Wolf Bride by Elizabeth Moss

Hilary Mantel meets Sylvia Day: the first installment in a deliciously erotic trilogy, set against the sumptuous backdrop of the scandal-ridden Tudor Court.

Bound to him against her will...

Lord Wolf, hardened soldier and expert lover, has come to King Henry VIII's court to claim his new bride: a girl who has intrigued him since he first saw her riding across the Yorkshire moors.

Eloise Tyrell, now lady-in-waiting to Queen Anne Boleyn, has other ideas. She has no desire to submit to a man she barely knows and who-though she is loath to admit it-frightens her more than a little.

Their first kiss awakens in both a fierce desire that bares them to the soul. But as the court erupts into scandal around the ill-fated Queen, Eloise sees firsthand what happens when powerful men tire of their wives...

Elizabeth Moss is a new-to-me author, and I'm ashamed to admit the copy of Wolf Bride sat on my Kindle since the release. With the third in the series offered for review, I decided to dive in, and I am so glad I did.

I was hooked from page one of Wolf Bride, never reading a historical romance set at court, especially not during the reign of the wife-hoarding Henry the Eighth. The story was fresh, fast paced, intriguing, and a page-turner.

Eloise is a strong yet naive character, but not a damsel in distress, no matter how those around her treated her. The lines didn't get blurred in this novel as they do in most historical romances. Eloise's civil freedoms were in the hands of her father, then her husband, but always the King's. The loss of control on your own destiny was difficult to swallow, but I appreciated the truth of it while reading it.

For the most part, the story had me clicking page after page, but a few instances between Wolf & Eloise had me a bit frustrated. Wolf was so blind to how his words affected Eloise, and not in the 'she's and irrational female, making more out of it' sort of way. Basically, I felt Wolf a hypocrite, never explaining the 'plot' to his wife, yet acting without asking questions when it came to the woman who was more than dignified and understanding in his position.

Wolf Bride was one of the first books out of several, I've read of late that had me eager to get to the finish yet not wishing it to end, as I was taken on an intriguing emotional journey along with the narrators.

This isn't fade to black romance – be prepared for many scorching scenes of between the sheets action, not all of them happening within a marital bed.

Recommended to fans of steamy Historical Romance.

“Life taught me an eternal love will demand the worst sacrifices. A transcendent love will split your soul, cleaving you into pieces. A love this strong doesn’t grant you sweetness—it grants you pain. And in that pain is the greatest pleasure of all.”

Q made me the happiest esclave in the world. He gave me his heart, his empire, his ruthless unforgiving love. And life finally left us in peace.

A man like my maître has special needs though, growing stronger as our lives intertwine. The only way to survive his monster is to agree to all his desires.

Including his latest wish.

“Don’t struggle. You know I’ll keep you safe.” Q’s murmur danced down my back.

My panic receded as trust billowed fast and true.

Q was born into darkness, but he’d never baptized me in his blackest desires. And because of that, I could implicitly say he spoke the truth. No matter what he did to me, he would never truly harm me.

Q paused, his tattooed chest soaking. His feathered sparrows fluffing off droplets almost alive on his skin. “I told you once never to fall for me. That I didn’t want the curse of breaking your heart while I broke so many other pieces of you.” His hands landed on my breasts, cupping them reverently. “Yet you fought me, just like you said you would. You fell for me, just like you promised me you would. And now, you’re willing to give me what I need even after I tricked you and lied.”

I swayed as I fell even deeper for this complex husband of mine. Q was all my fantasies in one glorious lifetime. The fact he finally wanted to share me with his child spoke volumes about his capacity to love.

“I’m so glad you ignored me, esclave.” His fingertips branded my nipples with pain. “So fucking happy you married me.” Pushing me backward, he smiled harshly as my spine met the pool wall. His chest strained as he sucked in a heavy breath. “You’re so fucking beautiful.”

My heart hammered in my ears as he kissed me.

His tongue laced with mine, and I sank into the sweet embrace, knowing it would be the last I received tonight. The air crackled with an impending storm. Q’s control frayed every second, his eyes drenching in determination and the salacious need to hurt.

Breaking the kiss, he opened his hand, revealing the other item he’d retrieved.

A tiny pair of silver scissors.

You will, of course, need to read the previous books in order to enjoy this book. This book was everything you could hope for and then some. Tess and Q are an amazing couple, they love so fiercely and it comes through every page you read. Tess knows Q is holding a secret, her mind goes in a million directions on what it could be. The way they are still both afraid of losing each other and their desperate need to claim and mark each other is borderline obsessive, but that is how they work. This couple is so all consuming, just like the books are. I love this series, it will go down as one of my all-time favorites.

