When It Rains by Elle Keaton

Beto Hernandez’s objective: Break the human trafficking ring plaguing Skagit once and for all. He’s not in Skagit to make friends—he's kicking ass first and taking names later. Maybe. He crosses paths with an intriguing and sexy man, the first in years to spark Beto’s interest. It’s ultimate bad timing, though; no one in Skagit can be trusted.

Who is Carsten Quinn, and where does he fit in Beto’s investigation? Beto tries to stay away from Carsten but their undeniable chemistry keeps him close.

Carsten Quinn survived years in hell to return to “normal life,” and he has his own mission in Skagit. The only problem is he’s hiding, not living anything like a normal life. When his closest friend is severely injured it’s up to Carsten to finish gathering evidence to put some very bad people behind bars and he knows all too well he can’t trust anyone, especially not the law.

Ironically, the law appears anyway, in the form of a sexy cop he can’t stop thinking about; when Carsten’s past comes back with a vengeance, he has no one else to turn to.

Is happiness too much to hope for? Are Beto and Carsten too different and too broken to trust anyone, much less each other?

“Another?” asked the attentive bartender.

“Sure.” The drink had relaxed him a little; he felt his shoulders release. Instead of worrying, he focused on the cheesy ’70s ballad currently playing over the sound system, tapping his fingers on the bar top. Then he eavesdropped on the conversation the bartender and the stranger next to him were having.

“Long day?” The bartender did that thing where he kept his hands busy like he was only half paying attention, wiping down the bar, straightening glasses.

“Long cold day after a long cold night. Does it always rain like this?”

The other man’s voice was low and smooth. Carsten liked it. He turned his head so he could see what the guy looked like.

Holeee moly, he was Carsten’s walking wet dream. The stranger wore a dark suit. It had to be tailor-made for him; the jacket stretched perfectly across his shoulders. It was paired with (from what Carsten could see at his angle) a crisp white shirt that made his electric-blue tie pop.

“See something you like?”

Carsten blinked, belatedly realizing the man was speaking to him, his intense gaze pinning him to his seat. Carsten’s sneaky glance had been not sneaky at all; the Lone Wolf had gone to his head.

“I, ah, we don’t see a lot of suits and ties here. In Skagit, I mean, not this bar, but I don’t come here that often, so I wouldn’t know about that. Do you?”

The stranger was sex on a stick: glossy black hair cut short against his skull, sharp cheekbones and plush—plump lips. Lips that had a half smile gracing them at the moment.

The man chuckled. “Did you just ask if I come here often?”

Carsten rewound what he’d said. “Oh crap, no, I just meant… Shit, this drink”—he motioned at the half-empty second Lone Wolf—“is stronger than I realized.”

“Well, when they let twelve-year-olds drink…”

“I’m twenty-four,” Carsten protested.

“I’m the pope.”

“I am! How old are you?”

“I’m old enough and had a long enough day that I don’t actually care if you are underage.”

Suit took a sip of the drink in front of him. It looked like bourbon or whiskey; Carsten knew nothing about drinks, good or bad.

“I’ll ask you the same question: Does it always rain like this?” Suit asked.

“This is bad.” Carsten agreed. “I heard somewhere that fish were swimming across roads. That’s some serious rain.”

Suit frowned as he took another sip of his drink. Carsten was intrigued; he wanted to ask why he was wearing a suit when no one in Skagit did. “This is nothing like LA.”

“I’ve never been there. I mean, it’s way warmer there, of course.”

“It’s the dark and gloom here, then add weeks of rain. I’m starting to feel moldy.”

“You sure don’t look moldy.” The words were out before Carsten could stop them.

Suit didn’t smile, but he also didn’t punch Carsten.

Carsten motioned to the TV. “At least there’s TV we can watch and know there are sunny places out there.” The TV host was talking silently about some exotic dish she was about to try.

Carsten’s stomach rumbled. He hadn’t eaten since lunch. “Where would you go if you weren’t here?” The drink, on top of the lack of dinner, was making him bold. Carsten wasn’t shy per se, but he usually kept quiet and in the background as much as possible.

Suit glanced up at the TV. “I’ve never thought about it. My job keeps me busy.”

“Come on, there’s got to be someplace. Not in the US. Quick, pick one.”

Suit looked up.

“Don’t think about where, just say it.”

“Ireland or Iceland. I’ve always been fascinated by their mythologies, and it would be interesting to visit the land they came from.”

“Both those places are cold,” Carsten pointed out.

“Italy. Happy now?”

Carsten nodded. “All I’s…”

“Dios, it’s your turn, smart guy.”

It was foolish of him to dream about leaving Skagit… but something about the stranger had him dreaming about where he would go if he could. They spent the next half hour or so comparing places they’d rather be. It was fun and distracted Carsten from the fact that Troy never showed up.

Reviews by the Wicked Reads Review Team

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
We first meet Carsten in the past. He is clearly in terrible circumstances which are alluded to just enough to convey the horror of his situation. By the end of our first meeting with him, however, there is just the tiniest glimmer of hope.

