“What do the notes say?”

She pulled her lower lip between her teeth, stalling. She stalled some more when she said, “I can’t always read them.”

“Halle,” I warned.

Her shoulders deflated as she released a surrendering sigh. “At first, they were just numbers. They started right after my mom died. The number twelve kept popping up. But a month later, it changed to an eleven. Then a ten. Then a nine.”

“A countdown.”

“Yes. Every month for the last year, he’s been counting down. And now we’re at number two.” She leveled an accusing gaze on me. “And you’ve known since the first time you laid eyes on me.”

“Not the first time,” I said, slightly offended. “What makes you think they’re death threats? They could mean anything.”

“Because the other note he leaves is pretty explicit. It’s just one word. Payback.”

Ah. Now we were getting somewhere. “Halle, what happened seventeen years ago? What changed your life so dramatically? And who wants payback?”

She shook her head and looked away, tears shimmering in her eyes.

I leaned onto my elbows and put a hand over hers. “Halle, I know this is hard, but please trust me.”

“It’s not that. It’s not that I don’t trust you. You’ve earned that and then some. But if I tell you what happened, what I did, you won’t want to have sex with me anymore.”

I almost snorted. Clearly, she didn’t understand the male thought process.

But I needed to chill. I was pushing her too hard. I wanted her to bend. Not break.

The furball started whimpering at her feet. Halle picked her up, nuzzled her, then set her in the box she’d brought along with a dry towel from the bathroom. With a full belly, the furball settled immediately and went to sleep.

Halle straightened and walked over to stand in front of me. “Is that a yes?”

“No,” I said, taking in every curve she had to offer. She smelled sweet, like jasmine. “It’s a hell yes.” I put a hand on her hip, the heat from her body soaking into my skin as she straddled me.

With hesitant fingers, she tested the abrasion on my jaw. “Are you sure this is okay? You were hit by a truck yesterday.”

“I was sideswiped by a truck. Huge difference.”

She nodded and grew thoughtful as though making calculations in her head. Now was not the time for math.

“I’m pretty sure you’re a supernatural being,” she said, completely serious. “That you’re not real and will disappear as soon as all of this is over.”

“I have several friends who are supernaturally inclined. I am not one of them. And I’m not going anywhere.”

She buried her fingers in my hair and covered my mouth with hers. I’d never welcomed a kiss more in my life.

I adore the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones; honestly, I love anything written by Darynda Jones! This shorter story is no exception.

No need to catch up on the series if this is your first, but I would highly suggest checking it out.

Eric has an ability, of the paranormal variety, to see a person's cause and time of death. While this power can be useful, it cannot be shut off. Choosing to use this power for good, Eric can save people!

This has everything: mystery, humor, seriously sarcastic humor (worth mentioning again), romance, quirky characters, and hellhounds. I would expect no less from this author!


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
I am a huge, huge fan of the Charley Davidson series, and am delighted that these novellas give me another taste of that world. I do think that you would understand it best if you are up to date, or at least read a few, so that you get the premise of the world we are entering – such as Aunt Lillian and her muumuu dresses!

Eric has a talent which I am not sure anyone would really want – he can tell when someone is going to die. Not just an estimate, but an absolute time and method. This story gives him a number of opportunities to use this knowledge to good – and after the past he has had, he will take the wins.

Summoned by an old college buddy, Jason, he makes his way to what I have to say sounds like a super cool bar – with a road running through the middle to give bikers a chance to ride through and show off their rides. Here he sees two people who are not long for this world unless he does something about it. As we get to see him uncover the truth for Halle, we also see how the two of them complement each other – and have to hold on for the ride in the hope that our wishes match their destinies.

“What are you doing?” a smooth, deep voice asked from behind her.

Sia spun around, fear and guilt seizing her lungs, though she couldn’t fathom what she had to feel guilty about. She clutched her phone to her chest, her gaze darting about. Because that surely was a great look on her. “Nothing,” she said after a moment. “What are you doing?”

Donovan’s dark lashes lowered over irises shimmering softly in the streetlamp’s light as he studied her. He tilted his head to one side, causing a lock of dark hair to fall over his brow. “Is everything okay, Doc?”

Forcing a smile at that point in her life was like peeling taffy that had melted and then cooled again off her car dashboard, but she finally managed to do it. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?” She tried to cross her arms over her chest and lean against a stack of crates. She failed and almost landed face-first on the pavement.

