The Reluctant Countess is the second installment in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. There is little to no confusion if reading out of series order or as a standalone. It's been a year since I read the first in the series, How to Be a Wallflower. Now I want to go back, reread that novel, then reread this one again.

I haven't read much historical romance lately, the suppression of the era sometimes makes it difficult for me to read, due to a few factors of today's political climate. I had put off reading this novel for some time. As soon as I opened it, I was hooked. Eloisa James' stories always draw me back to this genre, making me want to read and read every historical romance book I can get my hands on. I appreciate how Eloisa James bridges the gap between the historical accuracy of the era, where women were seen to have no power, with today's modern take on feminism, giving the heroines as much power and independence as the era allows.

Lady Yasmin forever has a cloud of scandal surrounding her. Not only is she not entirely British – she's French. Giles takes issue with this, especially how Lady Yasmin's mother is Napoleon's mistress. Yasmin has fled France with a trail of scandal in her wake. She's learned from her mistakes, earned patience and understanding from the weight of rumors that aren't even true, so she never passes judgment on others' mistakes. She is strong, independent, and compassionate after the life she has led.

Giles doesn't want to like Lady Yasmin, but he just cannot seem to help himself, which makes him cranky. Then again, with the monster of a sister he has, it's no wonder he's so high-strung.

Giles knows what he wants, even if he doesn't like it. Yasmin knows her worth, and she's going to make Giles work for it. Work for it, Giles does.

Now if only Giles' sister would just... go away. The villainess of the tale was frustrating to read but a good source of frustration. Sure, it wasn't entirely logical, something that made me white-knuckle my Paperwhite, but it sure did have the pages flying by.

Read in one sitting, now I'm hooked. Off to reread both books in the series, while trying to convince myself I don't need to, yet again, reread Eloisa James's entire backlist.

How to Be a Wallflower is the first installment in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. Our hero is tied to the My American Duchess standalone.

As a feminist, I've always struggled with my desire to read historical romances. While it was more befitting of the era to be dependent, I always felt it wasn't in everyone's nature, no matter what society dictated. I appreciated the viewpoint of independent women during an era of dependency. Eloisa James always manages to bridge the gap between historical believability while resonating with today's modern woman.

A business woman, our independent Miss Cleo truly shined, walking a fine line by fulfilling her family's wish to enter society, while doing so in a way to make sure she wasn't the belle of the ball.

Our American Hero, Jake is in England to purchase an emporium, the very same emporium our business woman Cleo has purchased. Cue a slight bit of angst, where Jake battles Cleo, only to realize he wishes to have the woman instead. Cue massive pining with a side of insta-love on our hero's part, but Cleo is anything but an easy catch.

As someone who is not a fan of insta-anything, Jake's immediate fixation on Cleo was balanced nicely by Cleo herself. She was of a more logical nature, taking her time to allow the connection to grow, where finding one attractive did not mean future matrimonial bliss. A plot device that I generally do not enjoy was balanced, allowing Jake's personality to shine through.

With a great deal of banter, witty humor that never falls over the edge into slapstick territory, Eloisa James always entertains me. The characters were original and endearing. I was personally able to empathize with Cleo, while enjoying Jake's character.

The romance wasn't flowery and over-the-top, allowing the plot to be the focus. The romantic tension built to that of a smexy nature, detailed scenes that did fade-to-black during certain scenarios. The perfect mix of romance and lust, while staying focused on the plot itself – a little bit of this and that to appeal to the masses.

Highly recommend to fans of the author and historical romances. Every time I read a novel by Eloisa James, it never fails to make me wish to start at the beginning of her backlist and make my way through rereading them all over again.

Wilde Child is the sixth installment of The Wildes of Lindow Castle series. While it is possible to read the novel as a standalone or out of series order, I strongly suggest against doing so. The couplings of all of the Wilde children, along with events from past books are brought up on the pages. If a new reader found this as delightful to read as I did, they would end up spoiling the previous installments for themselves.

FINALLY.

We hear from Jane.

Born within a marriage, Lady Jane is seen as the daughter of a duke. However, all know her mother left her in the cradle, abandoning her as she ran off with her lover, Lady Jane's true father. With two curses hanging over her head, in a society built on stringent rules, Lady Jane is neither biologically related to anyone in her household/family, while not truly illegitimate as she was born within the marriage, but she is also the daughter of an unfaithful, abandoning mother who divorced a duke.

