the woman he loves

No longer a prisoner, and protected at Hope Ranch, Ashley recovers and learns the tall, tempting federal agent may have a dark past, but it hasn’t destroyed his sense of honor.

As they shed past roles and find common ground, Ashley and Trigger can’t help but fall slowly, carefully, in love. But danger still lurks outside the boundaries of Hope Ranch, for until her crazed captor is brought to justice, and Trigger’s undercover past is laid to rest, none of them will ever be truly safe…

“What’s wrong?” Trigger asked.

The softness in his voice made Ashley look up at him. Way up. The man was so tall.

She found her voice under the wave of fear gripping her. “I know you don’t mean to, but you’re scaring me.”

“Look at me, Ashley.”

She sucked in a breath, found a shred of bravery from the tatters of her will, and raised her gaze to meet his.

“I will never hurt you.”

She fell into the depths of gray and flecks of blue in his eyes and drowned in the sincerity and promise she found there. Deep down, she believed him. Part of her needed to believe him, because she needed something real to hold on to before she sank any deeper into despair and the paranoia that everyone wanted to hurt her.

She nodded. “If he finds me, he’ll kill me.”

“He’ll have to get past me first.”

4.5 Stars

So this book is really one of those books that teeters between four and five for me. While I really loved the story and plot line and the fact that these two very broken and struggling individuals find strength and comfort in each other, I also had a few issues. The relationship borders on insta-love and, well, I always have a hard time with that in any story. They could've shared most of what they did without it turning so quickly into this "I love you and can't live without you" type of situation. In fact, in my opinion, it would've made them feel more real because of their crazy situations, but that's not how it worked out. Then there was the ending and the judge and I felt like it was a bit overboard and it sort of ruined the story a bit for me. The same thing could've come about just in a different way, but again not the way it went.

That all being said, I absolutely loved the way we get to know someone who went from being Hollywood's hottest star to this battered and abused woman who has been so worn down by her captor. Trigger, her somewhat rescuer, is already dealing with his own issues, but by being able to focus on hers and her focusing on him, they find this excellent balance especially with Adam as a buffer to help both of them find where they need to be.

I'll admit, I felt like we missed out a lot on the whole Caden and Mia story, but then I don't know if that is another series or not, so that could just be me. I will say the story does have a lovely little wrap up that makes it very clear this is the end of Beck and Ashley's story, which makes me wonder where the next book in the story will be going.

Mary Jo☆☆☆
Betrayed by a man she thought was a friend, Ashley Snow has been held as a prisoner for a year. Was it kidnapping if she willingly went with him? Was it her fault that she didn't see the signs that he was just a little left of normal? After being beaten, starved, and mentally abused for the past year, she knows that her will to live is fading. The last time she tried to run, her beating was so severe she was afraid she would die.

However, when he makes a mistake, she does just that: she runs. But not before grabbing the little boy who has suffered almost as much as she has. Running through the cold Montana night in nothing but heels and an evening gown, Ashley does her best to outrun the monster that will kill them both. As the snow falls, her energy wanes but she is determined to protect the child at the cost of her own life.

Beck Cooke has his own set of problems. As an undercover DEA agent, he has lived a life full of danger and regret. He has hurt people he was assigned to protect and the guilt of surviving is almost as bad as the guilt he carries for being unable to save the innocent.

As their two lives intersect, each must learn to trust their instincts and to make peace with their pasts.