He rushed forward, but she caught herself and smoothed a hand over her hair. “How’s Elwyn?” she asked, deflecting. Her cheeks burned, and she thanked the powers for low light. Blushing was another human trait she despised.

After a long moment, Donovan lifted a shoulder. “You’d know better than me, you being her medic and all.”

Medic. Wasn’t that a military term? Had he served? Donovan had been the first member of the group she’d met when she walked up to the main house of the Loehr’s compound, the one constructed to keep Charley’s daughter safe. Knowing that Charley wasn’t around to contest her proclamation, Sia had pretended to be a friend of Charley’s from school. She’d told them that Charley had asked her to keep an eye on Elwyn and offered her services. A man named Garrett Swopes, another of Elwyn’s guardians, had hired her on the spot as Donovan watched their interaction.

Coincidentally, Donovan was also the first of the ragtag team she’d treated when he laid down his bike to avoid getting beheaded by a truck that had pulled out in front of him. And yet, even after all these years, she still knew so little about him.

Her phone pinged, and she read the text from Benji. Run, Sia. And believe nothing.

4.5 stars of Darynda Jones brilliance

This is another fun novella from the Charley Davidson series, and I would most definitely say that it is a real treat for a fan, but could leave a new reader a little confused. The writing is fabulous, but I do believe that it is much easier to make sense of the scenario if one has the backstory.

I absolutely love all the stories in the series, and am loving that we are getting more... a drip, drip to get us (I am hoping) to another novel in the future! I felt that the first part of this one was a little bit slow, as people need to get up to speed, and then we enjoy the faster pace that really increases the tension.

I am not going to give away any of the story, but we do get to meet up with most of our old friends and have some insight into the upcoming battle.

Oh the joy I felt when learning I could revisit Charley Davidson's world!

I must say I absolutely LOVE the main series, but haven't read any of the novellas that occur after the original series was wrapped up. Having said that, a few of these characters I recognized while others I cannot recall.

This was a small bite, nothing too extravagant, but it was a quick (I definitely want more) story with an interesting situation.

Donovan has been tasked with keeping watch on Sia, who he just so happens to have a wee crush on. He's human, has a toe in the paranormal world, but doesn't have any of the cool powers to defeat evil. Sia is something else... that's all I will say about that.

While I was happy to come back to this world, I will say this seemed a little rushed. I didn’t feel like Donovan was fully developed and wanted more of his backstory. If you're new to Charley Davidson, this is a great "taste" of the paranormal world, of the demons and spirits, and ultimately, love!

“Intruder!” Kyle said from behind him, a day late and a dollar short.

Quentin glared at him, and Kyle stepped back reflexively. Then he refocused his glare on Amber.

“What?” she asked, her hackles rising as hackles are wont to do.

“What are you doing here?” Again, his signs were sharp with irritation.

She barely recognized him. He’d hardened—in all the right places. His shoulders had widened more than most twenty-seven-year-olds. He’d always been muscular, even when they were kids, but either he’d been hitting the gym, or he’d been magically photoshopped. The hills and valleys that covered his body to exquisite perfection could be seen through the long-sleeved T-shirt he wore, his biceps stretching the seams to their limits. And the jeans, the ones with a few holes here and there, were not a fashion statement so much as a favored pair of work pants.

“Ms. Kowalski?” Kyle said.

Quentin turned to him, and Amber caught a glimpse of two things: the profile of his steely buttocks that had developed as much as the rest of him, and a particularly well-placed rip in the worn jeans that showed part of the indentation in his left ass cheek. The fact that he wasn’t wearing underwear was a bonus. How could anyone she hated so much be so startlingly drop-dead sexy? Life was not fair.

Then she realized something. He’d heard Kyle. Quentin had turned when Kyle spoke, and she wondered if he’d finally gotten a pair of hearing aids. They’d never helped him that much before, so he never wore them, but technology had advanced a lot since then. Maybe they had more powerful aids now that could help him hear.

She snuck a glance but didn’t see any mechanical earpieces. Interesting.

When he turned back to her, she couldn’t get over how much he’d changed. His hair was shorter now and a little darker but still a rich, tawny blond. And he’d either started wearing it spiked, or he had bedhead. Either way, he was even more gorgeous than before. Full mouth. Straight nose. Deep blue eyes like the cobalt on a ceramic bowl.

Damn it.

