Training Buds

Sara York

Dixon Carter’s heart shattered into a million pieces, his whole world imploded as he watched his husband make the moves on another guy. They weren’t just holding hands; they were kissing out in the open, not even trying to hide their love affair. Of course Dixon shouldn’t be here as far as Bryan was concerned. He’d flown home on leave, hoping to surprise Bryan, but he was the one who’d gotten the surprise of his life. This was supposed to be a big weekend for them. He’d made it, been accepted into training that led up to him eventually going into the Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training in Coronado, California. Bryan had said he’d wanted to move with him, but after seeing his husband shove his tongue down another guy’s throat, he wondered if anything the asshole had said had been true.

Dixon drew in a breath, thinking that nothing would ever be the same again. He shook his head, trying like hell to comprehend what was happening. Had he really seen Bryan and that stranger kiss? Why the hell would his husband do this to him? He watched, wondering if he were mistaken, but Bryan pulled the other man close again, kissing him like he meant it. Dixon closed his eyes and tried not to fall apart. How the fuck was he supposed to recover from this? He and Bryan had been together for eight years, since their sophomore year in high school when Bryan had moved to town. Bryan had stood by him through basic training, but he guessed Bryan had a different view of what commitment meant.

Dixon’s heart twisted as he grabbed his pack and lifted his hand to catch a cab, but he lowered his arm, shaking his head. He wasn’t going to run from this. He sure as hell wouldn’t leave his stuff with Bryan. No chance in hell would he allow the fucker to continue using his truck, or taking drives in the restored Mustang Dixon had worked on since high school.

He trailed Bryan and the new guy to their apartment, watching as the pair kissed and hugged before going through the front door. He waited on the street a few minutes before following them upstairs to the third floor of the walkup he and Bryan had picked out when he’d been on leave a year ago. God, just the thought of Bryan in their place, kissing that guy, made him want to hit something.

He slid the key in the door, hoping to catch them, and praying he didn’t. When the door swung wide he didn’t hear any sound for the first few seconds. Relief flowed through him, and then he heard someone grunting, the sound twisting through his gut, making him sick. Dixon knew he and Bryan were over for good.

Pain lanced his heart and he tried to breathe, but the air was too thick and his chest ached. He drew in a second breath, this one almost taking him to his knees as Bryan cried out like he was really enjoying himself.

How long? How many others?

The questions played through his mind as he moved to the bookshelf that held the signed baseball his grandfather had given him before he passed away. His bills were in a neat stack beside the ball and he grabbed those too. The TV and stereo weren’t important to him. Besides, he’d be living in the barracks once he moved to Coronado so things like TV’s didn’t really matter much.

While he was alone in the den, listening to his husband and some stranger get it on, he looked around the place, noticing the sweatshirt he’d given Bryan for his birthday tossed to the floor and the Navy mug he’d shipped for Christmas chipped and holding pens instead of being used as a vessel to drink from. The end of this relationship hurt like crazy. He couldn’t believe how painful anything associated with Bryan could be. The man had promised him love, companionship, and forever. Bryan was here taking care of things at home, but he’d really just been playing house with whomever decided to fill his bed.

Absolution by E.M. Leya & Nicole Colville

For most of his adult life, Jon dedicated his life to the church, finding solace in helping others, but there has always been something missing. Up until now, he's been able to push that aside and move forward, letting everyone think he's happy and doing what he loves.

Ash doesn't want to continue with life. Left behind to live a cold and empty life after his partner died in a tragic accident, he doesn't see any future for himself. He goes through the motions of living, but inside he’s ready to give up. All that's left behind is the anger and hurt he has inside him.

Finding comfort in each other's company, the two men struggle with emotions, guilt and fears about the future. Confiding only in each other, they grow closer, both denying the bond building between them, and a past that won't let them move on.

Although this is book two in the collection, it can be read as a standalone or the first in the series.

“I’m not drunk, I know what I’m doing. I want you here.” Jon lifted up on his elbow, keeping his grip on Ash’s hair tight as he moved closer to him. “Do you know how long I’ve wanted to fist this hair in my hand and press my lips against yours?” Jon’s mouth was almost on his, and Ash grabbed hold of his shoulder, keeping the inch separating them from getting any smaller. “Since I first saw you. I’ve waited so long for you.”

“Jon…” Ash wanted to be strong, he really did, but everything in his body fought with his brain, shouting at him to shut up and let this happen. “This is still wrong.”

“I know,” Jon whispered against his lips. “But nothing’s ever felt so right before.”