Lady Jane is a stunning beauty, whispered about in ballrooms. Those with titles see her as a mark against their reputation should they fall for her. While others see her dowry and title as a way to climb up in polite society.

Having heard it all since her birth, those fair features of her birth father signifying how she is most certainly no Wilde, Jane lets it all wash off her back. Since she will not be welcome into polite society anyway, why not do as she wishes, tossing the rules and living life as she sees fit. In the true chaotic, zany fashion of the rest of the Wildes.

Thaddeus is a stickler for rules, never welcoming even an air of impropriety. The son of a duke, acting as the duke for the majority of his life. His father leaving him and his mother behind to cohabitate with his mistress and chosen children. Thaddeus must live by the letter of the law, trying to outrun his father's reputation. He must marry a woman who will help not hinder his reputation.

Having gone through two of the Wilde daughters on the marriage mart, the third is not a proper lady, but that doesn't mean Thaddeus isn't drawn to the Wilde family, wishing for the family structure and love he missed out on as a child, but it is Lady Jane Thaddeus cannot seem to ignore.

A budding actress in britches, Lady Jane is trying her hand at being Hamlet, putting the production on for her family to enjoy. Jane dressed as a bloke, her best friend, Otis, dressed as Ophelia. These zany elements bring levity, a delight to read. While not too over the top, it is a pleasant escape for everyday stressors.

Jane and Thaddeus are polar opposites, bringing out the best parts of one another. Thaddeus forces Jane to see that she has a future, if only she'd reached out to grasp it. While Jane shows Thaddeus the adventure, the laughter, the light and love, and the hope that it doesn't have to be lonely at the top.

Partnership and joy are at their fingertips, if only they don't get in their own way.

Lighthearted and warm, dry wit and zany humor, well-meaning and villainous relatives, sharp-tongued society mavens and strong support systems. Wilde Child displays polar opposite themes, just like the Hero and Heroine of the tale.

Highly recommend to fans of Historical Romance. Eloisa James is at the top of my favorites list in this genre. Broody and happy characters, a menagerie of animals, the plight of being at the top, romance mixed with dry wit, all of Eloisa James' series have been a delight to read.

My Last Duchess is the prequel installment in The Wildes of Lindow Castle series.

Can it be read as a standalone? Should it be read as a prequel prior to the other titles? Yes to both questions. However, the emotional impact will be greater if you start at the first novel in the series, Wilde in Love. Why? The reader’s connection to the characters will be greater. It will also remove the sense of insta-love from this novel.

After reading about Hugo and Ophelia for an entire series, the ultimate parents and grandparents, the family-oriented duke and duchess, we finally see how their romance unfolded. We’ve witnessed the coupling of their numerous children, witnessed the joy of the birth of their grandchildren, and nearly swooned from the undying passion of their mature love… now we get to experience it from their beginning.

Many readers will think the journey too quick, too short, and the love too instantaneous. I’m one who advocates against insta-love at every turn. However, I think this truly worked for Hugo and Ophelia. We readers already know they’re happily married, the greatest support system for their ragtag grouping of children. We’ve seen it in the aftermath, now we had the pleasure of experiencing in the now.

The Wilde men are known for falling hard at first sight, so why should their patriarch be any different?

The duke’s sons notoriously wed women similar to their stepmother, so it was no surprise that Ophelia made Hugo work for it, made him sweat, made him nearly beg. She was a strong woman, independent but with a deep sense of longing to belong to something greater. Her maternal instinct was as big as her heart. Hugo was also surprisingly sentimental, lonely, and needing the deeper connection of a love match instead of a contractual marriage.

Read in one sitting, My Last Duchess was a joy to read. The warmth and happiness between a widow and widower infectious. The pages flew by, and suddenly I was finished, and then the desire to begin anew settled over me, the intense need to reread their children’s stories.

Beyond recommend to fans of historical romance, especially to those who are fans of Eloisa James and the Wildes. I cannot wait to read whatever the author publishes next, always at the top of my recommend list for Historical Romance.

Say Yes to the Duke is the fifth installment of The Wildes of Lindow Castle. While all the books are connected, each book features a new narrator (Wildes sibling) and can be read independently of the series with little to no confusion.