Characters: Well written
Sex: Oh yeah!
Religious: No
Would I recommend to others: Yes
More than one book in the series: Yes
Genre: Dark Romance
Would I read more by this author: Yes

I am among the minority with my rating of this book, and I will apologize in advance to the die-hard fans, but I didn't love this.

I must admit that Tess & Q are one of my favorite "dark" couples, when I found out that their story was going to be continued, I was absolutely ecstatic!

The story seemed to drag along, there was way too much insecurity on both characters’ parts. This immediately bothered me, and it went on for the majority of the book. Q always questions his dark instincts, this is normal for him, but I feel his brooding was just too much (and seemed out of character). Then Tess's continual questioning of their relationship drove me insane.

This was a "novella" that just felt like it drug along way too long.

Once I was able to get past what seemed like two different characters constantly fretting, the story did pick up.

I want to believe that the reason I didn't LOVE this story was due to my own head-space and stuff going on, I will try to read this again in a few months and see if I still feel as strongly as the first read.

This series of books give us big issues to consider, and guides us along fascinating paths to find love. I have needed a tissue (or two) for all in the series, and smiled my widest at the joy and fun that these characters have when they are together. For feel good, sexy romance this series is the place to be.

With a very dramatic start, and then a relaxing into calmer times, we are, to an extent, lulled into a gentle, feel good romance – but there are many layers building to create some really clever plot lines and lessons to be learned. Little touches like Janie having a momentary pause when thinking about how she behaves with her parents, or little touches like the butterflies, all add together to make this another special book in the series. Loved the ending – and the fact that it opened more opportunities for future books!

The Purest Hook by Scarlett Cole

Can a love built on secrets survive?

Rugged, hot, and rock hard, Dred Zander is exactly the type of man that normally sends Pixie running. Not dreaming about running her hands down his washboard abs...and lower. The lead singer and guitarist for the band Preload embodies trouble behind his quick smile and guarded eyes, and Pixie left trouble behind her years ago along with the name Sarah Jane Travers and the pathetic trailer her mom called home. With her abusive past in her past, she has a new life, a new family at Second Circle, and a dream of opening her own business. She needs capital and time. What she doesn't need is a tempting long-haired rocker or the paparazzi that follow him around.

But Dred has other ideas. Pixie's sweet hazel eyes, purple hair and kaleidoscopic tattoo of exotic flowers that swirl up her arm haunt his dreams, and he knows she wants him too. He just has to convince her. But as a juicy exposé threatens to expose their pasts, and a blackmailer terrorizes their present, Pixie and Dred have to decide what really matters and fight like hell to keep it.

This is book number three in the series and I had not read the first two, but it held its own as a standalone.

Dred and the boys from Preload head into Second Circle tattoo shop for some more ink. Dred has been asking Pixie, the office manager at Second Circle, out on a date forever and she's always turning him down. Pixie feeling finally, maybe, able to live her life without her past coming to haunt her, finally says yes to Dred while backstage at the Preload show. Somehow a picture of the two smooching ends up in the rag mags and brings an old nemesis of Pixie's out of the woodwork. All the guys in Preload have a tainted past, having all grown up together in a group home, they have their share of baggage. Pixie has hers too, and people are looking to exploit them all to the fullest and highest monetary gain. There's great chemistry between Pix & Dred, he's rough & sexy but knows Pixie has had an abusive past and knows she has triggers. There was a nice mix of sweet but raw emotions on both parts. The boys in Preload are quite interesting side characters too and I'm certainly wanting to know where their story might take us. I'm heading back now to read books one and two since they are hinted at in book three, but now I need Cujo & Trent's stories. Highly entertaining.

This is one of those reads that will stick with you after you’ve finished it. I loved it! It’s the first in the series I’ve read and can be read as a standalone.

Pixie has had a terrible upbringing, and when she was finally able to get away, she was lucky enough to find Trent and Cujo, the owners of Second Circle Tattoo shop, who helped her get clean and turn her life around. For years, Pixie has lived a quiet life as the receptionist at the tattoo shop, and though she feels the attraction, she’s avoided the advances by super sexy rock-star Dred. Dred knows he doesn’t deserve someone as sweet and innocent as Pixie, but he finds himself wishing for more with her. It takes him getting extremely sick and having Pixie nurse him back to help to talk her into a date, but once this happens the sparks really fly and their relationship grows quickly. Until both Dred and Pixie’s past comes back to haunt them in the form of a baby for one and an evil step-father for the other.