In the present, Beto, an FBI agent working undercover in the Skagit PD, is working to bring down illegal activities in the town. The men meet each other in a bar and then again as part of Beto’s investigation, where Carsten is a potential witness and his past is relevant to Beto’s case.

The efforts by Beto and the FBI to bring down the child sex ring that has been operating in Skagit lends a heaviness to this story and the constant deluge of rain adds to the atmosphere. On the other hand, the growing romance between Beto and Carsten balanced it out, giving me hope for a happy future for the men and that the good guys would win in the end.

I loved When It Rains. The drama, action, and love story combine well together and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing two men with less than perfect pasts find their happily ever after together. This is the eighth and final instalment in the Accidental Roots series and I’m going to miss Skagit but when I do, I know I’ll have eight wonderful stories to re-read.

The NorthStar by Elle Keaton

The holiday season can’t be over soon enough for John Hall. His ex-boyfriend emptied the bank accounts and ran off with his personal trainer months earlier leaving John unable to pay his creditors. Now he’s forced to close the independent movie theater he runs, a bad end to a bad year. Gay, single and closer to fifty than forty, John doesn’t see a lot of hope in his future. In the dark of night he wonders if staying afloat is worth the effort.

Chance Allsop made a promise to his dying mother he hopes he doesn’t regret. Ten months after her death he’s finally in Skagit Washington, visiting the old movie theater where his parents met and fell in love decades ago. The whole thing seems like a lark until he lays eyes on the handsome owner. With his mother’s spirit at his back Chance fully intends to win John Hall’s heart.

John was back on his knees—a position he historically enjoyed, but not in this scenario, checking under Dumpsters in foul weather. An unfamiliar voice startled him from his brooding. The sound came from the other side of the container, near the alley door John had left propped open. Focused as he was on searching for the kitten John hadn’t heard any approaching footsteps.

Dammit, he’d hoped the kitten would come inside on its own a human person was more than he wanted to deal with. Without the marquee turned on it seemed pretty obvious, to John at least, that the theater was closed, and why would anyone but him be back here in the alley? A chill ran down his spine. Was he about to get jumped? A bit hysterically, he wondered if his boxers were clean like his mother had always warned him they should be, just in case. But what hoodlum would call out a hello first? He was such an idiot.

After unsuccessfully searching the hallway and places the kitten could have gotten to inside, he’d come back outside to look more diligently, thinking he couldn’t see it because it was hiding under the other side of the container or it had found a box or something.

“Hello?” the voice repeated coming closer. “Are you all right then?”

A distinctly English accent, asking if he was okay—so he wasn’t about to be mugged and left for dead in a dark alley.

Carefully, John stood back from the trash container and turned to look over the top of it. It proved impossible for him not to stare at the handsome man waiting where he shouldn’t be. And, thankfully, he remembered taking a shower before leaving the house and putting on entirely clean clothing, including underwear, so he was good.

The stranger was backlit by security lights mounted on the opposite building, and John was standing a few feet away from him, but a trick of the light meant John could see his features clear as a sunny day. If he hadn’t been recovering from a terrible breakup and off men almost entirely, he might have thought an angel had decided John deserved a gift.

“Is there something you need?” he asked, attempting to shove aside his immediate attraction to the dark-haired man standing in his alley.

The man contemplated John for a moment before replying, “No, I think I’ve found it. I may have something of yours, however.”

Lord save him, the man had a smooth, deep voice and an English accent.

Veronica – ☆☆☆
A promise to his dying mother sees Chance travelling at Christmas from his home to London to Skagit to visit the NorthStar movie theatre where his parents met. When Chance arrives, he meets John, the theatre owner, who is in the process of shutting the place down so the bank can take it.

Chance and John’s romance is a story of insta-love which didn’t initially work for me. It felt a little too forced too quickly. But once they moved past their first night together, it started to feel more natural and I really started to enjoy the story. I particularly liked that Chance was so confident that John was the right man for him and the way he came in and pushed John in the direction he needed to go.

In the end, The NorthStar is a charming story, a little predicable, but I was left feeling good, which is just what I want from a Christmas story.

His Best Man by Elle Keaton

Rod Beton and Travis Walker have known each other almost all their lives; since the second grade when Rod was the new kid in town and Travis befriended him with Pokémon trading cards and a fruit snack. Apparently Rod’s easy. Since that day they've had each other's back's, bread and butter, biscuit and gravy... and so on.

Along the way, Rod fell in love with Travis. He's been hoping for some kind of signal from Travis that he returns Rod's feelings. When Travis announces his surprise engagement over Thanksgiving dinner Rod decides he's done waiting for the impossible. He packs his belongings and heads for Skagit and a new life. Even if Travis suddenly decided Rod was the man for him would Rod be able to put aside his insecurities?

Travis always knew he was destined to take over the family business. As the only boy he’s expected to take the helm of the Walker farming operation, and he’s good at it. An engagement to a local girl he’s pals with seems like the perfect solution, gets him mom off his back and ensures the family line -- eventually. When his best friend abruptly leaves town Travis’s eyes are finally opened to the difference between what is expected of him and what he could expect for himself.