I was so excited to revisit Charley Davidson's world, and this was the perfect little story to do it with!

I want to mention that every single story I've read in the 1001 Dark Nights series has been the perfectly sized (on the shorter side), complete story, and has yet to disappoint.

Anyway, back to the story...

If you've read any of the Charley Davidson series, then you know who Quentin is, and you may also remember Amber. (If you have not read the series, what are you waiting for? It was fantastic!)

I won't spoil anything, but I loved everything about this: the supernatural angle, the investigation, the snarkiness, and the characters.

If you're looking for a quick, yet complete story or if you'd like a glimpse into this series, then definitely check this out.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
Oh, what a great treat to get even a little return to the world of Charley Davidson! If you have not read any of the series yet, then this will give you a little insight into the complexity of the storylines, but I do not believe would spoil your enjoyment of it. To fans of the books, this is a cheeky little return to the crazy, without delving too deep – and we always knew that Amber and Quentin were destined to meet again.

For a short story, this packs a lot of punch in its demonic plotlines – a really clever double bluff in a way. But the real treat is finding Quentin is on the demon's tracks and this leads him back to Amber. Neither of them has forgotten the other, but only he knows why he disappeared and what happened to him. It makes for quite distressing reading, and wait till you find out about Rune!

Amber doesn't care about any excuses Quentin may have, she still loves him, and once the danger has passed, she is going to make sure he doesn't believe anything but that fundamental truth.

Oh, I do hope you enjoy this little dip back into Darynda Jones' fun and fascinating writing.

This is a quick, fun introduction to Charley Davidson’s world. Fans of the series who have watched Amber grow up will remember Quentin, her teenage love interest. In this book, Amber and Quentin are all grown up and they meet unexpectedly while hunting the same demon.

I think an Amber-focused spinoff series could be fantastic. Amber will remind fans of the Grim-Reaper Charley at the start of her series. Amber seems a little more grounded and a little less kooky – but she’s confident and engaging. Quentin is an unexpected treat in this novella – he brings a unique supernatural skillset to his demon hunting. The chemistry is fabulous between these two, even if the story feels a little insta-love. I really enjoyed this short read and I look forward to more books about Amber and Quentin.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
I can’t quite believe this is the end. I think the series is ready to end but I’m not sure I’m ready to say goodbye. As a final story, this is one of the most exciting in the series. The farewells in this book made me cry but a few of the twists really didn’t sit well with me. I like the slightly ambiguous ending – though it might have been a bit more clear if I hadn’t blubbered through the last twenty pages.

Charley and Reyes finally feel like grownups in this book and they finally feel like a solid partnership. And there’s even a couple of scenes where they actually feel like parents. It probably shouldn’t have taken thirteen books to get to this point, but they are good together here. The goodbyes to the rest of the characters are a little bit easier because of all the prophecies about Beep and her army. I may have cried with each goodbye but I’m still holding out for Beep’s spinoff series.

The supernatural elements of this series have been getting stranger and stranger with each book. This time, I feel like things are a bit simpler. Charley and Reyes have to stop the demons who are taking over their city. Demons that Reyes created and Charley let loose when she freed Reyes from the god glass. There are still a few too many WTF moments that I refuse to analyse too closely, but this is a more streamlined story than the last few books.

There are a few elements of this story that still don’t sit well with me. But after binge reading the series over a couple of months, I will admit that I’m probably way too invested in this series and these characters. Charley’s banishment is a complete disappointment. It feels like a repeat of Reyes’ God Glass excursion in the previous book and aside from providing Charley with material for new jokes, it doesn’t add much to the series storyline. Just as disappointing are the revelations about Uncle Bob in this story. We learn things about him in this book that contradict everything we’ve know about him from the start of the series.

So, I have a few reservations about this final book but I still found it difficult to say goodbye to Charley and her allies. This feels more coherent and more carefully constructed than some of the most recent books in the series. I’ve enjoyed these characters and after thirteen books I’m still enjoying the author’s fresh take on Urban Fantasy writing. I can’t wait to read what Darynda Jones writes next.


Dawn – ☆☆☆☆☆
I'm super sad that this is the last book in the series. I have grown to love the gang and Charley’s wisecracking ways. I will truly miss them.

I think Summoned to the Thirteenth Grave has finished the series perfectly.

Of course in the series there is always a secret or two that needs revealed, and since Charley is a multitasker, she deals with all this while trying to save the world.

