I hold back a laugh, but my whole body is tingling from the scent of him. From the pressure of his body against mine. I slide my arms around his neck and rise up to claim his mouth. It’s both soft and hard, and the moment his fingers twine in my hair and his tongue finds mine, that tingle turns into a torrent. A wild wave of need so intense that I really, really wish that it was bedtime or nap time or any sort of away time for the kiddo.

But no. His mom won’t be back for hours, and that means I have to wait to get what I want. Ryan knows it, too, and when he gently pushes back, a wave of desperation crashes over me, and I have to fight the urge to draw him close, strip him bare, and scar the kid for life.

As if he knows what I’m thinking—and considering this is Ryan, he probably does—he chuckles softly. I feel the low rumble in his chest more than I hear it. Our eyes meet for a moment, then he eases behind me and rests his hands on my shoulders, the brush of his thumbs on the back of my neck sending shivers up my spine.

His breath tickles my ear as he leans close, and I freeze when he whispers, “I want one, Kitten. Not today. Not next week. But one of these days you need to stop being scared.”

I stay frozen, expecting him to walk on. To say something else. To do anything but what he’s doing, which is standing behind me, his palm now resting lightly on my shoulder.

It’s like a reverse staring contest, but it’s one I’m determined to win.

And as David stands up, then plops down on his bottom, then laughs his little head off before doing it all over again, Ryan bends over and kisses my head. Then he walks away from me, crossing the room to grab David and swing him up into the air, sending the little demon into peals of joyous laughter.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fourth book in this particular series, but is firmly set in the Stark world – so we get to catch up with lots of old friends too.

A short novella is great, because the read and the rush are quickly achieved, but then there is that moment where it’s the last page all too soon. So, I absolutely loved the story, but cannot deny I would have loved reading 500 pages about these guys!

There is much to love in this book, as it shows us Jamie has not lost her wildness but has tamed it as she has grown older and closer to Ryan. He calls her Kitten, and it fits with her playfulness (romantically and otherwise) but also her skittishness and her defensiveness. The world throws much at celebrities and gives them challenges which others can avoid – which is definitely tough in this case, and, as the twist reveals, has a completely left field explanation.

Great epilogue revealing much happiness and a great dollop of karma!

By then, he’d been crushing hard, and it had only gotten more intense when Ollie had pulled him in to help on an FBI money laundering sting at the Mercury Club, a gay strip bar in LA. Trevor had wormed his way in as an actual stripper, and Ollie had posed as a customer. The operation had lasted a couple of weeks, and Trevor’d had plenty of time to watch Ollie in the audience. To see what he thought was a spark of interest in his friend’s eyes.

Maybe he’d been imagining it, but he didn’t think so. And that spark had lit a fire under his own desires, raising the heat from slow burn to full-on boil.

But real or not, Trevor knew damn well that Ollie was fighting it.

Honestly, crushing on a straight guy was a pain in the ass.

He could tell himself that forever, but it didn’t stop the tightening in his chest or the sparks of awareness that shot through him when Ollie returned carrying the folding chair. He was wearing paint-splattered jeans and a similarly stained white tee that did nothing to hide the fact that the guy was in great shape. He’d heard Jamie tease him for being skinny, but Trevor didn’t see it. Maybe before Trevor knew him, but if so, the guy had filled out. Ollie had always looked pretty damn delicious to him, with solid pecs, strong arms, and a tight ass that he really wanted to grab.

And so much for that whole dialing it back thing.

I love these delicious short stories from favourite series – and Stark Security is definitely one of my favourites. Getting to spend time with Damien, Nicky, and the rest of the team was lovely, even if the reason that they needed to join forces was another kidnap. If you have not read this series before, I am confident that after this book, you will be very tempted.

Ollie and Trevor... an utterly deliciously passionate and intense pair of guys, one who has known for a long time that the other is it for them and one who suddenly wakes up to the reality! I love that Ollie gets to understand how he mistook his love for Courtney and did her a great disservice – his best friends make sure that he can see how different his feelings are now, and how he needs to be open with Trevor. Nothing is simple, even when they finally get to act on their feelings, but we can rest assured that the whole team are standing by ready to support them both.

A truly lovely read, thank you, J. Kenner!