I loved that this was a long-distance relationship book, I don’t think I’ve ever read one quite like it. I love that the author is able to write Pixie and Dred’s connection so well that I found myself cheering them on from page one. This is a great read, it has a strong plotline and characters, I can’t wait to read more from this series!

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a very enjoyable read, which adds to the previous two books, and gives Pixie her chance to tell her story and find her happily ever after. That it turns out to be with Dred, the playboy rocker who acts as a judge on Inked, is not entirely a surprise. However, the journey that they take to get there is definitely not an easy one. Really, only faith in Ms. Cole to ensure that things will turn out okay makes that seem likely at times!

Pixie has not shared with anyone around her just how bad her past was, and that would probably still be the case if it weren't for the blackmail. I did feel that she was unwisely bold at being on her own at times, and maybe talking to the people who had brought her back to life might be a good plan...but it would no doubt have changed the plot. It was sometimes necessary to take a deep breath as she embarked on another day without support. The growth in her as a character though worked well, and that it included redemption and potential for a bright future was a bonus. Dred was her perfect foil and he too gets the chance to make a difference to his own life, as well as to that of others – is it an easy route that he takes? Undoubtedly not, but fascinating for the reader nonetheless!

These two manage to be cute in the face of their pasts, and hot in the face of her history – the rules are a clever and effective way of dealing with the new relationship and how they feel about each other. And as we now know the band members better, hopefully they too will have their stories told and we will get to visit old friends again.

Hot, angsty, sweet and redemptive – this book packs a full punch.

A Decade of Visions by Cameron Ramses

Born to a single mother in Dust Bowl-era Nebraska, Roy Manger learns to deny his true self from an early age. The rural Midwest is no place for a boy who wears girls’ clothes for fun—let alone for one who suffers gruesome hallucinations. It is only when he leaves home that he can embrace his true identity, spending his days as Roy and his nights as Raina, working as an escort in a ritzy Chicago bordello. But after a run-in with the law, Roy is torn between extremes: to live as a man or as a woman; to ignore his grief or struggle to accept it; to suppress his visions or seek to understand them. With the support of Woodrow, a convict with a murky past, Roy will have to come to terms with the fact that, in life, all of the greatest joys must come from within—and the greatest dangers, too.

A Decade of Visions contains adult content suitable for mature readers only. There are also instances of graphic gore and period typical homophobia.

Erica – ☆☆☆☆
Cameron Ramses is a new-to-me author.

To be quite honest, I have absolutely no idea how to review A Decade of Visions, or how to rate it either. All I can say is it was unexpected, original, intriguing yet confusing, and in a niche genre unto itself. So while I don't want to steer anyone away from reading it, I fear those looking for a mainstream MM romance will be confused. While those who 'get it', which I was one of them, will find it a very unique read.

The book itself is broken up into sections, beginning early in Roy's life at age 12. Honesty rearing its ugly head again, the beginning was not a hook for me. I struggled something fierce, but the story itself kept me engaged. Most of the scenes setting up the book were odd – the whole book was odd, truly – but these were odder than odd. There was some head-hopping, so I had a hard time keeping up with whether or not it was Roy, his mother, the various members of the vet's family. It was just back and forth in a very odd fashion. So when 'book 2' came about, I was seriously doubting whether or not I would continue. But I stuck with it.

Truthfully, when I came to the page that said Book 2, I got on Goodreads to make sure this wasn't an anthology of short stories, because I was beyond confused. In this instance, Book 2 was a jump in time – in other instances, it was no different than going from one chapter to the next.

Years later, in Chicago, Roy was Raina at this point, told by a man who would get 'Roy' arrested, where he meets the main love interest. In jail of all places. So while the delivery was inventive, it was still slightly dry. But, as I said, the story itself kept me going. Full circle – the reader is then thrust back to where we began – Nebraska.

Without giving the plot away, because I'm not sure how to explain it if I tried, I'll give out some key information. A Decade of Visions begins in the dust bowl in Nebraska, where a little boy is too sensitive. I'm not sure if you can call him gay, or transgender, as Roy himself says he feels like neither a boy or girl – he's just Roy or Raina, he or she, depending on how he is dressed. I did enjoy Roy/Raina.