I normally do not read books that religion is a main theme in the story, those books aren’t my cup of tea. However, I read the first book in this series and loved it and felt that I would give this book a shot even though I knew religion would be a focal point. Ash’s fiancé was killed in a car accident and he isn’t dealing well with that, he is running. Jon joined the church as a father 11 years ago, at times he feels like there is something missing but he has always pushed that feeling aside to help and care for people. As time moves on Jon knows what is missing from his life, he just doesn’t know how to deal with that and if he should make the move to have the full life he wants but doesn’t think he deserves. Ash and Jon start a friendship that gradually leads to them both wanting more but not sure how to go about that because they both has so much guilt and doubt and things from their past that they need to move on from. I was able to connect with both characters and could feel both of their emotions. At times the story moved a little slow but that slowness was a great build up. We also got to see Killian and Zach from the first book and also Killian’s crazy mom and dad too. This was an emotional story and I loved it, I loved watching Ash heal and Jon deciding to do what he needs to be happy. Highly recommend this book.

Characters: Well written and believable
Sex: Yes
Religious: Yes
Would I recommend to others: Yes
More than one book in the series: Yes
Genre: M/M/Romance
Would I read more by this author: Yes

Jon has been a priest for ten years. He's devoted to God and his parish. Lately he feels like something is missing from his life. He shouldn't want for anything but he does. He longs for a life that can't have. He hates how lonely he feels while those around him are living and he's just existing.

Ash comes to Ireland for his friend, Zach. He doesn't want to be there watching his best friend be happy with his husband, Killian. Asher is just getting over the unexpected death of his partner, Derrick, a few months before.

Jon offers to help Ash, be there when he is ready to talk. While their friendship grows so does the unexpected feelings they have toward each other.

Great follow-up to Horizontal Analysis. I enjoyed the inclusion of Zach and Killian into Jon and Asher's story. There was so much build up in this story. It's the ultimate taboo read for a catholic girl and I loved it. At times I wanted things to progress much faster but I loved the path it took. It's emotional and sexy. I really enjoyed this read. Can't wait for more from this duo.

Following straight on from the previous book in the series, this takes us to Ireland, where Killian's family live. Here we revisit the couple, although mostly Killian; Zach is a faint figure for some reason.

The parish priest Jon, is having a crisis and the sight of Zach's grieving friend Ash at the wedding reception throws all his doubts into bright relief. Through the book we get to understand the issues that a celibate gay catholic priest would feel and how he plans on resolving the issues Ash has made him face. Ash is struggling with his own demons, although we get to see less of the impact that maybe we do with Jon. I thought that this was done well, but it was for me, overly long. I also struggled with some of the pronoun issues, which made working out which of the two of them the his, him, he referred to at that second. Parts of it were without a doubt, scorchingly hot and incredibly romantic – and very addictive reading! I enjoyed the side stories, there was a decent plot, I just think it could have been more concise.

The topics were serious, dealt with carefully and with style. I am interested to know where this series will go next.

Horizontal Analysis by E.M. Leya & Nicole Colville

When Zachary is sent to London to audit a very high profile company, the last thing he expected was to meet the man of his dreams on the flight there.

Killian's life has been hell for the last few years, but meeting Zach is the breath of fresh air he needed, even if he is half his age. He didn't expect things between the two of them to escalate as fast as they do.

One night of passion isn't enough, but there is danger in pursuing more, especially when fate throws them a curveball they never expected, and with Killian's ex ready for the attack, they could lose everything, still, with the chemistry between them, staying apart isn't an option.

With an attraction like neither has experienced, they are willing to risk it all, fighting the world around them that wants to keep them apart. Challenged in ways the two couldn't imagine possible, they must figure out how to hold on to something they know they might never find again.

Taking a deep breath, Killian held Zachary’s hand in his, not wanting to let his touch leave him so soon. Their eyes still in each other’s strong hold, neither one breaking away, not once.

Killian could feel how much they both wanted each other, he wanted to ask Zachary if this was okay, but he didn’t. He moved quickly, pressing their lips together for a kiss, being careful not to freak Zachary out too much and giving him the chance to pull away by taking it so cautiously. After all, this wasn’t something Killian did. It had never been his style to get off with strangers, he always knew the men, always had confidence they wanted him back.

His lips were soft, pliable against Killian’s mouth, not moving, but not pulling away either, so Killian pressed harder, sliding his lips gently against Zachary’s. He smelled divine, and he tasted even better. Killian shuddered when he felt the first response from him. Zachary’s lips pressed firmly against his, moving against him, his tongue suddenly and unexpectedly caressing Killian’s lips apart. They both moaned when they joined for the first time, unsure, but eager for more.

