Sink or Swim by L.A. Witt

When need meets fear, can two very different men find common ground?

Alhazar Bukhari spent his Navy career in the closet. Now he’s retired, divorced, and hungry for the love he’s never had a chance to experience. He tries to put his faith in Allah to bring the right man into his life, but it’s hard to be patient after all this time.

Chaplain Dylan Pedersen spends his days counseling Sailors, and his nights with men he doesn’t know. Months after finally escaping an abusive relationship, he’s terrified of anything more than a physical connection. Maybe it’s a sin, but he’s too lonely to not let men into his bed, and too scared to let them into his heart.

When Alhazar’s civilian job brings him aboard the USS Fort Stevens, and his daily prayers bring him into Dylan’s chapel, the chemistry is instantaneous. Sex and friendship quickly evolve into more, but Dylan’s too haunted by his recent past to be the man Alhazar wants. Alhazar needs love, Dylan needs time, and if they can’t find some sort of balance, they’ll sink before they ever have a chance to swim.

I have read several in this series. I do not believe the you need to read the previous books in this series in order to understand what and who are in this story.

Alhazar Bukhari is a civilian now; however, his job is still within the Navy. He has a great co-worker, but both are used to enduring abuse or inappropriate behavior directed towards them. Bukhari is nervous on his first day when he goes to see if he can do his daily prayers in the local church. He is used to being turned away, ridiculed and treated like less than mud. Imagine his surprise when the chaplain accepts him with open arms – no judgment and even allows him to use space in the office. Bukhari isn't sure if it's genuine or not, but he's not going to argue.

Dylan Pedersen is the local chaplain. Despite having just gotten out of a very long-term relationship, he realizes too late how isolating and horrible that relationship really was. To make matters worse, mutual friends of his and his ex are trying to get him to give his ex another chance. Nobody truly knows the abuse that Dylan put up with for years. When Alhazar walks into the chapel, Dylan catches himself staring.

What follows is a friendship that develops into more. There is a steep learning curve for both men, as they both were previously married to women and both have children. You could see the premise coming up, but there's nothing you can do but push forward. Even with the confrontations and miscommunications, you know that the capacity for both men to love is huge. This was a sweet story about forgiveness, love, determination, and acceptance.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the eighth in the series, and whilst it will help to ground the story if you have read the others, I do think that it could standalone – mainly you would miss out on the fact that the base has undergone some major changes in terms of acceptance and understanding, but there is still plenty of journey to go.

There are some absolutely fascinating issues dealt with in this book – and I have to admit that I am not usually one to mix religion with romance, the books which combine both often have a negative view of sex, love, and acceptance. But I found that it generally was an interesting element to the story, and definitely a very open and honest viewpoint, rather than a preachy one. What I am trying to say, is that if you were reluctant in the face of the subject matter, I think you should be patient and hopefully will find it refreshingly positive and interesting.

Both Dylan and Alhazar have lived through marriages in spite of being gay, and have now come to a point where their children are old enough, and their careers established enough that they live their lives more openly. Not entirely in Alhazar's case, but both are divorced and have had real relationships. Indeed, Dylan is still escaping the clutches of his abusive ex.

This is a bit of a slow-burn of a story, with no major dramas, and two older men who are really feeling out what they do want from a partner, or not want, and I was getting a little tired of the hesitancy. However, they suddenly have a mission and that starting of a group and purpose to their futures made the story round out well, and leave an opportunity for good things to happen in a future installment too.

I loved this book. Alhazar and Dylan’s story is sexy, sweet, and wise. It is the story of two older men, both survivors of the US Navy’s DADT years, who find each other while working on the same ship. It is also the story of two devoutly religious men of different faiths who find a way to make their lives work together.

I love Dylan and Alhazar together. The men come from different places and hold different beliefs – but beneath the surface they have so much in common. Like some of the other couples in this series, both men are in their forties and I think their experiences, their children, and their previous relationships make them richer and more complex characters. I love the combination of sexual chemistry and deep friendship and I love their slow-burn romance. Even though Dylan is Christian and Alhazar is Muslim, they share a sense of religious devotion that binds them even more closely together.

I have to admit that I was nervous about the religious aspects of this story. Having grown up with Christian fundamentalism, my atheism is hard won, and I have strong negative reactions to most religion. However, both Dylan and Alhazar practice flexible and inclusive versions of religion that I found inoffensive. And there really isn’t anything preachy about this book. Both men wrestle a little with religious guilt and shame, but they only judge themselves.