Roy sees shadows of his dead loved ones – schizophrenia is mentioned, but those of faith would see it as seeing spirits. This is a large part of the storyline. It's not paranormal in nature, I need to add.

In a nutshell, the premise is unique, unlike anything I've ever read, but the writing style was just as odd – many conversations flowed like an interrogation, with paragraphs of 'telling' dialogue broken up with, "Roy asked a question." But the reader is left to guess what the question was by how the dialogue speaker answers. Then, as to break up the dialogue again, "Roy thought as much." "Roy asked another question." This happened frequently, and I found it jarring.

As for the blurb, which makes it sound like it's a sexy, running from the law type of read...10% was in the bordello, with not much of anything dealing with the world's oldest profession. All between the sheets action is fade to black. The other 90% was as dark and depressive as Nebraska during the dust bowl.

I'm not saying the book won't stick with me, or that the characters weren't developed or intriguing. Just that A Decade of Visions doesn't read as the blurb made it sound, and I felt I better issue that as a warning. Because from the blurb, you'd expect a sexy, exciting read. For a reader like me, who enjoys books which don't follow the norm, I was entertained. For someone expecting what the blurb is offering, they may get a bit bent out of shape with their review/ratings.

Boy Banned by RJ Scott Blog Tour

When the only way to win is to hide who you are, how far are you prepared to go?

Reuben “Angel” Jacobs is one step away from giving it all up. Losing a place in the live finals of Sing UK almost kills him. He has no choice but to go home and work for the family business, even though it means giving up his dreams and proving his old bullies right.

Corey Dixon is a rocker at heart. Being on the spectrum means that making sense of other people’s ‘normal’ is hard in itself, let alone in the chaos of a high-powered competition. Singing is his safe space, the only way he can think through the noise in his head. Messing up his audition for the live shows means his journey is over, and it’s the worst day of his life.

The judges throw them a lifeline and create a boy band from the near-miss hopefuls. Angel, Corey, and three others are put together in a room and offered the chance to sing as a group. Agreeing to become part of the new band means Corey has to hide who he is and what Angel has come to mean to him.

Is winning worth the price Corey and Angel have to pay?

“Filming in five, four….”

Brianna was clearly the leader in this particular choice. “Hi, guys,” she said strongly, her tone belied by the fluttering of her hands around her face. She had assumed the “we have terrible news” expression. Both the male judges had relaxed back in their seats.

All five of the contestants said hello back; the other four were as worried and subdued as Corey sounded to his own ears.

“Okay,” she began, “boys, boys, boys… you all know that the auditions at boot camp weren’t so good. Mistakes, wrong song choices, emotions getting the better of you….” She trailed off and looked into the distance with a soft pout. She was acting out the whole disappointment thing and was a freaking expert at it.

Corey shifted from one foot to the other. His head was banded with the start of a headache, which he was convinced would deteriorate into a migraine if he didn’t get some meds soon. That would just be the perfect shitty end to the perfect shitty day.

“We’ve considered you a lot. You’re the hardest group of singers, and it took us a long time to come to a decision.”

Another dramatic pause, in which Corey imagined music would be inserted for added drama. He stopped breathing, waiting for her to finish what she was going to say. Maybe, somehow, they’d been given the chance to prove themselves again, and she would say they were through.

She shook her head slowly. “Sorry, boys. We’re not taking you through as solo singers to the live finals.”

And there it was. Corey’s dream gone. Finished.

He’d messed up worse than the worst fuck-up ever, and the disappointment was visceral, unforgiving, heartbreaking.

Double K let out a harsh sigh and then draped himself all over Angel, who didn’t push him away, simply held him gently.

At least Double K wasn’t crying.

Corey wanted to cry.

Not at the fact he’d come this close to getting to the live shows, but the fact it was all his own fault that he’d blown his audition. If only he’d stuck to Kasabian, or maybe another old Bon Jovi, he’d have made it through.

Corey didn’t cry, though. He let himself feel the pain of disappointment, then looked to the stage manager as to what they were going to do next. If the cameras caught him at that moment, they would see a man who’d been dealt a blow but was stubbornly determined not to give up.

“But—” Brianna was talking again, saying something about wildcards and judges’ choice and compromise. “We have our wildcard choice, and all five of you made the list as being just outside those we selected who made it automatically to the shows. You’re all good, but you just didn’t raise your game enough to make it through automatically.”

