It's so hard to say goodbye to characters that you've come to love... Ryan absolutely rocked my world, but Cereus demolished it. The conclusion to the Empathy series ties everything up, while keeping true to each of the characters. Cereus and Ryan are a dynamic, psychopathic duo who feed off of each other. Being inside Cereus's mind is confusing and exhausting and just crazy. All good things must come to an end...

Were you ears burning Ms. Dukey? Because I pretty much cussed you out – out loud much to my dog’s dismay – when I got to certain point in the book. It wasn’t nice either. I used words I don’t tend to use unless I’m really angry or upset and you made me both. I know you know what point in the book I’m referring to. You made me cry and the worst part about it was that I didn’t know who I was crying for. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, I absolutely loved this book. Then again I have been fascinated by all of the books in the series because the author creates characters whose insanity is horrifically realistic.

There’s not much I can say about the book itself for fear of revealing spoilers, but I’ll do my best not to let the cat out of the bag. Deadly takes place three years after Vacant and we learn that Ryan is still trying to get Cereus to accept who she is by owning her actions. There are parts of Deadly that are confusing, but they’re meant to be. The book is written from the points of view of Ryan, Cereus, and Blake and only one of those three is actually sane … maybe. We learned in Vacant that Cereus was not only sociopathic like Ryan, but she was also hallucinating – seeing and talking to people who weren’t there. Needless to say, her chapters are those that will make you question what the heck is going on, what’s real, and what is not. Don’t be afraid to reread passages to make sure you grasp what’s going on – remember, crazy people are narrating. Adding to the confusion is that the story begins in the present and jumps to the past so that you can see the events unfold that lead to Cereus and Ryan being where they are – pay attention to chapter and section headers because they will help reduce timeline confusion … maybe. Again, crazy people narrating. As for me, just when I thought I had it figured out, the story took a turn and I was wrong. Boy was I wrong and I was so very glad to be wrong.

I enjoyed getting to catch up with Mel and Blake, even if it wasn’t under the best circumstances. Mel’s visceral reaction to Blake’s betrayal was only surpassed by his reaction to her refusal to keep him in her life. If you have read the previous books in the Empathy series, then you won’t be shocked by the violence in this installment. If you haven’t read them, don’t start with Deadly because none of the books in the series are stand-alone reads. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, romantic suspense, and sociopaths and serial killers, then I strongly recommend this series. Deadly is an excellent addition to it and I love that it ends in such a way that it serves as a conclusion, or an opening for another book. Yet again Ms. Dukey, I am impressed with your mastery of the sociopathic mind.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active... I would want to change the script. I would watch films and think of ways they could of improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I'm not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I'm a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

Vacant by Ker Dukey is Now Available & Reviewed

Ryan

When two dark souls connect the draw is too dominant to ignore and the obsession of owning the only color to brighten my dark world too unrelenting to not obey. I left her alone so she could live a normal life but I was weak, how can she live a normal life after so much sinister chaos invaded her world, summoning her own darkness to the surface?

The depraved devil that is me now had an anchor, someone to venture into the black abyss with.

Normal wasn’t a path ever set for Cereus.

She was her Father’s daughter but my soul mate, even if I disputed ever owning one.

She was struggling without me in her life, the vacant ache inside her leaking out. I can’t not go to her, the need is too strong and like with all of my urges I embrace it.

Dark. Disturbing. Cereus goes off to college thinking her Uncle Ryan passed away in the fire at the end of the last book. Cereus seems like she is vacant.... Of emotion, of expression, and just about everything a girl her age should want. It's like when her Uncle went missing, so did she. The expression....lights are on and no one’s home. Vacant. A girl down the hall from her room makes her life miserable, and Cereus starts to envision herself doing very dark things to the girl. If you liked the first two books in this series, then this follows that same path. I enjoyed it, and I hope for more.
Overall entertainment is five stars!

I absolutely loved this series: Empathy hooked me, Desolate destroyed me, and Vacant filled the void left from the other 2 books!
Ryan – sweet, dark, twisted, beautiful Ryan – how I love thee. At the end of Desolate, I felt so empty – I needed more of Ryan and thankfully Ker gave me exactly what I hoped for!
Cereus has left for college, happily trying to be "normal" and learning what her "normal" really is. Mourning the loss of Ryan, she still feels him – and coincidentally hears his voice on a regular basis.
This story starts as Ryan is getting to know his long-lost brother, while also feeling an emptiness left in his black soul from the loss of Cereus.