“Do I need to write you a song?” she snapped. “Do a tap dance? Or maybe you want me to tattoo the answer on my forehead. Some asshat wants me to say some magic words or else he’s going to kill me, and I. Do. Not. Know. What. They. Are.”

A tear snaked down her cheek, and she swiped it away, the gesture both angry and impatient.

“I can’t tell what I don’t know.” She spoke directly to him, and he took the challenge, moving closer until he was breathing her air and could smell the lilac in her perfume.

“That’s kind of my point, sweetheart,” he said, studying her expression. Every tiny tick, every movement of her eyes. “I think you do.”

“Excuse me?” She glared at him. The kind of look designed to melt a lesser man.

Too bad for her, he wasn’t a lesser man. “You heard me,” he repeated.

Sparks flew from her eyes. Not literally, but he could damn sure imagine them. He said nothing. Just looked back at her mildly, keeping his own temper in check. He was an expert at not showing his feelings, and that was a skill that would come in handy with Francesca Muratti. Probably more than his dead-on aim with a pistol.

With a huff, she turned to face Ryan, then Damien. “Assign another agent, or I’m firing the lot of you.”

“And here I thought you liked me. What with convincing them to let you go to the con.”

She whirled on him. “You insufferable prick. Don’t you dare—”

“Frannie. Calm down.” Damien’s voice was low. Reasonable. And Simon was absolutely positive that was the wrong approach to take.

“Are you fucking kidding me, Stark? The man just called me a liar to my face. I have no idea—zero theories—as to what’s going on, and he’s accusing me of… well, fuck him. Fuck all of you. Dammit.”

She blinked, her lips pressed tight together as she spun away, giving all of them her back. And for a moment—a very, very fleeting moment—Simon had the urge to put his hands on her shoulders and tell her that it would all work out.

“Frannie,” Damien said softly, “we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”

Her shoulders shook, and as much as she grated on him, he also knew that she was truly afraid. And because he was a damned idiot, his heart softened a little. At least until she spoke again.

“I don’t want him here.” The words were low. Barely audible. “He’s an arrogant prick, and I don’t want him in my home. For that matter,” she added, turning to look at Damien and Ryan in turn, “I don’t want anyone here. I got some stupid note, and I freaked, okay? But I shouldn’t have, because there’s nothing for me to tell. Nothing. Which means it’s a prank. A joke. I’m safe. So go. All of you.” She shifted, eyeing everyone in the room. “Go on,” she snapped, her voice rising. “Get out of my house.”

Nobody moved.

I love reading the 1001 Dark Night books – and never more so than when it is from a favourite series of mine. If you have never read any Stark Security, then feel free to enjoy this and then go back and get the full experience... because you are in for a treat! This novella is just a hint at all the goodness which awaits you!

Simon has, we discover, more reason than most to hate the fake glitz and glamour of Hollywood, so when his next Stark assignment is to protect an established actress from an unknown threat, he is not happy at all. Francesca isn't keen on him either, but she values her life and decides to trust him.

As they spend time together, it is clear that he needs to wake up to the woman in front of him, rather than the ghosts from his past... and we have the pleasure of watching it all play out in front of us. And it is a lot of fun, with a side of drama, a twist, and the romance and passion that J. Kenner knows all too well how to deliver.

Very, very enjoyable quick read with just enough tension, lots of untangling of previous wrongs, and starting of delicious, loved-filled rights – yum!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the fourth book in the series, but rather than concentrating on Devlin and Ellie, we are instead given the chance to see whether the chemistry between Ronan and Brandy has a chance. I would suggest you read the earlier trio of novels, but I think you could enjoy this story as a standalone and go back afterwards.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced, exciting mystery interlaced with a sizzling romance between two very unlikely companions. Brandy is an up and coming bag designer, who is Ellie's best friend. She is shy, and whilst she thinks Ronan is the most handsome man in the world, she considers herself very average, and so her crush will remain just that. Ronan works with Devlin, and his life is all about danger, and not making any commitments, in case he causes harm to someone he loves. In fact, love is utterly unacceptable in his life.

Obviously we know that somehow it will work out, but the unexpected complication of a murder with a twist and the ensuing drama makes this a really engaging read on a number of levels. I have to say it was a lot less stressful than Ellie and Devlin's story, but very entertaining, with a deliciously satisfying ending.