I liked getting to catch up with characters from previous books and I loved Alhazar’s relationship with Travis’ daughter, Kimber, from book two. I think this is one of the strongest books in this series and I really loved Dylan and Alhazar.

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn't lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don't tell Lauren. Wash Out by L.A. Witt

He’ll never be a SEAL, but he might win the Marine’s heart.

Casey Olson has always known he was destined to be a Navy SEAL, and the best day of his life was when he was accepted into training. The worst day was when a snapping bone ended his dream.

After three combat tours in five years, Logan Carter left the Marines and self-destructed. Now he’s sober and, thanks to a forgiving ex with friends in high places, has a promising job as a civilian contractor. All he has to do is stay on the rails and out of a bottle, even when his demons won’t leave him alone.

Logan likes his job, and he really likes the gorgeous man at the next desk. Casey tries not to check Logan out, but who is he kidding? From the start, despite their best efforts, neither man can resist the other. Sizzling chemistry leads to sex so hot they can both almost forget why they’re stuck in this office to begin with.

It would be perfect, except Logan can’t stop reliving wars he’ll never forget and Casey can’t stop grieving the SEAL he’ll never be. And they’ll never have a future together until they can make peace with their pasts.

I was honestly a little hesitant to read this one, as it brings back secondary characters from previous books and makes them the primary ones. I was pleasantly surprised that these characters were so successful in their own roles.

Logan has debilitating PTSD. He was dating another fellow soldier, but we all saw how that ended... after getting himself under some control and after he stopped drinking, he took up sketching his nightmares. It's a way for him to process his dreams. Because he has such a difficult time in his PTSD, getting a desk job in a place that is conscious about his PTSD, it helps to create a sense of security for him. He knows that he can't mess this chance up, because it might be his last. Logan is the more mature of the two characters in this book. I felt that he had grown a lot since the last time I saw him.

Then you have Casey. Casey was injured while in SEAL training and hates that people keep telling him that he's a lucky solider to have never been able to complete the training and be sent to who knows where. His sensitivity to the comments are slightly overdone and it felt old after a while. But once he was able to process his reactions and see that there may be some merit to them, his character developed much more.

Casey and Logan have an office romance. But it's their individual struggles that, for me, made the story. I think that Casey is almost too immature to really put someone else first in a relationship. So that was a stretch for me. He had only one thing in mind for almost the entirety of the book and once he had his realization, the book was coming to an end. I wish we were able to see him develop more in his "after" role.

Overall, this was a sweet story about two soldiers trying to find their way. I enjoyed it.

This is a gentler addition to the Anchor Point series. Familiar issues like alcoholism and PTSD return but the storyline here is simpler and Logan and Casey’s work and personal lives are fairly uncomplicated.

Like characters in earlier books, Logan suffers from debilitating PTSD and he wrestles with an alcohol problem. Casey’s problems are new to the series – a serious leg injury ended his dream of becoming a SEAL and he is struggling to imagine a life beyond that dream.

I really love Logan. The hot mess ex from Afraid to Fly redeems himself admirably here. He is honest and reflective and self-aware. Casey feels like a bit of a snowflake, constantly taking offense. He feels young and immature and the happy for now (HFN) feels necessary because I’m still not sure he’ll be able to put Logan first at any point.

I have mixed reactions to this series and I’m just as conflicted about this book. It is simpler and much lighter than the last couple of books, but I miss the military politics and details from earlier books. Casey and Logan don’t really work for me in a happily ever after sense, but they make for a crazy hot, time-limited, office fling.

Once Burned by L.A. Witt

Captain Mark Thomas’s world has been tossed on its head: A long overdue but still unexpected divorce. A promotion out of left field. Last-second orders to a ship where careers go to die. As the dust settles in his new home, he barely recognizes his life, but he sure recognizes the loneliness creeping in.

Diego Ramírez wants nothing to do with the military or its men. Not after the Navy burned him both literally and figuratively, costing him his career, his health, and ultimately his green card. Now working illegally in an Anchor Point bar, he keeps the military and its personnel at arm’s length.

But after a single moment of eye contact across the bar, Mark and Diego can’t resist each other. As a one-night stand quickly turns into more, Diego knows he’s playing with fire. Now he can stick around and let things with Mark inevitably fall apart, or he can run like hell and wonder what might have been. One way or another, Diego knows he’s about to get burned. Again.