His Best Man is a standalone in the Accidental Roots series, a friends-to-lovers mm romance with an HEA. Bisexual/gay.

A Note from the Author

Thank you for having me today!

Sexy or sweet? Can it be both?

His Best Man is definitely one of the sweeter romances in the Accidental Roots series. For crying out loud there is barely the whiff of a mystery! This is the first *almost* pure romance in the series – obviously there is a little teaser for the future but there is no mystery solved in the writing of this book. I feel like this is some kind of warning label 😊 .

The writing process is different for every writer and for every book (in my humble opinion). In general I am a pantser starting with only a vague outline and two characters who flesh out as they go. When I started His Best Man I knew what the beginning had to be but… the end was wrapped in mystery. Hah, I see where the mystery was now, it was meant for the author not the reader.

Anyway, back to His Best Man. For both of these guys the second scariest thing was *the first kiss*. What if they both had been fantasizing about something for ages and it turned out to be… meh? Ugh, as a writer I absolutely worried about this. To the point where I had a hard (haha) time actually writing the sex scenes. I don’t normally have trouble writing those scenes, and I write all kinds but these two… sheesh.

Obviously, I got it done and yes, His Best Man is both sexy and sweet. As are Travis and Rod. But the end still eluded me. Often the last chapter is written first or at least early on so I know where the story is heading but even that took a little while to form. Once it finally did things got a little easier, thankfully.

As an author I’m extremely proud of His Best Man, it’s something I’d never tried before. The writing was difficult and a lot more internalized characterization than in earlier novels – but it’s done and now Travis and Rod are released into the big bad world for everyone to meet. I hope you enjoy meeting them!

Cheers,
Elle

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
I’ve been looking forward to Rod and Travis’ story since the first time they popped up in this series, and it was worth the wait. Rod has been trying to work up the courage to tell his best friend, Travis, that he is in love with him. But when Travis suddenly announces his engagement to the girl next door, Rod pulls away from Travis and tries to get over him.

At first I loved how clueless Travis was. Everyone seems to be aware that Rod is in love with Travis except Travis. Travis is a really intelligent guy, but when it comes to people he is clueless, and it did start to bug me a little because I was getting impatient waiting for Travis to man up, clue in, and go after what he wants.

On the other side of this friendship, Rod is a good guy. Firefighter during the summer and now driving a school bus, he is great with kids and a really good guy. I was torn between cheering for him to move on from Travis and find someone new and wanting him to run into Travis’ arms and confess his feelings. But going in, I knew that there was only one ending to this story, it was just a matter of how we got there.

His Best Man is a really lovely story and I enjoyed all the journey of seeing Rod and Travis work themselves out as a couple, but also as men by pursuing a future that they want, making a life for themselves, and fixing straining family relationships. I think the ending of the story is really sweet and I was left wanting to spend more time with this couple. Hopefully we will see them again.

Unforgivable by Elle Keaton

No one ever claimed it would be easy.

Running away from his messy divorce did not bring Ira Fragale the peace he sought. If he's going to get his life together, he needs to pull up his big-boy pants and take care of business. He's been hiding out in Skagit, licking his wounds, for two years now. Keeping his head down, except for the trail of twinks he's left behind. Something's gotta give.

Bartending at the Loft is easy, and Cameron McCulloch likes the friendships he's developed since his family rejected him, but he wants more. To get that, Cam needs to knock Ira off the pedestal he's placed him on. Ira's older, but that doesn't mean he has any clearer handle on life and the universe than Cam. Cam needs to focus on his own needs and forget about Ira, but he can't.

Ira didn't choose Skagit at random; decades-old events set him on the path he is on today. The mystery of his father's murder may never be solved, but Ira would like to lay his spirit to rest.

None of this explains why Cameron is suddenly the target of a series of hate crimes. The small town of Skagit has its share of trouble, but someone has it in for the LGBTQ community, and Cameron is directly in their crosshairs.

This publication is intended for adults aged eighteen and over, due to sexual content, language, and other adult matters. HEA and m/m romance.

Veronica – ☆☆☆
Ira moves to Skagit after his marriage of 20 years ends when his wife finds out he is gay. He stops all contact with his wife and son and spends the next two years nailing every young guy in town, including bartender Cameron. But Ira uses their 20 odd year age difference as an excuse to brush Cameron off.

At first, I judged Ira pretty harshly. I was not fond of him at all. Partially from the fact that he cuts his son completely out of his life and partially because after his weekend with Cameron he keeps going into the bar Cameron works at to pick up guys. Cameron has had a difficult life and I wanted good things for him and I wasn’t sure about Ira.

Turns out I was too harsh on Ira. When his wife and son return to his life and we get more of a picture of Ira’s life before Skagit, my view of him started to soften. And as Ira and Cameron start seeing each other again, I realised the guys are a really good fit and their age difference means nothing, and I’d changed my turn about Ira.

The story is more than romance and relationship dramas, issues from their past put Cameron and Ira in danger and this danger helps bring them closer together.

For me, Unforgivable was an up and down ride which I really enjoyed. I think the troubled road that Ira and Cameron take made the ending to the story that much sweeter. Three solid stars.