Corey tuned back in. Were they going to make the five of them repeat their performance? Was he still in with a chance? He was way better than Skinny, Puppy, and Double K. Only Angel was anywhere near his skills vocally. Angel, who was still supporting Double K, which made Corey’s skin itch with a prickle of resentment. He pushed it away.

Hope bloomed inside him at the thought he might have another chance. He wouldn’t mess up again. He could do this.

And then, as suddenly as hope began to grow, Brianna dashed it by using her serious tone, the one that had viewers falling for her all over again.

“We’d like you to consider grouping together, becoming one band, and going through to the live finals as our wildcard choice in the group category.”

Stunned silence.

Double K was quiet, and Puppy had even stopped swearing quietly under his breath.

“Go,” Brianna said. “Take some time. Talk it over.”

In a daze, his chest tight, Corey left the stage, the last of them to leave, following Double K back into the large room they’d just been sitting in. Cameras followed them in, and all of them stood looking at each other.

“Okay, guys, this is a big decision,” the showrunner said. “We’ll keep the cameras out of the room. Let me know when you’re done. You have an hour before we offer this to our next reserve.”

He turned to leave, but Corey needed to ask one thing.

“If we say no, does that mean one of us alone would become the wildcard?”

Hope sat in his chest, and he willed the man to say yes.

The producer checked his clipboard and shook his head. “No. It’s all or nothing, because we have a girl up on second reserve if you decide you want to call it a day.”

Silence.

The cameras left; the door shut.

Angel shook his head, Puppy cursed loudly, Skinny thumped the wall, and Double K burst into tears.

And all Corey could do was stand there and use every available ounce of energy to focus on what the hell had just happened.

Great.

Kris – ☆☆☆☆
The book starts at the Singer UK TV show with Corey & Angel both awaiting their fates. They've been watching each other from afar throughout the competition, but being competitors for the same title, Corey kept his distance. When things take a turn and the two are thrown together to form a boy band or go home, they start to let their dreams and attraction to each other bloom. Corey is an interesting character, he is out as far as being gay, although his persona is the bad boy rocker. He's not quite in your face about being gay, but he IS a bit closeted as far as being on the autistic spectrum. Angel is the "gay one" in this band with his guyliner, bleached blond hair, and skinny jeans. There can only be one "gay guy" in the band, at least that's what they're told by their mentor. Can Corey merge with these other people and be a cohesive unit? Can he keep his attraction to Angel quiet? Does he want to?

I felt the story was sweet. The group of boys are eclectic but supportive. I liked the take on the other contestant, Hannah, and her being Corey's beard for the show. The autism aspect of the book was interesting and I felt portrayed well. It made me feel what Corey might have felt with the scratchy materials and the overwhelming crowds would do to a young man with autism. Angel was a sweetheart and helped to ground Corey and his freak outs, which made me love Angel's character all the more. While I felt like the book was a bit formulaic, it was a quick read with enough diversity to keep me interested throughout.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
I was very interested to see how the singing contest part of the story played out (rather than the romance) and I felt that it is written with great wit, and probably very near to the truth! I liked that dimension, and the impact of being in the public eye.

Although the story is about Angel and Corey, the rest of their band mates prove to be good sorts and supportive in the extreme. When such a disparate group is brought together, one would not expect such depths of friendship and loyalty to develop, but they do. RJ Scott does an amazing job of uncovering bias, narrowmindedness, and other less pleasant traits too. As Corey and Angel get closer, and deal with all that is being thrown at them publicly, one can only be hoping they stay the course, whatever the outcome of the competition.

Another winning read from an author in form. Thank you!

My goal is to write stories with a heart of romance, a troubled road to reach happiness, and most importantly, that hint of a happily ever after.

I've has been writing since age six, when I was made to stay in at lunchtime for an infraction involving cookies and the mixing bowl. You can't tell a six year old not to lick the bowl!

I was told to write a story and two sides of paper about a trapped princess later, a lover of writing was born.

As an avid reader myself, I can be found reading anything from thrillers to sci-fi to horror. However, my first real true love will always be the world of romance. I love my cowboys, bodyguards, firemen and billionaires (to name a few) and love to write dramatic and romantic stories of love and passion between these men. (Yum)

With over 90 titles to my name and counting, I am the author of the award winning book, The Christmas Throwaway, which was All Romance Ebooks best selling title of 2010.

I'm also known for the Texas series charting the lives of Riley and Jack, and the Sanctuary series following the work of the Sanctuary Foundation and the people it protects.

I'm always so thrilled to hear from readers, bloggers and other writers.