Mark and Diego are an ‘opposites attract’ type couple when they first meet. Diego is trying to stay under the radar because despite how he was wronged by his country and the military, he wants to be in the US – he wants to be able to support himself and send money home to his family.

Mark is picking up his life and moving forward. He was married and now he and his ex-wife are much better friends than they were a couple. It was refreshing to see such a healthy relationship come out of an unhealthy one.

Mark and Diego had a more friendship chemistry – I didn't really get heat from their relationship. However, they were great at distracting each other. I wish they had more chemistry, but watching their relationship develop over time was also something that added to the story a lot.

I liked how Mark and Diego took risks throughout, both for themselves and each other. I think that showed their level of commitment. Overall, this was a good story about redemption, love, loss, acceptance, and allowing yourself to believe that there is good out there.

Angie – ☆☆☆
I have read all the previous books in this series but it is not necessary to read this book. I hate to say it, but this book really missed the mark for me. I really, really do not like just pages and pages of inner monologue. I need dialogue between characters!! I also dislike it when the same thing is repeated over and over again; let's not beat a dead horse folks!!! This book had both and it made me lose interest fast. Don't get me wrong, the chemistry and sex between Mark and Diego is hot but that wasn't enough for me to love the book. Mark and his poor excuse for cheating and then Diego's unrealistic issue with his green card were the final straws and made this book a not so good one for me.

Going Overboard by L.A. Witt

It turns out love and sex come easy when you’re falling for your best friend.

Second-class petty officers Dalton Taylor and Chris Ingram have been best friends since coxswain’s school. Now they’re stationed together in the harbor patrol unit of NAS Adams. They’re content as friends, but secretly, they both ache for more. Neither makes a move, though; while Dalton is out and proud, Chris is closeted—even from his best friend.

Then another coxswain’s negligence nearly drowns Dalton. After a taste of how easily they could lose each other, neither man can keep his feelings hidden anymore, and it turns out love and sex come easy when you’re falling for your best friend.

Things aren’t just heating up between the friends-turned-lovers, though. The Navy is investigating the accident, and the harbor patrol chief isn’t going to let his star coxswain go down for dereliction of duty, even if saving him means throwing Dalton under the bus.

As the threats and gaslighting pile up, Chris and Dalton need each other more than ever—as shipmates, friends, and lovers. But if their chief prevails, the only way they can save their careers is to let each other go.

Chris and Dalton have been friends forever. Dalton has been out in his life for a long time. He doesn't hide who he is, but he secretly wants his best friend, Chris. Too bad Dalton truly believes that Chris is straight. Maybe don't know each other as well as they think.

When Dalton is injured and almost dies, Chris can't help but make sure that he and Dalton move to the next level.

This was more about the military issues for each character. Dalton is trying to do the right thing but also knows that he is being discriminated against. He wants to be with Chris but won't let his accident derail Chris' career.

I enjoyed this story a lot. I liked that it was about more than the romance. I liked that it was fast paced, and you wanted to root for the couple and Witt gave you someone to truly hate. I do wish that we had more of a conclusion – it felt a little rushed.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆☆
This is an exciting story about the consequences of cover-ups and corrupt leadership in the US Navy. It’s also a wonderful friends-to-lovers romance between two men who have always had each other’s backs but who have always hidden their true feelings.

I have to admit that I hesitated before requesting this story because I really didn’t get on with the last few books in the series. Fortunately, this fifth story feels fresh and exciting. This is easily the most original story in the series and the plot is much more complicated and action packed than the last couple of books.

The story starts with Dalton’s harrowing near-death experiences and then follows him through the subsequent fallout and investigation. I found the internal Navy politics both fascinating and terrifying.

The romance in this story is fantastic – I love it when friends-to-lovers is done right, and this is just about perfect. I’m really glad that I continued with this series or I might have missed my favourite book yet.

Angie – ☆☆☆
I have read all the books in this series and this by far is my least favorite. Honestly, I was bored and found myself skimming and just wanting the book to be over. I usually love stories that are friends-to-lovers but even that couldn't keep my interest in this book. I felt that there was so much detail about the job that the love story got lost in the mist. I am hoping this is just a one-off for the series and the next one will be better. I'm sure others will love this installment, but it just missed the mark for me.