Viola really tugged my heartstrings at the start of the novel. As much as her family adores her, she still feels the sting of not truly being one of them. She is the stepchild of the duke, automatically understanding how the Ton feels about her, even if her family loves her just as much as their own blood. Via her mother, Viola is the stepsister of past narrators, and the half-sister to all the younger siblings, and this is a cross she carries alone, refusing to hurt her mother or her stepfather by voicing how she feels deep down.

Shy, insecure, but with a backbone of steel, Viola was an easy character to identify with – an every woman, so to speak, without coming off as a wallflower always in distress and in need of saving.

A brutal scene at her first ball shapes Viola for years to come, tainting her season with fear. Obviously, the first 'safe' man she meets is a man of the cloth. Since she feels undeserving of a better match, not truly feeling as a duke's daughter, not only does the vicar appear safe, but she believes he is a husband fitting her lower station.

This realization strengthens her backbone, so the clandestine meeting with the Duke of Wynter during her presentation to the Ton doesn't have her retching into the nearest lemon tree planter. Eavesdropping, Viola hears her deepest insecurities mirrored in Devin's words, which takes away all the pressure.

Devin is a cold man, exacting after his rearing, on the hunt for a bride to do his ducal duty, and Viola's stepsister fits the bill, because she's the 'real' daughter of a duke, all of which Viola overhears.

The angst, the frustration, the heart-clenching emotions, Viola opens the heart of the reader and thrusts her emotions into them. Devin redeems himself over the pages, as Viola gains her sense of self. They both balance one another while making the each other stronger.

I adored the emotional journey, which had plenty of unexpected witty moments that brought much-needed levity.

The only con I can honestly think to note is with the pacing. Say Yes to the Duke is a very looooonnnng book. Not necessarily in page length, but it reads long too. I felt we had met the expected conclusion, and glanced down to notice that I was only at 58%. Honestly, I expected a few more hours, where some unnecessary conflict would take place, which would sour the entire novel for me. Miscommunication is a pet-peeve of mine, as is unnecessarily strife or angst. Don't fret, while there is a slight bump, those two hundred pages simply meandered to showcase other characters via Devin and Viola's points of view.

Aside from the detour, which did feature other romances I was curious to learn about, I adored the novel. Highly recommended to fans of the author and lovers of historical romance. I eagerly look forward to the next installment and anything Ms. James publishes next.

Say No to the Duke is the fourth installment of The Wildes of Lindow Castle. It's best to read the series in order to get the most emotional investment and entertainment value. However, I do believe it would be easy to read as a standalone novel with little to no confusion.

Lady Boadicea feared her mother's reputation would follow her during her debut season, so she behaved prim and proper, when she is anything but. Betsy longs to be independent, not understanding why she must abide by such stifling rules for women. Understanding how the rules of society dictates your reputation, Betsy has used their rules against them to appear the opposite of her passionate mother who abandoned her to run off with a man who was not her father.

Betsy was a character who was easy to empathize with, her personality traits strongly resonating within me, making the pages fly by at an addictive pace. These more serious traits give a different vibe to the novel than previous installments. Sometimes the humor can come off as silly in past books, but it suited the characters. This vibe translates into the content, with Betsy's view of the world fueling the overall more mature and serious feel of the novel.

Betsy refuses to walk in her mother's steps, after having her mother's actions used against her, even by her own sisters. She has her whole life mapped out, until she meets an unexpected kink. Love. Unpredictable love.

Coping with the affects war had on him, Jeremy is suffering with PTSD. Seeking solace from his best friend, North. North just so happens to be Betsy's brother, putting Jeremy and Betsy in each other's orbit.

Their personalities balanced each other perfectly, drawing dormant parts out of one another. So much tension and banter, real human emotions. Jeremy feeds into Betsy's need for adventure and excitement, while her presence soothes his wounds.

Without hitting upon plot points, I was hooked from page one, not stopping until I hit The End. Say No to the Duke was an engaging, endearing journey, where I truly rooted for the hero and heroine, believing their connection, finding unexpected humor in their bantering interactions.

Recommended to fans of Eloisa James. This was a novel befitting the author and the series. While not perfect, it did have the usual flaws that I've come to expect and accept from the author.