For me, I felt this book was an emotional rollercoaster, maybe because I was preparing myself to say goodbye to a bunch of characters I truly love.

I just loved this book, just as much as I have loved the rest of the series.

It's always bittersweet to reach the end of a beloved series, it's difficult to say goodbye to characters that you've come to love. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end! Book #13 (fitting!) in the Charley Davidson series was the perfect conclusion to an imperfect series.

While many questions were answered and surprises revealed, there were also little things that weren't fully resolved. I can only hope for a spin-off, as I need to see what happens with Beep in the future.

I found myself very emotional throughout the book: laughing at the interactions, crying at times, floored at others, nervous about the outcome, and truly upset this is over.

I don't want to say goodbye to everyone, but it's time for the story to end. I was satisfied with the ending, but always want more!


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆☆
This is the thirteenth and (sob sob) final book in the series. I have read them all over the last couple of months and have no doubt that they will join my series-to-be-reread list, because sometimes rereading after knowing the ending can make subtle points clearer... not that Charley is renowned for subtle, to be fair!

I cannot spoil the story, so really just want to reassure the ardent fan that this most definitely needs reading, and the newcomer should scoot straight off and start at the beginning, or be endlessly confused (and miss out!). It was great to see how each character had developed and become someone of importance to the team and to us – and yes, there are a few punches still to be pulled, so be ready! There are both earthly and supernatural events for Charley and Co. to engage with, and her humour is somewhat tested as she has to stop some even more bad things from happening.

I kind of hope that there are spin-offs from this series, as I have hugely enjoyed the crazy – and all the chapter sayings – but at the same time, I will be happy with Darynda Jones bringing a whole new world to light.

Sarah – ☆☆☆
At this point in the series, I have completely given up trying to follow or understand the mythology/theology behind Charley, Reyes, and Beep’s identities and purpose. I’ve stuck with the books for the characters, Charley’s investigations, and the sarcasm that saturates each story.

This book is one of the slowest in the series. Charley spends most of the book buying time while she tries to figure out how to save her husband and not kill him. I’ve grown tired of the god stuff, so I found myself skimming some of the theology heavy passages and enjoying the characters on the earth plane in Albuquerque. Garrett, Osh, Angel, Cookie, Amber, and Uncle Bob make this story enjoyable and I love that Pari is back and on good form. While Charley has become a bit of a caricature of herself, I’m enjoying the growth and increasing complexity of the other characters. Charley’s investigation on Pari’s behalf is interesting and very exciting at one point.

The ending is another cliffhanger. It did make me cry but the end is very similar to another recent story, so I can pretty much predict a similar resolution in book thirteen. I’ve requested book thirteen but my commitment to this series is waning and I’m enjoying less and less of each subsequent book.

This the twelfth book in the series and if you haven't read any of them yet, then you are in for a huge treat... but please go and get book one and come back here in 11 books' time. You absolutely need to read them in order to have any appreciation of the story! I am assuming you have from now on in!

The end of book 11 was very cliffhanger-ish, so I was very grateful that I had this ready to go. I really feel for those people who have been reading this series as it was released, as that would be so grrr... a little like how I feel now, as the ending of this book is also pretty dramatic, and book thirteen is yet to be published!

After the god glass episode in book 11, we now have to discover, along with Charley, just what has happened to the heart of Reyes... and it is fascinating watching it all play out – and to be honest, I really didn't know where it was going until the very end. Very clever mixture of dreams, daydreams, nightmares, trips between planes, and other troubles thanks to the destruction of the god glass prison. Through it all, Charley manages to temper the danger with her lovely brand of crazy humour and love of coffee. Oh, and as she is now in better control and definitely prepared to use her powers, there is some pretty clever stuff happening, as well as some surprising encounters with Michael and his boss!

All in all, an action-packed book, with all the signature elements we have grown to love and expect, and some good twists too. Roll on book 13 – because we all need to know!

Well, I think this is my favourite from this series so far.

Reyes! He is not the same as he has been. I'm glad we are still getting to see loads of him in this book though.

As always, Charley is working a case, this time it's a bit different, it's a bunch of gifted people who are being murdered. As well as dealing with a load of personal stuff. However, Charley always makes me smile with her sarcastic ways.

I truly can't wait to get my hands in the final instalment as I have loved every second of this series.