What happens when Cereus is pushed to her limit? How does Ryan survive his instincts?
This was a fast-paced, action-packed, dark story with two souls that are destined to come together in order to survive.
Twisted and thrilling, this was an epic conclusion to a very well written series.

Truly a dark and gritty tale that was immensely entertaining. I have to say after the first book I had no idea how the author was going to pump out another five stars but I’m glad that she did. My head is still reeling from this book. Melody and Blake 18 years later are still the same, only with a teenage daughter named Cereus. Ryan leaves his psych ward apparently healed, all ready to face society. This book was a page turner, and I loved the action. Definitely a book worth waiting for. I absolutely love all five stars of entertainment. Please author, I need another!

WOW!!

I could NOT wait to read Ryan's story, and it was one h*ll of a ride from beginning to end! I'd say you want to read Empathy first for 2 reasons: The characters are all introduced there, and this is basically a continuation of that story. Not to say you couldn't read this without Empathy first, but I do believe it will enhance your “experience.”

Ryan, 15 years later, is entering the real world again. We get into his head, and we learn who he really is. You are alongside him and begin to understand his awful urges. I felt like I was an accessory to each and every depraved act he committed.
Even though Ryan is technically a serial killer, he has redeeming characteristics, which I've found lacking in many “dark” Heroes.
I've fallen, head over heels, in love with this man.

Beyond Ryan there is a thrilling story occurring with twists and turns! You don't know who to blame, what to believe, or who is really good/bad.

This is NOT a romance story, while love is something that is touched upon, this isn't a hearts and flowers story. It's the story of a crazy psycho learning to live and adapt to the world around him (for the most part).
And it was awesome.

Empathy by Ker Dukey Release & Review Blitz

Blake

I am a brother
I am a police detective
I am a contract killer
I don’t want to love
I don’t want to feel
I don’t want … EMPATHY.

They say some people are born with decreased activity in the front central lobe causing them a deficiency in empathy. Maybe that’s true about me but whether I was born this way or created in a moment of evil, empathy was something I didn’t possess until her green eyes met mine in the mirror and I couldn’t take her life.
I didn’t want to feel, didn’t want this woman in my life complicating how I lived but she was there at every turn. Sent to haunt me for my sins. Her light so bright she provoked a shadow from everyone she touched. When a job turns bad quickly altering my life forever I’m forced to feel. When nothing is making sense I’m forced to face truths I never would recover from. When life drowns you in its cruelty you don’t know which way the current will drag you or who you’ll become once you re-surface.

Melody

I was a daughter
I was a student
I was a victim
Did I have his love?
Did I make him feel?
Did I have his empathy?
When the actions of a soulless killer forces sorrow into my veins I never dreamed the man healing my wounds would be the one to leave the worst scar. His love would scar my soul. Scars are permanent; I will never feel the relief from them. Will I learn to live with them, remember why I have them and learn never to let him close enough to inflict more? Will I eventually cover them… like tattoos coating them with new memories, new love and new starts? I didn’t know these answers because the pain was too suffocating, the only thing I knew was they will always be under the surface lingering. He had scars too, from his sins. There is nothing that can cover them, they were too deep, too ugly, too dark and they marked us both forever.

Warning this book will mess with your mind. It's a dark, sexy, twisted romance novel. 18+ only

This is one of those books that make you take a step back to really process what you just read!

There are 3 POV's: Melody, Ryan, and Blake – and I loved getting into the heads of each. Melody is a college student, she’s a bit of a loner but befriends Ryan in a class. Ryan normally keeps to himself but reluctantly starts talking to Melody due to a class assignment.

Blake is Ryan's older brother, he was/is Ryan's caretaker (after the loss of father), and is pure Alpha male deliciousness.

And the story starts, but it’s SOO much more!

"No-one is ever the same when evil visits, but how you let it sculpt and define you is the key to surviving it."

This story had everything- dark aspects, a touching romance, crazy suspense, and some HOT erotic scenes!

I was continuously second guessing (sometimes triple guessing) what I thought I knew, I couldn't put this book down.

The psychological situation drew me in, the characters kept me interested (the HOT erotic scenes were an added bonus), the "action" kept me guessing, and overall I was just blown away.