Zachary shifted closer, holding them together with his tight grip on Killian’s arms. He had to have him in his arms, he had to crush their bodies as close as they could, so he slid his arms free and wrapped them around Zachary, pinning them chest to chest. He felt so good, so firm and toned, but the way he just melded into Killian’s frame made a full body tingle run through every inch of him.

Their tongues fought against each other, their hands running over each other’s bodies, pulling and teasing the other quickly into a white-hot state.

Breathless, and hard as hell, Killian pulled back, looking into Zachary’s eyes, seeing how wide and bright they were, how his pupils had blown.

"Zachary…"

Shit! He didn’t want to stop, but he didn’t know this kid. This kid! Killian shouldn’t be acting this way. He shouldn’t be kissing this young man so blatantly. Things were moving too fast for him, but… He’d never wanted anyone like he wanted his blond piece of American apple pie.

Horizontal Analysis starts out in the first-class lounge of an airport. The older man sees the younger man, and it's instant attraction. I enjoyed the start of the book – found it light and sweet, and a lot naughty. But when it progressed to insta-lust/love/attraction/chemistry without any buildup, I lost interest. [They both kept thinking and saying how they've never felt this way about another person before, without a meaningful conversation and a whole lot of groping, and they weren't talking about sexual chemistry. They were feeling hearts and flowers upon meeting one another – a stranger. I don't believe in love at first sight, so that was difficult for me to read after that. That's on me, not the author. But I felt I should mention this as it might be similar for other readers.] I'm a reader who needs to know the characters first – wine and dine me before you take me to bed. The beginning of the book, first 4 chapters or so, is entirely made up of sex. I couldn't buy the connection between the characters because they knew nothing of each other, and I (the reader who was inside their heads via the narration) knew nothing of them either. So I felt an obvious disconnect.

Was the sex hot? Hell, YES!

I'm not a prude. I love the down and dirty as much as the next reader, but it was too fast, too soon for my liking. So I'm going to say the story was fun, sexy, & far removed from realistic. But it was just not to my tastes. I'm going to leave it at that.

I was offered the next book in the series from my review group, and I'm going to give that a try.

Recommended: Romance readers who love the naughty side of a book, and they are impatient and want instant gratification.

This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning and it never stopped, I didn’t want the book to end. Dream job + dream man = dream come true right? This was a great story, it had passion, instant love, drama, angry ex, and hot sex. I loved Killian from the beginning, I felt his pain from the start and his lust and want for Zach from the moment he set eyes on him. Zach was sweet and innocent and you couldn’t help but love him. This is a must read story, there were some twists that I saw coming but ended different that I thought and of course I was in shock and shed some tears. I truly enjoyed this book and will re-read it again. Thankfully I have the second book in the series ready and waiting and I can’t wait to dive in and hopefully catch up with Killian and Zach.

3.5 STARS
Here is what I knew going in: Insta-love and lots of sex.

I am not a fan of insta-love but Horizontal Analysis jumps in right from page one. If you can overlook that, it really isn't a bad read. The sex scenes (of which there were plenty) were extremely HOT. Each orgasm was better than the last, a man in his forties going more than three times in night without much of a break, (I call bullsh*t) and there is some cheesy dirty talk but together as a whole it works. This is FICTION and anything can happen. Sometimes I have to remember that when reading.

Is someone worth taking a risk for? Giving up everything you know for just a tiny shot at happiness. That's what Killian and Zach are unknowingly searching for.

I was entertained enough to finish in a few hours. The sex scenes kept me going, the suspense at the end was a nice little surprise. Not bad for my first read from this pair of authors.

3.5* review
I enjoyed this read, and the underlying premise behind the story, although I did have a few issues. Crazily the biggest issue for me was probably totally silly in anyone else's eyes, but as an accountant, I felt that the repeated mention that Zach struggled with the foreign currency was a bit ridiculous. We are talking pounds sterling, which are divided into one hundred pennies ... not some weird hexadecimal currency! And even the dollar to pound exchange rate varies between $1.5 - $2 : £1. Millions of tourists manage this each year, but not a highly intelligent man? Sorry, but that annoyed me, a lot! It was also somewhat crazy to send a 21 year old half way around the world to do an audit ... but hey, I could choose to suspend belief to an extent....

The story itself, is quite clever, and although the depth of their feelings was somewhat hasty, I could accept that as neither of them were of that nature, it must have really bowled them over. I was with Zach though questioning Kilian's previously terrible choice!

Overall I enjoyed the series and would read more by this team of authors whose works I have admired and read avidly in the past.