Shelby – ☆☆☆☆
Book 12 – GAH! This series has been a roller coaster. It started off relatively light and easy, as we go along the series gets more complicated. This story was one of the more difficult books, and I had a hard time getting through it. That's not to say it was bad, because that's not what I mean, it was a struggle to watch Charley deal with the situation.

As always, I loved all the characters: Cookie, Ubie (Uncle Bob), Amber, Osh, Garrett, and Pari. They are crucial to the series, and the provide just enough "lightness" to counteract all the deep/dark going on elsewhere in the story. Charley's cases are both very intense. Pari may be involved in a murder, unbeknownst to her. The second case is a rash of strange murders, people are just dead but have strange scratches and burns on them, the only similarities are... (I'm not telling you, that will spoil the story!)

On top of those, Charley has a limited amount of time to figure out what happens when a god comes out of the God Glass. All in all, this book was packed to the brim with activity. I can’t forget to mention the good vs. evil theme in the series, but especially in this book. If you recall, there was only one god of Uzan left on Earth and Charley may or not be ready to do what she needs to protect the world.

I don't want to spoil the book, but there was a major aspect that I wasn't a fan of. There was one character that wasn't as prevalent and that did affect my enjoyment. Also, the ending? It KILLED ME. I'm afraid to read the 13th and final book, but I need (NEED) to see how this all plays out!

Eleven books in and I’m afraid I can’t quite wrap my head around the complex series story arc. I was on board with the grim reaper thing and I almost got my head around the god thing, but things have gone a little bit crazier with each book and I’m not sure I’ve fully digested the last few additions to Charley’s identity and purpose very well.

Anyways. I’m enjoying the parts of the story I can follow. The investigation into Reyes’ adoptive parents is all kinds of creepy. I love his adopted brother too. I kinda wish Reyes and Charley would sort out their trust issues and work together but they are the ultimate dysfunctional star-crossed lovers, and at this point their chaotic relationship is almost amusing.

As the plot gets more and more complicated, there are moments I question my loyalty to the series. At the start, each book actually finished. I don’t like the cliffhangers at the end of the most recent books and this one has the most dramatic non-ending yet. I’m still enjoying the author’s writing style and the humour at the heart of the series. And I really like the non-celestial characters. Cookie and Amber get more interesting with each book and Uncle Bob is an increasingly complex character. Garrett, Angel and Osh are fabulous.

I’m almost ready for Charley and Reyes’ story to be over. I’d like to see a spinoff that fast forwards twenty years to give us Beep’s story but I’m not sure there’s much further the author can take this series as it is.

This is (not surprisingly) the eleventh book in this series – and I have to say that I am grateful that I am reading these close together and know that I have the next one waiting for me on my Kindle... because the pace has certainly picked up, and I have a feeling that everything is about to explode!

Although there is a lot of high tension and drama in this book, there is also some absolutely wonderful humour. It felt to me like the real Charley was back, as rather than being frustrated at every turn, finally she is getting to understand the extent of her powers. She struggles with just how significant they are, but Reyes et al do their best to explain. Rest assured that there are also some lovely intimate moments between the two of them too – as they explore their intimacy in different planes... hot!

The Fosters (who stole Reyes as a baby) turn out to be even more awful than we could have ever expected, and it is not difficult to understand why Reyes was fighting with Charley, asking her to stop investigating. The forces on her side, and those who are not, are slowly coming together and the tension is rising.

I daren't say more, as you should experience it directly, but I definitely recommend that you do as we are coming very close to getting the answers which have been building over every book.


Shelby – ☆☆☆☆
Book 11 in the Charley Davidson series was a complicated, twisted story. This installment has added many intertwined story arcs and character complications.

Of course, Charley is still Charley, although she is maturing as we go along. Unfortunately, the relationship between her and Reyes is just as dysfunctional as ever, and I just hope that they figure this stuff out soon.

The investigations were pretty deep this time, and mostly involved minors. The Fosters are now on Charley's radar, as she's been hired by their son to figure out WHO they really are. So, not only is she looking into them on her own time, but now she's getting paid to get the dirt she really wants to know. Their involvement in missing children is pretty intense, and some of this investigation actually turned my stomach. On top of that craziness, Amber is also involved with a crazy stalker – which didn't end the way I thought it would.

Besides these cases, which tie into the paranormal stuff, not much happens in the bad gods/purging the world of evil that Charley is supposed to be doing. The end, of course, was a game changer and I need to see how everything plays out.