Ronan and Brandy are somewhat of an odd pair. They have this insane attraction, and both let it slip at their friend's wedding. But when Brandy finds herself in a situation that puts her life in danger, Ronan is not going to let his own personal agenda stop him from protecting her.

Brandy is a vivacious woman who has had bad luck in love. However, she is having fantastic luck in her business life. When Brandy finds herself the center of a murder investigation, she will have to rely on her friends to help her figure out who is killing in her name.

Ronan has lived his adult life seeking revenge. When he's just about to avenge his first love, he finds that he can't leave Brandy alone to face a murderer who's out for their own revenge. He has to make sure the love in his life, even if he won't admit it, will be safe. He owes her this, in his mind.

Ronan and Brandy will have to figure out if their past, present, and future can meld or if they are doomed to circle around each other for the rest of their lives. Logic and the heart sometimes don't make sense and in order to make sense of everything that's happening, the past will come to roost, the present will mesh their hearts, and their future is up for grabs.

This is a fast-paced story, and you will read faster and faster just to see how it all pans out. It's a great story and it was fun seeing the other characters from the previous books too. However, I would say that you don't necessarily have to read them in order to know what is happening in this book. But you'd be missing out if you didn't read the previous books.

In the rearview mirror, I watch as he gets off the bike, then walks toward me across the lot. I get out and meet him at the rear of the car.

“I haven’t got a single quarter,” he says. “Do you?”

I laugh. “Not a one. But I do have a credit card.” I’m about to walk over to that side and start the system running, but he gets there first, sliding in his card and then grinning at me as the machinery starts rumbling.

This particular car wash has a hose on each side of the stall. I’ve always assumed that was so that you don’t have to drag a dirty hose over your newly cleaned half in order to wash the other side. Now I consider another purpose.

Renly apparently has the same thought, because I see the gleam in his eyes as he goes to the far side, then grabs the coiled hose, his hand poised on the nozzle.

“Don’t you even think about it,” I say, going for my own hose.

His eyes widen, all innocent and guileless. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I burst out laughing. Then, still laughing, I pull the trigger on my own hose and spray him, accidentally getting him full-on in the crotch.

“Seriously?” he says. “Sweetheart, you are so going to pay for that.”

“Phhbbt.” I dance away from the spray he aims at me. “I would have thought someone in the military would have a faster reaction time.”

He aims again, and this time manages to completely soak the T-shirt I’d worn to work this morning. “Hey!” I protest. “This is a genuine discount bin Old Navy T-shirt. How dare you defile it?”

“Well, it fits you very nicely,” he says, letting his eyes skim over me in what I know is an exaggerated leer.

I glance down, realizing that since I knew I was going to be the only one in the office today, I hadn’t bothered to wear a bra. That’s something I can usually get away with, but in a wet T-shirt, even my barely-B-cup breasts look pretty perky.

I roll my eyes. “Perv.”

“I apologize for nothing.”

Renly is ready for a change. He is also ready to not have his life splashed across the tabloids. After leaving the SEALs and needing something more than what Hollywood can offer, Renly joins the band of Stark Security brothers. He's content to have a low-key life for right now.

Abby is brilliant. She's strong, competent, and most of all, she's Renly's childhood friend and crush. When she starts getting strange phone calls at all hours of the day and senses that something just isn't quite right, her business partner insists that she has some protection. The last person she expects is her childhood friend.

As they catch up, explore their old feelings, and find a new happiness, an outside force sets out to destroy their newfound happiness. Can Renly stop the stalker in time?

This was a short, fun read that adds to Damien Stark's empire. I loved reading this and really enjoyed Abby and Renly's story.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a wonderful novella set in the Stark world that many of us love! The 1001 Dark Nights series is both a great way to have some insight into a new series – and if that is you, then you have a lot of Damien and Nikki goodness to catch up on – and a lovely treat for fans like me!

As we know, Nikki recently made Abby a partner in her business, but even if that had not happened, Stark Security would be taking any threats against her seriously. When heavy breathing becomes a possible attack on her car, new recruit Renly is dispatched. He knows that she is his childhood bestie, but uncertain of her reaction to him. He need not have worried, she has a big heart.

Hearts are definitely at risk as these two admit to their childhood interest in each other, and then have to decide how they could match up their divergent feelings about relationships. Avid fans will know that J. Kenner can turn a reluctance to commit on its head, and does it with great style here.

Fun read, and lovely to be back with the Stark clan.
