This is the story of the unlikely romance that develops between a young tattoo artist and a much older veterinarian in a small town. It is also a story about grief, loss, and fresh starts.

Genderqueer Kaos is a tattoo artist and an ex-con on the run from his abusive ex. Padraig is a small town vet who has become increasingly isolated since losing his husband of more than twenty years. Neither Kaos or Padraig expects the flash of attraction between them and there’s a whole lot of baggage (and a twenty-year age gap) to overcome before the attraction could ever become something more.

This isn’t a light or easy read. Padraig’s grief is overwhelming, and his emotions become even more complicated when he starts to reflect more honestly on his marriage. Kaos is still exploring his gender identity and he’s internalised some of the negative beliefs of his abusive ex. Neither Padraig nor Kaos is great with communication and there are times it’s left to their friends to help them understand each other’s perspectives. This also isn’t a sexy read. The relationship that develops between Kaos and Padraig is painfully slow and focuses much more on emotional intimacy than sexual intimacy.

The characters around Kaos and Padraig keep the story from becoming too dark. I’ve not read the previous book in the series but Makai and Emil from the first book provide huge support for Kaos. Similarly, Padraig’s best friend Francis (probably book three) adds humour and emotional support for Padraig. I love Padraig and Kaos’ dog (I’ve been googling Pitskys since I finished the story). I really enjoyed Acker as a town and I’m looking forward to seeing more of some of the characters.

Ugh... I so wanted to like this book. The blurb was amazing, the book, not so much. I was expecting angst and didn't really get it. I couldn't connect with either of the main characters. I knew this wouldn't be an instant love story but for the love of Pete, it moved snail slow. I would have liked more angst and connection with the characters. Not sure if I'll read more books in the series. Wasn't my cup of tea but I'm sure others will enjoy it.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This poly romance is both sweet and sexy. It is the story of a young programmer who falls hard for his brother’s professor – and then equally as hard for the professor’s older husband.

I really loved all three men in this book. Devin and Seth are easy to love. Both cerebral and somewhat introverted, the chemistry between them is instant and the relationship that builds makes sense.

Leaf caught me by surprise and initially the relationship between him and Devin felt awkward and forced. In their first conversation, Leaf comes across as a creepy old man and I didn’t understand why Devin agreed so readily to explore a relationship with him. But Leaf won me over almost as fast as he won over Devin. I loved the overlapping interests of all three men and I enjoyed the way Devin makes Leaf and Seth stronger together. I love a good dog in a romance and this one has three brilliant dogs – and a stray kitten.

While this is definitely a poly romance rather than erotica ménage, there are some wonderfully electric sexual scenes that are all the more beautiful because of the emotional connections between the men.


Angie – ☆☆☆☆☆
My review isn't going to do this book justice because I'm not great at expressing how I feel in words, but holy flipping hell this book was good. M/M/M books are one of those books that can go really good or really bad. This one was really good. Just like the title, the lives of Dev, Seth, and Leaf are so smooth and natural, just like breathing. There is no jealousy, no awkwardness, and no unease at all. All three just fit so well together. Each man brings something different to the table and Dev completes Seth and Leaf like no other. Add in some amazing dogs and a little kitty and this book will melt your heart. I found myself putting the book down several times because I didn't want it to end. Amazing men and a beautiful love story.


Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is a very enjoyable, romantic, and thoughtful story. It involves three people with very different lives, and yet somehow, they all find their role in completing each other. There is always a bit of a pause when a newbie joins an established couple, but here the acceptance from the start makes that easier to envisage. Acceptance from others is less immediate, but they are confident in what is right for them.

Possibly in part due to the dogs and the kitten, this has far more of a romantic, family feel than many trio stories may have, but never fear, you will get to read about the intensity of the chemistry between them as well. As the title says, their relationship is like breathing, natural, meant, and life affirming. Delicious, thank you!

One Step Forward by Tia Fielding

Most of the pain is on the inside, however, and Sam knows those injuries are the slowest to mend. Sam’s unique methods help Calla and, surprisingly, Josh, but he’s still lost without riding. Their feelings for each other come hard and fast, and Josh starts his first steps of recovery, but Sam needs to return to Texas eventually. Even if Josh is able to move past the accident, they’ll still have a long and difficult journey to make before they can be together.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This is a slow, tender story of growth and healing. When grieving horse whisperer Sam arrives to care for Joshua’s scarred horse, Calla, he soon realises that Calla will never fully recover until Joshua does.

Sam and Joshua both very broken at the start, but Sam’s gentle ways and Joshua’s warm, loving family stop this from ever becoming too angsty or depressing. This is as much a horse story, a family drama, and a story of personal recovery, as it is a romance. The romance between Sam and Joshua develops painfully slowly.

I found myself really enjoying the relationship building in this story, but readers wanting a sexy cowboy romance might need to look elsewhere for sex and excitement. While the chemistry between Sam and Joshua is fantastic, there is a long wait for any physical contact between the two leading men and the focus remains on the lives being rebuilt rather than the romance or sex.

This is a warm, fuzzy, feel-good story. It is a gentler, sweeter style and storyline than I usually read, but I really enjoyed the cast of well-developed characters and the idyllic Kentucky ranch. I loved the patience Sam applies as he works carefully with both Calla and Joshua and I loved the personalities afforded to each of the animals.


Jacki – ☆☆☆☆
I really enjoyed this book! It was so heart-felt and sentimental. It really left a warm, lovey feeling in my heart.

After Josh and his horse are in a riding accident, his life and all he has ever known falls apart. He can't find the will to cope and is barely surviving. His horse, Calla, isn't much better and Josh's parents are willing to do anything to help them. They enlist the help of horse whisperer Sam, and they may finally have the right man for the job.

Sam was retired from whispering, but something about this case stuck with him and wouldn't let him say no. He has enough of his own problems to deal with, but he just can't let this one go, so he finds himself on a ranch in Kentucky with his reputation and heart on the line with two very unique beings in dire need of his help. He doesn't even know if he can do it, but he has to try.

Sam and Josh's relationship is full of pain and healing on both ends. I really like that Calla, Sam's family, and Josh's family are tied in so well. I could really feel the love. I also liked how bold and outright Sam treated Josh. He didn't beat around the bush or walk on eggshells.

The one negative I have with the book is the time gaps toward the end. I understand what the author was doing, but to me it felt like holes full of filler that didn't quite match up to the quality of the rest of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It left me content and I had no problem finishing it quickly. I would recommend it to M/M and romance fans alike.

Addicted to reading and writing, lover of nature and all the other little things that make life worth living. As thirty-something queer Scandinavian, I've had it easier than many in my global GLBTQ family. I, much like my characters, am still looking for that one forever kind of love, but I hold on to hope that eventually I don't just have to write about feeling that kind of thing. I learned to read and write early, before I went to school. I was so utterly bored when the other kid in my class (yes, the school was a village one and very, very small...) didn't know how to. Luckily I had a teacher who let me read when the boy learned how to do the things I already could. I wrote stories early, too. Mostly about horses, but later also about romance or what I thought made up "romance." I distinctly remember never, ever finishing stories. I can't remember typing The End before I started to write fan fiction around 2009. These days I struggle with depression and the beast my ADD can be, and try to write when the muses are the loudest. Eventually, I hope, I can write for a living in the way most of us authors want to.
